I had heard about this before but I think this is the first time I have seen the video. The crazy thing is they only threw a local yellow and the race continued on. If some more people had been there trying to turn over the car or they had had more than one fire extinguisher, he might have lived.

Yeah in the full version (which I couldn't find) it takes 8 minutes for a safety car to arrive and throw a blanket over the car so the race can continue. Kevin Purley could hear Roger Williamson, his friend, shouting "get me out of here" from inside the car. Literally the most disturbing thing I have ever seen.

Very harrowing.

I seen a 16year old getting crushed by a bus before. I heard her squealing that she didn't want to die.

At least they guy tried his best to save his friend. I think a photo of Purley looking distraught won the 1973 world press photo award.

Sh!t you actually saw the bus crush a 16 year old in real life?! That's fucked! Yeah you're right about the press photo award. Purley got the St George medal for bravery too. But to me the award seems like a bit of a glossing over the fact that lots more people should have acted the same way. The crowd were held back by guards, but boy those marshalls not wearing fire-protective clothing do look unavoidably pathetic just standing there as if they don't care.

Yea looks poorly organised and noone seems trained. It looks horrible when so much could have been done but in reality nothing was.

If I remember correctly, the Williamson crash was said to "have everything that can go wrong, go wrong." The crash, the announcers ended up pulling out the PA system wires delaying the Emergency authorities being notified....just everything went wrong.
Horrible crash, and that is no way to see a friend pass on. :-X (if there was any good way) :'(

I've read this speculation that they most likely thought it was the friend's own car, which would of course be empty, that he tried to turn over, so they didn't hurry.

there was a race that Niki Lauda won in which an English driver (Pryce?) ran over a teenage marshal killing him... the marshal was carrying a fire extinguisher which would up almost decapitating Pryce

Nascar was worse back then. Now, Formula 1 is the leader in safety regs and regulations thanks to the FIA governing body.
