only the stuff which was probably untrue in the old weider mags, there might be some routines in old ironman mags, i would believe those over the other mags any day.

Interesting and excellent thread!
thank you , i think these movies got a lot of members interested in lifting weights in the first place. i was like 7 or 8 when i saw steve reeves hercules for the first time .dam where did the time go. :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;D dan vadis was one of the taller guys in these movies. he ended up staying in the industry and actually had parts in john wayne, clint eastwood and than lou ferrigno movies. dan came to a tragic end.he actually wanted to bulk up to 270 lbs but i don't think he ever did. the story goes that dan v once locked up in an arm wrestling match against strngth legend chuck ahrens. as the story goes the table broke under the strain of the match and it was ahrens who refused to lock up again.??????

Just stumbled across this - great thread!  :D  And thanks for teaching me the word 'peplum' too.

What is always amusing to me is to look back to people who, as a child, I saw as really 'muscular'.  With the benefit of hindsight - sure, they were lean - but it's funny how one's personal view of physique's changes...

I would say that the biggest problem with that remake is that it was a remake of a much revered film. It would be similar to remaking "Casablanca" with Tom Cruise as Rick and having Rebel Wilson as Ilsa remark about 'lil Wayne as he Auto-Tuned "Weez all be bi"..."Who be that incredibly def-lookin' African-American male at the synthesizer?"

FTN.

Here's a great picture of Reeves with one of the better built and handsome actors from Hollywood, Clint Walker.

Gosh, how tall was Clint?  Because I was under the  (perhaps mistaken) impression that Reeves was 6ft tall.

Still love this thread Mr Funk, sir...

And it's about that time of year I start digging out some of the classics for holiday season. .. It's surprising how many have been remastered into HD - and they can look great on a big screen at home - even better projected (when I can be bothered, that is  ;D)

Thanks for keeping the thread going  8)

Harris

Brad Harris always had a great physique. I think he could have done very well in physique/bodybuilding competition if he had chosen to go that route. In one of his old interviews, he said he had to go easier with weight training because his muscles just kept growing and growing! If only we all had that "problem," LOL.

It doesn't look like anyone mentioned it yet, but Brad Harris passed away in November 2017. Here's Variety's obituary:

I've got the "standard" DVD (somewhere, I just can't recall exactly where, LOL!) and it will depend upon the source from which yours was made but mine DVD isn't a whole lot better than the VHS I also can't find.  ;D

I recently bought the Ultra HD version of "Groundhog Day" and can honestly state that it really wasn't worth it as the Blu-Ray was pretty much just as good.

Thanks Scott.  The picture quality is first class, so I was more interested in if the film itself is good/worth watching - did you enjoy it?  (If you can remember!  ;D)

You know it's now stuck in what passes for my brain...I recall changing  some of the lyrics to this:

"They are there, when pretty girls are bare.  They are here to show that they're not queer".  Or something like that.  ;D

Childhood.   It was weird but fun. My face was in a book or comics or watching the 3Stooges.  Or I was outside on my bicycle.  Or fishing with some friends.  A mild version of "Stand By Me", if you will.

From 2003 - History

By MYRNA OLIVER
SEP. 25, 200312 AM
TIMES STAFF WRITER

Gordon Mitchell, a bodybuilder who joined entertainer Mae West’s buffed all-male chorus line in the mid-1950s and went on to make about 200 B-movies, excelling in the “sword and sandal” genre, has died. He was 80. Mitchell died Saturday night in his sleep at his Marina del Rey home of an apparent heart attack, said his personal assistant, Bill Comstock. The still-fit actor had been in good health, Comstock said, and had recently completed a film in Germany.

Of all the European spaghetti westerns, sci-fi flicks and sparsely scripted fantasy adventures of ancient heroes saving fair damsels and suffering hordes, Mitchell’s most noted film probably was Federico Fellini’s 1970 “Fellini Satyricon.” Mitchell played a robber in the colorful portrait of ancient Roman debauchery, which is still an art-house favorite.

Mitchell, who lived and filmed in Italy from 1961 to 1989, was featured in the Swords & Sandals Festival presented in June by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. His showcased film was the 1961 “The Giant of Metropolis,” in which he portrayed the title’s prehistoric, loincloth-clad muscleman who endures torture in a weird futuristic world.

“I did my own stunts. I tried to make everything real,” Mitchell told The Times during the festival, adding that he often worked on three films at once and trained constantly off-camera, often lifting rocks when no barbells were available. On Labor Day in 2001, Mitchell, former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay and five of their fellow celluloid he-men were honored by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks at Venice’s Muscle Beach, where they first built the muscles that made them beefcake stars.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s when the bodybuilders, including fitness advocates Joe Gold, Vic Tanny and Jack LaLanne, worked out at Muscle Beach, society matrons and celebrities alike would come to ogle. One admirer was the aging but canny Mae West, who realized decades before Madonna that scantily clad boy toys could enliven her stage act.

The exposure earned Mitchell uncredited roles in some major A-list films of the 1950s, including “Prisoner of War,” starring Ronald Reagan; “The Man With the Golden Arm,” starring Frank Sinatra; and “The Ten Commandments,” featuring Charlton Heston. But Mitchell still didn’t give up his day job as a Los Angeles high school teacher and guidance counselor. Not until muscleman Steve Reeves starred in the 1959 “Hercules,” which touched off a new genre of movies about bigger-than-life heroes of ancient Greece and Rome.

Then Mitchell moved to Italy and really started making movies. His first starring role was as Maciste, a strongman of Italian folklore turned into the better-known Atlas for American audiences in what was titled in the U.S. “Atlas Against the Cyclops.” Mitchell also played other mythical or literary giants: Pluto, Goliath, Igor, Ali Baba. The stern-faced bodybuilder remained in demand over the years as a general or other military officer of armies from various nations and eras.

The knockoff Hercules films were made cheaply in Italy and Spain, mostly by Italian production companies. The little dialogue they featured could easily be dubbed into many languages, making the bodybuilders international stars.  Mitchell, like others, acknowledged that he never knew what was going on in a film because he couldn’t read or speak Italian.

Born Charles Pendleton in Denver, Mitchell moved to Los Angeles to attend USC. He served in the Army during World War II, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge, and reenlisted for the Korean War.

Gordon Mitchell was one of those perfectly developed bodybuilders who jumped on the Steve Reeves bandwagon and hightailed it to Italy to seek movie stardom as a Herculean strongman. Born in Denver, Colorado, but raised in Inglewood, California, Mitchell served in WWII and at one point became a prisoner of war. After the war he went to college and became a high school teacher, albeit an imposing one, what with his incredible physique. He eventually became part of the "Muscle Beach" crowd and flexed his way into the entertainment field as part of Mae West's musclebound revues, where he toured everywhere from Las Vegas to the Latin Quarter with other "abs"normal actor wannabes such as Mickey Hargitay, Brad Harris and Reg Lewis. Mitchell took a fancy to show biz and appeared as posing beefcake in such films as The Ten Commandments (1956) and Li'l Abner (1959), which, of course, did little to advance his acting career. In 1961, after Reeves' Hercules (1958) (US title: "Hercules") proved a phenomenal hit and revived the "muscleman" genre, the non-Italian-speaking Mitchell headed off to Europe and began appearing in the same type of badly dubbed sandal-and-spear epics. Adept at displaying both heroics and villainy, he developed his own core of fans, but when the fad wore off around 1965, Mitchell--unlike many of his colleagues in that field who just dropped out of sight--stayed on and appeared in over 100 more films, many of them in the "spaghetti western" genre, staying true to the country that made him a star.

Born   August 26, 1942 in Venice, Veneto, Italy
Birth Name   Adriano Bellini
Height   6' 1" (1.85 m)
Mini Bio (1)
One of the many muscle men of peplum who dominated Italian sword-and-sandal epics in the early 60s, Italian Kirk Morris (born Adriano Bellini) was born in the late 1930s and plucked from the canals of Venice for his go at moviedom. A gondolier when discovered by an Italian movie producer, he was deemed a perfect speciman to showcase their spectacles and a fitting hero to help offset the silly special effects and ridiculously dubbed dialogue. If one must try to distinguish Kirk from the rest of the mythical bodybuilders (Steve Reeves, Alan Steel, Richard Harrison, Dan Vadis, Reg Park, Brad Harris, et al.), he often dyed his pompadour-styled hair blond and he had a slight, sulky resemblance to Elvis Presley. Other than that his stoic posings of Hercules, Samson, Maciste and the others were no better or worse. Once the genre had lost its audience in the mid-60s, Kirk maintained for a few more years in war stories and westerns, but eventually migrated to the United States where he went into the advertising field. Years later he returned to Italy and the movies -- this time as a producer.

