One valid theory of bodybuilding exercise? A valid theory could be construed as a fact. If there is only one valid way to train you better not have examples of those who train differently from what you say who are successful.
I like Mike Mentzer. I still have just about every magazine article he wrote. He was someone who I copied his routines from for many years. I do have to admit he is a flawed individual as we all are in his sometimes insane rantings. Double blind studies considering if multiple sets are better than one set have been done but so many factors are beyond control such as motivation, experience, survey size and genetic athletic potential.
Many volume trainers do train to failure. Just that one to four sets are getting progressively harder as fatigue sets in and the last 5th set is failure. Getting stronger means different things. Is getting stronger a one rep value? Is getting stronger using an X amount of weight for 5 sets of 12 reps under a certain time frame also getting stronger? Both can be a goal but which is best for building muscle?
The fact remains and it's not a theory is that the majority of successful bodybuilders have used volume. Another fact is that all successful bodybuilders used by Arthur Jones to promote his machines and training principles were successful champions prior to his machines. One glaring example is Sergio Oliva who visited for a very short time to train on Nautilus who is used as a Nautilus success story. He used conventional equipment mainly prior to his visit and after his visit with plenty of volume.

right or wrong he had personality and was an intelligent thinker and not just a mindless follower. nothing like the dumb bunch of drugged up meatheads you see today. these bodybuilders today even needs nutritionists and drug gurus to tell them what to take every day and they do it without question.

It seems Ben Pakulski isn't averse to being a drug guru and making a bit of dough himself.

HAUSE: What do you fear the most?
MENTZER: That anabolic steroids may have somehow altered my personality. Many people fear that taking steroids will adversely affect them physically. I’m more concerned about the way they might have affected me psychologically or my personality. Scares me to death!
-
Steroids turned Mentzer into a monster.
-
for me Mike is Mr.O 1980
I agree!

MENTZER LOOKS AWESOME!

^^
Mike making Zane look like a ballerina... :D
Zane looks way better than Mentzer in that picture.
-
While steroids I believe definitely do effect you psychologically it was the amphetamines that Mike admitted to using made him a wreck. Taking steroids makes you feel confident, aggressive and gives you a feeling of well being. When coming off completely you feel timid, nervous and depressed. Combine that with his amphetamine drug addiction makes for a sick individual.

One of the all time best pictures of Mentzer, for the late 1970s this was as good as it got in this type of shot 8)

Another great causal picture in the gym, Very thick ruggered physique back in the day

Does anyone have that Night of Champions review he did for Ironman where he called Gunter Hitlers dream come true or something like that? Only article for him that escapes me. Could've been Musclemag...

that's Reid Schindle in the middle. from Winnipeg Canada. Ben Weider stated Reid had better genetics than Arnold. squandered his potential. mind you at the time Canadians could only turn pro at the universe. and between usa and europe, chances are they would never give it to him

always liked Reid's physique. Torso was absolutely similar to Arnold's and could have been huge.

Guy is a rascal too!
A four-time Mr. Canada winner is again facing charges for marijuana production and trafficking, this time in connection with what police are calling a "sophisticated," million-dollar grow-op.
Garry Reid Schindle, 62, and Devron Theodore Lee, 36, were arrested Thursday morning after police executed a search warrant in the 500 block of Madison Street, a mostly commercial street near Polo Park mall. Police seized more than $1-million worth of marijuana plants.
Beginning in 1978, Reid Schindle won the Mr. Canada body building contest four years running. He also competed in the Mr. Universe competition, placing second in 1980.
Family confirmed Saturday Reid Schindle's first name is Garry.
The bust happened following a lengthy joint investigation between the province's Safe Neighbourhoods initiative and Winnipeg police. Inside the Madison Street building, officers found a pot-growing operation with $65,000 of equipment.
They also seized eight one-pound bags of marijuana, which are worth $20,000 on the street, and 987 marijuana plants. The plants are worth $1,105,440 on the street, police said.
In 1998, Schindle was charged with marijuana production and trafficking after Steinbach RCMP found more than 5,000 pot plants and hydroponic equipment inside a farm building on Schindle's property west of Blumenort.
At the time, RCMP called it one of the largest grow-ops ever uncovered in Manitoba.
Charges, however, were stayed amid concerns the RCMP improperly searched Schindle's farm.
Acting on a tip about an outdoor grow operation at the farm, officers on more than one occasion searched Schindle's property without first obtaining a search warrant, according to Free Press reports.
Schindle's lawyer in that case, Sheldon Pinx, could not be reached Saturday evening.
Schindle and Lee have been charged with producing marijuana and possessing it for the purpose of trafficking. They were released on a promise to appear.

I feel like mike regressed after 1978 in the legs and pecs.
Although there are few pics around of his early 1979 shows where he won one of them.

He started doing aerobics-cardio prior to the 79 Olympia. He was not into them before, but realized he was too out of shape and wouldn't get there without the additional activity.
