Your tongue in cheek sentiments represent the conventional wisdom in magazine publishing right up until the 1990s. Oprah Winfrey all but shattered that rule with the launch of her own magazine though in some quarters it is still taken as gospel.
The ascendancy of crossover stars like Oprah & Michael Jordan, added to the rise of hip hop culture (Lauryn Hill, Will Smith, etc.) have really chipped away at the conventional wisdom of blacks on magazine covers.
