skullcrushers - elbow angle.
« on: June 14, 2008, 01:14:57 PM »
Whats the best way to perform them?

albows close together, wide spread or whatever angle is confortable for you?

You hear many guys in the gym saying "you don't do it right, close your elbows".  ::)

Keeping elbows close on overhead extensions and skulldcrushers was the way they always told you to do them in old magazines.............I flair them out a bit, much less stress on the joint, and you can handle a lot more weight.

two hand-one dumbell,

Ive never seen anyone do this;

I'm assuming that its with an ez bar on a flat bench. I think the most strict form is with elbows in, but like Wes I flair mine out a little bit b/c its easier on the joints. I do the same thing with OH db extensions. i might be losing a little bit with the flairing, but i make up for it with an extra set

You've never seen anyone do two-handed one dumbell extentions?

If you do them laying down on a bench the dumbell damn near crushes your skull. I prefer to do these sitting on a short backed chair.

And laying down with a cambered bar is really good as well, elbows flare out some, it's natural.

i like doing them with one dumbell and two hands in the short back chair as well.

if im using an ez curl bar i always do them on an incline bench

my elbow position....well its slightly flared i guess, just in the right position for my bone structure and bio mechincs...    i think everybody will be a little bit different as to what position works best

If you read the first line, I also call them extentions. Skull crushers are done lying done, extentions are done sitting up, my opinion. Although if you fuck up, sitting up can crush your skull as well. ;D

Both skull crushers and overhead DB extension, i do them with slightly flared out elbows. Just feels a bit more comfortable.
No doubt about it...

yea i agree but two things one i can handle more weight it seems doing an EZ curl bar laying down than an overhead DB extension also another move that i think trumps both of them  is double DB extension on a decline bench..

Skullcrushers - AKA Lying Triceps Extensions..........usually done with an E-Z Curl bar or a straight barbell.

Can also be done with two dumbells simultaneously,or one dumbell, usually to the opposite side of the head...............all are performed while lying on a flat bench, decline bench or even the floor.

Triceps Extensions - AKA French Press.............Usually done seated with an E-Z Curl bar,but can be done standing or on an incline bench.

Also performed with a single dumbell held with both hands usually seated also, or a single dumbell one arm at a time (one-arm dumbell extensions),alternating arms.

Both exercise can be done with a low cable also.

Gave me pain when I tried them.
Some masochistic folks seem to despise their elbow-joints.
