The Demise Of The Twinkie: Hostess Files Motion To Liquidate

And that’s that: Hostess Brands, maker of Twinkies, Wonder Bread and more, announced this morning it has filed a motion with bankruptcy court to start liquidating the company immediately. A huge number of jobs are soon to be lost.
“Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce,” said CEO Gregory F. Rayburn in the statement, “and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”
In a letter posted on a new site set up to communicate with employees and suppliers through the liquidation process, Mr. Rayburn pinned the blame on its striking union:
Despite everyone’s considerable efforts to move Hostess out of its restructuring, when we began implementing the Company’s last, best and final offer, the Bakers Union chose to stage a crippling strike. This affected Hostess’ ability to continue to make products and service its customers’ needs and pushed Hostess into a Wind Down scenario. As a result, we are forced to proceed with an orderly wind down and sale of our operations and assets. We deeply regret taking this action. But we simply cannot continue to operate without the ability to produce or deliver our products.
There’s no way to soften the fact that this will hurt every Hostess Brands employee. All Hostess Brands employees will eventually lose their jobs – some sooner than others. Unfortunately, because we are in bankruptcy, there are severe limits on the assistance the Company can offer you at this time.

Hostess Brands—the maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread—announced that it is asking a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations and sell its brands, James O'Toole of CNN Money reports.
The company, which blamed the liquidation on a strike by bakers protesting a new contract, will shut down 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide as 18,500 workers lose their jobs.
Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, then reached a deal with one of its major unions in September that included a new contract with reduced wages and benefits. But the 5,000 member bakers' union rejected the deal, leading to the protested contract that cut salaries in addition to reducing the company's pension obligations and contribution to the employees' health care plan.
"Our members are on strike because they have had enough," bakers' union president Frank Hurt said in a statement on Tuesday. "They are not willing to take draconian wage and benefit cuts on top of the significant concessions they made in 2004 and give up their pension so that the Wall Street vulture capitalists in control of this company can walk away with millions of dollars."
The company gave bakers a 5 p.m. Thursday deadline to return to work or face a shutdown of the company.
Hostess—now controlled by a group of investment firms including hedge funds Silver Point Capital and Monarch Alternative Capital—will sell its assets to the highest bidder, meaning that some of its more popular products could be picked up at auction and packaged by other companies.

Did a bancruptcy before this. The competition for shelf space is pushing them out. You guys have see this in your convieneince stores too. A competitor offering the same food for less price......yes labor wages are one culprit but they admit they cant stay competitive.
Heres what will happen: They will do a BK and get out of all the pension/health benefits promised. Then as a leaner package.....low overhead..... a bain capital or other company will pick them up and restructure with a license to use the name "Hostess"
Then they will hire non union workers at 9.00 and hour and no benefits. There you go....the twinkies will be back in a year with lower prices and a freshly screwed 18,000 people looking for low wage job.
This is what will happen. The middle class will go to 3rd world wages and the rich will get richer. Race to the bottom!

Where did I say I'm cool with the union crap? I'm not. I have said repeatedly I support slashing every union in america by HALF and waiting ten years, then re-evaluating. They are needed in some extent - BUT at the same time, employers will abuse without them.

But Botton line, if the companys revenue was up they wouldn't be in this situation.
Chances are the execs refused to change because of arrogance.
And then repub spin doctors use a story like this to whip up support for repub ideals and the less intelligent eat it up like twinkies.

They have asked for concession repeatedly lowering the wages a baker makes from $48,000 a year to $25,000. How can anyone live on that?

Censoring people's opinions about the President or his family would make it a "sanitized" board. I am not interested in that either. Anyone is free to voice their hatred for the president. What they are no longer free to do on this board is personally attack, insult, name call, badger, bait etc. another poster. (that's what is meant by personal attacks)
If a person a wrong about something, show them why with a good argument. And a good argument is free of ad-hom. A sign of a bad argument has ad-hom in it.