Trivia (5)
Footage from his film Il trionfo di Maciste (1961) was humorously used in a deodorant commercial in the late 1960s, with Kirk flexing and boldly restraining horses during a chariot racing sequence. The female narrator softly purrs, "My brother works hard... he needs a strong deodorant".
Despite his Anglo-sounding screen name, he was one of the very few Italian bodybuilders (his real name is Adriano Bellini) to achieve stardom in the sword and sandal/mythological muscleman genre. This also made him one of the few leading performers who was able to speak the Italian dialog from the script.
Twice subjected to the traditional "Test of Strength" found in sword-and-sandal movies. In both Il trionfo di Maciste (1961) and Atlas Against the Czar (1964) he was tied with outstretched arms between two teams of horses, which then endeavored to pull him apart. In neither case did the horses succeed.
Was a gondolier on a canal boat in Venice, Italy, before becoming an actor.
As his acting career in movies drew to a close, Kirk Morris became a fotoromanzi actor.

Served in the Navy.
Member of the Mae West Muscleman Revue in the late 1950s.
Was good friends with fellow muscle man Gordon Mitchell, who helped him get into the film business.
He began his film career as a star in the Italian produced sword and sandal/mythological muscleman movies. His films were produced in the waning years of that genre. However, unlike the other stars of that genre, he was able to obtain roles in the next popular Italian produced genre, the spaghetti westerns.
Dan Vadis featured as Frank, one of the "Black Widows", a motorcycle gang that gave Clint Eastwood's character, Philo Bedoe, no end of trouble in Every Which Way But Loose (1978) and Any Which Way You Can (1980).

Born   August 3, 1926 in Portland, Oregon, USA

Birth Name   Gordon Merrill Werschkul
Nickname   Pete
Height   6' 3" (1.91 m)
Mini Bio (2)
Physical Education major Gordon Weschkul left the University of Oregon after one term. He became an infantry drill instructor (rifle, pistol and bayonet; judo and hand-to-hand combat; close order drill), then a military policeman. After his honorable discharge in 1947, he was a fireman, cowboy, and farm machinery salesman. In 1953, a Las Vegas lifeguard, he was spotted by a pair of Hollywood agents who introduced him and his 19-inch biceps to Sol Lesser, who had already conducted 200 tests in search of a new Tarzan. The producer gave him a seven-year contract and a new last name. His three MGM Tarzans were run-of-the mill, but his two for Sy Weintraub, through Paramount, marked a rebirth of the Tarzan character. The movies were well received. Weintraub was looking for a leaner, more thoughtful Tarzan so Scott moved on to a number of Italian strong-man spectaculars and spaghetti westerns, becoming a sensation in Europe.
- IMDb Mini Biography By: Ed Stephan <stephan@cc.wwu.edu>

American actor and body-builder whose greatest claim to fame was his role as the movies' eleventh (and some say best) Tarzan. Scott was born Gordon Merrill Werschkul in Portland, Oregon, one of nine children of advertising man Stanley Werschkul and his wife Alice. He grew up in Oregon, where he discovered body-building, which he took up in order, he said, to attract women. He attended the University of Oregon for one semester. Drafted into the United States Army in 1944, he served as a military policeman and drill instructor and was honorably discharged in 1947. For the next six or seven years, he worked at various jobs, mostly delivering soda pop for the beverage company owned by his brother Rafield. An offer of a job as a lifeguard at the Las Vegas Sahara Hotel led him to leave his delivery job. Soon thereafter, a Hollywood talent scout took note of him and signed him to a contract with Sol Lesser, producer of the Tarzan movies. His handsome features, muscular physique, and imposing height made him an excellent choice to replace Lex Barker as Tarzan, and he won out over 200 candidates for the role. It was Lesser who changed his name from Werschkul to Scott. Scott's Tarzan films ranged from rather cheap re-edited television pilots to larger scale epics. Two of them, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959) and Tarzan the Magnificent (1960) are generally considered to be among the very best Tarzan films ever made. Scott's (and his writers') particular gifts to the series included returning Tarzan to his former status as a literate, well-spoken character. Following his departure from the Tarzan films, he moved to Italy and became a popular star of what were known as "sword and sandal" epics, featuring handsome body-builders as various characters from Greek and Roman myth. Scott was a friend of Hercules star Steve Reeves, and collaborated with him as Remus to Reeves's Romulus in Duel of the Titans (1961). Scott also played such mythic heroes as Goliath, Zorro, and Buffalo Bill in various low-budget productions during the mid-1960s. His final film appearance, apparently, was in The Tramplers (1965), aka "The Tramplers," filmed in 1966, released in the U. S. in 1968. Scott was married apparently three times, including once to his Tarzan co-star, actress Vera Miles, from 1954 to 1959. He had one child (with Miles) and possibly several more children. For the last two decades of his life, he was a popular guest at film conventions and autograph shows. His manner of making a living the last forty years of his life is unclear, for aside from autograph shows and selling occasional souvenir knives, he does not seem to have been employed. He spent much of his final years living with fans who remembered him from his Tarzan days. Scott died on April 30, 2007, in Baltimore, Maryland at Johns Hopkins Hospital of lingering complications from multiple heart surgeries earlier in the year. Estranged from his family, he was survived by two sisters and a brother, none of whom had seen him in years.

Spouse (2)
Vera Miles   (14 April 1956 - 2 March 1960) ( divorced) ( 1 child)
Janice Mae Wynkoop   (1947 - 1950) ( divorced) ( 1 child)
Trivia (13)
He was a friend of Hercules actor Steve Reeves. It was Reeves' idea for him to play Remus opposite his Romulus in Duel of the Titans (1961) (aka "Duel of the Titans").
Son Michael Scott born in 1957.
Married three times.
In 1957, he appeared on the TV show, You Bet Your Life (1950). Host Groucho Marx jokingly called him, "Great Scott".
His prior experience on a half dozen Tarzan movies made him one of the few stars of the Italian produced sword and sandal/mythological muscleman movies to be praised for this acting talent as well as his physique.
He was to be the star of the proposed television series "Hercules" in which he would be the title character. A pilot episode, Hercules and the Princess of Troy (1965), was filmed but the series didn't sell.
Was a lifeguard at the Saraha Hotel in Las Vegas when he was discovered by Hollywood producer Sol Lesser.
Spent his final 6 years living as a 'guest' in the spare bedroom of one of his fans in Baltimore, Maryland.
At the height of his Tarzan/gladiator fame, Scott was a mighty 6' 3", 218 pounds and had 19-inch biceps.
Ex-stepfather of Kelley Miles and Debra Miles.
He played Tarzan in six films, more than anyone except for Johnny Weissmuller, who played the role in twelve films.
He is buried in the Kensico Cemetery, located in Valhalla, Winchester County, New York, where the Russian born composer Sergei Rachmaninoff is also buried.
The only actor to have played both Tarzan and Zorro.
Personal Quotes (2)
Being an actor is one thing I never thought about doing, but once you're in it, it spoils you for anything else if you're successful at it. The money's so easy, you meet beautiful people. My God, that's the ideal situation - kind of a fantasy world. It's the best way to travel too. First class, and you get to see a lot of interesting places.
Tarzan was ideal for me because I didn't have too much dialogue.

Another moment in cinematic history where black folk wuz robbed.  This film is hysterically based and should've been titled (as the original story was but was changed by whitey)...

"Ramulus and Uncle Remus"

I know... ;D  Originally they wanted Reeves to play both roles but he convinced the folks in charge to hire Gordon Scott.  It's another early favorite of mine.  Thanks! ;D

Overview (1)
Born   January 23, 1936 in Niles, California, USA
Mini Bio (1)
Dark, curly-haired, well-chiseled Reg Lewis started professional body-building at a very young age, a title-holder ("Junior Mr. Olympics") by age 17. A favorite model in physique magazines, the incomparable Mae West took a gander at the handsome hulk while he was working out at the gym one day and added him to her collection of absurdly-muscled, Adonis-like figures for her nightclub act in 1954, along with Mickey Hargitay, Gordon Mitchell and Dan Vadis. Ms. West and her beefcake entourage thrilled the all-female audiences as they toured throughout the U.S. Over the years Reg often acted as Mae's escort as well, accompanying her to assorted film premieres, nightclub openings, etc. During this time he also added a number of fitness trophies to his mantle - Mr. Olympics (1956), Mr. Universe (1957), Mr. America (1963) and Mr. America Over Forty (1983).

