Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand ripped for nominating campaign donor to lifetime judgeship
NY Post ^ | March 18, 2022
Posted on 3/18/2022, 9:39:31

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is under fire for recommending one of the top donors to her campaign, Jennifer Rearden, for a lifetime post as a Manhattan federal judge.

Gillibrand (D-NY) took in more than $30,000 in contributions from Rearden, and fellow Democrats are also fuming about the judicial candidate’s membership in an “elite” Connecticut country club that has been accused of maintaining a mostly white membership.

President Biden accepted Gillibrand’s recommendation and nominated Rearden in January.

Rearden gave Gillibrand and her political action committee $11,900 after telling the senator she wanted the job, Federal Election Commission filings show — and even hosted “several” fundraisers for Gillibrand at the Midtown offices of her law firm, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.

I hate Gillibrand.  Would love to see her primaried and ousted.

What ‘Vibrancy’: New York City Hit By Surprisingly High Jobless Rate As Workers Fail To Return. So what happens to all the empty commercial-office buildings?
InvesBrain ^ | 03/22/2022 | Tyler Durden

The percentage of white-collar workers in New York City office buildings remains abysmal. Workers aren't returning, and it's crushing the local economy.

NYC's 7.6% unemployment rate is shockingly high compared with the rest of the country (nationwide average of 3.8%) as an economic recovery is slow to materialize, according to Bloomberg. There could be a muted recovery without five-day-a-week commuters because their impact on the local economy is substantial.

Keycard swipes tracked by security company Kastle Systems show NYC offices are about 36% occupied, far below pre-COVID levels. Even as companies announced return-to-office dates, many implemented a hybrid work model that allows white-collar workers to work remotely part of the time. Some companies have entirely reduced their corporate footprint and enforced remote working for some employees.

According to the latest survey by The Partnership for New York City business group, only 16% of top NYC firms say daily attendance in their Manhattan office was above 50%. The poll showed that about 75% of employers delayed return-to-office plans due to a spike in COVID infections year, and 22% said they don't have a timeline on when offices will be full again.

On Oct. 29, 2020, we noted that NYC's recovery will be a "long slog" from here as the downturn will last well into 2023 and lag the rest of the nation. It seems we're right, and the source of a lackluster recovery is directly related to workers that aren't returning to offices.

Mark Vitner, a Wells Fargo senior economist, said the city is "enduring a slower recovery because it is so dependent on the office and entertainment sectors."

"Cities that were quicker to reopen following the initial lockdowns at the start of the pandemic have also tended to see stronger recoveries," Vitner said. What may have damned the metro area were public officials and their inability to lift health mandates that crippled the local economy, forcing tens of thousands of people, if not more, out of the area and to suburbia or Florida.

Newly elected Mayor Eric Adams has argued that remote and hybrid work situations are crushing service-oriented businesses in the city that solely rely on white-collar workers, such as the food and entertainment industry.

Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages data shows there are 275,000 fewer paychecks in just Manhattan compared to pre-COVID times. Manhattan jobs account for a whopping 57% of the city's overall economy.

"Manhattan is an enormous economic and social driver," said Andrew Rigie, the New York City Hospitality Alliance executive director.

Manhattan's unemployment rate is the lowest among the boroughs. The Bronx has had the slowest employment growth.

As firms fled Manhattan during COVID to places like Florida and Texas, the borough's financial industry has likely seen another peak in jobs. Also, factor in the increasing amount of automation in the financial sector, and the job situation in Manhattan looks even bleaker.

NYC leads the way in lackluster employment gains.

Meanwhile, the Manhattan housing market has been on fire as the number of sales spike and median rents soar.

An economic revival in NYC will lag the rest of the country as long as remote work persists. So what happens to all the empty commercial-office buildings?

Horrific moment gang of four brutally beat 14-year-old in random attack inside a Brooklyn train station in latest act of gratuitous violence on NYC's subway
Daily Mail UK ^ | March 23, 2022 | Adam Solomons
Posted on 3/23/2022, 1:31:19 PM

A 14-year-old boy was punched in the head and body countless times by a gang of attackers at a Brooklyn train station in a seemingly random attack.

The unidentified victim was targeted at Van Siclen Avenue station in East New York, Brooklyn. Video released by the NYPD shows the perpetrators making their way into the station before choosing to beat up the boy.

The gang of four then proceed to violently attack the youngster, punching him repeatedly in the body and head as he tries to protect his face.

After the vicious attack, which took place last Monday, the gang were seen fleeing the station to unknown whereabouts.

The victim sought urgent medical attention at a local hospital.

He suffered swelling and bruising in the attack, according to city cops, who have put out an urgent plea for information about the gang.

The savage beating is just the latest case of gratuitous violence on the subway - despite new mayor Eric Adams' pledge to crack down on transit chaos.

Overall, the city is reeling from a February crime wave that saw incidents spike a staggering 60% over the same period last year - as well as a number of headline-grabbing incidents in recent days that have chilled residents.