The posters on the board really didn't take care of it by way of further abusive ad-hom. It just turned the place into a elementary school play ground (which i also participated in) So many points and counter points digressed into insult wars.
I have always tried to be fair in modding. What's easy about this (and hard at the same time), is that it's a rule that applies to everyone.

The mods let 333 run wild for the last 4 years with him personally attacking lots of people for nothing more than not agreeing with his insane point of view. Mods have also let him attack the first family calling them ghetto scum and far worse and now he's allowed to run amok with 5 different gimmicks.

I think the real problem with Hostess is that they just weren't releveant any more...I grew up eating all of their junk as did my friends...when I was a kid, you couldn't walk into a corner store without seeing their products...
I remember when their devil dogs were actually as big as a real hotdog.....they used to be 10 cents...I would buy six of them everyday and eat them at lunch time when I was in 9th grade.....they were awesome
loved the apple pies as well and the twinkies I was realy hooked on for awhile....they were addictive..
however today the kids no longer eat them...they don't advertise the brand on TV....I think the management was basically stagnant in terms of marketing to a new generation....

Hostess management, which is currently blaming unions for killing the Twinkie, awarded company execs absurdly large raises around the same time as filing for bankruptcy in January 2012 - including a 300% pay raise for then-CEO Brian Driscoll.
According to the the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union:
"As the company was preparing to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, the then CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises. One such executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256."
This is such a striking piece of evidence undermining the myth that organized labor killed Hostess.
The unions killed Hostess…another right wing myth.

As a little boy in fourth or fifth grade I had a crush on a little girl. We used to eat lunch together every day and every single day I would try to trade something out of my lunch for the Twinkie that her mother packed in her lunch. I was disappointed every time as she never traded me for one of those golden cream filled cakes. (Why she did not want my bologna and ketchup with crushed Fritos sandwich is beyond me.) To this day I still kid her about not giving up those Twinkies.
When I met my first drill sergeant in the Army one of the very first things he screamed at me was that I "wasn’t (expletive deleted) at home sittin' on the (expletive deleted) couch eatin' (expletive deleted) Twinkies and drinkin' (expletive deleted) Mountain Dew." How I wanted the comfort of a (expletive deleted) Twinkie right at that moment.
Today it has been announced that Hostess along with Wonder Bread is going out of business. Of course the right-wingers are foaming at the mouth claiming that it is the unions' fault what with their ridiculous demands of fair compensation for work given to the company. Of course none of those on the right will acknowledge the CEO at Hostess got a 300 percent raise from $750,000 to $2,250,000. Now, I find $750,000 to be an outrageous amount of money for anyone to make ... $2.2 million is beyond outrageous and a 300 percent raise is well into the territory of obscene greed.
The average employee salary for Hostess employees is approximately $43,000 a year. The CEO makes $2.2 million, and management is asking for further wage and benefits concession, seriously? Hostess will live on—the brands of Hostess, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Ho-Hos, Wonder Bread, etc., are too valuable to be left to die. The brands and bakeries will be sold and some other vulture capital firm will provide financing and new non-union employees will be hired. My guess is that the new non-union employees will make less in pay and benefits than the average union wage of today.
To place the blame on the backs of the very people who built Hostess is wrong. It was the union bakers, the union line workers, the union route drivers that made Hostess into what it was. Not some CEO sitting behind a desk pulling in more money in one year than I will earn in a lifetime. It is also certainly not some vulture capitalist piling debt onto the company while sucking the profit out like a five year old sucks the cream filling out of a Twinkie. The unions didn’t kill Hostess ... it was greed that killed Hostess.
Today, I will go to the grocery store and purchase my last box of union-made Twinkies (possibly the first one I have purchased in twenty years). I will share them with my son and tell him stories of Twinkie the kid, how a little girl would not share her Twinkies with me and what my drill sergeant thought of them.
