Title: Johny Falcon and other craftsmen, how can I fix my ceiling?
Post by: anabolichalo on January 29, 2013, 10:58:10 AM
the previous owners for some reason removed this plaster beam thing in the corner of the ceiling

now it looks all fucked with 3 sides of the ceiling having the beam thing and on one side it's ripped off and the ceiling paper is even coming off because of this

what would you advise?

Looks like the coving was removed to fit those blinds, it would be a simple job of fitting a new length but prob cant because of the position of those blinds.

but where do you buy these type of beams that will match the other ones?

is this stuff hand made or how does all this work?

the person that destroyed this to hang a few shitty blinds is an absolute moron

Could you replace the crown molding in the entire room so it all matches?

Depends on the age, if its fairly modern d.i.y stores sell them in lengths and some are even pre mitred at the corners, older styles normally have to be custom made, you can take a length to a company than produces plaster mouldings and they will duplicate it for you.
They are just "glued" in place with adheasive.

i guess i will look around in "do it your self" stores to see if they sell these things

how would you go about removing the other ones (to replace everything for matching) without destroying your ceiling?

1.  Remove shitty blinds.
2.  Remove the other crown moulding.
3.  Buy new crown moulding.
4.  Install new crown moulding.
5.  Caulk.
6.  Paint.

HTH.

i would say you remove a 2 foot section of one of the remaining moldings and take it to the hardware store and see if you can match it up

you can reinstall it and use wood filler to make it look like new again

Unless the shit is really really old, you can match it up at a hardware store

when you cut it flip it upside down and cut your angle and dont lay it flat on the saw, it has to be set on the saw at 45deg angle

a couple of angles of what you want to show could be a help

are you asking how to put up a baseboard/crown molding to fill in the missing peice?

looks like a very simple job , you might even find studs behined the dry wall to screw a new baseboard to fit

you might be at a loss trying to match the pattern but home depot has a few patterns,  but you can either glue it with liquid nails caulking or like i said if you can find some studs to screw it in do that instead

if you use screws you want to counter-sink the baseboard and drill a hole through the baseboard first if your paranoid about splitting the baseboard with a screw, but do countersink  so when you screw it in the screw itself doesnt split the wood and the head of the screw wont stand out like a sore thumb

you could also nail it in with a long skinny nail but i think screws are easier

Find a matching Crown Moulding that was removed and install.  Very easy.

I have been cutting down trees all day and evening out/grading the soil around the Milk House.  I found one artifact today, an piece of an old railroad track buried about 9 inches deep.  I cleaned it off and it dates to around 1863 or so and is a piece of the old Richmond and Danville Railroad line.  Pretty cool find!

Yah, it doesn`t look to be anything special.  He could also just take all of them off -leave them off and make up for it by putting larger baseboards which would add height to the room.  I don`t know how tall his ceilings are, but I think that is a good option to consider.

Its just a little building that sits lower in elevation and is made out of stone and has a stone floor.  Some have water running under it from old Ice Houses or little streams.  They were used to keep dairy products cool before electricity.  Pretty Efficient.  Thomas Jefferson used to keep Ice Cream in his along with Milk.

still unable to fix this

i went around to home depots like shops

but the things they have to glue on the ceiling are way smaller than what i have

and i just dont understand how it was before it was removed

from the looks of it there was a space between the thing and the wall

and normally it's supposed to be between ceiling and wall

seemed to be like it was between ceiling and mid-air? (just connected on the side walls

wtf

this is really giving me a headache

take the other molding down then repaint the ceiling=easiest fix

or painstakingly put something decorative but big enough to fit up there...who ever had something up there before FAILED at doing so because its not up there any more

in your situation i think the celing would look better if it was the same color as the walls

Put a valence up across the top of the blinds. Butt the crown moulding up to the valence. Do it right just don't put crown across the blinds.

That does kinda look like a cluster...  Like Johnny said, take it down and paint the ceiling (white, not that brick color).   Then either replace the crown molding since you can't find something to match (maybe check online), or just paint the walls an ceiling and forget about replacement.  Consider adding texture to the ceiling to hide all the imperfections and/or maybe do a knock down texture on the walls.

Use a box cutter and score the top and bottom seam of the moulding.  Run it down the entire length all the way around the room.  This will cut through the excess paint and caulk.  Next, and Falcones said, use a flat pry bar, or wonderbar and hammer to pry it away from the wall.  Make sure you use a wood shim, so you don't tear up the sheetrock.  Take your time and work from the bottom and top.  (that's what she said)  ;D

Drill a hole and find the strongest beam, hang a rope with noose at the end over beam, tie rope very tight.let noose hang so your feet don't touch the ground, stand on chair, put noose around neck, step off the chair and kick it out of the way.

im a plasterer from uk....the coving has been cut back more than needed or the person doing the job has attempted to put coving up along that window wall, but only attaching it to the ceiling......and then maybe having their blinds running (hidden ) behind the coving

taking the rest of the coving down will most likely damage the ceiling and walls and if the ceiling and walls are papered then the damage will be greater.

strip all paper and coving and full skim will do the trick ;-)
