WrestleMania 35 Picks
« on: April 07, 2019, 12:50:09 PM »
I don't quite know all of the matches (or which ones will be on the pre-show). And, in all likelihood, I won't have time to watch 'Mania for 6-7 hours straight. But, here's a stab at my predictions.

Raw and Smackdown Women's Championships (winner-take-all): Ronda Rousey (c, Raw) vs. Charlotte Flair (c, Smackdown) vs. Becky Lynch. A predictable main event match, beating us over the head about women being in the main event. I don't think the women are ready for prime time yet. With that said, Lynch wins via scoring fall on Flair.

World Championship: "The New" Daniel Bryan (c) vs. Kofi Kingston. WWE has to stiff us in one of these title matches with sentimental favorites. If Lesnar or Rousey retain their respective titles, the crowd will riot. So, the safest bet is for Kingston to lose and Bryan to retain his gold.

Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Seth Rollins: Had Reigns not left due to leukemia, Lesnar wouldn't even be in the conversation of a main-event match. It's time for the Beast to go down. And I doubt we'll get swerved like last year. Rollins takes the gold (or the red).

Intercontinental Championship: Bobby Lashley (c) vs. "Demon King" Finn Balor - Too much production and too much fan support for Balor to lose. In fact, I don't think he's ever lost a match on the main roster in Demon mode. Balor is the new IC champ. And, if he stays as the Demon, he might break Honky's record.  ;D

United States Championship: Samoa Joe (c) vs. Rey Mysterio - Somebody has to retain a title around here. So, if Bryan doesn't keep the WWE championship, Joe will keep the US Strap.

Women's Tag Team Championships: Bayley and Sasha Banks (c) vs. Iiconics vs. Beth Phoenix and Natalya vs. Nia Jax and Tamina Snuka. This is a toss-up, but I think there will be new champs. I'm leaning towards LayCool 2.0 but I wouldn't be surprised is Phoenix and Natalya win it, in a tribute to Jim "the Anvil" Neidhart.

Smackdown Tag Team Championships: Usos (c) vs. The Bar vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Alexandar Rusev vs. Ricochet and Allister Black. They've been pushing Black and Ricochet beyond absurdity. I understand the tradition of the establishment guys jobbing to the dudes fresh from NXT for six months or so. But, PLEASE!!! With that said, I think the Usos keep the belts, as consolation for them (and everyone else) getting smashed by the Bludgeon Brothers last year.

Raw Tag Team Championships: The Revival (c) vs. Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins: I had to look this up online, because I don't remember this even being announced on Raw at all. This looks like another pre-show deal. I say the former Major Brothers/Edgeheads get the gold, given how weak WWE has made the Revival look. Plus, it gets Hawkins off the schnide and gives Ryder another WM moment, which should last more than 24 hours (i.e. his IC win at WM32 and loss to the Miz on Raw the next night).

Cruiserweight Championship: Buddy Murphy (c) vs. Tony Nese - As if I care. But, just to get out of the way, Murphy retains.

Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal (aka Men's participation trophy) - It only goes to the main show, because of those two SNL goofs. It's set up for Strowman. But, we might get a swerve, maybe a Jeff Hardy.

Women's Battle Royal (aka women's participation trophy) - This probably goes pre-show. Contrary to X-Pac's suggestion at the Hall of Fame, I don't think they'll name it after Chyna (I mean, if the corporate sponsors lost it after WWE tried to name the thing after Moolah last year, AIN'T NO WAY they're going to go for a battle royal named after the 9th wonder of the world, given her drug and porn issues). I think they should name it after Sensational Sherri, anyway. Word is that, they're giving this one to Asuka after basically knee-capping her and yanking the SD women's title away and giving it to Flair, to raise the stake of the main event match. But, for the mere sake of a push, they may FINALLY put Lacey Evans in the ring and let her debut with a win (ala Baron Corbin at WM32, or Fandango at WM29).

Is it me, or does having TEN TITLES at stake constitute overkill?

Here are the other matches, that don't involve belts or trophies.

Triple H vs. Batista (No Holds Barred, Helmsley's career on the line): As stated elsewhere, given the Game's injuries and the tradition of Flair, Michaels, and Undertaker, this looks like a THT move so Helmsley can retire. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if this is a political move just so the WWE COO can finally get a win over Batista on pay-per-view. But, I'll go with the Animal all the same.

Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin (Angle's Farewell Match): This, I think, goes against the grain. Angle will go out in style, as Corbin doesn't need to beat Angle for a push. Plus, based on the HOF crowd chants during the Warrior award.....

UPSET SPECIAL: Angle beats Corbin in a squash, only to get or give an open challenge....answered by JOHN CENA, who gets a win.

Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre: For the first time in FIVE YEARS, the Big Dog ain't closing out 'Mania and the fans are cheering for him. All it took was his leukemia returning. Reigns beats the Scottish Psychopath tonight, which leads to a major feud for the rest of the year and sent McIntyre on the path to the Big Red Belt, either at SummerSlam or Survivor Series (presumably against Rollins).

AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton: THIS has show-stealer written all over it, especially given what Styles and Shane-O-Mac did two years ago at 'Mania. The storyline couldn't be better: The ultimate indy grunt vs. the spoon-fed-3rd-generation darling. This is a toughie, but I think I'll go with Styles on this one. This has to end with something other than Orton, nailing another guy with a mid-air RKO.

The Miz vs. Shane McMahon (Falls Count Anywhere) : This is the first high-profile match for Miz since WM27, simply because he's against somebody with the last name, "McMahon". But, this is also a first for Miz as a babyface at 'Mania. He's getting love from the fans and I think a win over the human crash test dummy is just what he needs. Miz gets the win and avenges dear old dad.

SEVENTEEN MATCHES in total! This is virtually THREE PAY-PER-VIEWS in one. And it's way too long, which means some of these will be squashes (i.e. Sheamus beating Bryan in 18 seconds for the World title at WM28).

Nine title matches, two battle royals, two career-ending matches.........They need to trim the fat, as this has officially become PC-Mania (everyone gets to be on the show, women in the main-event, etc.).

Talk about swerve!! Universal title match FIRST? After Alexa Bliss opens with Hulk Hogan, Paul Heyman storms to the ring, proclaiming that Lesnar should be on last.  But since he’s not, he wants to get the match over and done so they can head to Vegas. Lesnar arrives first,  followed by Rollins with a cool sword graphic that says Beast Slayer.

Lesnar jumps Rollins before the match starts, throwing him through the table, the LED boards by the ring, the barricade, etc. Rollins’ back is riddled with bruises and sliced open. Once the match officially starts, Lesnar suplexes the Architect 4 times. Then, Heyman says to end it, Lesnar goes for the F-5, but Rollins slips out, pushes Lesnar into the ropes and the referee, knocking the ref out the ring. Then......WHAM!!

Crowd goes nuts when Rollins hits the Beast right in his nuts!!! Once floored Lesnar is primed to get kicked right in his Cro-Magnon head. Curb stomp 1....Curb stomp 2....Curb stomp 3......the ref makes the count....

ROLLINS WINS THE RED BELT!!

Orton and Styles: Not quite the barn burner for which I’d hoped. But a good match it was. Styles survived an RKO, hit two phenomenal forearms and got the win.

Now, it’s Smackdown tag titles.

Pre-show results:

New cruiserweight champion: Tony Nese.

New Raw tag champs: Hawkins and Ryder, with Hawkins scoring the fall and ending his drought.

ATG Memorial Battle Royal: Braun Strowman.

Women’s Battle Royal: Carmella.

The Bar stole the show, especially with Sheamus pounding Black’s chest 24 straight times, after ten strikes on arises, six on Nakamura and Five on one of the Usos....all while Ricochet got a Cesaro swing for a minute minute straight, to the crowd’s delight.

But the USOs hit the double splash and keep the belts.

Miz and Shane-O-Mac are up next.

As is tradition, Shane-O-Mac became the human crash test dummy. Shane climbed up to a TV camera scaffold, with Miz giving chase. Miz actually superplexed.....though you could call it....MEGA-PLEXED Shane off the scaffold to a bunch of tables with both lying motionless, as a result. But, Shane landed on top of Miz and the ref counted to three. Shane-O-Mac wins it.

Women's tag titles are up next....I am watching this on delay; so I know Mania is over at this point.

Beth Phoenix hits a SUPER Glam-Slam on Bayley, from the top turnbuckle. But, on the way down, Billie Kay tagged Phoenix on the booty. Peyton Royce pulled Phoenix off Bayley, allowing Kay to make the pin. New Women's tag champs, LayCool 2.0.

Usos are the only ones who've retained their titles so far.

WWE World title time....!!

KOFI-MANIA RUNS WILD!!! THE BEST MATCH of the night thus far. Kingston wins the WWE world title.

Next up, US title match.

Well, I knew we had to have a title squash match at some point. Joe just put Rey to sleep in about 5 minutes, after Rey hit the 619 and went for a splash off the top.

Now, it's Reigns and McIntyre. I hope this is a good one, because Smackdown has owned the joint thus far. NYPD bagpipe band is playing McIntyre to the ring and he looks awesome.

Mediocre match, Reigns looked good and the crowd was behind him. He hit the scream and the spear. 1-2-3. Reigns wins.

