Title: Stevan Segal - accomplished martial arts expert!
Post by: Radical Plato on June 05, 2010, 11:51:55 PM
I am just reading the National paper online (The Herald Sun - Australia) and there is a story about Stevan Segal, the actor wanting to become an honorary member of Costa Rica's Police force.  Anyway, they described him as a martial arts expert! Can anyone confirm if and at what martial art he is a supposed expert, I just assumed he was another B Grade actor, plus the guy never looks in shape, he always looks like he just finished a bucket of KFC.  How would he go in the UFC?

Yeah, he does have a pretty toady looking body, but at least he has got a fierce and menacing stare about him :>

First of all, you must be an idiot, because your friend google knows everything about this guy. Secondly, there isn't any way to prove that he is martial arts expert, because facts doesn't mean anything to you guys. That's why there really isn't any answer to your question, so let say he was is an actor/director/producer of his own movies. His best role by far is the "cock puncher" from the "Onion movie", and by that he has proven at lest for me that he isn't so serious guy after all.

If the word "Aikido" tells you anything, he is a first non Japanese who has his own martial arts school in japan. He has 7th dan black belt in aikido, which is a martial art where you don't get those belts for Christmas gifts, but you must accomplish certain level to get it, so it takes years to make the second dan black belt and few decades to get the 7th dan. Highest today is 10th dan from the scale of 12.

From the aikodo faq:
Is Steven Seagal really an Aikidoka? What is his rank?
Steven Seagal really is an Aikido instructor (or was, until his movie career got in the way). He has a rank of seventh dan (Aikikai) and has run his own dojo in both Japan and the United States. Most of what you see in the movies, however, is not Aikido as it is practised in the dojo. Some argue that it is not Aikido at all.
His Aikido is for real. Here's what Wendy Palmer had to say in "Aikido in America":

He has great throws. Very energetic, very fast, very powerful. He would throw me -- bam! -- I'd hit the mat; the spit would fly out of my mouth, that kind of thing, just really powerful. [...] He had very good Aikido. He really did. He threw me very energetically. At that time he was not particularly muscled. He was strong, aiki-strong, but he didn't have a kind of gym-muscle body at all. This throws were very fast, very energetic. You never knew what happened. He could do that art.

He is too busy harassing his maids to bother with the UFC.  Maybe when he's done with that he can fight Kimbo.

And when has he ever been in a real fight?  Him and his entire persona of being a bad ass is complete bullshit.  He's  a very accomplished martial artists............but that translates to fuck all as far as being able to fight or being an accomplished fighter.  Martial arts is just that.........an art..........overall even though many martial arts are rooted in ancient fighting today they have fuck all to do with two menacing gang bangers wanting to bash your skull in with a tire iron or stab you to death with a knife for your wallet.  Fighting and street self defense are two different beasts as well.........but they are far removed from "martial arts".  If you want art go buy a fucking brush and paint a picasso.

And when you have been? When bullies kick your ass in the school yard and you run home crying? He is annoying guy but so are you, so what is the difference. He has famous and fortune which you will never get, he is something and you are nothing. In real world he is better of than you are, in your imaginary world he is pussy because he isn't bad ass street fighter. Sorry to say, but your priorities is upside down, because who the hell need to be in "real fight", if you can gather millions of dollars by fighting in films? From the beginning, martial arts has only one purpose, and it is make you able to protect yourself against enemy. If you have 7th dan in any martial arts, you doesn't have to prove anything to anybody, because you know that there is no attack without firearms which you cannot stop. So simple, and the facts are facts even if you believe them or not. You would know that if you would have even the first dan black belt in any martial arts, but because you are complete idiot without any talent for anything else than grow hemroids, you will be out from that game for sure.

There was another discussion about this on here not too long ago.
Aikido deals with a lot redirecting your opponent via joint manipulations, etc.
Those moves will want to carry you in a certain direction.
You can either “go with the flow” of the course, or get jacked up by resisting.

“Agreeing” with the moves can often cause them to appear choreographed.
And if, indeed, Aikidokas are putting on a rehearsed demonstration, it can look about as real as a pro-wrestling match.

That being said, there is quite a difference between legitimate Aikido technique and a lot of the shit you see in the movies.
Although, if you look closely at his films, you will sometimes see Seagal use sequences from his Aikido demonstrations from years ago.

MMA isn't much better for street fights than Aikido. Aikido is far harder to master, though.

The thing with that kinda system is that I believe if a guy thats been trained in that for a period of time all of a sudden gets in his first fight on the street 95% of all that info will vanish for the time being because hes too nervous and doesnt have time to set up anything.

