Seriously though, the Confederates could have easily taken Washington D.C several times, but didn`t.  And then you had Lincoln`s generals running around not taking him seriously.  If it weren`t for Lincoln and a bit of luck, the North would have never had a chance.  Without Lincoln removing generals, Like McClellan, who ran against him for President, there would have been no hope.  Lincoln is arguably the only reason the North was able to succeed.

Probably has to do with how much easier it is to hide a handgun. It would have been hard to gain entry into a school with a rifle or a shotgun.