In 1962, he tried, like others, to muscle in on Steve Reeves' territory by acting in Italian films. Reg appeared as the titular hero in Colossus of the Stone Age (1962) [Fire Monsters Against the Son of Hercules], where, as Maxus, he battles a swarm of fire-breathing creatures to save the residents of a remote valley. This badly-dubbed pic fared no better or worse than any others, but Reg did not appear in any others.

He did appear (actually posed is more like it) in The Brass Bottle (1964) with Burl Ives and Barbara Eden, Don't Make Waves (1967)_ with Tony Curtis and the late Sharon Tate, and Sextette (1977) with Ms. West but it led to no other offers. Reg Lewis dedicated himself to the sport of bodybuilding for over 30 years.

Born   July 16, 1933 in St. Anthony, Idaho, USA
Died   November 7, 2017  (undisclosed)
Birth Name   Bradford Jan Harris
Height   5' 11" (1.8 m)
Mini Bio (1)
Born in St. Anthony, a small town in eastern Idaho, Bradford Harris attended UCLA in the early 1950s, where he played fullback on the football team while studying economics. His studies may have been intended as the groundwork for a career in his family's banking business, but Harris instead drifted into the fringes of Los Angeles' movie industry, and secured employment as a stunt man. In the late 1950s he traveled to Europe as the stunt co-ordinator for a German-Italian co-production. Soon he found himself working as a second-unit director, and that led to a starring role in Goliath Against the Giants (1961). His good looks and muscular build kept him in demand during the era of "sword and sandal" movies, and when this genre began to fade away, he moved into "spaghetti westerns" and a spate of action movies with an emphasis on spy thrillers. In 1967 he married actress Olga Schoberová.

Father, with Olga Schoberová, of daughter, Sabrina Calley.
He and Olga Schoberová have one daughter, Sabrina Calley, called "Babrinka".
Personal Quotes (1)
Because of Muscle Beach and Steve Reeves, I began weight training. Because of Muscle Beach and Steve Reeves I became a third-world movie star and traveled around the world many times and experienced many adventures. I now live near Muscle Beach and see it almost every evening. I walk down to the beach and sit on a turned-over trash can while gazing up into the great beyond. The oxygen from the ocean breeze is invigorating and rejuvenating. I get some of my best ideas during that quiet period of meditation under the darkening sky. Modern medicine is now discovering the value of pure oxygen used in a hyperbaric chamber to combat the many diseases that can't survive in pure oxygen. Exercise and oxygen therapy is a new medical discovery with great promise.

Born   1930 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Birth Name   Sam Burke
Height   6' 4" (1.93 m)
Mini Bio (1)
Samson was born Samuel Burke, in Montreal, Canada, to his parents Jack and Mina Burke. Sam attended Baron Byng High School and McGill University, both in Montreal. As a teenager, Sam was interested in bodybuilding and worked for many years to tune and shape his body. Part of his daily training regiment was swimming. Sam became a competitive swimmer, capturing a number of "state" titles, including the 100 meter Butterfly and 200 meter Breaststroke. Sam's love of the water also saw him leading his Water Polo team to win the national championships. Sam represented Canada in the Olympic Games competing in the 200 meter Butterfly. He was also selected as "Canada's Greatest All-Round Collegiate Athlete". After leaving amateur swimming Sam participated in the 10 mile world swimming championship in Lake Ontario, in Ontario Canada.

After competing in and winning numerous local competitions, Sam won the title of "Mr. Montreal". He set his sights high, pushed himself hard, and entered the national championships. Sam was again triumphant, and captured the high profile title of "Mr. Canada". With this massive accomplishment under his belt, Sam turned his sights southward and relocated to sunny southern California. Continuing his regiment of hard work, Sam entered and won the coveted "Mr. Muscle Beach" competition. The International Federation of Bodybuilders named Sam the "Top Amateur Athlete in the World" at the world bodybuilding championships.

With his ultimate physique and physical fitness, Sam decided to try his hand at wrestling. Like everything Sam tries, he succeeded...and succeeded big. After consultation with famed wrestling promoter-booking agent Rudy Dusek, Samuel Burke was renamed "Sammy Berg - Mr.Canada". Sam spent several years in the ring, racking up hundreds of wins on his own, as well as a tag team partner. Sam won the "World Heavyweight Wrestling" title in the late 1950s by beating then Champion, Buddy Rogers. Along with Seymour Koenig, Sam also won the "International Television Tag Team" title in the late 50s. Sam participated in matches across the country, including several fights at famed Madison Square Gardens. Sam fought hundreds of matches against high profile wrestlers and boxers, including: Primo Canara, Antonio Rocca, Lou Thesz and even Joe Lewis, just to mention a few.

Sam again thought it was time for a change, and set his sights on Hollywood. Sam starred in approximately 20 films in the United States and Europe. Sam worked with famous director Federico Fellini in two films, and starred with the legendary comedy team "The Three Stooges" in the Columbia Studios release, "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules". Of course, Sam played Hercules! Sam also made several guest starring appearances in top TV shows like "I Spy" and "Magnum PI".

After several years of physically exhausting roles, he decided it was time to take life a little easier. Sam decided to relocate to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, where he joined the crew of the hit show, Magnum PI. Sam worked on Magnum PI until the show wrapped in 1988.

Of course, through the years, he continued with his first love...physical fitness. Today Sam operates his own personal training business.

Sharon M. Hildebrand   (27 November 1960 - present) ( 1 child)
Trivia (15)
Posed nude as Playgirl's Man of the Month for April, 1974.
Avid weightlifter; holds the Guinness world record for oldest person to bench-press over 300 pounds.
Bodybuilding titles: Mr. Indianapolis (1954), Mr. Indiana (1960), Mr. Hercules and the world title of Mr. International Health Physique
Father of actor Peter Lupus III.
Wife Sharon is a fitness consultant. They met in the 1950s when she visited the gym that Peter owned in Indiana. They kept their marriage a secret for a time because of the voluminous fan mail from women he was receiving during his run on Mission: Impossible (1966).
Along with Greg Morris, he is one of only two Mission: Impossible (1966) cast members to stay with the series throughout its entire run.
Holds two world records for lifting a total of 76,280 pounds in 27 minutes, set in 2002 at age 70. He plans on breaking both of his world records again on his birthday in June 2007, at age 75.
He was hired by the US Army to appear in a series of commercials playing the role of Superman with the permission of "Detective Comics" (aka National Periodical Publications, now known as DC Comics). He did so for many months until the Playgirl pictorial was published. He then subsequently was terminated and the Army for many years later did no longer produce recruitment commercials for broadcast television. The Vietnam War was also a too still fresh memory in many Americans' minds. He distanced himself from the magazine since the 1980s and has declined further pictorials in later years.
Best remembered by the public for his starring role as "Willie Armitage" on the TV series Mission: Impossible (1966).
A month after his 75th birthday on July 19, 2007 he broke his own weight-lifting endurance record of 76,280 pounds in 27 minutes that he had set in 2002 at age 70 by lifting 77,560 pounds in 24 minute and 50 seconds.
Is Italian-American. His surname, Lupus, is an ancient Roman family name. From the Latin word "lupus" (later "lupo") which means "wolf".
Census and marriage records show that his father was born in Syria; his mother was from the United States.
Graduated from Butler University, Indianapolis, IN; 1954.
Graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, IN; 1950.
With his height, bodybuilder physique and handsome good looks, he was a natural for the starring roles in the sword and sandal/mythological muscle man movies. He went to Europe and got the lead roles and top billing, under the name "Rock Stevens," in four such films in the final years (1964-1965) of that genre's popularity.
Personal Quotes (1)

Born   June 7, 1928 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, UK
Died   November 22, 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa  (melanoma)
Birth Name   Roy Park
Nickname   Reg the Leg
Height   6' 1" (1.85 m)
Mini Bio (1)
The future Italian epic star was registered as Roy Park in 1928, but little Reg was soon re-named after his father Reginald Park Snr., a well-known gymnasium proprietor in Leeds and owner of the Reg Park Barbell Company. Reg Jnr. played reserve team football for Leeds United before turning to body-building in 1946. He finished Mr Universe runner-up to future film rival Steve Reeves in 1950, then won the title outright in 1951, 1958 and 1965. After marrying South African-born Mareon Isaacs in Johannesburg in 1952, the Parks moved permanently to South Africa where Reg ran a chain of fitness studios. In December 1960 he was invited to Rome to star in two back-to-back Hercules movies, Hercules Conquers Atlantis (1961) followed immediately by Hercules in the Haunted World (1961). Since these were directed by intellectually acclaimed veterans Vittorio Cottafavi and Mario Bava, Reg Park himself became something of a cult personality in the Italian epic genre. His friend and protege Arnold Schwarzenegger considered Park to be the best of the "peplum" heroes.

