Title: Tilapia and the dirt flavor
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on March 25, 2014, 08:54:14 AM
I'm not sure what it is about Tilapia but no matter where I get it, fresh or frozen, there is a slight "dirt" taste to it.  I can't pinpoint what it is but it seems unique to it.  Anyone else experience this?

I decided to google it and there are dozens of sites with people saying the same thing like the quote below

". I used to avoid eating it because it always tasted a bit like dirt to me. This was before tilapia farming became really big in the US and the tilapia was imported from somewhere in Asia. The dirt taste isn't really strong for some people but I really noticed it"

I don't get the dirt taste but can't stand the odor.

Bodybuilders seemed to support this fish but it's more of a Nebrew fish.

Yes true. Bodybuilding Hebrews tend to go toward the Tilapia because it's cheap and it's a stinky fish...

The dirt taste comes from its farmed, unnatural diet.

If you compare Tilapia and Orange Roughy, what fish promotes the best discharges? (of peace)

Tilapia is not oily like Orange Roughy.  tilapia in most cases ends up pretty dry when cooked.  Yeah, I've heard stories of clear oil squirts doing squats from bodybuilders that ate a lot of Orange Roughy

Tilapia has a dirt flavor because its farmed raised in China. A lot of it comes from China. Best tilapia is from the U.S  or Costa Rica

Could you say that both the Tilapia and the Orange Roughy are Poop Fishes?

If it's coming out of Asia, it lived on pig and chicken manure and raw sewage.

Try some salmon instead.  The flavor blows away Tilapia and most other fish IMO.

That's some weird kind of animal.

I suppose if you fried it up, wrapped it in bacon, and gave me a combo with a beer and some fries, I'd try it.

Alfredo sauce and Tilapia goes incredibly well together.   If you find plain Tilapia bland, pour a little bit of low fat Alfredo Sauce over top, it makes it 100% better.

Smoked eel as a delicacy but only very infrequently. (A critically endangered, fascinating species - don't overconsume it like the Japanese!)

Other than that, wild salmon but it's very expensive. Be wary of any of that farmed fish, I've heard and seen first hand some of the ethical and feculent practices involved in fish farming.

Mackerel and herring are best - dirt cheap but because it's so common in the wild you are certain to be getting actual good quality wild fish, not some mutant fed on chemicals and hormones.

Or alternatively, buy a rod and go casting! Give a GetBigger a fish and they will have meal one of six sorted for the day; teach a GetBigger to fish and they will have their entire 16 week pre-contest diet sorted.

buy American\wild caught, it's one of the most sustainable fishes around. even american organic gmo free whole foods Tilapia should run less than 6.00 per lb

Fuck eating fish! Stick to chicken and some beef. That orange roughy fish will make you have wet-ass. You ever see the competitors limping around? It's not because their hurt it's because they have a discharge of oil and shit  from their ass from the orange roughy.

Dirt has many flavours. If i go wheeling in the rocks i get a certain flavor of dust in my mouth, if i go to sand dunes the flavour of the dirt is completely diferent.
During a vacation in Canary islands the volcanic/sulfur rocks dirt taste was proeminent.
So please, be specific about what kind of dirt are we talking about.

It's because it's raised in filth in a man made pool of salt water in Asia. The water is just disgusting. Only eat wild caught fish. Do you think they have health inspectors in these countries? I bet they sell even the fish that die in that filth of a swimming pool. Tilapia isn't even a species of fish. Just a generic term for group of fish.

Don't copy and paste a snopes view. That husband and wife team are not the last word on truth. They are just dopes sitting in their living room with what essentially is a blog.

Which would amount to about 1/4 of the calories he needs to maintain his 300lb off-season size. Not buying it.
