The best results that i ever get, are by morning cardio. Walking at a high pace, trying to achieve the identical heart rate of 120-130 palms.

When I am at the gym, i always do treadmill.

that is a good Ratio in recovery time. Normally Tabata is 20 secs to 10 secs recovery. so 1 min hard work to 15 secs recovery is very good.

It's also the quickest I can get my feet out of the rower's stirrups and get into position on the Airdyne. It takes exactly 10 minutes to complete the tabata and I am wiped. Rest for a minute and hit it again.

All the while, trying to watch Sports Center, of course.

Guys - dead serious - if you don't want to do simply running or jogging or bullshit - toss 25-35 lbs in a pack and go a few miles with it - combined cardio and strength

I took your advice and have been wearing my 40 pound weighted vest during my conditioning drills. It makes a huge difference.

Tough Mudder is in two weeks.  Running a ton.  Trails by me add about 2 min per mile for me.....lot of rocks.

Good luck

A lot of these permabulk fellas can't appreciate how cool trail runs are.
Props homes.

Yup 8)...there is a big park near the outskirts of my town. all different trails in the woods .rocks, branches, and even a log over water to climb over.
the whole park is two miles if you run the outskirts.

Running the whole park is two miles and we only ran it once....you cant run the whole way as you have to really watch your step with rocks and trees down on the trails plus my favorite, a log over a stream and mud you have to walk over carefully so you don't fall.

...so some is a run and some is a fast as you feel comfortable without falling.

yea, trails are tricky. My dumb ass has a half marathon on what is claimed to be one of the fastest courses to BQ for boston, for the full marathoners. Their first half of their full is a net drop then at half of it, which is where our half starts and flattens out but I didn't realize it was hard packed trail so not that it would really matter as I ran my fastest 10k race on similar trail I'm still shooting for my 2:10 half PR

I hate cardio indoors. No machine can give your body the natural training effects of running cross country. I train in the Gym too but i know 100% that i get a better workout outside. The cold and wet weather hardens you.

Just steady the spring and first half of summer are about endurance and I'm only doing three fall Hal marathons. I've decided not to do the trail one as it may trigger my hamstring tear which is still recovering. My average half time was 2:15 last year and this year it's 3:00.

I don't think that counts as cardio.

If it does, I did cardio at various times yesterday - getting from my car to the TD Bank garden, going down the street to talk to a neighbor and 30  sets:  walked from PC to kitchen and back.

1 mile run in 7:30

24 sets of 1 minute each 10 secs rest

Sprint  @ 10 mph / some ab / plank / hang or hold

Gets me 2 six minute miles broken up by the ab stuff.

No cardio benefit, IMO.

I've learned (through trial and error) that a little walking stops knee pain when I'm putting on muscle.

Body fat is okay-ish, not competing, or on a diet. I'm more on the lifestyle side of things with working out 5x/week, being reasonable with food, and taking care of myself.

No more crazy deadlifts or squatting until exhaustion. And let's face it... my legs never looked great, anyways. :)

http://www.plantronics.com/us/product/backbeat-fit

They are awesome - range is enough so I can just leave my phone anywhere in my basement gym and it reaches the headset.  No more stupid arm band.

Someone on my flag football team asked if he could work out with me...toned it down today as to not kill him....but he did pretty well.

1/2 mile run

1/4 mile 80lb sandbag front carry, 3 stops for pushup x 10 (no momentum type push up)

2 x ab circuit with 20lb medicine ball:

Kneeling push throw x 10
Side throw x 10 (left and right side)
1 Min plank

50 yard bear crawl
50 yard sandbag drag (80 lb)
25 yard clean and throw (80 lb)

Shuttle run:  width of football field / 3/4  / 1/2

1/4 mile farmer sand bag carry.

End.  I like to get about 5 miles in for this type of workout, but tempered it a bit.

I think so.

I didn't do shit for this stuff until March of 2013 when someone at work challenged me to do a Tough Mudder with them.  I was horrid, but once it clicks, it's pretty cool.  It's the one thing that actually has great residual benefits throughout the day.

If you go on Amazon, the price differs by color.......

Since I didn't care about looks, I got the red ones with orange trim for 80 bucks, rather than the blue/black ones that were going for up to $120

Only use for off road and flag football on the turf field.  1-2 times a week.

If I'm on a treadmill or road running, I use these horrible looking ATV-19s which I don't think they don't make anymore:

Kid next store works at Reebok so I get all their shoes half off - that was their attempt at a super off road shoe.  Thing is, it's the most cushiony/comfortable shoe I own, so I'll just run them into the dirt.