Three more sword-and-sandals followed, including Maciste in King Solomon's Mines (1964) which, handily for Park, was filmed on location in South Africa.

Trivia (12)
Mr. Universe in 1951, 1958 and 1965.
Father of environmentalist and tree-planter Jeunesse Park (born 1954) and Montreal Olympics swimmer Jon-Jon Park (born 1957).
His father, Reginald Park, owned a gymnasium and barbell company and followed his father into competition.
In later years he served as a contributor to a muscle magazine and judged competitions.
His wife, whom he married in 1952, was a former ballerina from South Africa.
He was Arnold Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding inspiration due to impressing the young man with his performance in Hercules in the Haunted World (1961). Arnold trained with him in the late 60s and actually lived with him and his family for a time in their home in South Africa. It was he who urged Arnold into taking the Hercules in New York (1970) film role as a money-making proposition.
On October 22, 1952, he married the beautiful Mareon Isaacs, the sister of bodybuilder star and commercial film technician Johnny Isaacs. The powerfully built Isaacs almost won the Mr. Universe title himself in 1953 and competed into the early 1960s winning several prestigious titles.
Not only massively built but incredibly strong, Park often demonstrated his strength in public promotions, lifting up the back of cars, among other feats.
He was the only British bodybuilder to become a star in the Italian made sword and sandal/mythological muscleman movies that became a popular genre from the late 1950s into the mid 1960s.
At age 42, he competed against Arnold Schwarzenegger in a 1970 body-building contest and was edged out in a closely fought contest - losing the Mr. Universe title to Schwarzenegger by only 1/2 a point. In his last physique competition Park once again placed 2nd at the 1973 Mr. Universe at age 45. Park always maintained that he trained and competed steroid free.
Park was the first bodybuilder to bench press 500 lbs, and the second man in history to succeed with that weight. He achieved the lift on his 25th birthday, just 10 days after Canadian Olympic Weightlifter Doug Hepburn became the first to Bench Press 500 pounds on May 28, 1953. Hepburn outweighed Park by 60 pounds.
Personal fitness trainer in South Africa [2001]
Personal Quotes (1)
Reg was a dear friend, an extraordinary mentor and a personal hero. Other than my parents, there may be no single person who had more to do with me becoming the person I am today than Reg. He was like a second father to me. It was Reg who impressed upon me how hard I would have to work if I wanted to achieve my dreams. I'll always remember him making me do calf-raises with 1,000 pounds at 5 o'clock in the morning. --Arnold Schwarzenegger, regarding Park's influence

Mini Bio (1)
One of a load of ab-normal muscular men who stood on the Neopolitan pectoral pedestal during the sword-and-sandal craze of the early 1960s, Sergio Ciani was born in Italy and went by the aptly-named stage moniker "Alan Steel" while in the meat of his film career. Playing assorted mythological demigods in cheaply-made but highly popular spectacles of the early 1960s, the actor also occasionally went by his birth name. Riding on a cinematic tidal wave ignited by Montana-born bodybuilder and one-time "Mr Universe" Steve Reeves in the cult hit Hercules (1958) [aka Hercules], Steel was actually one of the very few native Italians to play these colossal he-men as most were transported from America or England.

Steel started off his beefcake run off as a body double for Reeves in both the "Hercules" sequel Hercules Unchained (1959) [Hercules Unchained] and in The Giant of Marathon (1959) [Giant of Marathon], in which he also had bit roles. Within a couple of years Steel was posing front-and-center as Herk himself in Samson (1961) [Samson] opposite another physique-minded American import, Brad Harris in the title role. On numerous occasions Steel was asked to play the legendary Greek hero, as well as the equally well-built demigods Samson and Ursus, even though the film titles often fused (or confused) them in their titles. Steel starred as Hercules in Hercules Against Rome (1964) [Hercules Against Rome], Hercules Against the Moon Men (1964) [Hercules Against the Moon Men], Hercules and the Black Pirates (1964) [Hercules and the Black Pirate], and Lost Treasure of the Incas (1964) [Hercules and the Treasure of the Incas], the second movie mentioned being one of the only spectacles to actually incorporate science fiction into the genre. In contrast, his Hercules serves as a mere sidekick in the Zorro-like spectacle Hercules and the Masked Rider (1963) [Hercules and the Masked Rider] starring Ettore Manni.

It was not surprising to find Steel cast as a heavy during his prime as well -- menacing the very heroes he was prone to playing -- such as his crazed emperor Commodus in Rebel Gladiators (1962) [Ursus, the Rebel Gladiator] opposite Dan Vadis. He also played the supporting role of Kaldos in The Fury of Hercules (1962) [The Fury of Hercules] when it was Brad Harris' turn to play the title role.

By mid-decade the Herculean phase had faded away and Steel went on, unlike others peplum stars, to other film styles -- dramas, thrillers, horror, oaters, even comedies. In the late 1960s he and fellow movie musclemen Kirk Morris and Gordon Mitchell served up a "spaghetti western" entitled Sapevano solo uccidere (1968) [Saguaro]. In 1976 Steel starred in and co-wrote a Robin Hood movie, and in 1979 ended his on-camera appearances with the Italian comedy Baby Love (1979).

As a footnote, in 1993 Australian filmmakers took Alan's film Samson and the Mighty Challenge (1964) [Samson and the Mighty Challenge] and did a total re-edit to create a brand new feature (an action comedy), with original scenes, Aussie actors and a new soundtrack. The film was entitled Hercules Returns (1993).

Overview (4)
Born   November 9, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA
Birth Name   Louis Jude Ferrigno
Nicknames   Big Louie
Hulk
Height   6' 5" (1.96 m)
Mini Bio (1)
An internationally famous and well respected bodybuilder / actor, Lou Ferrigno first appeared on TV screens in 1977 as the musclebound The Incredible Hulk (1977), the alter ego of meek scientist David Banner. Ferrigno was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1951 and as a child suffered from an ear infection that resulted in permanent partial hearing loss. Undeterred by what some may have perceived as a disadvantage, Lou threw himself into athletics (predominantly weightlifting and body building) and at the age of 21 won his first Mr. Universe title. For good measure, he came back and won it again the following year!

He also played professional football in the Canadian Football League, before coming to the attention of producer Kenneth Johnson, who was seeking just the right person to portray on screen the comic book superhero, The Incredible Hulk. With his 6' 4", 285 lb. frame, Lou was the biggest professional bodybuilder of the time, and had recently starred in the documentary Pumping Iron (1977), about the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest in South Africa. He successfully auditioned for the part of the green-skinned Goliath, and that is the role with which he is most closely identified.

"The Hulk" was a huge ratings success and spawned several telemovies after the initial TV series completed its run. Lou continued to remain busy in films and TV with appearances often centered around his remarkable physique. His films included Hercules (1983), Sinbad of the Seven Seas (1989) and Frogtown II (1992). Lou has additionally guest-starred on several TV shows including The Fall Guy (1981) and The New Mike Hammer (1984) and had a recurring role on The King of Queens (1998). In 1997 he was featured in the dynamic documentary about his sensational return to professional bodybuilding at age 43, Stand Tall (1997). The film detailed how he returned to compete in the Masters category of the Mr. Olympia contest against several familiar bodybuilding foes. In more recent years, he has appeared in several films, including The Misery Brothers (1995), Ping! (2000), From Heaven to Hell (2002) and a cameo as a security guard in the big-budget remake of Hulk (2003).

Big Lou is also a successful author with two books detailing his bodybuilding knowledge, and his life behind the scenes playing the Incredible Hulk on TV in the 1970s, plus he has a popular website frequented by his many fans worldwide.