Elias nearly bores the fans to tears, when JOHN CENA shows up in his old Thuganomics gimmick. He hit Elias with the slam, the "you can't see me" thing, and the AA. The crowd actually liked it.

Batista arrives in a limo; Helmsley has a Mad Max dune buggy thing. Except for Batista taking a power bomb on the stairs with a pedigree immediately afterwards, this match was so-so. Flair helps the Game, who does a Reigns-style Superman punch with the sledgehammer, hits the pedigree again, and gets the win.

IC title time.

Lashley has green contacts and looks like a bald chocolate-covered Incredible Hulk. Balor’s Demon entrance was longer and better than ever. Balor got hot early but Lashley came back strong, including nailing Blair with a spear through their ropes that nearly killed the Demon.

Lashley hit another spear inside the ring for the win; but Balor survived. lashley missed another spear.  Valor tries a powerbomb but fails. He kicks Lashley 5 times and tries the lift the champ again but fails. Five more kicks and the Balor hits the powerbomb, immediately followed by the Coup de Grace. The Demon pins chocolate Hulk and gets the gold.

Had a great time last night watching it. Beer and BBQ watching it with my bulldogs. Far from the best WM. The Rollins/Brock match could have been so much better then using a low blow. AJ kicking out of the RKO was a low point for me as well. The Angle and Mysterio squashes were unnecessary. Too many title changes and Miz should have gone over. Didn't watch the HHH match. Gonna watch it all again tonight.

Trust me. You didn't miss much. Batista vs. Helmsley was hardly a classic. If anything, The Game should have lost and Angle should have won.

I noticed that you didn't mention the much-ballyhooed main event. I was about to do so. My wife, at the last minute, told me that some friends from Missouri were in town and booked us to visit them. So, I had to watch 'Mania in patches, based on Wi-Fi availability. I had wings and lemonade. No beer for me; I was driving!!  ;D

I was SHOCKED that the Universal title match was first. That only happens to Smackdown world title matches. The nut-shot to Lesnar was great, as payback for Lesnar jumping Rollins before the match. The crowd loved it; but did you see the bruises, the lacerations and welts on Rollins' back?

Lesnar was announced at 265 lbs, which is the maximum he can be for UFC fights but 20-30 lbs LIGHTER than Lesnar normally is. So, he must have a date with the octagon. As stated earlier, there was no way WWE was going to swerve us this time, as they did with Reigns last year.

As for the winner-take-all match. First, they have Charlotte Flair show up in a chopper, with a red carpet rolled out and man-servants taking her coat and fetching her robe, before she walks into MetLife Stadium.

Then, we get Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performing "Bad Reputation" live, as Ronda Rousey heads to the ring. Then, Flair heads to the ring with pyro out the wazoo. Finally, "The Man" shows up. The intros go, the match starts, and at first Rousey starts pounding everybody. For a while, Becky is taken out and it's Flair and Rousey. When Flair starts hitting chops, Rousey no-sells and yells, "You chop like a b---h". When they go outside, Rousey does her "Piper's Pit" Samoan drop on them, until Lynch shoves her into the post.

Then Flair and Lynch tried to use each other's finishers but fail. At one point, we get double power bombs, moonsault suplexes, and Flair stealing the Hart-figure-four-around-the-post moves to put it on Rousey.

Lynch gets her flurry and tries to use a table. Rousey counters, knocks the table down and yells, "Tables are for b----s". But, Flair set the table back up and bounced Rousey's head in it repeatedly.

One good spot was Rousey's armbar on both Flair and Lynch, only for her face to shutter in fear when Flair and Lynch double power bomb her THREE TIMES!!.

But, we get a controversial ending. Rousey goes for armbar to put Lynch away; but Lynch rolls her over. The ref counts one....Rousey lifts her shoulder off the mat; but Lynch wiggles to put her shoulder back down. The ref counts two and THREE!!

Lynch wins both belts and Rousey does her best Hogan '88 impression (after the double Hebner referee thing). We get a shocked Lynch, who gets handed both belts.

She walked away in shock; Flair is crying in disappointment; and Lynch is holding the belts with pyro blasting all around the stadium and elsewhere.

The Smackdown matches BLEW the Raw matches away, virtually across the board. And, as I figured the REAL MAIN EVENT was the WWE world title match. The crows dug it the whole time, even chanting "YES" when Kingston nailed Bryan with any succession of punches or kicks. The women did fairly well but they still ain't ready for prime time.

