Yet he still drives the same old truck, lives modestly and frugal, uses coupons ( ::)), eats at fucking mcdonalds..what an asshole. What is the point of having all that money(opportunity) and not do anything with it?? Its like a slap in the face of everyone else.

I think it's about comfort and safety.   His house was 22,000 - and that was 60 years ago.  It's a NICE house.  His dad was a stockbroker and he had earned 50 grand on his own before he was 18.

He loves his home.  Everything is where he knows and wants it.  Probably close to his church, favorite store, neighbors he grew up with.  He could move to NYC or LA and have an amazing condo overlooking the ocean or Central Park...

I think many of us would vacation like that - but would like to keep our lives somewhat the same if we came into 50 billion dollars.   We've been doing the same thing for decades, partially because we like it.

Plus, who knows what kind of awesomeness he has built into that home.  I'd have secret compartments, underground bowling alleys, bomb shelters, titty bars 200 feet underground... it could be great.

I would be building an Iron Man suit (minus the fusion energy source of course-but id be pouring money into this type of research)...id have  myself built a custom mini-sub and explore the worlds oceans...id buy a sports team in a long struggling franchise and build them up...id have millions of acres of land around the world, to explore, safari, shoot..id commision an attempt to build a replica of the great pyramid and use the lessons to finally answer some of history's great mysteries..id help millions of people..not thru some faceless 'charities', but directly...i would sponsor and host world summits for solving mysteries, and empowering research in certain key areas.

But this guy...he clips coupons and goes to mcdonalds. What an asshole.

he's given away 13 billion that we know about, just donated.

he's 82.  Probably takes a lot of work just to make coffee and answer emails.  He's driven to make $, but outside of that, doesn't seem to be the ironman suit type.  He might be in diapers by now, who knows.

then again, if he was cool enough to build a cool suit like that, he'd probably keep it secret.

The fact that he is still working at 82 despite having infinity money speaks volumes about what im saying. What is the point of having all that wealth? The guy would work even if he wasnt getting paid. Hes the kind of person that just does work for fun. In his free time...he probably thinks about work.

Yeah i dont understand these types of assholes. The guy has enough money to do things we can only dream about..his possibilities are virtually limitless. Id have so many awesome projects and adventures going on all the time.

I believe it was Gates who said that they aren't really giving their money away but basically just creating different financial structures outside the World banks and putting it in areas of their interest...

Buffet starting out selling lemonade from a stand near his house. He's typical of his caste in that he viewed education as the path most traveled and saw opportunities to make money wherever he saw humans. That he became fabulously wealthy in the process doesn't really interest him. He gets his nuts off by making deals and rescuing shit companies and making them shiny and profitable again. He could give a fuck less about the power of money, other than as a tool to get push his objectives through.

Who said he is on Wall Street?

I said, that "the vast majority of people within wall street barely have time to "get out and get in" a good meal throughout the day". The nature of the work that he does goes hand-in-hand with what is done on a daily basis in Wall Street. Due to the nature of the work done, you barely have time to breathe, let alone get a good meal in.

Regarding there being "so much hype" surrounding Buffet, it's deserved. The man has led one of the most successful financial holding companies in American History (Berkshire). Berkshire, under his command, has grown their book value by just about 20% each year for the last 45-50 years. They have diversified into owning shares of well over a dozen other companies AND Berkshire has managed to beat the S&P's rate of return since the late 60's. I don't think anyone even comes close.

So, about the hype.... yeah, it's warren-ted.

LOL - well you are the one bringing the diets of "People in Wall St" into a discussion on Warren Buffets diet - a man who works in Omaha.

Anyway - what is it in the "nature of their work" on Wall St that forces them onto shitty diets? Wall St is pretty diverse and I don't think you'll find many investment bankers or hedge fund managers eating McDonalds. In fact, the lunches of investment bankers are quite legendary.

If anyone in the financial industry has shitty diets, it's the pit traders.  Pretty much the bottom rung in the financial industry. Trading pits are in Chicago & New York - all the guys waving their arms around wearing funny colored jackets. Has to be said, they can go all day without a break and have lunch shipped in but that's not the rule. You only have to look at the way the markets die off at lunchtime to realize everyone has an hour off and just the grunts are left to take care of things during lunch time.

