Director James Cameron on course to break the $1bn barrier for the second time

In less than two weeks, the ground-breaking 3D film has grossed $745m (£460m) and is already expected to be the most successful movie of 2009-10, overtaking even the latest Harry Potter film. And on New Year's Eve it was given the presidential seal of approval when the Obama family ventured into a shopping mall in Hawaii to watch the movie.

Should it continue its money-making progress at its current rate, the film could become just the fifth in history to gross more than $1bn. The biggest money-spinning movie of all time is Titanic, which made $1.8bn.

Breaking the $1bn barrier would be a particularly remarkable achievement for James Cameron, Avatar's director, seeing as he also directed Titanic. He would be the first film director to gross $1bn twice.

I thought it was pretty damn good. Then again, I don't go into blockbuster movies expecting Casablanca.

Excellent movie... I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It appeals to such a broad audience, I won't be surprised if it eclipses Titanic.

I am sure the film is good but anybody else notice that every year the box office record seems to get broken?

I dont think its the best way to evaluate a film.

Off topic---I once got a hold of Cameron Crow's personal email address and asked him(from a school computer) when he was going to come out and tell everyone that he has been a CIA shill(agent) ever since he was a teenager working for Rolling Stone(when he was infiltrated)...

He said I wasn't the first one to put "that" puzzle together but he assured me that it was not true...However after the words not true, he put a :)...

Well there is a strong conspiracy that "they" are going all out to cross breed all white people and make a race of brown people...All the while "they" at the top keep their bloodlines in tact...

You're quite the whiny c*nt. Must be pretty miserable in real life.

Movie had nothing to do with the white man.

He's probably referring to the anti-colonialist motif of the movie.

Anti-colonialist and anti-white are two different concepts. There's nothing that jumped out as "anti-white" in the movie.

Cameron doesn't make good movies anymore. Last time he did it was 1984. He makes movies that make money.

Oh, sure there was. The colonialist/military vs. blue people was a none-too-veiled Imperialist vs. Native Peoples. Pretty ham-handed. That and the idea that these blue people have a great 'spiritual' connection to the land that the Imperialists would be wise to heed (a timely nod of the head to the Green movement). Maybe, I'm getting cranky in my old age but I just want escapism when I see a movie. I don't like to be lectured, especially with some sociology 101 stuff.

How is that anti-white? None of that jumps out and screams 'anti-white'. Anti-imperialism, sure. Anti-white? No. I'm guessing most people will see it as more of an environmental movie than anything.

Methinks you're looking too much into a blockbuster movie. Either way, Cameron stole the whole movie from a novella written in the 50s.

I would not call it a turd, but definitely disappointing. It's funny how people will just go watch something cause it's hyped. Same shit every time.
