Listening to the best of right now and I'm enjoying it :-\
-
"Jump" was about a time when it made good sense to go ahead and jump off a building. Have you listened to that song? I mean really listened to it?
-
VH is classic.
-
There a band that is misrated, not underrated, just not appreciated to what they are.
Their not a gnr, they're more of a genisis if anything else.
-
jump is awesome... right now is amazing... belting out "Can't stop loving you" to my cat right now...
my cat is by far my biggest fan ;D
-
Not to get all cliche, but I don't care for Hagars version.
-
moved on now... downloaded 15gigs of tunes overnight...
onto depeche mode... trying to figure out why anyone would like them

Strangelove is an awesome song.
They aren't anywhere near Echo and the Bunnymen, but they were very good.

The first six (yes, even Diver Down), all with Roth, of course, are MONSTER examples of perfection in American hard rock/heavy metal.
And Edward is arguably the most important electric guitarist, ever. Only Hendrix can challenge such a declaration.
There was a time when "the mighty Van Halen" truly was. Just a beast of wattage and brute genius and excitement.

What kinda thread title is this....VH is 62% Dutch, plus I fucked Eddy's niece.

Fair Warning is their best record, not even up for discussion
-
i never got into them.... I could learn slash guitar parts in high school on a $200 epiphone SG knock off. I couldn't touch EVH. insane skills and sounds.

i never really did either... liking them now though

First album historical. Pop rock after that. Even tho I like some of their later stuff. Dreams with Hagar is a great song.
-
Halen is the only band that was ever able to produce remakes which were better than the originals, just like this one
-
Fair Warning is their best record, not even up for discussion
C'mon, Groink. I love Fair Warning, but better than their debut?
-
Best with Diamond Dave! Van Haggar OK!
-
C'mon, Groink. I love Fair Warning, but better than their debut?
I would say so. by far there most serious, focused record. no covers, no dumb "hot for teacher" crap

VH was pretty much a Led Zep clone with an extra American feel and extra virtuosity. Less creativity and eclecticism, lower songwriting skills of course. First album is great (Little Dreamer is a great song). Second is ok but half of it is of no interest. "Fair Warining" is a really good one and underrated for that matter. I can do without everything else they recorded..
-
'this is home,,see a gun is real easy, this is mean streets ,,in this desperate part of town,,turns u from hunter into hunted,,we're gonna tear somebody down..

Not evn close to Zep clone...Ed's biggest influence was Clapton.Zeps explored all types of music and VH always stayed in hard rock/rock/blues.

No contradiction here. What I meant is that like a lot of American hard rock bands, VH´s style was heavily rooted in Zep 2 and mostly that album which defined a large pan of hard rock/ heavy metal to come. As I aid, Zep was much more creative and Zep 3/4, Houses and Physical (also Presence which is underrated) are way above anything VH achieved. But Eddie himself acknowledge many times his debt to Page (he even said the solo from heartbreaker was what gave hime the idea of Eruption) and to guys like Ronnie Montrose, Leslie West

No matter what y'all say...Tattoo is a great song, both the music and the lyrics. The singing is not what DLR used to be, that's too bad.....but it's still ok.
-
hot for teacher. roadhouse biker bar drunken brawl memories lol

Sammy hagar is technically a far superior singer than DLR, he just is a dork, and writes bullshit lyrics.
Not that Roth wrote beethoven's 9th, but he had flair

My favorite song of Van Halen :
-Ain't talking about love + Eruption intro ( from their album "The best of VH vol.1)
(Just listen the first 5:30 minutes) 8)

Yes, Unchained is a great song.
Yes. The 30-second opening is aces. If that doesn't get you going, nothing will.

EARLY VAN HALEN!!!! 78-83. IMHO
-
Loved VH until Van Hager, but still liked a few songs.
BUT, I admit when sometimes even when I hear their classic stuff, I know think Ross' screams and dialogue during the songs are pretty lame.

I listened to VH for the Music...Roth was a clown. he was charismatic and a joker, but he was a weak singer and didn't write lyrics with any substance.
The Hagar years were the same only different IMO...better singer, but zero personality or lyrical content.,,and he looked like a toad
They both had their moments, but early VH rules because Roth was just a cooler dude, and Eddie was a beast in his younger years. he was a riff monster and his solos were unreal, and he had such a sick tone. But after a while every swinging dick sounded like him and it was played out.
which sucks for him because aside from the hammering on stuff, Eddie was an amazing, creative guitar player with a jillion musical ideas running through his head..... he was a victim of his own sound because he was so influential that every guitar player on the planet tried to imitate him, and after a while they got pretty good at it

Your'e mentioning Van Halen in the same sentence as NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. Thats fucking Blasphemy!
-
Not gay... Just a band in their era... A great band though.
Tons of great tunes here.
Hot for Teacher... Panama... Eruption... Ain't talkin' 'bout Love.
The Hagar stuff was not bad, but he couldn't do spin kicks and shit so he just didn't have as much going on... Lots of great tunes on OU812 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge though.
EVH and how he found ways to make interesting sounds is definitely a Guitar God.

TAPE, I have no idea what the lyrics to JUMP refer to! Can you interpret?
JUMP ...
I get up, and nothing gets me down.
You got it tough. I've seen the toughest around.
And I know, baby, just how you feel.
You've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real
Oh, can't you see me standing here?
I've got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh, can't you see what I mean?
Ah, I might as well jump. Jump!
Might as well jump.
Go ahead, jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/v/van+halen/jump_20142804.html ]
Aaa-ohh Hey you! Who said that?
Baby how you been?
You say you don't know, you won't know
Until you begin.
So can't you see me standing here?
I've got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh, can't you see what I mean?
I might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump.
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump. Jump!
(Guitar solo)
(Keyboard solo)
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump.
Get it and jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump.
Jump!
Jump!
Jump!
Jump!
-
stunt, i think those lyrics refer to him trying to get noticed by and/or impress some female

Mocking of a jumper who is just carving for attention and not jumping

You should be fucking enjoying it. Roth-era VH is truly some of the best.
As for the Depeche Mode....well, I like them but can't totally stomach their entire catalog. Music for the Masses, Violator and maybe Construction Time Again are their best.
