Title: High School Teacher in CA told his class
Post by: Coach is Back! on January 31, 2013, 04:52:50 PM
..told the students in my son's geometry class "I don't care if you pass or fail, either way I get paid". BTW, this is my kids first year ever in PS. Nice to know some teachers in public school don't give a shit. The good news is my kid transferred out and into another class pronto along with about 15 others. That teacher now has one less class.

That was his goal to get them pissed enough off to leave = less work for him and still get paid. Obama will be proud.

A republican should no, it is individual responsibility and hard work that will get you that passing grade. Did you expect the teacher to just hand him his grade like welfare? Is your kid some kind of dummy?

Teacher lost the class because out of the two or three classes she was teaching per day, over 80% of the students we not passing. That kind of ratio falls on ineffective teaching. My kid has no less than B in his other classes. The most of the others also have high grades in other classes as well. I have about 8 kids in my gym with the same teacher that say the same thing as well as his baseball coach.

Maybe the teacher was frustrated because the kids are idiots and refuse to retain anything they learn.  If the kids don't care why should the teacher?

teachers get tenure, and they cannot be fired, no matter how bad the grades are.

they teach for 3 years, and they're guaranteed a job for the next 27.  As long as they don't punch a parent or molest a student, they cannot be fired.

That's horrible. What else I think is wrong is alla a kid has to have to play a sport is a 2.0 GPA. That's criminal.

That's a terrible message to teach the children.

Teachers should...teach! And, if a great majority of children are failing -- it's on the teacher.

I'm thinking maybe the teacher meant to convey a harsh tone that leniency is not to be expected and that the student needs to take responsibility for his/her grade -- but presented this admirable message in the wrong way.

2.0 is straight C's.   It's not ideal, but it's "good enough".

in florida, 1/3 of high school students do not graduate.  68% graduation rate last time I saw.

Why?  Lots of reasons.  One reason is poor teachers, as your thread notes.  The problem is this... teaching pays what, $30k a year for a 4-year degree that requires FOUR unpaid internships while you're in school, including a FIVE MONTH unpaid teaching full-time position.  Yes, imagine any other field where you have to work HALF A YEAR for FREE before you have your degree, so you can start at $30 grand.

Raise the standards, Coach.  Pay that Geometry teacher $80k and require him to have a masters and re-interview for his job every year based upon results.   but then, who pays that $80k?  raise taxes?  federal govt?  The states can barely pay $30k a teacher now.

JV .305 (he's a sophomore)

355 squat
325 DL (straight bar)

I don't let him bench right now being so close to the beginning of the season but he's good for 4 x 5 on DB press with 80's.

many of these kids know the art of telling their parents and ommiting the parts that incriminate them.
And making out said teacher to be some horrific teacher, therefore getting themselves transferred to a class where the teacher is "cool"and "gives" grades...
Seems like Coach may be falling for it.

When I was student teaching 6th grade, there was this girl who wasn't liked and was kinda "rotund". Apparently, she could go to the bathroom "anytime she wanted". Well...one time a girl had a birthday...and said "rotund" girl gave her a handmade birthday card. It read, "Happy Birthday____...."
And when you opened it up, "You are such a bitch, I hope you...."
Now mind you, the birthday girl was well liked.

Well, we had a parent teacher meeting about her behavior with her father, who was a cop. He didn't believe anything we said. I told him, I don't get paid for student teaching, and then I pulled out the birthday card his daughter did. And I told him to explain this. This is the work your child does instead of listening in class or doing class work...
He had no answer.

Yeah I'm not one to tell someone how to raise there kids (I don't have any so what do I know) but I'm not seeing baseball in this one's future.  There are probably four or five kids on every high school team in the country who hit .275 or better.

True and we've talked about this. He sometimes has a problem of waiting for the "perfect pitch" and freezes if it's not where he wants it. It's frustrating but batting coach are working on it. He needs to understand at that level, almost every pitch is hittable even if a little off the strike zone. Something that can be fixed and I'm (nor his coaches) are worried too much. He made the team more on his catching skills with the 1.87 POP and throw down average 77-80mph to second. As a sophomore, that puts him at college level times.

why should the teachers care?
Every parent thinks their child is "Above Average" and "Special", every child in turn thinks that they are special.
Add in no support from administration. Add in that it is no longer an attractive career choice, especially for women, so you either get people who don't care, or those learn to not care.

