Is bodybuilding for misfits?
« on: April 18, 2006, 04:27:33 PM »
In my life when I was in my best contest shape and really "hardcore" about this game, my life was a bit of a mess overall. Now, that I enjoy as a hobby, don't compete, etc, my life is pretty "together" in terms of career, marriage , finances, etc.I know that many others have this same experience as well.Every time I consider getting really hardcore again and making contest level bodybuilding a major part of my life again, I think back to those days and remember being kinda unhappy and stressed overall.

I am sure their are some , happy well adjusted hard core bodybuilders, but I don't see too many in my gym and contest travels.

Intersting info on Keith S, thanks for the links. What keeps me in/around bodybuilding is the "social stuff" now more than other factors. Bodybuilding is like some crazy, but beloved, disfunctional family complete with a crazy , drunk uncle in the basement  :D

When I was hardcore and no holds barred I really had little to lose . Now I am pretty happy and secure, but miss the whole contest atmosphere. Ya know seeing all the other bodybuilders with gaunt hungry faces, pro tan caked on, etc.

in general...pro bodybuilding...yes in one way or another

usually people who have an issue with self esteem.  Dad was never encouraging enough, or maybe the guy is too short so he feels he should be big.

Of course then you get the guys like Arnold who just want to dominate and rule the world...no self esteem issues there except he was trying to prove himslef to his father

Not just bodybuilding, but gyms in general.

In my experience, 80% of regular lifters (men and women) are off balance.  Myself (and you) included.

bodybuilding for me was always about doing something I enjoy.....

it was something that didn't come easily......

it was never about getting women.....it was never about being a tough guy in a bar.......never about outdoing anyone.

bbing is what you make of it......i don't compete anymore......just like going to the gym and trying to better myself.

many times i get more of a mental benefit from it.

bbing can be very positive.....imho.

i would say no....bbing is not for misfits.....bbing is for people that want to improve themselves.

"stupid gay narcissistic muscle bound freaks" was how arnold described the Bodybuilding community in the mid 60's.

Find someone on this site that doesn't follow one of those and I'll give you 100 bucks.

P.S. Just a hint not many here are muscle bound.
