Andre, you're spot on.
I try to put a "good" picture on the top of the page as this is the first image people will see when they look at the latest page.
It's not always that easy though, depends what picture I've recently found/located.

I'm not sure about sparking an interest. I think most people click on the thread, have quick a look, and then go onto the main discussion board.
