Two teachers at Public School No. 59, 250 E. 57th St., are facing disciplinary action after students were sent home with questions asking them to subtract dead slaves and multiply the number of times a day a slave is whipped.

Quote
Two Manhattan teachers are in hot water over an offensive homework lesson that used killing and whipping slaves to teach subtraction and multiplication.
Public School 59 teacher Jane Youn, 32, sent the boneheaded questions home with her fourth-graders in January.
One question focused on a ship loaded with 3,799 slaves. “One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive?” the question read. Another word problem used the example of a slave who “got whipped five times a day,” then asked students to calculate the number of whippings he received in a month. Education officials said that fourth-graders at the midtown school wrote the questions themselves after Youn told them to blend lessons they learned in social studies class with their math assignments. Youn gave them to students as homework. A woman who answered the door at Youn’s upper East Side high-rise refused to comment. “I don’t want to participate,” she said. A second PS 59 teacher, Jacqueline Vitucci, made copies of the questions and planned to give them to her students. Parents at the well-off school were shocked by the flap. “I don’t think that’s reflective at all of what the school is about,” said one parent who asked not be named. Principal Adele Schroeter said she was “appalled” by the incident and ordered sensitivity training for the entire staff.

If they had been Muslims it would never have been complained about or reached the press.

Jane Youn - sounds Asian.

For current generation of blacks, most of them have no clue about the history of slaves, the life of slaves and the impact of slavery in this country.

To be quite honest, blacks who live in this country nowadays should be very grateful and satisfied that their ancestors were slaves brought to this land. Look at the continent of Africa, look at every black country, is there any one country that ruled by blacks that prospers and embraces democracy, freedom, peace and wealth? Quite oppositely, every country that ruled by blacks are poor, dirty, dangerous and uncivilized, and most of them are experiencing civil war.

It is just because of the history of slaves, blacks, in the US nowadays as the offspring of their slave ancestors, have the opportunity to live in the most civilized, richest and freest country.

Every black should be proud of slave history, should be grateful for their slave ancestors. Every black should appreciate and thank white people for bring their fathers and mothers to this country and other civilized continents.

Blacks should celebrate their history, especially the time of being slaves, "be black, be slave, be grateful."

Yeah, no kidding.  It almost makes me question as to whether the story is real or made up.  It's that ludicrous.

Asians can be extremely racist, so it doesn't really surprise me that much.

And then you wonder why this school even tries to protect this teacher?  Either this teacher is so stupid or just plain ignorant and dumb or just wants out. Either way, time for this teacher to go.   Really, send those questions home with 4th graders. WTF?

The other teacher - at least he was smarter and declined to pass them out. Duh.

But the kids wrote the questions themselves.  If the teacher refused the headline would be "Teacher Refuses To Discuss Slavery" or some such.

The little bastards saw a chance to put their teacher in hot water and they did it beautifully.

Most likely.