That was a clear message when Heyman said weighing 265. I just really didn't think Brock was going to loose. I don't think the low blow made Rollins look strong. Brock threw Rollins into the base of the ring and you could clearly hear Seth nailed his head on something that was underneath it. The ref kept asking him if he was ok and they even replayed it. Another chuck was into the German announcer. Seth hit his head hard on that guy. No doubt Brock is stiff. I just dont see why VKM didn't keep the belt on Brock and allow him to fight in the UFC. I think he's gonna walk through Cormier pretty easily and he'd be the champ of both promotions. Sounds like a solid sell to me? I fell asleep for the Womens match. Gonna watch it the whole show again tonight except for HHH/Batista. I dont know if HBK was involved but would be surprised if he wasn't. I bet anything HHH used that stupid sledge hammer. HHH/HBK vs Taker/Kane will be the last time I ever watch HHH talk or cut a promo. That dude is out of my like forever.

Check my post from earlier. HBK didn't interfere; Flair did.

As stated earlier, the fans have HAD IT with Lesnar. There would have been a full-scale riot (especially in NJ), if Lesnar retained the Universal title. I thought that, if we got stiffed on any of the world title matches, it would have been the WWE title match with Kingston and Bryan.

THAT WAS THE MAIN EVENT, as far as I'm concerned. Kofi with his kids was just too cute, but it was eerily similar to Benoit with his son at WM20.

Yes, the show dragged bad...6 hours is ridiculously too long. By far not the best WM, too many easy predictions. We all knew Kofi and Becky were winning so that stole from the ambiance.
Cena coming out as a heel Dr. of Thuganomics was the smart move. He'd of been booed out of NYC otherwise. Lot of botches and the main event was not as up to par as it should've been. Match ended prematurely when Ronda legitimately broke her hand thus having Becky cradle her for the win. The Universal Title match was put first because they wanted to start of WM on a high note and get the crowd happy from the start.

That makes sense. As I said, that usually happens with Smackdown’s world title just to get it out of the way. See WMs 27 and 28, especially 28, where Sheamus beat Daniel Bryan in 18 seconds. I thought Kofi MIGHT get stiffed, simply because three predictable world title changes was overkill.

NO WAY was Lesnar keeping the title, especially in New York and after we got stiffed last year. Rollins even won without the usual routine of running Lesnar into something metallic (i.e., the ring post, a chair, or th corner of a table).

It also made me question the Rumble angle about the winner main-eventing the showcase of the immortals in a world title match. This time they did it with the women’s Rumble winner. Last year, NEITHER Rumble winner headlined the show, despite having GREAT matches.

This time, after 5 years, we got a main event that didn’t involve Lesnar or Reigns. Maybe that was also a statement. I am surprised they let Lynch pin Rousey. And a roll-up works better anyway. It keeps Rousey looking strong, makes Lynch look as if she got lucky, and even has a hint of Hogan-Andre (‘87 & ‘88) to it with the “botched” three-count.

Did you see Raw last night? Taker/Elias segment was a teaser and Taker is in phenomenal shape muscle wise. Also Laars Sullivan finally made his debut attacking Angle after Angle interrupted Corbin. Very interesting...

So who's Heyman gonna advocate for now that Brock is gone? Loved his work with CM Punk, Ryback, and especially Curtis Axel. Women's division is already way over. Where would you apply the genius that is Paul Heyman? The mens division has never been more wide open ready for the next superstar then right now.

I did. But I’m not getting any hopes up with Undertaker. What was the point of all that mess at WM33?

Taker was supposed to hang it up then and do the THT for Reigns. That’s why I didn’t go. Had Angle beaten Corbin, Angle’s THT for Sullivan would have been much better.

Where would you apply the genius that is Paul Heyman? The mens division has never been more wide open ready for the next superstar then right now.

To answer your question, I’d go with McIntyre, who beat Rollins a few weeks back. It makes perfect sense. Give him a rematch with Reigns and have Heyman show up in a quest to have McIntyre destroy the two guys who took the red belt from Lesnar.

If they gave Jinder Mahal (McIntyre’s buddy from 3MB) the WWE world title, then certainly the Scottish Psychopath can be Universal Champion.

I think Taker is wrestling Elias at the Saudi Arabia show hence why he is in shape and apparently the king of Saudi Arabia is paying him big bucks to appear.

I like McIntyer but I do believe he hurt himself in last nights six man tag. He was visibly seen leaving the match three quarters of the way through. I hope he is ok. I would love to see him pushed.

Props to the women for main eventing WM. Watched the match three times now and it wasn't good. Timing was off and there were too many flubs. Bryan and Kofi was the last match I watched on Sunday before going to sleep and I walked away happy. Wouldn't have been the same If I stayed and watched the final match. Far from having the blow you away touch your heart WM main event feeling. I do believe VKM utilized Rousey to the maximum. The mixed tag last WM with the Rock. Bringing back the Rowdy tshirt and putting over Becky Lynch. Great crossover star. She did a great job.
