Pre Existing Conditions
« on: May 03, 2017, 03:44:58 PM »
Can someone explain WHY it would be a good idea to leave it off any healthcare bill?

Other than for the insurance companies, what benefit does it offer of taking it away?

It brings costs down significantly.

This is a bit before my time, but were individuals denied Medicaid for preexisting conditions?

Only for those lucky enough to not have any.

Otherwise some people will have to decide whether or not they can afford to cover themselves for something they  have no control over.

So cancer or thyroid problems or kidney stones, etc... are accidents like a house fire?

It's thinking like this that actually empowers the insurance companies to rip you off.

It's not insurance at that point.  It's like buying auto insurance after the car is wrecked

Right.

What we are actually doing is burying a welfare component into an insurance policy. The problem with doing that (and we’re seeing it here) is that insurers are very good at insuring, but absolutely terrible at welfare.

There is no answer to this type of coverage besides single-payer universal health care and requiring all health care providers to be not-for-profit.

That is if you even want to talk about health insurance, which is kind of dumb, since you are trying to insure against a virtual certainty, where the only question is how much will the damage be.

A car wreck can be blamed on someone and held to a fault.

Whose fault is it if you get cancer?  If you do get it, you have to choose between life or death if you can't afford coverage?

I'm very libertarian and think every functional adult should take personal responsibility.
BUT...
The 1984 Supreme Ct decision forces hospitals to treat people in the ER.
This cost gets passed on to our premium rates.

Sounds bad , but, Medicaid expansion can prevent a lot of that.

Who pays for Medicaid expansion? And How?

well it's an idiotic comparison to start with but if we're conflating a fire at your house to your health care then  that's the equivalent of an unexpected health emergency

let's review the idiotic comparison even further

If you own a property and have a mortgage you are REQUIRED to have insurance

If you let your insurance lapse the lender will purchase insurance and send you the bill

If your property is free and clear you would be a world class moron not to have insurance

Let's say your home is worth 300k (not where I live but average nice house in this country) your annual insurance would cost ~ 450 bucks or 37.50

If you could buy health insurance for 37.50 a month this entire topic would be a non-issue

let's take this idiotic premise a bit further

let's say you own a 300k home free and clear and you're stupid enough to not have insurance and it burns down

you can still sell the land or build a new house or just go buy a new house

If you have a catastrophic health crisis and it's fatal (your house burns down) you can't just go out and get another life (well maybe you can if you believe in reincarnation)

so yeah, health insurance is exactly the same and insurance on your home

really no difference at all

ER also does not chemo and cancer treatment

can you buy comprehensive health insurance for ~ 37.50 a month

If your your house burns down can you rent or buy a new house?

there is no comparison between insurance for your health and insurance for your house

Also, if you have cancer you can go to the emergency room over and over again for complications

let's say you have a brain tumor, you will likey have seizures and with no health care what do you think your family will do

you'll have a seizure and they will call an ambulance and you will wind up in the emergency room

Not paying for people's health insurance is now being equated with killing them.

Great. It's pure virtue signalling. If liberal's really feel this outraged about preexisting conditions, why don't they just offer to help pay those individual's bills once we get rid of Obama care?

My dog doesn't have health insurance but I offer to pay his bills because I love him. Plus he's predisposed to hip dysplasia

Elizabeth Warren on House GOP healthcare plan: 'People will die'
washingtonexaminer.com ^ | 5/4/17 | Kyle Feldscher

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren called the House GOP's plan to repeal and replace parts of the Affordable Care Act a "cruel" way to enrich the wealthy and cut insurance from many Americans.

"Trumpcare isn't a health care bill. A bill that destroys health care for millions to shovel cash to the rich isn't a health care bill," Warren tweeted.

Although the Trump administration's new healthcare bill has yet to pass the Senate, Hollywood stars have already vowed revenge on the GOP.

On Thursday afternoon, the House voted narrowly (217 to 213) to repeal Obamacare and replace it with the American Health Care Act. Immediately, celebrities condemned the "felons," accusing them of "entitlement," "fraud" and "hypocrisy." Many urged resistance, while actor Ron Perlman even threatened California's Republican House members.
