I remember years ago before The Rock really got famous he did a candid interview where he talked about living in a 1 bedroom apartment with his mom, living on bologna sandwiches day in and day out.

In college he said he couldn't afford a mattress so he found one in a dumpster and slept on it.  He didn't have enough money to live on so he ate macaroni and cheese every day.

The guy is a great success story.

Considering that I was very fortunate growing up and never really had to struggle...  I love reading stories like that, very interesting to see the other side of the coin and to see where people came from... makes me appreciate what my family was able to give me as they raised me.

Don't buy his bullshit.  His dad was a wrestler and must have made some decent money.  He went to the University of Miami which is a private school and very expensive.  He probably got a scholarship to go there.  Just check out how much tuition is there.  Outrageous.

Ya they all have these stories. Its like they think they get extra credit for coming from nothing. When in reality they got there through connections.

His dad was a wrestler. But I bet he'll tell you his dad had nothing to do with him becoming a wrestler  ::)

The one that bothers me the most is the Bill Gates Story.  Oh he didn't go to highschool and made genious business decisions.  BULLSHIT!!! His mom was a power player in the tech industry.  She sat on the board of IBM and a couple other companies.  She made all of the decisions for her son.  But they forget to tell you this shit.

Wasnt really attracted to her at first, but the fact that she became successful coming from nothing I was so impressed I found her irresistible. I stuck with her for 2 months

Everyone claiming The Rock came from money:

You don't know the whole story about Rocky Johnson his father, or his mother, or how he got into the University of Miami.

His father is a well documented ASSHOLE, who fucked over everyone he was ever involved with including Dwayne's mom.  He wasn't there when Dwayne was growing up and didn't help support Dwayne.

His mom worked for a small wrestling organization in Hawaii, and she struggled.

Dwayne went to the U on a scholarship, and struggled to feed himself while there.

It was Pat Patterson, who was good friends with Dwayne's dead grandfather Peter Miavia, who gave Dwayne a shot in the WWF.  Dwayne was fortunate enough to have the skill and athletic ability to earn a spot on the roster.

In 1995, I had a personal driver, a full time cook, a bodyguard that was six times my size and to top it I had two months paid vacation every year.  Now in my 25th year. I'm stuck walking everywhere, can't afford food, and I struggle to find a bed that will fit my size, dammit how things have changed :'(

BWAHAHAHA.  Bullshit, scholarship athletes have no issues eating.  The school provides the football players plenty of food.  They all get cafeteria passes with unlimited access to all food.  They all have coaches and Personal Trainers and dieticians.  College football is a multi billion dollar industry and colleges makes millions and millions and make sure their players are up to par.  Miami especially took care of it's athletes in many legal and illegal ways.

I don't know what it's like nowadays, but in the 80's and 90's student athletes didn't get shit.

1980s: Luther Campbell's "pay for play"
2 Live Crew member Luther Campbell was alleged to have been behind what was referred to as a "pay-for-play" system, which involved cash rewards for acts such as scoring touchdowns and big hits,[135] although Campbell has never actually donated to the University of Miami or its athletics department.

He was playing players because they barely had enough money to eat.  350 lbs men can't live on 3 normal sized meals per day.

Nope.....almost every D1 football program has "training table" for the players. All you can eat, special food, nutritionists, special diets, supplements, etc.

Even donald trump was broke in the nineties. Don't mean he wasn't connected. The rock dad may have been an asshole, but he was close to his samoan side. His maternal grandfather was a wrestler, his cousins yokazuna, and rikishi were also wwf superstars. The rock had all the inn's with the wwf.

direct from wiki
Along with his father and grandfather, several members of Johnson's family are current and former professional wrestlers, including his uncles, the Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika Anoa'i) and cousins, such as Manu, Yokozuna, Rikishi, Rosey, and Umaga.[19] When he declared his intention to join the family business, his father resisted, but agreed to train his son himself, warning him that he would not go easy on him.[18] With help from veteran wrestler Pat Patterson, Johnson had several tryout matches with the WWF in 1996; he defeated The Brooklyn Brawler at a house show under his real name, Dwayne Johnson,[24] and lost the others to Chris Candido and Owen Hart.[19] Impressed by his talent and charisma, Johnson was signed to a contract after wrestling at Jerry Lawler's United States Wrestling Association, where he wrestled under the ring name "Flex Kavana".[5] While there, he won the USWA World Tag Team Championship twice with Bart Sawyer in the summer of 1996.