Agree with Swede. Leaving the familiar dojo and having to do serious battle in a bar, parking lot or whatever is a 100's times different.  As Swede said, in dojo training you are getting ready to set yourself up for the next play session. You have time. Street attacks can happen without warning and quick as a flash. And can be finished in a matter of seconds. A good street fighter can fight just as well in a confined space or his back against a wall. Most martial art's players can not, they need room. Never at their best when crowded, but a good street fighter can be very effected at close quarters.

I always wondered on people who train specifically for that one street might that may or may not happen. Typically in a bar. I haven't been in one yet, but the ones I have seen it's usually two idiots jawwing off at one another. And then, many times the loser goes and "pops the trunk" on the winner...
I always wonder do people go take classes to actually learn? Or because most guys into MMA are like those who are into Bodybuilding---insecure guys who want to prove themselves to society or the ones who judged them...like Mike Katz. Listen to what he says in Pumping Iron...go to 3:40

Put me in a room full of choreographed black belts, and I too, will look like an "expert".
These displays are more like dancing, than fighting.
Unless, you have some actual true fighting experience, you're a dancer who punches.

Most fights need strong stand up. Whoever you're fighting probably has friends and they aren't going to stand around for five minutes while you wrestle or try some butterfly guard shit.

BJJ is good for fighting and even better for sport, but at the beginner level it's just as complicated to apply as Aikido.

Most traditional arts require years of practice before people have conditioned their reflexes.

I'm no martial arts expert, but that looks a tad choreographed.

As I mentioned on another thread, Aikido was the first martial art that I formally studied and trained in. I was 10 years old at the time. Back in the day when Morihei Ueshiba was young and still had testosterone coursing through his veins and living at a time when Japan was a militaristic, samurai, kick ass culture; Aikido was brutal. I use to read as a kid how they had to mop up the blood on the mats after training. Even as a preteen that was the kind of shit I wanted. But when Ueshiba got older he became more "spiritual" and pacifistic and took competition and free no holds bar training out of the discipline. The academy I trained at was about as pure and authentic as what they were doing in Japan. It wasn't just some gym or a high school where they laid out mats for the night. It was an academy where the instructors from Japan lived and worked.

Aikido as it is practiced today is an utterly worthless martial art. Six months of serious boxing or Jiu-Jitsu training will put you heads and tails above the average street punk. Years of training in Aikido alone will guarantee that you will get your ass kicked by someone who has some working knowledge and skill to throw a punch. I speak from experience. Whenever I got into a fight with someone I'd start off trying the Aikido stuff, realized that guys didn't just mindlessly rush me and roll when I tried to throw them and inevitably had to revert back to some good old fashion hand throwing to save my scrawny preteen and teenage ass from being handed to me.

Watch any Aikido demonstration. Any one. Doesn't make a whit of a difference. It's all the same. Bunch of guys just rushing the master and being thrown around like stuffed teddy bears. There's less than five techniques that are being used and usually just three.

No one fights like that in real life, no one attacks like that, no one just rushed you like that. Unless of course they're drunk or it's your girlfriend who just found out you plowed her younger sister.

Love Seagal's early work though. "Above the Law" was classic. And I never get tired of that bar scene in "Out For Justice"
I always wanted to do shit like that. Walk into some place filled with punks, low life and thugs and just kick some major ass. Of course in real life Seagal, as well as myself, would have been drawn and quartered and left for the maggots in the trash bin. Still, great fantasy. "Anybody see Richie! Anybody know why Richie did Bobby Lupo?" LOL! I love shit like that. Never gets old.

No offense as I've never heard of your discipline but in your training when do you go all out and start trading real blows, kicks  and takedowns in an unrehearsed no holds bar fashion like they do in Boxing, Muy Thai and MMA?

Who the fuck are you dumbass?  Keith is one of the biggest fucking losers on this board.  A grown 40 year old pre diabetic marshemellow fat ass living off his pathetic past accomplishments.  I mean fuck........any grown man that spends as much time posting on getbig and trying to own others has got no life.  I mean seriously, does this guy have a woman in his life?  Kids?  A family?  A career?  Is he independently wealthy?  Yeah I'm sure.......that's why he runs a t-shirt company.......... ::)  He's one of those old burn out dudes that never grew up to handle his responsbilities.  He'll be living off disability and sucking off social security posting on getbig about his recent weighloss and health problems well into his 60's.  LOL...utter pathetic!  The reason he has such a hard on for me is because he knows what I say about him is true!  You can read guys like him like a fucking book.  We see them in the gym, at the bars, walking down the street.