Supreme Court Strikes Down New York’s Proper Cause Requirement for Concealed Carry
bretibart ^ | 23 Jun 2022 | AWR HAWKINS
Posted on 6/23/2022, 12:11:47 PM by MarvinStinson

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on June 23 that New York’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permit issuance is unconstitutional.

New York State Rifle and Pistol Association [NYSRPA] v. Bruen centered on denials for permits under New York’s concealed carry permitting law. The NYSRPA filed suit claiming that one of its members was eligible for a permit but was denied because of New York’s requirement that concealed carry applicants prove why they need to carry a gun.

The case ultimately dealt with the scope of the Second Amendment — whether the right to keep and bear arms applies only in the home or outside the home as well.

When SCOTUS granted cert in the case the NYSRPA responded:

"This case challenges New York’s requirement that applicants demonstrate “proper cause” to carry a firearm. New York regularly uses this requirement to deny applicants the right to carry a firearm outside of their home. The NRA believes that law-abiding citizens should not be required to prove they are in peril to receive the government’s permission to exercise this constitutionally protected right."

NRA-ILA director Jason Ouimet also commented on the suit after the Supreme Court agreed to hear it:

"Under current New York law, a law-abiding resident becomes a felon the moment he or she steps outside their home with their firearm. This is a clear infringement of the Second Amendment. We look forward to a future in which law-abiding Americans everywhere have the fundamental right to self-defense the way the Constitution intended."

The immediate impact of the June 23 ruling is that New York’s proper cause requirement is struck down. What is yet to be seen is how this decision will impact other states–like California and New Jersey, both of which have concealed carry issuance guidelines similar to New York’s.

NYPD releases images of suspects in mugging of Mayor Adams’ aide
WPIX11 ^ | 07/07/2022 | Aaron Feis
Posted on 7/7/2022, 2:42:39 PM by thegagline

Investigators released surveillance images late Wednesday of two suspects in the gunpoint robbery of an aide to Mayor Eric Adams.

The 33-year-old victim, believed to be a member of the mayor’s press team, was walking near York Street and Hudson Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when two muggers shoved him to the ground, according to police.

The robbers, one of whom displayed a gun, snatched the victim’s wallet and two cellphones, then fled into the nearby Farragut Houses development, authorities said. Police have previously said that one of the crooks fled on a Citi Bike. Officials said that the victim declined medical attention.

In a statement after the incident, mayoral Press Secretary Fabien Levy said that the mugging underscores the need to get guns and criminals off of city streets.

***

“As the mayor said today, he wants results as quickly as possible, and while we have seen progress over the last few months — taking more than 3,000 guns off the streets and reducing shootings and homicides by double digits — there is no overnight fix,” Levy continued. “New York City employees are city residents, and we will do everything in our power to keep all New Yorkers safe.”

Manhattan DA Charges Bodega Worker with Murder After Stabbing Violent Ex-Con in Self-Defense (VIDEO)
Gateway Pundit ^ | July 7, 2022 | Cristina Laila
Posted on 7/7/2022, 3:17:38 PM

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg charged a bodega worker with murder when he clearly acted in self defense.

51-year-old Jose Alba stabbed his attacker several times in self-defense and now he’s at Rikers Island jail facing a murder charge.

Alba fatally stabbed Austin Simon, 35, a career criminal who violently attacked him behind the counter last Friday night.

According to reports, Austin Simon’s girlfriend got into an argument with Alba after her EBT card was declined when she tried to purchase a bag of chips.

The disgruntled woman then left the bodega, ran home and returned with her boyfriend – and that’s when the confrontation escalated.

According to Alba’s defense lawyer, the 32-year-old woman took a knife out of her purse and stabbed the bodega worker in the shoulder, the New York Post reported.

She is not facing charges for stabbing Jose Alba – But Jose Alba is facing a second-degree murder charge for fatally stabbing Austin Simon – AFTER the assailants stabbed him and violently attacked him.

Alba’s family says he was in fear for his life and acted in self-defense.

Video at https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1545074624127729665

The New York Post reported:

A hard-working Manhattan bodega clerk who was forced to grab a knife to fend off a violent ex-con, now finds himself sitting behind bars at the notorious Rikers Island jail charged with murder and unable to post $250,000 bail.

The sky-high bail for Jose Alba — who has no known criminal history — was just half of what controversial Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office demanded, despite surveillance video showing the clerk being assaulted by his alleged victim in the bodega.

Alba, 51, was charged with the fatal stabbing of Austin Simon, 35, who can be seen storming behind the counter at the Hamilton Heights Grocery on Broadway and West 139th Street to attack the store worker Friday night.

“It was either him or the guy at the moment,” Alba’s daughter Yulissa told The Post Wednesday, saying it was a case of self-defense.

“He’s never hurt anybody. He’s never had an altercation where he had to defend himself. This is the first time for him.”