Vocal slur
Is most live action feature filmmakers' preferred choice to voice the Hulk.
Huge muscular physique
Towering height
The only human to ever be cast as the hulk without CGI.
Trivia (36)
Professional bodybuilder. Played professional football in Canada.
Partially hearing-impaired
1974: Won the bodybuilding title, "Mr. Universe".
1973: Won the bodybuilding title, "Mr. America".
1973: Won the bodybuilding title, "Mr. Universe".
1970: Won the bodybuilding title, "Teenage Mr. America".
Weighs 275 pounds - with 59" chest - 34" waist - 22. 5" bicep - 29" thighs and 19" neck.
Has three children with Carla Ferrigno: Shanna Ferrigno (b. 1981), Lou Ferrigno Jr. (b. 1984) and Brent Ferrigno (b. 1990).
The youngest bodybuilder ever to hold the "Mr. Universe" title (age 20).
His parents, Matty Ferrigno and Victoria Ferrigno, appeared with him in the documentary Pumping Iron (1977).
In the late '80s he decided to tone down his massive body so that people would be more likely to see him as a person and not just as his "monster" alter ego "The Hulk".
Growing up, he was a fan of the '50s "Hercules" films that starred bodybuilder Steve Reeves and a fan of the Incredible Hulk comic books. He went on to play both the Incredible Hulk (both live action and providing the voice of the Hulk for an animated series) and Hercules.
There was supposed to be another TV movie after The Death of the Incredible Hulk (1990) showing the Hulk's return, but the death of Lou's co-star Bill Bixby ended that possibility.
Bench-pressed 560 lbs in his prime (age 25). Now, at the age of 50, he benches 400 lbs.
Declares The Incredible Hulk (1977) episode "King of the Beach" (in which he played a bodybuilder, in addition to the Hulk) his favorite episode of the series.
Like so many of the bodybuilders who starred in the "Hercules" films of the late '50s and early '60s, his voice was dubbed for his own "Hercules" films.
Stated that his father was very critical of and negative towards him when he was growing up due to his hearing disability. Though Lou respected his father, he was very hurt when his father expressed his belief that Lou would never achieve success.
Was originally cast as 'Tigris of Gaul' in Gladiator (2000), but was replaced during production by Sven-Ole Thorsen who had been trying hard for over a year to get the part.
Beat out Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role of the Hulk on the TV series The Incredible Hulk (1977). Ferrigno won reportedly because Arnold, at 6' 2", was deemed not tall enough, while Lou was 6' 5".
Has appeared in four different adaptations of "The Incredible Hulk". The first was the live-action television series of the late 1970s and early 1980s (The Incredible Hulk (1977)), in which he played the Hulk--and does not speak. In the 1990s he played the role again in an animated series for the UPN network, The Incredible Hulk (1996) -- this time providing the creature's voice. In Ang Lee's 2003 film Hulk (2003) the Hulk is computer-generated, so Lou plays a completely different part - that of a security guard (along with Stan Lee) at the lab where Bruce Banner works. In the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk (2008), he plays a security guard again, this time one who allows Bruce Banner to enter with a pizza -- and also, once again, voices the Hulk.
With the death of Jack Colvin on December 1, 2005, he is the only surviving star of The Incredible Hulk (1977). Bill Bixby died on November 21, 1993.
Attended Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY--the same neighborhood where director Spike Lee now resides.
2/11/06: He was sworn in as a Los Angeles County Reserve Deputy Sheriff. He will serve for at least 20 hours each month. His duties will include helping recruit new deputies and working with the sheriff's Youth Activities League and the Special Victims Bureau.
He stood 6' 5" and he was the tallest professional body builder of the 1970s. Due to natural aging, he now stands 6'3 1/2".
In his book "My Incredible Life As The Hulk", he stated that he has never been compensated for any merchandising related to The Incredible Hulk (1977) TV series. He said it was because no such deals existed for him during the show's prime-time run.
In October 1981 he was in Egypt, scheduled to be one of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's personal guests at a public event. However, at the last minute Sadat canceled his appearance. A few days later Muslim fundamentalists killed Sadat, along with 12 others, at an annual military parade. It was later discovered that Sadat's killers had originally planned to assassinate him at the event where Ferrigno would have been seated next to him. Ferrigno believes that he would have been killed along with Sadat if Sadat had not canceled his appearance.
Best known by the public for his starring role as The Incredible Hulk (1977).
Although Lou played "The Hulk" in the TV series, the growls and snarls heard in it aren't his. They were made by actor Ted Cassidy (Lurch in The Addams Family (1964)) until 1979 (first two seasons). Then, after Cassidy's death in that year, the Hulk was voiced by actor Charles Napier for the remaining three seasons and the three movies made in later years.
Former personal trainer for Michael Jackson. Jackson invited him to be his personal trainer to prepare for the This is It concerts. Ferrigno had appeared in Jackson's "Liberian Girl" short film in 1989 and they remained friends until Jackson's death in 2009.
Along with Stan Lee, he is one of only two actors to appear in both Hulk (2003) and The Incredible Hulk (2008).
In his peak body-building days, he could bench press nearly 500 pounds.
Acting mentor was Bill Bixby.
Appeared, with Erik Estrada, in a commercial for "Butterfinger". [2010]
In 1986 he was set to star in an unnamed war-action movie, heavily inspired by "Rambo: First Blood Part II". Playing a Vietnam veteran on a mission, similar to John Rambo, he would impress the viewers with his stunning physical condition. The movie was cancelled.
Sybil Danning had a huge crush on him when the two filmed their 1983 fantasy film "Hercules." Ferrigno was in peak physical condition at the time.
Once refereed a professional wrestling match.
Personal Quotes (7)
Everyone has his own "little Hulk" inside him.
If I hadn't lost my hearing, I wouldn't be where I am now. It forced me to maximize my potential. I had to be better than the average person to succeed. That's why I chose bodybuilding. If I became a world champion, if I could win admiration from my peers, I could do anything.
[his response (in 1979) to an indication that he shared the spotlight with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) villain Darth Vader, played by David Prowse, another muscle-bound actor] Anybody could play Darth Vader. Vader is basically just a big guy behind a costume. The character shows no emotion, no nothing! If you really showed the emotional side of The Hulk he could be even hotter than "Star Wars". Battlestar Galactica (1978) didn't show any feelings and that's the big reason why I think it was canceled.
[regarding then competing series Wonder Woman (1975)] And as for "Wonder Woman" . . . there's nothing there . . . nothing to show at all but a "beautiful body", and that's it. You never get a chance to find out anything about the person at all. What a bore! I can't understand why that show ran as long as it did.
[Of Bill Bixby]: Bill was a great guy. He was a great mentor, great director, great producer and all the things that were great. Bill had a lot on him, because he loved his son, Christopher. When he lost his son, 2 days later, he came on the set and continued filming, and I knew he did that!
[on his on- and off-screen chemistry with Bill Bixby, who played Dr. David Banner]: You know, a couple of times on the set if I was late, I remember that look he gave me, oh boy! I thought, he would be 'The Hulk.'
[on Bill Bixby's battle against prostate cancer]: When I saw him --- on the set, he did for Entertainment Tonight, I was horrified when I see how he looked. I mean, he's actually breaking down into tears in his face, it was like 2 weeks before he died. It was so sad that it took a lot of courage for him to do the interviews, and so sad as to how life had lost him.

