Actually it looks like his replacement Dominek Hixon is a serious player. They don't even need him!

The Giants' dream season was thrown into turmoil Saturday when Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub and linebacker Antonio Pierce tried to hide the gun, police sources said.

Burress is expected to be arrested on felony weapons charges in the coming days, while Pierce's attorney was in frantic discussions with cops last night to stave off criminal charges, police sources said.

Burress' latest self-inflicted wound came after he was initially turned away from the LQ nightclub in midtown because he was packing heat, police sources said. Burress, 31, who was sporting flashy jewelry and carrying loads of cash, told club management he needed the gun to protect himself, sources said.

The mercurial Giant was waved inside the crowded Latin-themed club on Lexington Ave. about midnight. He downed several drinks, making already jittery security guards more nervous about his weapon.

As Burress was being led into a VIP area, with a drink in his hand, the gun slipped down his pants leg. He reached for the weapon, but fumbled it and it went off, sources said. The bullet tore through Burress' already injured right thigh, police said.

"[The bullet] went in and out. No bones," Chief Michael Collins, a police spokesman, said.

Pierce, 30, rushed to his bleeding teammate and applied pressure to the wound as Burress screamed in pain amid the hip-hop beats piping through the club, sources said. As he worked to slow the bleeding, Pierce berated Burress for bringing a loaded handgun into a club.

Panicking, Burress told his teammate not to call 911 for an ambulance, sources said.

Pierce helped the bloodied receiver out of the club before taking off with the gun and stashing it somewhere in New Jersey, sources said.

Burress was afraid to go to the hospital, but two hours after the shooting, at 2 a.m., his wife, Tiffany, and a friend escorted him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. He was treated and released at about 12:45 p.m., sources said.

But a hospital spokeswoman denied that Burress was ever there.

Cops only learned about the incident after Giants employees quietly reached out to the NYPD to report it, sources said.

When plainclothes officers from the NYPD and local cops arrived at Burress' mansion in Totowa, N.J., about 5 p.m., they were turned away by his wife - even after ringing the bell five times. "We've been through a lot today," a woman said from inside the home.

"Ma'am, we're talking to a box," one of the cops said, referring to the intercom system outside the house. After the chaotic night, Pierce headed to Washington Saturday to prepare for the Giants game against the Redskins today. His attorney told cops Pierce would cooperate if he wouldn't be charged, sources said.

A Giants rep left Washington Saturday to retrieve the gun in New Jersey and turn it over to investigators, police said.

Still, cops plan to get a warrant to search Pierce's car because they believe Burress had the gun in his vehicle.

Burress is expected to be charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a felony that carries a prison sentence of up to five years, sources said. "He went for his gun and fumbled it. And now it will cost him," a police source said.

Cops cannot arrest Burress until they obtain a warrant from the Manhattan district attorney's office, sources said.

The Giants confirmed the shooting. "This incident could become a matter for law enforcement officials," the Giants said. "Our primary concern is for Plaxico's health and well-being."

The state of Florida issued Burress a concealed weapon permit that expired in May. Even if it had been renewed, it wouldn't be recognized by authorities in New York or New Jersey.

Star running back Brandon Jacobs said Burress wasn't answering his phone. "I'm very concerned about him," Jacobs said. "I've been trying to call him, to see how he's doing."

Burress, who caught the Super Bowl-winning pass from Eli Manning in February, was already going to miss the Redskins game with a hamstring injury in the same leg where he was shot.

The team was in contact with NFL security as the investigation continued. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Daily News it was too soon to determine if the shooting was a violation of the league's personal conduct policy.

"That is premature," Aiello said. "We are working with the Giants to determine the facts."

Police began combing the club for evidence just before 5 p.m. Saturday. An employee turned over a spent .40 caliber shell casing, sources said.

Burress' high-profile agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return calls for comment.

Burress has become a season-long distraction, creating constant controversy with his disdain for punctuality, an on-field tirade at an official and problems at home.

Through the first 12 weeks of the season, the recidivist receiver has been fined, suspended and benched. Between lost salary and fines, Burress was out more than $200,000 since September.

The season's litany of troubles came after Burress earned a Super Bowl ring and financial security. His winning TD against the Patriots was followed seven months later by a new five-year, $35 million contract.

What an idiot.  Seriously, why do the ghetto types think they need to carry a weapon to protect themselves?  Why do celebs think the laws don't apply to them?

Too bad it didn't really injure him, so he learns his lesson, because he surely won't learn it from the law; he'll likely get off with little punishment.  Hopefully the NFL starts the Pacman progression of punishment on this clown.

Giants' Burress 'fully cooperating,' defense attorney says

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has retained New York defense attorney Ben Brafman to represent him after the ninth-year veteran accidentally shot himself in the thigh Friday night at a Manhattan night club.

Brafman told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio that Burress will be interviewed Monday by New York police and is "fully cooperating" with authorities.

When asked about the whereabouts of the gun involved in the incident, Brafman said "we're dealing with that today with the police."

Giants general manager Jerry Reese said Sunday that he had yet to speak to Burress.

"I reached out to him," Reese said. "I did not get a return phone call."

Burress, who was out Friday night with Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce, was treated overnight and released from a New York hospital on Saturday afternoon.

According to an NFL official, the bullet went through the skin and muscle tissue of Burress' right thigh and did not hit any major arteries, and that there were no broken bones, Paolantonio reported.

NFL handgun policy prohibits players carrying weapons on NFL premises and NFL-related functions. It also prohibits any player having a gun without a proper permit or registration.

If Burress or Pierce are found to have broken the law, those offenses would subject them to penalties under the league's personal conduct policy.

