ISIS Victory in Kobani Could Result in Civilian Massacre, UN Warns Oct 10, 2014 By ALI WEINBERG

Seven hundred civilians in Kobani, the Kurdish region along the Syria-Turkey border, are at risk of being massacred if more is not done to save the town from the army of radicals known as ISIS, according to the United Nations’ special envoy to Syria.

The envoy, Steffan de Misura, likened the threat to Kobani to the genocidal killing in Srebrenica, the 1995 massacre of 8,000 Bosnians by a Serbian paramilitary unit.

More than 200,000 Kurds have fled Kobani and nearby villages during the three week battle for the city, and in recent days Kurdish fighters have tried to evacuate remaining civilians as ISIS forces have entered the city and are slowly advancing despite U.S. air strikes and house-to-house fighting.

The U.N. estimated today that 700 civilians remain in the city along with Kurdish fighters.

The U.S. State Department said this week that there are a “low” number of civilians in and around Kobani who would be in danger if the city fell to ISIS.

What a mess

Don't let reality get in the way of the bullshit about how Obama's "plans" are working so splendidly.

Anyone who doesn't think Obama is coasting until his term is over is fooling themselves.  He's just doing the bare minimum while he eagerly waits for it all to be someone else's problem.

Or he's pitting 2 groups against each other.
Two groups we'd like to see depleted/destroyed.

ISIS spends a year on the battlefield, not sneaking into USA as Duncan Hunter lied about.
Most males aged 15 to 45 in that region involved in gun battles for the next year.

A year from now, we drop a bomb on whoever wins.  And when we're back in the next war over there, in 5 or 10 or 15 years (and we all know it'll happen), there will be a shitload fewer bad guys to fight.

Of course, for this theory to work, we'd have to believe our leaders would want such a bad thing.  Probably not possible, right?  LOL

Lol.  Yeah, that's what he's doing.  Brilliant plan.

I don't know if that's what he's doing...  I believed that was our goal in Iraq, and I was vocal about it on getbig.

I think it makes perfect sense... you don't want to be fighting these people in 15 years, with technology advancing, etc.  So why not whittle down their numbers by letting rebels/govt forces kill each other for a few years?  And, that's exaclty what happened in Iraq... how many hundred thousand young men, capable of fighting us in a decade, were killed in their own civil war?

NOW, we have 2 groups that hate each other in Syria.  Once side is machine-gunning crowds of hippies.  the other is slashing heads off journalists.  And they want to kill each other.  UM, I'd say this one is a no-brainer lol... LET THEM FIGHT.  And the proof is in the pudding - that's exactly what we're doing there.  Letting them fight.

Yes, Graham and Mccain are so upset we don't have 200,000 forces in the middle to soak up the bullets.  But obama/generals are letting the 2 shithead groups waste each other.   Proof will be in the pudding, IF we let this go on for 18 to 36 months, then we scoot in and pwn the winner fast.  No ground forces yet, but 2 groups of bad guys are getting slaughtered.  No cost in $ or life to USA, and our two biggest enemies in the region are murdering each other.

I'll ask what I asked getbiggers last time, 5 years ago...
How many years of "letting 2 groups kill each other off will have to pass by, before you'll admit it may have been the US strategy all along?}
I asked it last time, and we saw it happen for years.  Nobody ever answered.  Makes perfect sense,  Logical too.

REPORT: ISIS Used Chemical Weapons Against Kurds In Syria

The Times Of Israel

Times of Israel, The Times Of Israel

kobaniREUTERS/Umit BektasSmoke rises from the Syrian town of Kobani after a war plane carried out an air strike, seen from near the Mursitpinar border crossing on the Turkish-Syrian border in the southeastern town of Suruc in Sanliurfa province October 7, 2014.

Kurdish health officials and activists in the besieged town of Kobane claim to possess evidence that Islamic State operatives have used chemical agents as a weapon on at least one occasion during clashes with Kurdish fighters along Syria’s northern border.

According to several reports, which were compiled by the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center’s Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center, the use of the toxins by the Islamic State took place on July 12 in the village of Avdiko, 10 days after the rogue Jihadi group launched an offensive on the Kobane enclave, near the Turkish border.

Nisan Ahmed, the health minister of the Kurdish authority in Kobane, said that in a number of photographs showing Kurdish fighters who had been killed during the battle in Avdiko, no visible wounds or external bleeding could be seen on the bodies, whereas severe burns and white spots were clearly visible.

Ahmed asserted that the (graphic) photos, which were later obtained and posted online by the Middle East Review of International Affairs journal, suggest the fighters had died as a result of exposure to chemical toxins.

While it still remains unclear whether chemical agents were actually used by the Islamic State, Israeli experts who examined the photographs said the wounds, which included severe peeling of the skin and heavy blistering, suggested the Kurdish fighters had been exposed to mustard gas, the GLORIA Center reported.

The experts added, however, that more data was needed to form a definitive conclusion.

In early July, shortly before the attack on Kobani, officials in Iraq reported that the Islamic State had taken control of a vast former chemical weapons facility northwest of Baghdad, where 2,500 chemical rockets filled with the deadly nerve agent sarin, or their remnants, were stored along with other chemical warfare agents.

Iraq’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mohamed Ali Alhakim, said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that “armed terrorist groups” entered the Muthanna site on June 11, detained officers and soldiers from the protection force guarding the facility and seized their weapons. The following morning, the project manager spotted the looting of some equipment through the camera surveillance system before the “terrorists” disabled it, he said.

Alhakim singled out the capture of Bunkers 13 and 41 in the sprawling complex 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad.

The UN, however, stressed that the bunkers were bombed during the first Gulf War in February 1991, which routed Iraq from Kuwait, and said the rockets were “partially destroyed or damaged.”

The UN added that the sarin munitions were “of poor quality” and “would largely be degraded after years of storage under the conditions existing there.”

It said the tabun-filled containers were all treated with a decontamination solution and likely no longer contain any agent, but “the residue of this decontamination would contain cyanides, which would still be a hazard.”

According to the report, Bunker 41 contained 2,000 empty 155-mm artillery shells contaminated with the chemical warfare agent mustard gas, 605 one-ton mustard containers with residues, and heavily contaminated construction material. It said the shells could contain mustard residues, which can’t be used for chemical warfare but “remain highly toxic.”

The Syrian Kurdish enclave of Kobani has been the scene of heavy fighting since late last month, with the better-armed Islamic State fighters determined to capture the border post.

The extremist group has carved out a vast swath of territory from northern Syria to the outskirts of Baghdad and imposed a harsh version of Islamic rule. The fighters have massacred hundreds of captured Iraqi and Syrian soldiers, terrorized religious minorities, and beheaded two American journalists and two British aid workers.

A US-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against militant targets in and around Kobani for more than two weeks, and the town’s fate has emerged as a major test of whether the air campaign can obstruct the advance of the extremists in Syria.

Adiv Sterman and AP contributed to this report.