It's just symtomatic of a society that is going downhill..

Again, why should they care, there are no incentives to care.
Bottom line, America again has shot itself in the foot.

Alot of my college professors did this sort of thing and its mostly true. It's up to the student to learn what is taught (aka personal responsibility).

It's also up to the teacher to teach the course that makes it understandable to the student. Again, if you have most of the class switch because they can't pass the course and the remainder of his/her schedule are A's B's, there is a disconnect between the teacher and student. If the case is that they're doing for the money, then they should get the fuck out, but unions are pretty much useless in that situation.

there is the school of thought that teachers must teach in a way to make the kids want to learn. But, then there is the point that a child must come to class willing and ready to learn. So, it's two-fold.

One could say, if the majority of the class doesn't get it, then they are either idiots, or they weren't trying.
Or it could be that the teacher is not teaching in an effective way. Or it could be a combo of all of that.

????? Explain that one. Granted not the best on the team but .305 isn't the worst. He did well enough at the try out.

When you say team usa, I'm assuming that's the best 16 or so players in the country for his age group. None of the best 16 year olds, since you said he was a sophomore, in the country hit .275 and they would never even see a single pitch at the jv level for a public high school, I don't care how good this schools program is.

That's like saying a basketball player is trying out for the Olympic dream team, but plays in the d-league. If your son was truly one of the best in the country among sophomores, he would destroy 99% of all other Varsity baseball players. And .275 is very very average. There are thousands of guys doing that.

Yeah, the conservatives claim they don't want government involved in their life and then complain the government isn't giving them enough. Fucking whiny bitches.

I think you missed my last post. HS season doesn't start for another month or so. He will play varsity. He made the USA team based on invite/tryout. He made the team. What can I say. Read my last post.

Nice to know some teachers in public school don't give a shit. The good news is my kid transferred out and into another class pronto along with about 15 others. That teacher now has one less class.

And he'll still get paid.

I have 2 18u players in our gym. One probably going #1 in the draft (catcher) if he doesn't go to USC. He and my son train together and he helps with his catching skills

Your a moron, it's high school shit not rocket science. You have standardized testing, either the kid was passed when he shouldn't, or your kid is fucking with you.

Hi Coach.  Just a quick thought there; before judging the teacher on this one comment, you should look at the context in which it was made.  My spouse is a jr. high school teacher (gr. 7-9), and based on many conversations I've had with her about problem students, I can easily rhyme off (without hisitation) 7-10 instances in which I would have made a very similar comment.  Actually, I would bet the house that 100% of teachers have that same thought, at one time or another, when dealing with a troubled kid that insists on drawing the rest of the class (teacher included) into their vortex.  Mind you, the vast majority of teacher don't actually speak their minds due to repercussion from the school board.

You really sounding like a bleeding heart lib here, you know that eh.

It's funny how education differes from one country to another. In Poland "private school" means low level of education, school for rich, spoiled kids with many problems usually. Best unis, high schools etc. are public.

If someone sends his kids to private school it's like "wtf, are your kids so dumb?". I think it has to do with the fact that level of education in Poland is very high.

Got it. Still a stupid thing to say. Regardless, the best thing you can do for your now PS son is to study with him -ie. go over homework with him, read with him and stay on top of stuff. And when I say read with him, I mean read his stuff with him, but also have him see you reading by yourself; it fosters a culture of literacy/skills/curiosity,etc. Not a better thing out there. Best of luck.

I agree, the class he had was geometry. Through his schools website, we check the portal weekly. It wasn't like he wasn't trying (can't speak for the other kids). He transferred out from that geo teacher and is in another class. He said this new teacher is quite a bit more organized with his teaching and so far he seems to understand it better. One test and two quizzes since the beginning of the new semester and he scored high on all.

We have an agreement that he has to keep his grades to a certain standard (ours, not the school) in order for him to play, he knows thats the priority, not baseball or anything else. Even the young athletes that come into our gym know that they have to carry a 3.0 min to be in the program. He's no exception. Me along with other parents found it unusual that most of the class (including honors students) were having a difficult time.