Trivia (30)
Member of ensemble cast of Mae West's stage show.
After ex-wife Jayne Mansfield's death, Mickey arranged to have a heart-shaped headstone erected for her at her place of burial.
Inspired to body-build after seeing a magazine cover of Steve Reeves (Hercules (1958)), Mickey won the "Mr. Universe" competition in 1955 and later appeared as Hercules, himself, in the Italian film, The Loves of Hercules (1960), co-starring his then-wife, Jayne Mansfield.
While Mickey was posing in Mae West's popular revue at New York's Latin Quarter, Jayne Mansfield happened to catch the show. When her dinner companion asked her what she wanted that evening, she quipped, "I'll have a steak and the man on the left." The elderly Ms. West, never to be outdone in the vanity department, tried to break up the attention-grabbing couple but failed. They married two years later in what would become one of the most publicized marriages in Hollywood history.
Mansfield initally divorced Hargitay on 1 May 1963; she divorced him again in Juarez, Mexico. On 26 August 1964, the California Superior Court recognized the Mexican divorce pronouncement.
First recipient of the Joe Weider Lifetime Achievement Award. [1999]
His career began when Mae West noticed him on the October 1953 cover of Strength and Health Magazine and made him a member of her muscleman night-club act.
Fled Hungary in 1947 in the face of increasing Sovietization of the country.
He sued Mansfield's estate in September, 1967 for over $275,000 to support their 3 children; in their 1964 divorce decree, Mansfield agreed to pay child alimony.
Worked as a plumber and carpenter before his big break. He remodeled much of his and Jayne Mansfield's Beverly Hills mansion, The Pink Palace, including building its famous heart-shaped pool. In Nov 2002 the house was razed by it current owner.
Son Zoltan Hargitay was critically-injured by a "tame" lion, while visiting the Jungleland Zoo in the San Fernando Valley, but made a full recovery (December 1966).
Father, with Jayne Mansfield, of sons Mickey Hargitay Jr., Zoltan Hargitay, and daughter Mariska Hargitay. He also has a daughter, Tina (b. 1949), by his first wife, Mary Birge.
Former stepfather of Jayne Marie Mansfield. Grandfather of August Miklos Friedrich Hermann (Mariska's son).
Did not begin bodybuilding until arriving in the U.S. in 1947. He did much to change the concept of the art, once thought of as freakish and discouraged by athletic coaches. It was also dominated by American champions until Hargitay won his 1955 titles.
Later became a successful real estate investor and contractor.
His father was extremely athletic and brought up his sons to become athletes. The family had an acrobatic act that they performed in the large opera houses throughout Hungary.
A one-time exceptional soccer player and former European speed-skating champion.
Walked into an Indianapolis gym one day in 1947 never having lifted weights before and astounded the owner when he was capable of lifting 215 pounds over his 180 pound frame.
Performed an adagio act with Mary, his first wife, in nightclubs.
Hosted a TV exercise show in 1959.
Was given the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame Award from the Muscle Beach Historical Committee in May 2006.
In addition to his four children he was survived by brother Eddie, sister Eva, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Appeared on daughter Mariska Hargitay's TV program Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) in 2003.
Was inspired to take up bodybuilding after seeing famed bodybuilder Steve Reeves on a magazine cover. Both men later portrayed "Hercules" for Italian cinema.
Is the Godfather of nephew, actor Eddie Hargitay.
Father-in-law of Peter Hermann. Former father-in-law of Dana Hargitay.
Mickey was declared to be Jayne Mansfield's official widower, after a court ruled her divorce from him was void.
His son, Mickey Hargitay Jr., opened "Mickey Hargitay Plants", a nursery/landscaping service. [1980]
Grandfather of Brandon and Mickey Hargitay III.
Mick Hargitay, the actor who featured as Hercules, also played mad mass murderer Travis Anderson in the cult horror movie "Bloody Pit of Horror" (1965).
Personal Quotes (2)
I enjoyed my career. I never wanted to be any more than what I was, and I had fun doing it.
[Referring to Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957)] "Jayne went to California to do the film. And they said, 'You know who is going to play her boyfriend?' I said 'No, who?', and they said 'You'".

Mickey Hargitay, Mr. Universe 1955
by Jim Murray
The amateur Mr. Universe winner for 1955, Mickey Hargitay, is a man who has often been overlooked in U.S. physique contests, where posing often has as much influence on the judges and spectators as how the man actually looks under normal conditions. Abroad, however, the selection of winners is made prior to the posing exhibitions, and it is under normal conditions that Hargitay really looks his best.

For the past several years Mickey has done his final training for important contests at York, though he is a regular member of Higgins' Gym in Indianapolis, where he first tired weight training. Seeing him walking around the gym and exercising with heavy weights, regulars on the York staff always expected him to place higher in the Mr. America contest. his posing presentation was always overshadowed, however, so this year he was encouraged by John Grimek to make the trip to London where it was felt the judging system would be more to his advantage.

It was and he won the big title, placing ahead of a former Mr. America winner to boot!

Not all Hargitay's success was due to the scoring system, of course, for he had continued to train hard and improved in both shape and muscularity. Special emphasis on pressing and lateral raise movements brought out his deltoid development until he looked too broad to pass through an ordinary door.

Mickey was born in Budapest, Hungary, but came to America in 1947 and became a citizen of the United States. He is married to an Indianapolis girl and they are parents of a pretty daughter. Mickey is one of four children, two boys and two girls. He has always been athletic and while in Europe competed in ice skating. He won the Middle European championship at 500 and 1,500 meters in 1946, and placed second in the 5,000 meter race.

He began weight training under the supervision of Bob Higgins, former world featherweight lifting champion, after being inspired by pictures of John Grimek, Steve Stanko, and Steve Reeves in Strength and Health.

Hargitay is self-employed as a building contractor, but during the past year was signed up for the lead "muscleman" part in the touring Mae West show.

His exercise routine is nothing unusual. Mickey trains hard on a wide variety of exercises, and likes to use very heavy weights. An example is his two sets of 15 repetitions in the leg press with 600 pounds. He easily exercises with 400 pounds or more for full squats, and is a strong presser, having made a single barbell press with 280 pounds. He also has a strong pull, having cleaned over 300 pounds without moving his feet or squatting, but is unable to perform the competitive lifts because of an old knee injury incurred while skating.

Mickey Hargitay is a deserving winner of the Mr. Universe title and a man whose well-balanced personality will bring credit to the iron game through his dealings with the general public.

Trivia (4)
Blond and beefy Fury was one of a number of bodybuilder and physique model types who followed muscleman Steve Reeves over to Italy in the early 60s and won attention playing Herculean characters, most notably as Ursus, flexing his muscles, wearing as little as the law then allowed, in the several Italian sand-and-spear epics; when he returned to the USA he worked widely in television.
Was the subject of legendary photographer Robert Henry Mizer (as Bob Mizer) and appeared on the cover of Mizer's magazine "Physique Pictorial" (volume XI, number 4) in 1961, ostensibly promoting Fury's role in The Mighty Ursus (1961), billed as "The Mighty Ursus.".
Ed Fury's full name was Rupert Edmund Holovchik.
Ed Fury appeared as himself in an episode of the popular TV game show "The Dating Game", circa 1965 or so. He was one of the bachelors who got to select a date by asking questions of three lovely young women whom he wasn't allowed to see until making his selection.

Overview (2)
Born   May 26, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Birth Name   Richard Harrison Jr
Mini Bio (1)
Muscular, hairy-chested actor Richard Harrison was one of a slew of handsome young American pectoral hunks of the late 50s whose career in Hollywood amounted to little more than brawny bits until being lured to Italy and churning out the sword-and-sandal pictures that became an early 60s craze. Harrison would end up making over 100 films due to this lucky trek abroad.

Born on May 26, 1936 in Salt Lake City, he relocated to sunny Southern California in his late teens where his blond, tanned, chiseled good looks (he was sometimes mistaken for handsome actor Guy Madison) landed him modeling work both on runways and in beefcake magazines. It didn't take long for him to be noticed by Hollywood casting agents. At first cast in small he-man roles, usually as a virile guy in uniform, he can be obscurely seen in Jeanne Eagels (1957), his film debut starring Kim Novak, Kronos (1957) with Jeff Morrow, Too Much, Too Soon (1958) starring Dorothy Malone, South Pacific (1958), in which he can be glimpsed as a co-pilot, and Battle Flame (1959) with Scott Brady and a young Robert Blake. While filming another minor role in Master of the World (1961) he met producer James H. Nicholson's daughter, Loretta, and married her within six months. The couple produced three sons.

Frustrated at not being able to secure meatier roles in Hollywood, Richard jumped at the chance when offered the lead role in The Invincible Gladiator (1961) [The Invincible Gladiator] which was filming in Europe. He wound up settling in Italy for the next two decades. His first role, of course, immediately typed him as another Steve Reeves type and, to avoid being penned in too much as a mythological muscle man, he sought roles in routine spaghetti westerns and spy intrigue. Once Italy closed down film production after the Herculean craze had died down, he, like others, found himself unemployed. He did manage to scrape up work in Hong Kong, but a large portion of them were bottom-of-the-barrel Ninja movies.

Remarried in 1978, Harrison had already begun acting less and less while delving into producing and directing. He has retired fully now except perhaps for an occasional script writing assignment.