Funny thing is I feel like working out. There's just no energy for the lifts and everything in the upper body feels like knives are sticking in it.

I'll try fluids all day. If all else fails, I'll ride the bike or go back to the gym and use the battle ropes and some other exercises to force a good sweat.

Many on my team have followed my blueprint on how to dominate the  suburban Dad circuits.

We normally play against college kids.  In that league, we are a mid team - can beat anyone, but lose to anyone too....there's one team that's lost once in two seasons (to us, yay!) who dominates - has kids who run a 4.6, etc....

We are hoping we just ran into a particularly bad team (good guys though).   There are plenty of over 35 teams out there that I assume could dust us.

I use a baseball, but truthfully, the soft baseball the t ball players use or a llax ball is best.

I just stand on it and roll it back and forth for 1-2 minutes.  You need to hold onto something to do it.  Hurts like a bitch the first few times.

Hereby cease and desist:

Tricep kickbacks
Direct rear delt work
Leg machines
Thingies
Oblique  training (oh brother  ::) )

Add:

Bulgarian split squat

Weighted pull up
More running - some fast, some slow.

Super set all exercises with another.

I hardly ever do kickbacks
I like rear delt work!
Ok on the leg machines
I train obliques for a more powerfull golf swing!

Need to look up Bulgarian split squat and RDL.
Working on my pullups, I'm terrible, can't do four sets of ten with my own bodyweight :-[
Cant agree more on the running. starting again outside this weekend.

And I do a bunch of supersets.

Ok on the obliques....you've convinced me.....for now.   I remember hearing this same argument for baseball during the steroid era.  Players were using PTs who were giving them bodybuilding routines and telling them to avoid exercises that make the waist thicker.  Coaches were like "they NEED those muscles"....

Played tag with my girls kid and friends, a little soccer, a little kick ball, a little catch.
The park we were at has a huge field, bigger then a football field. so I ran ran from one end to the other, not a full sprint but a good speed, faster then a jog.

plus people walking their dogs and just people walking the trails.

If you did 3-4 weeks, of 3x per week of 20 min Body For Life ( ::)) cardio, you'd be able to run the three miles without stopping.

I will give you a couple methods:

BFL cardio example (treadmill)

Minutes: Speed - all speeds done for one minute after warmup.

1-2:  3 mph
3:  4 mph
4:  5
5:  6
6:  7
7:  4
8:  5
9:  6
10:  7
11:  4
12:  5
13:  6
14:  7
15:  4
16:  5
17:  6
18:  7
19:  8 mph
20:  4

20 minutes.  Each successive time, increase the bottom and intervals (4.2 mph, 5.2 mph etc...)  If you can the base level to 6 mph....you'll be able to run 5.

Or try this:  Jog mile.......run 1/4, walk 1/8, run 1/4 - until you get another mile....then jog last one......

Either one will help you ramp up, without actually running more miles.

I know where I stopped and next time I plan on passing that and keep building that way.
Last year I was able to run 5 miles without stopping but it was a slooow pace.
It's just tough for me to run outside right now cuz my work schedule has me getting home after dark.
After next weeks time change I'll be out and run 2-3 times a week.

We have a three home run over the fence rule. it's an out if you hit it out after three.
They hit three right away. I was playing right and that's pretty much where they hit every ball for the rest of the game...I seriously did a lot of running.

...and why is it that every time you have to chase down a long fly ball for the third out you then have to lead off the inning at bat >:( ???

One of my leagues has that same rule.

To flip sides, one of my infielders told me to "hustle up" once when I got off the field.  I explained - 2 games, 14 innings, 300 feet each way to the outfield and the bench, is 1.6 MILES more that I run than him each game to start, and that's without tracking the ball (and hitting tons of doubles, of course)........then I kindly asked him to shut the fuck up.

Re-introduction to cardio:

Take a deck of cards

Diamonds = Burpees
Hearts = Sit up
Clubs = Squat
Spade = Push up

Turn over a card, do the number on the card.  Run the deck.

12 sprints of 30 seconds at treadmill max (6 min mile pace), 20 seconds rest.

Short = about 36 min.

Did it after Wendler squat day

That was my first running in over a month, I think it was in the 22 minute range.  I did the first mile in 7, second in 7:30, last one in 8.  Last mile I had to push a bit, which was a wake up call since a 5k should barely break a sweat.  When I'm in better shape, I usually try to run at a 7:30 pace for anything in the 5-10 mile range.

For trails though, it all depends on the terrain.....can go up to 10 min miles when it's tough....

