Title: Biggest supplement scam you were taken by...
Post by: rocco-x on January 18, 2017, 05:54:55 AM
I remember when the whole Cybergenics, dibencozide, EAS thing took the bodybuilding community by storm...

I was an avid reader of MuscleMedia 2000 back in the early 90's...I spent over $200 on the EAS "boxed kit" that had the supposed supplement of the future, vanadyl sulfate and HMB. Oh to go back in time and get my money back lol!

take your pick from:

1) twinlab MCT fuel orange flavor
2) Vandal sulphate
3) nettle root extract - forget who made it
4) Muscletech Acetabolan

Also lost my $200 to Cybergenics.  It had a training regimen and diet plan that was very very hard so it gave them an out if it "didn't work."  But it was a great learning experience also.  Learned a lot about micromanaging my food intake and it also opened my eyes big time that it was all scams.

I bought Myoplex / MetRx but it was probably better than what my dumb ass would have eaten at the time.

Dumbest thing I did was over eat constantly and not stay lean and in good cardio condition.

Maybe the original androstenedione back then. I totally would've gotten taken by the the old HMB/V2G/GKG, etc.... stack, but I was too poor to afford it all, so it was just protein and creatine for me the first couple of years. While I don't feel taken by it, the worst tasting supplement I ever tasted, original Phospagain in the tin can came out in that era. Jeez it was awful.

Not really as have always had the "everyone's trying to rip you off" mentality even when Young.
I got a free copy of Bill phillips sports supplement review and it was the first real info I had on bodybuilding back before Internet acess wasn't commonplace and hardly any newsagents sold the mags, and bought some creatine to try first, got the shits and no results and never bothered again.
Learned some basic info on how to train and eat from that book though as handnt a clue

After years of wasting a lot of money on supplements I can tell you that they are a waste of money they dont build muscle, spend your money on a healthy diet with nutrient dense foods like salmon, sweet potatoes, kale, berries, almonds etc, if you are not satisfied with your natural build after this then start out with 500mg of test to add more muscle then if you want to keep getting bigger just simply add more anabolics.

I was working part time at GNC as a grad student during the Cybergenics craze.
I actually trained in the same World gym as one of their main spokesman , Franco Santorello (sp?).
Had an 8x 10 autographed color pic of me with Franco S. in the gym.
It was kept on the GNC store counter , with a contest pic me of me winning some Mr Podunk.

Plenty of younger dudes came in to buy their Cybergenics kits from me.
I feel a twinge of guilt now, but, wtf, I bought/used the same crap myself at the time.
A few females bought it , but they bought mostly fat burners and ripped fuel.

It was a cool looking box with the fat calipers and routine booklets.
Of course it was overpriced, especially past the initial purchase.
Once you had the routine down , most of their supplements were nothing special.

I was paid an  hourly wage plus sales commission , so I feel a bit bad now, for pushing it so hard.

Cool story but GNC didn't pay Promotional Money, as they called it, for selling Cybergenics. You would have had to sell the GNC house brand Pro Performance bodybuilding kit to get the extra money.

It just blows my mind when the government claims that it doesn't have the money to regulate this industry.

Total bullshit.

But we have all known this for a long time.

When it comes to bodybuilding supplements, it really is caveat emptor.

yeah from about 94 all I'd buy was eas products especially hmb and creatine. I was so brainwashed if I had less than 2 bottles of grape juice in my fridge I'd freak out cause that's what they said you HAD to take the creatine with lmao!

I had the money for the top gear at that time but chose to go "natural"...but I did get hold of those oxitosonas from Syntex at times.

met-rx ads was 'slightly' exaggerated  :D

Out of all the bogus sups every created, MetRx was the first one with a mass ad campaign.  I would say it made the most money... more than Muscletech.  It was just simple milk protein and very expensive.

The ads were totally deceptive, but they were convincing and very well written.  I remember some of the BS claims very clearly...

Jeff Everson said:  "If it walks like a duck... it must be a duck".

Dr. Scott Connelly called MetRx: "Anti-catabolic" and he also said: "They feed it to burn patients".

Phillips said: "One of the ingredients costs $1500 a kilo".  That ingredient was ASPARTAME!  At that time it was still under patent and very expensive.  Bill made people believe it was some secret muscle building ingredient.

Shit like this is what made these guys a fortune.... and it was ALL nonsense.

I bought a few of these back in the day:

'the strongest Bulgarian Tribulus Terrestris in existence, with a 68% protodioscin level, the part that has shown to be anabolic and is responsible for increasing muscle size, Testosterone boosting and strength'

'subjects were shown to have gained 5lb in lean muscle and add 18lb to their bench press in just 6-10 weeks'

'ZMATM was used in 28 clinical studies and was proven to increase Testosterone by 43.7%, strength by 7% and IGF-1 by a whopping 25.1% over the placebo group!'

I'm saying I worked at GNC at the time he's referring to and the pay structure was an hourly wage plus "promotional money" for selling the house brands which were Challenge and Pro Performance. There was no monetary incentive to sell Cybergenics, the incentive was to switch customers onto GNC's brands which in that case was the Pro Performance bodybuilding kit, a Cybergenics knock off. Not saying he's lying. Possibly mistaken?

Depended on how the store was owned.
Corporate owned stores only gave sales commission  on the GNC house brands .
I got a straight 5% on everything I sold because I worked for a privately owned franchise in Ohio.

No, I didn't take drugs, but I took so many natural supps, I damn near rattled from all the pills.

Hard to think we actually lived like that then huh? ;D

Ok, I worked for a privately owned franchise in Ohio when I was a grad student.
After 90 days , I got paid an hourly wage plus the store owner gave me 5% for EVERY thing I sold.
I saw the actual wholesale prices and the GNC brand had much better profit margins.

Corporate owned franchises may have had a slightly different policy?

I agree and one more thing you forgot to add the reason why fart powders dont work is because when you fart you are farting out the air out of your muscles, if you hold back the farts then the air will stay in your muscles and you will get bigger.