Man where have you been.  Did you get a call from the President to go kill a bunch of terrorists or did Fedor want some tips.  You must be in high demand with all those fighting awards and medals from the military.  How do resist beating the shit out of yourself.  Tell us some more awesome stories about how you kicked a biker gangs ass all by yourself.  I am so proud to say you make fun of me.  I mean for someone with your god-like status taking their time out to make fun of me makes me feel great.  Did you find those photos or yourself and videos of all your fights you were going to post.  Come on man show us what you got.  Cause so far you have been owned by every person on here.  Be a man for once and step up.

A 40 year old has been diabetic walking marshmellow.  I don't have anything to prove.  VeeArnisJitsu is a system unlike anything out there.  If you think the shit Steven Segal does is anything but theatrics and bullshit your fat ass has never been in a real life or death fight.

Here's a sampling of VAJ and what Professor James teaches skip to 1:21 and the real shit begins.

How dumb are you.  who gives a fuck about others.  It doesn't mean you have ever taken it or if you did you aren't any.h good.  Are you like people who say shit like my dad is a plumber so I know everything about plumbing or my dad is an accountant so I know accounting.  See twinkie I see right through your skinny old ass.  You talk shit yet can never prove anything.  Post some videos of your fights.  Post a photo of you doing anything but blowing some guy.  Liek I said you can type with one finger and that's about it.

You clearly no nothing about martial arts. He holds 10th Dan in Aikido.

Aikido is total BS in any type or normal streetfight, he wated decades getting that belt and now anyone that has trained 1-2 year in any hard "mma" like vale tudo or wrestling etc could kick his ass.

That's an ignorant and bullshit claim. I've been practicing Aikido for 8.5 years now and trust me, what you see in Above The Law is the REAL SHIT. These MMA guys would not be able to TOUCH, let alone do ANYTHING to Segal. He can take on more than one guy at a time.. Go to a fucking Aikido dojo and watch any black belt (I just got mine) do a demonstration. All these tough 20 year old kids shooting their mouth because of the MMA and guys like Brock Lesnar. It's fucking bullshit. The bigger they are, the harder THEY WILL FALL.

When I read 40 year marshmellow, I thought that it was a statement about steven seDULL :> Put ANY resonably experience boxer into a street fight or bar fight with an MMA or martial "artist" and they WILL get their plows cleaned LOL These boxers are lightening fast and the throw punches with power. A few quick jabs for a stunner and the a right cross and then it's lights out ;)

I've gone one better and asked an actual black belt in aikido (who also holds one in karate, and is working on his black belt in budo jitsu). When asked what move he would use when someone comes running at him, he replied "I'd punch him or kick him in the balls".

That's one of my employees I'm not firing... ever! ;D

You really think that even one of these martial artists or MMA guys could even get a hold of Roy Jones Jr. much less put him on the ground? First of all, they aren't quick and fast enough to do that, and secondly they couldn't stand the barrage of lightening fast punches.

Its actually quite hilarious to see a trained boxer humiliated fight a person highly skilled in BJJ.

I'm no boxer or jiu-jitsu expert but what fights I have been in ended up mostly me grabbing the guy and either slamming his head on the ground or table or into a wall.  I have never had anyone get away from me once I grab them.  I have knocked out quite a few people too. I even choked a guy out once back when I was with Rorian Gracie. My friends used to say I hit harder than anyone they've seen.  But in reality my old friend Craig Kukuk hit harder than me and anyone I have ever seen up close.  Anyone who has taken Gracie Jiu-Jitsu would know who Craig is.  If he was allowed to fight in the UFC back in the early 90's he would have been champion no doubt.  And anyone who knows Craig would say the same thing.  In fact the Gracies themselves said the same thing (till their falling out).  Craig was the first american black belt in Gracies jiu-jitsu in which I introduced him too.  In addition, I have a feeling not many of you have actually seen Segal in person.  I know he is fat now but that comes with age.  I saw him back in the early 90's or late 80's at a casino as we walked by each other.  And I gotta tell you he is a very big guy.  I know several people who know him and he was very solid and strong.  It comes with being tall with the long arms.  There is no doubt he can fight no matter what people are saying.  Just his size and strength make him somewhat of a threat.

Not if Jones hit them.  But Gracie's thing and thought process at least back then was 90% of street fights end up on the ground.  A few punches are taken then the guys usually grab each other and that is when GJJ takes over.  I think that if Jones doesn;t knock them out with the first or second punch and gracie got ahold him it would be over.  They proved that hundreds of not thousands of times with punchers.  Back then we didn't punch except to get a guy to turn over so you can choke him out or to get a guy to raise his hands so you can shoot in and get ahold of him.  The thing about my friend Craig was he was a devasting puncher that became great at GJJ.  So he had the stand up skill and the ground skill.  And this was back before the UFC started.  He was a solid 190 would absolutely light up Liddell.  I have no doubts about that at all.  Craig was tough and strong and very very fast

Exactly,  I hate it when people say shit like that.  I trained under the Gracies and I am about as far away from being any good as you can get.  even though they had high hopes for me.  I have some of the best baseball coaches anywhere and that didn't help me get into the majors or the hall of Fame.  I played tennis with Bjorn Borg in front of 5000 people that sure didn't make me pro material.  I don't get guys like McPenis.