As for Buffet hype - of course he's a success. One of my friends has written a book about him (Buffet Beyond Value) - but trying to find out what color underpants the man wears on a Tuesday to try and emulate his success is pointless. Everyone picks over Buffets habits as if repeating them will make you a success. Fact is Buffet buys companies and then manages them, so unless you have the cash to buy enough of a company to change the way it is managed, attempting to emulate the man is pointless.

What a retard  ::)

Thats not the point retard...the point is that he has accumulated a godlike amount of wealth, and has opportunities everyone else on earth can only dream of...and he does nothing with it. It is just a real shame..very painful to see..someone with the one i a billion opportunity, to just squander it.
And the thing with his family...i get the whole not wanting your kids to be spoiled and to teach them responsibility, but its a whole different thing to be super stingy with them. He is one of earth's richest men..and he makes his son pay him rent when he stays at at the house? ::) the dude is an asshole.

As was said earlier, he doesn't care about money other than as a tool to push through his work aims. He probably never expected to be as wealthy as he is, and made no plans for what to do with it if ever he became exceedingly wealthy. He just honestly really enjoys working, and the money is a footnote.

Would a guy who spends his wealth more conspicuously be more respectable? Hardly. Take a guy like Elton John who spends about $1m on self-indulgent shopping trips a month, or Michael Jackson who spent the best part of a $1b fortune on living in a 24hr carnival/theme park and other extravagant purchases. That was just as wasteful and contributed as good as nothing to anyone else.

Such people often have a very rigid values  where they despise anybody who hasn't made it - law of the jungle.
They donate to "charity" because it empowers them as "well meaning" and they can influence politics via the NGO's they're feeding money stolen from the normal dupes caught in the 9/5 system.

It's his money, he can do with it whatever he wants, idiot. Dude is 80+, what is he supposed to do? Waste it on hookers and pornstars.

I've mad respect for people that wealthy living a normal, regular family life withstanding all the unnecesseary, superficial temptations going hand in hand with being super-wealthy.

In an interview Buffet was asked why he doesn't buy himself a bigger luxury home. He answered: "My house is cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and big enough for me. What else do I need? If it would improve my life quality I'd get a different house, but it wouldn't". :)

Yup - bottom rung employees in any industry end up working hard. Analysts are pretty low down the food chain.

But traders - depends what you mean by that? People that work positions for other firms or those on prop desks? Those that are employed to fill positions are really doing grunt work. Traders on prop desks somewhat different, they do more coke and probably aren't hungry.  ;)

A friend brother runs a hedge fund in NY and has a very steady family oriented life. "Hedge fund" is a pretty wide net - it's effectively a classification of funds that are less regulated than mutual funds. There is no reason to think that any particular hedge fund would even be trading on a daily basis.

I know of a boutique fund that does nothing more than act as a big prop - loaning out money to traders for a share of the return. One chap that I bump into socially on occasion (but nothing like a friend) trades $30M of their money. They effectively take risk and whine when he's on a less than stellar run. On a daily basis, they don't do an awful lot.

I personally trade Eurex (EuroStoxx and Bund) and the CME (spoos) and the activity INVARIABLY dies at lunchtime - although it's just been dead all day today. So 12pm-2pm there's very little activity. Cause so many traders are at lunch.

In fact, I really wish they wouldn't take lunches and the market would zip about all day.

lol - I wasn't calling you a retard.

I was sarcastically calling Buffet a retard for enjoying what he does.

I can't explain it. It's not what I'd do - either the way he spends it or the way he shares it.

I think he's looking @ the son thing as teaching him some values but I'd personally buy my son a house. Set him up in business.  On the other hand - could well end up a spoilt little shite.

Yep. Him and Larry Ellison (Oracle corporation) both live the lifestyle of a billionaire. But they're also very dedicated to their careers and are said to be perfectionists, so there's no replacing hard work with just fucking around and having fun. That's something they know how to draw the line on when need be.