I train with a back pack often - it's a rucksack from www.goruck.com

What I've found is key is that you need one that sits high and tight on the back...so it doesn't bounce and kill your shoulders.

Also, depending on the weight used, it's best if you alter your running style to where you "roll" the heel to the front to minimize impact, since running with weight can mess up your joints.

There is a large parking deck near me -

Been doing a lot of stairs w the weight vest - shuffle across the top level and back down, go back up, etc - been doing that for 30 minutes at a clip - then a 30 minute ruck/shuffle w the weight vest.

1/4 ruck with 80 lb sandbag additional.   every 1/16 - 10 pushup on bag with ruck, + 10 bleach stair sets at half way.

50 yard sandbag drag, plank, 50 yard sandbag drag

Yes I still am. Tore my hamstring end of 2014 when I was finally going to achieve a sub 2 hour half but at mile 10 my hamstring tore and I limped to finish line. Last year my pace was horrible and still is but it's a work in progress. Just did my 10th half of the year Saturday and added miles as I'm doing the marine Corp marathon in 6 weeks. The humidity this summer was brutal even doing my long run on weekends starting at 5am

Clean / press / slam / burpee

After:

100 ft bear crawl forward to sandbag, then backwards, pulling/rowing sandbag back.

There will be no elipticals here.  Those are for those who take shaky sideways shirtless photos in gay men's roadside bathrooms.

My workout:

Inflammation is the latest cause of clogged arteries.

Supposedly eating sugar, starchy carbs, seed oils and trans fats causes it.

Processed foods are full of all that.

Increasing insulin sensitivity is key.

It's not easy to avoid those types of foods in today's society.

I don't each much direct sugar, almost no seed oils, and hardly any trans fats.  So that's good.

I use only olive oil and pure avocado oil for cooking.

As for starchy carbs, barely eat pasta anymore, almost no bread outside of sprouted grain, but do mix in sweet potato and rice......but I keep those portions small when compared to the meat and veg

I'm also big on well sourced meats, grass fed, no hormone, etc......I know you don't believe in that, but I do.

Good reading through this thread. Glad there are guys that train for endurance as well as the weights.

A few years ago I warmed up with a mile run in preparation for 40 yard sprints. I was pleased with the the speed I was generating for a guy in his 60's. Then a  pain in my Achilles but I pushed through. I think I partially tore it. I had a limp for awhile and couldn't run for a long time. Walking didn't aggravate it so I walked fast for 5 miles at a time. Roughly 3.8 MPH pace done mainly outside but sometimes on the treadmill. Found the fat was melting off doing this combined with weight lifting in the gym. Did this for a couple of years with very occasional runs. Found the walks took the spring out of my runs. My way to counter it was to include some mild sprinting during the walk. Nothing major but I would pick out a land mark like a tree and semi sprint to it. The estimated distances of the strides were 40 yards to 200 yard.

In my younger days I could string together sub 6 minute miles even though I was better at sprinting. I remember telling a guy I was training with, "You really have to be out of shape if you can't run a sub six minute mile."  Fast forward to my 60's and you could time my miles with an hour glass, lol.

Recently I slowly transitioned from fast walking to running. Thought it would easy considering my walking 5 miles miles at a fast pace but I firmly believe it took the spring out of my legs. Don't get me wrong. I think fast walking is one of the best things you can do for your health.

Regarding running I was making good progress until some current health issues came up.  The last run I had in the heat was 5 miles with the snail pace of 9 and change minute miles. As I age and with health issues I'm still fighting the good fight trying to stay in shape. Hopefully my health issues will improve and I can work on improving my cardio strength.

Not a bodybuilder here. I think if anyone wants to get into great shape a good approach is running and lifting.

No disagreements here.  Our super power in the animal kingdom is the ability to run distance, so we should do what we're designed to do.

Good news though - seems to be a general consensus that the best running to do to burn fat AND improve overall times is to run in zone 2 - basically the speed at which you can carry on a normal conversation.  It's literally like 10-11 miles for some.  I would google and read up on it.

For me, it took away the "guilt" of thinking I had to always be sub 8, and actually makes the runs more enjoyable.  I haven't been able to go that slow, but feel like a 9.5 gets me there.

You can't always bang you head against the wall every run even it feels good when you stop. Some runs have to be enjoyable. A lot of pure distance runners like to do one long day a week.  Many make it enjoyable by going out long but slow.