I honestly can;t see anyone simply lighting up Chuck Liddell. He can be caught in an exchange, but absolutely lit up. lolz. It's the iceman SON.

Well I have seen both fight.  And maybe not lit up but Chuck doesn't have the best of jaws and I have seen Craig get popped clean just so he would get pissed off enough and it didn't phase him.  I would say it would be a great fight but I would bet on Craig 9 out of 10 times.  of course i am doing something I hate.  Making predictions for things that will never happen like when people try to predict who would win between Tyson and Lesnor or whoever.  I hate that.  It will never happen so why worry about it.................... but I would still take Craig ;)

yea yea yea yea.  I have a feeling your way of grappling is different from actual grappling.  Rolling on the floor naked with another man and having a goal of achieving a north/south position is NOT grappling to real men.  Please keep your shit to yourself.  Where are those videos of you fighting and the pics of all your medals you won in the 5 wars you fought in.

I remember you use to bounce at Tequilla Willies. I remember once when a friend of mine starting really getting unruly and I noticed it caught your eye and you started making your way toward him. I immediately got up and grabbed my friend and said, "Lets go outside for a sec. I have to tell you something." It was just an excuse to get him out of there. As I was taking him outside I just nodded at you to let you know it was OK. I then started in on my bud on how I just saved him from an ass whipping. But, that's why I never and have never been drunk.

I only got Renzo's side of the story. He said Craig was stealing from him. I didn't really know Craig other than just getting crushed in his side mount but I know Renzo. You will not find a better more honorable man than Renzo Gracie. His brothers Ralph and, the thankfully decease, Ryan were thugs with Ryan being a border line psychopath but Renzo came out as a man I wanted to aspire to be. Anybody who likes to poke fun at Jiu-Jitsu and think it's nonsense should spend an hour with Renzo. You will leave there loving Jiu-Jitsu and loving Renzo.

How nice it must be, when you can claim anything you want without any evidence about anything claimed. Like in a sandbox when you were a little boy not so long time ago. MY dad is stronger then YOUR dad etc. Fact is that Segal has some evidence for his claims, it is a known fact that he was the first foreigner who has been allowed to start his own dojo for teaching japanese martial art in japan, long time before he start his so called acting career, which has make him a millionaire. Your world and his world meet only when he stops on the traffic lights and you come up to wash the windshield of his car to get few coins for your drugs. You may have been under David and James among plenty of other guys, but what has the fact that you are gay has to do with this matter? You are little just a little boy who think that he is something while everybody knows that you aren't nothing. Try to live with that ;D

Yea tequilla willies was a fun fun place.  The story I heard was that Craig wanted to do a set of instructional tapes.  Renzo told him to go ahead because Craig needed some money to get things going and Renzo I guess didn't want to put any money into it.  So Craig did them and put up the money himself (I think his wife did it since she came from a very wealthy family and in fact paid for the first couple academys).  Nothing came from it (selling of the tapes) until they took off and he sold over a million dollars worth.  Then Rorian got involved and whoever else and Craig told them sorry he got permission to use their name and they were shit out of luck.  Which in reality they were.  Rorian then began charging family members a fee to use the gracie name.  He trademarked it and owned it.  So no gracie could open a school using their name unless they paid Rorian a license fee.  I think it was for 5 years and then after that they could use it without paying.  It really got the family in a battle.  I am not really sure of all the details but that is what I got.  It was to bad at the time.  The gracies are a great family and I really am honored I got to know them

I trained under Craig when he was in that Red Bank, NJ martial arts school.  I don't think he owned it.  I think it was David Lenz (spelling).  I brought the Gracie training tapes at the time.  What I didn't realize at the time is that they kept the good techniques off the instructional tapes.  If you used the shown method of passing the guard you just gave your opponent a perfect triangle opportunity. I got choked everytime until I learned that it was a horrible way to pass the guard and no Gracie would even think about using it. At least at the time Craig's tapes were the cutting edge in instruction.

I think Craig opened a couple locations in Philly.  I have not seen Craig since around 94 or so.  And then it was only when I went over to our friends house he was there.  We used to be close back in the 80's.  He was a good friend.

People take martial arts because they dream of getting thrown around and dancing with other men.
