Growing up, you get hit overhead with the whole compassion for the homeless spiel. That they are people down on their luck who need help. But as an adult, this has been the reality from what I've seen. Whether it's drug addiction or mental illness, I don't give a fuck. I'm supposed to look at someone like this and still see a human being? No.

Believe it or not some homeless people have kids who are obviously also homeless. Most of these kids are not homeless by choice. They are homeless because their parents are homeless. Blame the parents, don't blame the kids.

I'd prefer they not. What makes you think I am a humanitarian? I live in what some of you believe is a white privileged enclave. Although my neighborhood isn't gated, the occasional homeless vagabond at the freeway on-ramp/off-ramp is politely escorted out of town by West Linn's finest. It is almost unimaginable that a homeless person or family will show up at my door asking to use one of the three toilets in my home.

Honestly, I have no idea how I would react if that were to happen. My guess is that I would not let them in. I may be a soggy old queer, but I'm not stupid. I might suggest they try the house across the street from me where two policewomen live.

Anyway, I think I have the longest and steepest driveway on the street. My family and I have three dogs who furiously bark whenever anyone gets within 200 ft. of the house. If I were a homeless person looking for a toilet to poop in, this is not the house I would pick.

Dignity Village is a membership-based community in NE Portland, providing shelter off the streets for 60 people a night since 2000. The current location of this camp is on the outskirts of the city on public land (a city owned recycling center). Prior to being in this spot, the city tried to set these few homeless folks up in other areas throughout the city which were closer to the services these they need, including transportation and places where they can get work.

I am not defending homelessness. It's a chronic problem and it will probably continue to get worse. There is no single reason why people become homeless, but it is safe to say that it doesn't happen by accident. So yeah, I get putting the responsibility for their unfortunate predicament on them because somewhere along the way to homelessness, the adults made bad choices. The kids are just unlucky to be born to people who are lousy parents.
