to be honest, you've really got to have to be very very good at at least one discipline to be successful in the business.
imo it is going to take a lot more than a year to become good at striking which basically means boxing skills. you must be either very good with your hands or extremely good on the ground/ shoot before seriously considering it. kicks, knees are important but nowhere near as important as hand skills (including gnp and elbows).
a very important factor is experience. how many quality fights have you had? what do you do when you get hit? do you remain calm when hit, taken down, locked up, etc.
first move would be to attend classes with those that actually compete and spar with them as much as possible. time is of the essence.