"I would hope that fans of the New York Giants will give Plaxico the benefit of the doubt and the presumption of innocence -- something we're all supposed to be given in this country," Brafman said in a statement.

Reese told The Associated Press that Pierce had been interviewed by NFL security about the incident. The New York Daily News reported that Pierce had tried to hide Burress' gun.

Pierce was still expected to start Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

Check out the latest on WR Plaxico Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday.

"I'm disappointed this happened and that any of our guys would put themselves in this kind of situation," Giants CEO John Mara said Sunday. "Our first concern is for Plaxico's health and well-being. We were very relieved to find out he is OK. But yeah, I'm disappointed."

Police and NFL security are investigating whether there was a third Giants player who was present or involved, at the very least for gathering more information on the incident, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The team is considering placing Burress on the non-football injury reserved list, which would make him ineligible for the remainder of the season, sources said. It also would allow the Giants to recover some money already paid to Burress.

Additionally, a source told Mortensen that Burress has as much as $4.5 million tied to play-time incentives and active-roster status.

Reminds of the Marbury stupidity. These are children who through talent have been permitted to postphone maturation and common sense for years.

Considering the outrageous fact that he didn't even attend the Giant's victory parade last winter, as well as all the other stuff before and after that, the Giants must've been smart enough to load that new contract with clauses. Hopefully much of his new money will be removed from pea-brain, teach him some needed reality.

NFL rules really don't matter, they're deferring to more serious potential criminal charges. NYC doesn't allow guns without permit, he didn't have one. Period

Exactly.  He even violated those because he didn't have a permit for the weapon.  If he gets probation and no jail time then I think other criminals, like him, should use it as the "Plaxico" defense.  Proof positive that money can't buy class and intelligence.

You're easily impressed. Their season was on the rocks until a few weeks ago, now they're on a streak against some weak teams. Nothing great shown yet, not at all.

I hate to agree (because I HATE the Cowboys) but outside of the Giants they are the most talented team in the NFC.  If they're healthy, they're going to be a threat.  I hope I'm wrong.

They are the team that has the ability to knock you off.  Whats the answer for Barber, Williams, Owens and Whitten?  One of them is going to do damage no matter what you do.

Manning,Jacobs,Ward,Bradshaw,Boss,Toomer,Hixon,and Smith ;)
the Giants offense averages the most points per game.the D just has to make enough stops.

but Dallas has enough on both sides of the ball to make it a helluva game.

The patriots averaged more points than any team in NFL history last year, and you see what happened to them.  The Giants are clearly the best team in the NFL, but Dallas is a team I would be worried about.  You catch them on the right night, and they could off you.

Yes you can pressure the qb....but Barber is a beast, and the short screen can be used to force you to respect the run.  If that happens either owens, whitten or Williams will be open.  The one thing that Dallas has that NE didn't have is a beast of a TE. Romo is smart enough to diagnose the blitz, and unload the ball fast.

Your real problem could be in picking your poisen.  Blitz Romo and risk short dump offs to the backs, or passes over the middle to the te's. or play coverage and take on TO, Whitten and Roy Williams.  You know TO is going to take two db's with him down the field, so what are you going to do about Williams at the second level, and Whitten in the seams?  Again, the pats didn't have a TE threat like Whitten, so I think that adds a wrinkle you didn't see last year.

Maybe it's nitpicking, but I'm concerned about the Giants constantly giving up good field position on special teams because of weak kick offs.

If a team like Dallas is constantly starting at their own 35-40, they will do damage.

The case drew the wrath of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has waged a long fight against illegal guns during his time in office. He called for a full prosecution of state law that requires mandatory prison for carrying a loaded handgun.

"I don't think anybody should be exempt from that, and I think it would be an outrage if we didn't prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, particularly people who live in the public domain, make their living because of their visibility -- they're the role models for our kids," Bloomberg said.

He also lashed out at the hospital, based on the allegation that officials may not have properly reported the shooting.

"It's just an outrage that the hospital didn't do what they were legally required to do. It's a misdemeanor, it's a chargeable offense, and I think the district attorney should certainly go after the management of this hospital. The lame excuse that they didn't know -- this is a world-class hospital," he said.

I know that area pretty well. The club's at 48th and Lex., the police precinct's just a few streets up at 51st and Lex and NFL HQ's down the block on Park.

As you'd expect, that club's your typical shit-hop joint, hence his need for the money, the jewelry and then the gun to protect it with instead of just getting bodyguards. Then of course the knuckleheads who run the club who let him in knowing he had a guy.

The Glock he was carrying doesn't have a safety. The only smart way to carry it is in a holster, which of course he didnt have. Easy to have it go while fumbling with it.

Every year the NFL lectures the players against carrying guns, so it's not as though he didn't know better. Supposedly half of the NFL carries, indicating the thug side of the demographics unfortunately.

This is not fact you are stating here. The police report says that Burress claimed that he told club employees that he had the gun. But I guarantee that he didn't tell club workers that.

To protect their business, there is no way in hell that club owners will admit or testify in court that they allowed Plaxico to pack heat inside the club. No way in hell.

No permit for the gun?? Then that's a WRAP! Minimum 3.5 years mandatory jail sentence for carrying a concealed gun. Bloomberg's power and political influence will overpower even the best NY defense attorneys.

Plaxico is going to jail.

It was reported that Plaxico CLAIMED he told the club workers he was carrying a gun(according to the police report). What evidence is there to support that the employees allowed him to carry a gun???

My point is that Plaxico is obviously full of shit. What legitimate licensed bar/club would allow you to carry a gun inside the premises once you have informed them of such?

It's a lie, plain and simple and there is no evidence to support that the club allowed him to do this. No employee at that club is on record as saying such.

Moot point. The idiot will be in jail by Summer 2009.