Maria Francesca Pomentale   (1978 - present) ( 1 child)
Loretta Nicholson   (24 March 1961 - ?) ( divorced) ( 3 children)
Trivia (11)
Son and namesake of veteran B-movie actor Richard Harrison.
Harrison was another in a long line of American hunks with super physiques who 'muscled' in on Steve Reeves' territory by traveling to Italy in the early 60s when he couldn't kickstart an American film career. Appearing in scores of sword-and-sandal spectaclaes and 'spaghetti' westerns, Harrison, unlike the others, was able to keep the momentum going later on in Hong Kong-produced kung fu movies.
Harrison was the one who suggested Clint Eastwood to Sergio Leone when the famed director was looking for a lead in "A Fistful of Dollars" in 1964. According to an interview with Charles Marquis Warren in 1981, Leone came to the set of Rawhide intending to recruit Eric Fleming for the lead in the upcoming "A Fistful of Dollars." Due to Fleming's off putting personality, Leone looked elsewhere. Warren suggested Eastwood as an alternative.
In his salad days he joined the Athletic Model Guild and became a popular poser for such physique magazines as "Body Beautiful," "Tomorrow's Man," "Physique Pictorial" and "Man Alive."
Had three sons with first wife, Loretta. One son, Sebastian Harrison, appeared in several films but quit acting and got into the computer business; another lives in San Luis Obispo; a third son is deceased. He also has a daughter by his second marriage.
In the mid-eighties, he worked in Hong Kong with director Godfrey Ho and producer Joseph Lai, making several "ninja" b-actioners. However, without his knowledge, the film-makers edited Harrison's scenes into several more movies, which were released with him as the star. Harrison found himself the unwitting and unwilling star of more than a dozen of z-grade actioners, which strongly tarnished his reputation.
Father of Richard Harrison,
Father of Robert Harrison
Father of Sebastian Harrison
Husband of Maria Francesca
Retired from the movie business. Lives in California.
Personal Quotes (1)
In my opinion, it is a death wish for an actor to be in too many B or should I say C movies. Maybe my greatest contribution to cinema was not doing Fistful of Dollars, and recommending Clint for the part.

Overview (4)
Born   May 31, 1927 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, UK
Died   July 3, 2017 in Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK  (undisclosed)
Birth Name   Joseph William Robinson Harle
Height   6' 2" (1.88 m)
Mini Bio (1)
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1927 (not 1929 as some references give) Joe Robinson came from a famous family of wrestlers. Both his father Joseph Robinson Senior and grandfather John were world champions. Following in their footsteps Joe Junior won the wrestling European Heavyweight Championship in 1952, beating Axel Cadier in London. At that time he was billed as Tiger Joe Robinson. He was also interested in acting and studied at R.A.D.A. After injuring his back wrestling in Paris, Joe decided to concentrate on acting, and after a few bit parts in films his first leading role came in the keep-fit documentary Fit as a fiddle (1952). He also played Harry "Muscles" Green in the musical Wish You Were Here (1952) on the West End stage. His most memorable film role was in A Kid For Two Farthings (1955) in which he wrestled Primo Carnera. Like most muscular actors he was invited to Rome in 1960 where he appeared in five Italian epics. At the same time, Joe and his younger brother Doug Robinson became popular stunt arrangers, particularly on the James Bond films. Joe and Doug, together with Honor Blackman co-authored the book "Honor Blackman's Book of Self-Defence" published by Andre Deutsch in 1965. Joe was also a judo champion and black belt at karate, and opened a martial arts centre in Brighton where he is now retired.
- IMDb Mini Biography By: Jim Marshall

Spouse (2)
Annie Alliston   (1961 - ?) ( separated) ( 2 children)
?   (? - ?) ( divorced) ( 2 children)
Trivia (7)
Brother of actor/stunt man Doug Robinson
Doug and Joe Robinson taught actress Honor Blackman Judo self-defense tactics for her part in The Avengers (1961). The two brothers appeared as foils in many pictures for her 1965 book 'Honor Blackman's Book of Self-Defence'.
Hit the headlines in 1998 when he fought off a gang of eight muggers single-handed. The 70-year-old former bodybuilder and Italian epic star was getting off a bus in Cape Town, South Africa when the gang struck with baseball bats and knives. 6 ft 2 ins Joe poleaxed two with flying kicks, karate-chopped another in the chest and broke the arm of a fourth. The rest fled!
Was offered the part of the Rank Gong Man, but feared being typecast in that role and declined. The job went to Ken Richmond - another wrestler.
He ran a martial arts centre in Brighton.
Children from first marriage: Joe and Lisa. From second marriage: Kate and Polly.
Of his eleven grandchildren Kyra is an IBJIF jiu-jitsu champion and Phoebe is a stunt woman.

Mini Bio (2)
Though he did not possess a Herculean acting talent by any stretch, handsome bodybuilder Steve Reeves certainly had an enviable Herculean physique, and made plenty good use of it in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960s portraying some of filmdom's most famous bronzed gods. Reeves was originally a Montana boy born on a cattle ranch in 1926. His destiny was revealed early in the game when, at the age of six months, he won his first fitness title as "Healthiest Baby of Valley County." His father Lester died in a farming accident when Steve was just a boy, and his family moved to Oakland (California). He first developed an interest in bodybuilding while in high school.

Steve joined the Army in his late teens where his job was loading boxcars and trucks. He also worked out loyally at the gym during his free time and the combination helped develop his body quite rapidly. Following Army service (he served for a time in the Pacific), he decided to pursue bodybuilding professionally. In 1946, at the age of 20, he won "Mr. Pacific Coast" in Oregon, which led to his titles of "Mr. Western America" (1947), Mr. America" (1947), "Mr. World" (1948) and, ultimately, "Mr. Universe" (1950).

With all the body-worshiping publicity he garnered, he decided to travel to New York to study and pursue acting. He subsequently returned to California...and Hollywood. There were not huge opportunities for a muscleman in Tinseltown other than providing pectoral background. Steve was, however, considered for the lead role in Cecil B. DeMille's biblical costumer Samson and Delilah (1949), but refused when told by the legendary director he would have to lose some of his musculature (about 15 lbs.). The part instead went to Victor Mature. Steve did manage to snag the role of a detective in infamous director Edward D. Wood Jr.'s Jail Bait (1954). Small parts on TV also came his way, but they too were mostly posing bits or walk-ons. To the Hollywood power players, Steve was just a body. Whether he could act or not was not a concern or selling point. Fans just wanted to see him take his shirt off.

Down on his luck, Steve's fortunes change when Italian film director Pietro Francisci saw him play Jane Powell's boyfriend in the feature film Athena (1954) and persuaded him to go overseas to star in Hercules (1958) (US title: "Hercules"). Though critics dismissed the film as "muddled mythology" while denigrating its cheapjack production values (including a poorly-dubbed sound track), the public went crazy over the sword-and-sandal epic and, in particular, Steve's marvelous beefcake heroics. He became an "overnight" star. Sequels followed, none any better or worse, with him going through the paces as a number absurdly-muscled biblical and mythological figures. An able horseman, he also performed many of his own stunts. Moreover, he paved the way for other pumped-up acting hopefuls (Ed Fury, Mark Forest, Reg Park) to seek their fame and fortune in Italy as a feature-length Samson, Ursus or Colossus. Nobody, however, came close to topping Steve in popularity.

A shoulder injury forced Steve's retirement, spending the remainder of his life promoting steroid-free bodybuilding while living on a ranch and breeding horses. The more recent bodybuilders of fame such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, both Hercules impersonators of yore, have given Steve significant credit for their respective acting successes. Married twice, Steve died in Southern California of lymphoma on May 1, 2000, at age 74.
- IMDb Mini Biography By: Gary Brumburgh / gr-home@pacbell.net

Steve Reeves is regarded by many as the greatest bodybuilder of all time for his legendary symmetrical physique, visionary bodybuilding techniques, dedication and love for the sport through which he won five bodybuilding titles between 1946 and 1950. His peak measurements were: 6'1" at 216 lbs. with 18½" arms, 52" chest, and a 29" waist, partly depicting his creation: "The Classic Physique."

Steve Reeves was born in Montana in 1926, yet by age 10 moved to Oakland, California where he first became captivated with the art of bodybuilding at age 16, placing pioneer John Grimek as his top role model. After two years of bodybuilding Steve's body weight reached 203 lbs by high school graduation, but was he then inducted into the Army. He was assigned to Company A of the 25th Division and was sent to the front lines in the Philippines where he endured to continue his bodybuilding training, becoming known as "The Shape" among his fellow GIs. After WWII had ended he was part of the occupational forces sent to Japan and was stationed there from September 1945 to September 1946. After his service ended, he entered and won several bodybuilding championships becoming: "Mr. Pacific Coast" (1946), "Mr. Western America" (1947), "Mr. America" (1947), "Mr. World" (1948) and "Mr. Universe" (1950) announcing his retirement from bodybuilding competition that very night after he won.