The NCAA officially adopted rules and regulations on "Training Table Meals" in 1991. The practice dates back to the early 1900's at schools like Yale. If you don't think college football was big 20 years ago, you're sorely mistaken.

Didn't say it wasn't big.  Said it has grown like crazy since then, specifically money wise.  In 1991, the SEC divided up 20.6 million in rev.  In 2010, that number was 220 million.

LOLOLOL SO TRUE.  COLLEGE ATHLETES ARE SOME OF THE MOST PAMPERED AMERICANS, especially when their treatment is compared with their worth as human beings.  The dining halls and facilities, the pharma grade hormones and steroid cocktail injected by sycophantic overzealous assistants.  All for free

I'm pretty sure he had a bad injury in college and dropped out shortly thereafter. He's probably talking about the time in between leaving college with no job skills and the WWE.

And just because he ate good as a scholarship athlete at Miami doesn't mean he had money in his pocket. Hell, look at the fab 5 at Michigan, they generated millions for the university and besides possible kickbacks to Chris Webber, they were all pretty much just a bunch of broke teenagers.

Your nut hugging for the guy is sickening.

Hes talking about when he played for a team in canada right after college.  Was only earning $200 a week.  A year after that, he started wrestling.

Don't buy his bullshit.  His dad was a wrestler and must have made some decent money.  He went to the University of Miami which is a private school and very expensive.  He probably got a scholarship to go there.  Just check out how much tuition is there.  Outrageous.

I forgot about that, great point.  Though his dad, "Rocky Miavia", right?  Didn't make the kind of money you'd think a pro wrestler would make, nothing comparable to today at least.  I'm pretty sure he got into U of M playin' ball.

the rock is extremely talented, but you can't deny that he had an easier road to fame

he didn't need money in college, everything is paid for scholarship athletes

i read his book, he had no idea what to do with his life when football didn't work out, his father was close with pat patterson (vince mcmahon's right hand man) and he got him a private wrestling try out while guys like mick foley had to wrestle in high school gyms in front of 100 people and sleeping in his car hoping to be noticed

like i said as far as a wrestling character goes he was as good as anybody, but does he make it there without his connections?

players at oklahoma like billy simms had apartments, corvettes, etc, etc, etc.  you really think a booster back in the day wasn't hooking mr walker up.  even reggie bush was living the ronaldinho lifestyle at usc, and his heir joe mcknight was driving a hummer h2.

Does he even try wrestling at all without growing up with a wrestling dad?  Chances are he'd move out to LA to get a job as an actor and at that time anyone not white and not named Denzel would be relegated to thugs roles or possibly even porn if he was hung.

So you're hating on him for saying that he was poor?

Ever thought about that it is a figure of speech and that even with a stipend and all, he had to make it from the bottom to where he is now, as opposed to people who were born into a casino empire family?

I won't even get into the boosters at the University of Miami. There are supposedly a couple of mega millionaires who grow up absolutely loving WWF wrestling. So having Dwayne(whos father was a mega known Wrestle) on the team would have been something for some of the boosters... The Rock was taken care of since jumpstreet.

Every post you have made in this thread is 100% accurate.  I will be sure to look for more of your posts my good man.

Qft. I doubt seriously he had a problem at UM playing football. Miami was dominating at that time and I'm sure the money was flowin from wealthy alums to players. I went to college with a bunch of 'poor' football players. They all might have grew up poor but they had weren't poor playing football there- nice apartments, clothes, escalades, motorcycles, etc. I lived in an apartment close to half of them.

And what happens to them if they don't make the NFL?

They're only in college for three or four years. If they don't get that big money in the National Football League, what do you think happens to them?

Everyone claiming The Rock came from money:
Dwayne went to the U on a scholarship, and struggled to feed himself while there.

At one of the top pay-to-play universities, LOL. I'll buy he didn't have a booster giving him envelopes like Michael Irvine but he wasn't starving with a special cafe pass for football players. Maybe he didn't have extra money for late-night snacks and large pizzas.
