The smell of gas...
« on: April 18, 2009, 03:37:13 PM »
I spilled some gasoline in my car...I shampooed the carpet about 5x and could still smell it.

Anyone have any good suggestions other than having it detailed (which I might have to do)?

Have you tried burning it off?  :P

FYI STella:  The gasoline goes into the gas tank usually found on the outside of the car.

How did you spill gasoline in your car?   :o

It's a container for gas for my lawnmower!  I must have turned a corner too fast :-\

I bought some extra-strength Febreez (sp?) and sprayed it on the carpet a couple times...seems like only a cover-up though  :(

if i remember correctly from chemistry gasoline evaporates fairly rapidly, maybe leaving the windows down if possible out in the open not the garage. Im sure there will still be a tinge of smell but you could probably wash that out and if worse comes to worse a detail.

Oh STella...  next time, ...use the trunk.

Don't know what to suggest? You could always try Odor Free.

It worked for me to get out smoke smell when I had a few fires at my place.
I thought I was going to have to rip out carpet & replace drapes & upholstery. It worked wonderfully.

I've never heard anyone who has used it to removed gasoline odour, ...but I know our truckers love it to remove all sorts of odours from their cabs (which are basically homes on wheels for some of the long haul drivers) They live in their cabs 24/7

Odor free doesn't mask odours, it neutralizes them.

Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Hope That Helps  :)

I'm with this suggestion. Just make sure there is no body in the trunk when doing so!

If there is, ...make sure the area is real remote and the bon fire can't be seen from the highway.

I'm sure your dealer's detail department would have a suggestion, but air circulation and time are probably going to be the best thing.

What about charcoal  ??? or baking soda  ??? hmmmm

Thanks for the additional suggestions everyone.  I didn't drive it yesterday so we'll see if it still reeks today.

Febreeze is good, but like you mentioned, it's probably acting as a masking agent.
It's also keeping the spot damp.
Shampooing is good also, but even "clean" dampness, prolonged, can lead to a musty smell that may invite mold.

See if you can pull the upholstery back some (off of the floor).
Place something under the fabric to hold it up.

Zap the area with a blow drier for several minutes.
If you can, fixing a fan on the area for 30-60 min would be even better.
Try either of both of these remedies even if you can't peel back the carpet.
Good luck.
Gas fumes - whether petroleum or human-based - is a nasty culprit.

Thanks Montague.  I am hesitant to try to pull up the carpet because the car is pretty new.  I will try the fan if it still stinks, thanks :)