From that point onward Reeves set his sights on the silver screen as well as the small screen. He made several appearances on variety shows of the early-to-mid 1950s and non-starring roles during 1954 in two films: Athena (1954) starring Debbie Reynolds and Ed Wood's Jail Bait (1954). In 1957, he had been called to Italy to play the lead role Hercules in "Le Fatiche di Ercole" which was filmed during the summer and autumn of 1957 with a USA premiere in 1959. The tremendous worldwide success of "Hercules," (the USA title), led to a sequel and many other Italian epic films many based on heroes played by Reeves. These roles included Romulus, Phillipides, Captain Henry Morgan, Glaucus, and Sandokan. With 20 film/TV acting credits to his name by 1968, Steve Reeves retired from film and returned to California to live on his ranch, remaining committed to his lifelong belief in natural, drug-free bodybuilding through his writings and personal appearances. Steve Reeves has served as a great inspiration to many bodybuilders such as Sylvester Stallone and Lou Ferrigno, and millions of others the world over for all that he was: a genuine hero, a true man, an authentic gentleman, the first (and to many fans the only true) Hercules, and nothing less than the greatest bodybuilder of all time.

Spouse (2)
Aline Czartjarwicz   (24 June 1963 - 24 July 1989) ( her death)
Sandra Smith   (31 January 1955 - 4 September 1956) ( divorced)
Trade Mark (3)
Strong, statuesque frame
Usually starred in peplums, playing mythical heroes
Often stood in positions that allowed him to showcase his muscular biceps
Trivia (40)
His wife, Aline, died of complications from a stroke in 1989. He wrote "Building the Classical Physique -- The Natural Way". Through his Steve Reeves International Society Web site, he promoted supplements and powders with natural ingredients. He moved to Oakland with his family as a child and began lifting weights when he was 16 years old.
Mr. Universe 1950
Mr. America 1947.
Mentioned in the song "Sweet Transvestite" from the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
At the peak of his bodybuilding career at age 23, he was 6' 1", 200 pounds, with a chest measuring 48 inches, a 29-inch waist, and had 17 1/2-inch biceps.
Such bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and David Prowse have credited Reeves as a role model for the bodybuilding world.
Often confused with, and is not related to, George Reeves, who played Superman on TV in the 1950s. While working on a studio next to the set where the Superman series was filmed, producers once threatened to fire George after an argument and replace him with Steve.
In 1949 director Cecil B. DeMille considered (and came very close) casting Reeves as Samson in Samson and Delilah (1949) after Burt Lancaster proved unavailable. Although DeMille liked Reeves and thought he was perfect for the role, a dispute between Reeves and the studio over his physique forced DeMille to recast the role of Samson with Victor Mature. After becoming popular in the late 1950s and 1960s, Reeves turned down the roles of James Bond in Dr. No (1962) and the Man With No Name in A Fistful of Dollars (1964).
He loved horses and was a great rider himself. Italian producers later found that to be an advantage, since Reeves usually did his own stunts in his films and they didn't have to hire a horse riding double for him. After retiring from films due to a shoulder injury, Reeves bought a ranch and took up breeding horses professionally.
He was a friend of "Tarzan" actor Gordon Scott, and recommended him for the role of Remus in Duel of the Titans (1961). The producers originally wanted Reeves to play both Romulus and Remus through some doubling, but Reeves convinced them that it would be more effective to have another actor playing Remus.
His voice was dubbed in his Italian epics. The only films where his real voice is heard are Jail Bait (1954) and Athena (1954).
His entire bodybuilding career consisted of 8 contests.
His mother was a nutritionist.
He survived numerous life-threatening experiences as a child, including being hit by a car and dragged, being thrown from a horse and sleeping through an earthquake as a child in Montana. When he couldn't be accounted for, family members found him sound asleep, his bedroom teetering on the brink of a three-story fall.
Took him 4 weeks to get into contest shape for his Mr. America victory.
Was of Welsh, Irish, English and German descent
Served in the Philippines during WWII, contracted malaria, and served his remaining time under Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan.
Prior to its release, Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) was being referred to by some writers as the first "Steve Reeves type" movie in decades. It had also been written that Scott was amiss in not getting Reeves to at least do a cameo. Sadly, Reeves died on the very day that "Gladiator" premiered..
While filming The Last Days of Pompeii (1959) (a remake of The Last Days of Pompeii (1935)), the chariot he was driving struck a tree and he dislocated his shoulder. This put an end to his more intense exercise routines and caused problems in the following years.
He was reportedly diagnosed with lymphoma only six weeks prior to this death.
He was played by Michael J. Nelson in the episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988) that showed his film Hercules Unchained (1959).
He often criticized the use of steroids in bodybuilding because he felt that it undermined the health value and the challenge of bodybuilding as a sport. He once remarked, "Body builders used to come in all shapes and sizes. Now they all look like Arnold [Schwarzenegger]."
Almost paradoxically, Reeves' impressive physique prompted filmmakers to put him into a variety of "bondage" situations. Two such situations are cited in the book: "Lash! The Hundred Greatest Scenes of Men Being Whipped in the Movies." Ranking 7th is Reeves' flogging in Duel of the Titans (1961) and ranking 24th is his flogging in The White Warrior (1959).
Though proud of his work as Hercules, he was always disappointed that his other films did not receive much recognition. He once remarked "I only did two Hercules films, but everyone seems to think I did ten."
Took up power walking (which combined swinging hand held weights in both hands while walking) in order to compensate for the damage done to him by his shoulder injury.
He was the undisputed king of the European produced sword and sandal/mythological muscleman epics. Although he became an international sensation, the core of his film career lasted only 5 years (1958-1963)and a staggering 15 epic productions during that period. Afterward, he made another "Sandokan" feature and attempted a film in the next big Italian film craze, the spaghetti western, before retiring from the screen.
Is credited by Sylvester Stallone for inspiring Stallone to work out and build up his body and later became friends with Reeves after he became famous.
Was offered a third Hercules film after "Hercules Unchained" but declined in favor of pursuing other roles.
Summer 1948, at Cannes, France, won the title of "Le plus bel homme du monde". This was documented in a French b&w short film with cinematography by Raymond Clunie and Georges Zaidler, with René Charrois as assistant camera operator and Jacques Verillon as technical consultant.
Although he was regarded as the "king of the muscle man movies," after doing two movies as Hercules ("Hercules" (1958) and "Hercules Unchained" (1959)), Steve Reeves turned down further Hercules movies and similar roles for other sword and sandal epics that had more substance to their stories.
Was crowned 1947 AAU Mr. America. Contest was held in Chicago, Illinois, June 29, 1947 at Lane Tech H.S., in conjunction with the 1947 AAU Senior National Weightlifting Championships (Olympic Style). In it Steve won a very close decision over 2nd place winner, future Pro Wrestler, Eric Pederson.
Steve Reeves's body was cremated and his ashes were specifically scattered in Montana, the state where he was born.
For his competition days, he is credited with being the first bodybuilder to go to a salon to have his hair styled as part of his "total presentation.".
He was signed by producer George Pal to star as Doc Savage in the motion picture that would eventually become "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze" (1975). A prolonged writer's strike caused Reeves and the original director to drop out of the project.
He used his G.I. Bill benefits to attend the California Chiropractic College in San Francisco.
His appearance in Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s "Jail Bait" (1954) earned him his Screen Actor's Guild card.
It was reportedly an agent that suggested to him to consider acting.
In the heyday of his film career, he became the highest paid actor in Europe.
At the height of his European produced spectacles, he was reportedly the top boxoffice draw in over 25 countries.
By 1960 Reeves was being offered more Italian epics than he had time to make. Variety announced on 27 April 1960 that Reeves was being offered Judas, a forthcoming epic to be produced by Giuseppe Amato for Riama Film, (the same producer and company of La Dolce Vita (1960)). Like other projects, nothing more was ever heard of Judas.
Personal Quotes (1)
Filmmaking in Europe was a little different from working in the United States. There's a scene in 'Hercules' where I'm in chains -- they looked like steel, but they were actually made of wood -- and I had to swing these chains at my supposed enemies who were advancing towards me. Well, I didn't want to really strike someone so I kind of held back with my motions. The director yelled, 'Swing those chains! Swing them hard!' I said, 'I don't want to hurt someone.' And the director yelled back, 'If they don't get hurt, they don't get paid!'