A great little book about Long Slow Distance was written by Joe Henderson in 1969 I believe. He was a college track distance runner. He got burnt out with all the work and said fuck it. He just wanted to enjoy the runs and he said no more races. He went out long and at an enjoyable pace. Every day he did that. Soon he was enjoying his runs again.  After awhile he thought about racing again but since he did no speed work he thought he wouldn't have the spring in his legs. He raced and I forget the distance, maybe a 10K, and he ran faster than he ever ran before. I think the moral to the story is that a steady diet of LSD runs isn't great training for racing but he allowed himself to recover from the  grueling college track team training and he returned with great results.

I wish I could apply that to lifting but it seems it's always balls to the wall with me. I would have gone a lot further if I knew easy weeks were important. I think it's was Robby in his prime would do his three day split hard and the next three day split was moderate.  That might be a good approach.  Others cycle down to intensity. They hit the wall then begin another cycle.

Today I did something I rarely do these days. Having some health problems but I felt decent and pushed it hard. I did 8 x 440 yards increasing the intensity each set.  My shirt weighed about 5lbs when I finished, lol.  Then I did some heavy bag work. Tomorrow I will do some distance. Hope the intervals put some spring in my step for a good run.

I'm always torn in my fitness journey because I split my time between lifting and running. That way I ensure I'm not good at either, lol.

That's why the military stresses fitness. Endurance is what matters in times of war and the apocalypse.  There is no weight lifting in SEAL or Ranger training.  Being able to be awake for 20 hours and to cover 20-30 miles walking at a fast pace will be important.

Of course both. Just using the example of you can't go balls to the wall all the time with running. You need down days.

Most milers split their training in quarters.  One quarter will be high intensity and low intensity 10-15 mile runs. Next quarter will be something like one or two interval track days with the other days being something like 8 to 10 mile runs. Next quarter will be even split between intervals and distance. The last quarter cycle will be all intervals. No hard fast rules some use third cycles instead of quarters. Some use track intervals year round with their distance days.

When I take Bubba for walk it's like training because he's always pulling the leash.

Due to age and health I have been slowing down but I hope to rectify it. Last week my long run was a slow 5 miler.  I was running a paved one mile loop in a park. It stinks when I see runners go by me when I know in my youth I would have easily left them in the dust. Going to put less time in weight lifting and more time doing cardio.

Being in the walking boot, cardio is limited.

Downloaded a workout program on the Oculus Quest called Supernatural just for a goof.

Gushing sweat 15 min in.

Probably because my conditioning is bad after a month in the boot, but better than nothing.

I just started taking Glucosamine. I started to notice that when I walk while playing golf or go for trail hikes my lower back starts to feel sore and my hips really start to tighten up almost like they are compressing and my strides feel like they are getting shorter and it's harder to take normal full step.
It says it takes around a month before it helps.

I think it's more then that. More like old age, I even feel it walking up stairs.

I've noticed that's true. Kind of kicks in subtly you just realize one day that you don't feel as tight and achy as before.

I have taken glucosamine/chondroitin for years. I can feel the difference if I stop for a few weeks.

We’ve all known for a long time that chaos “takes it”.

Nothing like talk of "taking it" to bring the Ugandan Sailor Sucker out of retirement.

I walk the dogs 3+ miles 5-7 days a week. Going to get back on the heavy bag soon.

After a month and I can tell the difference. It does really help with leg and back tightness.

I might give it a shot but I wonder if it works? https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-latest-on-glucosaminechondroitin-supplements-2016101710391

When I have joint issues I take an anti inflammatory prescription drug called meloxicam. For me at least it works insanely well. Arthritis runs in my family and I have been abusing my body since I was a teenager with working out. I hurt my foot years ago and the doc gave me 7.5 MG of the stuff. While I was taking it for the foot I noticed my bad shoulders felt amazing. Also felt great going down stairs in the morning where I normally go down like Frankenstein until my joints are warmed up. With the drug I flew down the stairs like a teenager in the morning.

Recently I have been feeling pain on one hip joint all the way down to the knee. I was limping around. On another occasion a doc gave me 25mg of meloxicam that I had in the medicine cabinet. It worked like a miracle on my hip and leg. The pain was gone in two days. I actually trained legs yesterday.  On my third day of the stuff. It's Wednesday and I think I should be good to go for a long run this coming Friday. I guess I'm a super reactor to the drug.

I couldn't help you with the arthritis side of glu/chon but I know that my joints/tendons felt better after about a month on it. Consistency is key with it, you really need to keep on it to feel the effects. I feel like it helps with the recovery from workouts.

Sounds about right 4-6 weeks is typical for starting to feel better.

Try it but like chaos said it takes about 4-6 weeks before you notice it helping.
