Got in a discussion with a friend on this today and I agree that he did the right thing. Friend argued a terrible violation of protocol. I argued f.. protocol: when a family is grieving, comfort is the most important aspect. The presence of Trump would have been disruptive emotionally. And if Barbara herself had been asked a week ago whether she would want him there, guarantee it would have been an emphatic NO.

Bush didn't attend Lady Bird Johnson's funeral.
President Carter did not attend the funeral of Mamie Eisenhower.
