My guess is most people are "just joking".

There are a few who seem to be are 'posting in character', LOL! Feeling really safe from behind the keyboard makes it easier to push things further. When this happens, things get taken too far because people have no sense of accountability. It's the internet so no one really expects an in-person intervention when they go too far. All they really crave is attention so ignoring them is the only solution.

Mature people who have something going on in their lives have too much to lose by "fighting" in real life - possible lawsuit, loss of career, etc. Streetfights are for lowlives.
