Headline: No yolk: eating the whole egg as dangerous as smoking?

Just as you were ready to tuck into a nice three-egg omelet again, comforted by the reassuring news that eggs are not so bad for you, here comes a study warning that for those over 40, the number of egg yolks consumed per week accelerates the thickening of arteries almost as severely as does cigarette smoking.

Server, can you make that an egg-white omelet instead, please?

The study, published Tuesday in the journal Atherosclerosis, measured the carotid wall thickness -- a key indicator of heart disease risk -- of 1,231 patients referred to a vascular prevention clinic, and asked each to detail a wide range of their health habits, from smoking and exercise to their consumption of egg yolks. Just as smoking is often tallied as "pack-years" (the number of cigarette packs smoked per day for how many years), egg-yolk consumption was tallied as "egg yolk years" (the number of egg yolks consumed per week times the number of years they were eaten).

The study subjects were typically referred to the clinic after having suffered a clot-induced stroke or a transient ischemic attack -- a "mini-stroke" in which symptoms may disappear quickly but which often presage a more serious stroke to come.

Smoking tobacco and eating egg yolks increased carotid wall thickness in similar fashion -- which is to say, the rate of increase accelerated with each stair-step up in cigarette smoking or yolk consumption. By contrast, for those who did not smoke, or who rarely consumed egg yolks, carotid wall thickness increased after 40, but at a slow-steady rate.

For those whose consumption of whole eggs was in the highest 20%, the narrowing of the carotid artery was on average about two-thirds that of the study's heaviest smokers.

"We believe our study makes it imperative to reassess the role of egg yolks, and dietary cholesterol in general, as a risk factor for coronary heart disease," the study authors write.

In recent years, nutritionists have begun to agree with egg purveyors that chicken eggs -- cheap and packed with protein -- have gotten a bad rap as a dangerous source of cholesterol. Some studies have suggested that eggs may increase HDL, or "good cholesterol" that protects against heart disease, even as it contributes to the artery-clogging LDL cholesterol, making egg consumption something of a wash. And regular egg-eaters may form larger lipoprotein particles that help clear the blood of fat particles and are not as likely to settle in artery walls.

Still, the National Heart Blood and Lung Institute recommends that to limit their risk of developing heart disease, Americans limit their cholesterol intake to no more than 300 mg per day (an egg yolk has just over 200 mg), and eat no more than four whole eggs weekly, including those in baked goods or processed foods. Those who already have heart disease, diabetes or high LDL-cholesterol, or who have had a stroke, should limit their cholesterol to less than 200 mg per day.

Okay, okay...don't get too excited, yet.

It's ironic you posted this. I just took a look at my right carotid last week, and it looked perfectly fine. I average about 6 yolks per day - granted I'm only 33; but, still...

I despise so-called epidemiological studies like this that neglect to mention ALL of the biostatistics of their "survey."
The subjects were asked to detail "a wide range of their health habits." They zeroed in on egg yolks, specifically, but can we assume that many people who consume whole eggs are not the most health-conscious of folks and may have other poor habits leading to carotid wall thickening? I'd love to sift throught the remainder of the data with the proper time to search for other correlations. I wonder how much time they devoted.
Also, my suggestion above is not an admission that yolks are "bad." I'm only suggesting that many health-conscious people tend to eat only whites because of the widespread popular belief that the practice is "healthy." On the contrary, many people who eat whole eggs may engage in other TRULY unhealthy habits that facilitate health problems.

I'd also like to mention, too, that intimal (wall) thickening is very normal and common to form as people approach and enter middle-age; as is minimal plaque formation in the bulb and proximal portion of the internal carotid. I know because I work in a vascular lab and look at people's arteries and veins all day.

It's also worth mentioning that not everyone is affected the same. We, as health enthusiasts should know the role that individuality plays in bioeffects. The effects of cholesterol on different people vary greatly. Some people are genetically predisposed to having arterial problems without instigating the process.

I could ramble on, but the bottom line is I think that there is A LOT MORE RESEARCH that needs to be done before drawing a bold conclusion like the one above. Are the study results legit? Possibly. But, I have many doubts at this point based on the information provided.

If it makes you feel better, just abstain from eating egg yolks until next month's study, which reveals that yolks are healthy again.

They can't make up their fucking minds on this.  It can't be compared to smoking, that's just pathetic.

Well I will say this.  Monty is a good voice of reason and I didn't post the study as the end-all-be-all conclusion.  However, it is what I would call a potential red flag that needs follow up.  We should be aware that it is out there because it is an asterisk on a subject that most of us took for granted.  Do I believe it's possibly correct? Yes.  Would I change my diet based on it? No, not at this point.  Let's stay on top of this topic guys and see what develops.

HAHAHA!!!!

I realize how ridiculous that sounds/reads, but it's true. ;D

We did an impromptu test for far-zone artifact on our one duplex scanner. I held the transducer to my neck to create a vascular image sampling. I didn't actually use calipers to measure my vessel lumen thickness, but it was quite obvious to the naked eye that any intimal thickening I do have is extremely negligible.

Debunked

Excellent article also, thank you.  I would not go so far as to say "debunked" because he point out limitations in the study but there was no counter data- obviously there needs to be follow up research on this topic.

I don't buy into this bs at all. Just use your common sense. Eggs are 100% natural wholesome and packed with tons of good stuff. I don't need a study to tell me that eggs are healthy.

meta-analysis is not a 'study'

no double-blind trials have ever proven a link between egg consumption and anything

that bullshit was funded by statin sellers
