Title: Hidden Gems - Films all getbiggers need to watch
Post by: BigCyp on September 24, 2014, 04:49:30 AM
I hate wasting time watching a shitty movie, with a poor script/bad directing/unrealistic scenes

How about a thread to recommend films that you were very impressed with (not the obvious, Godfather etc )

1. Mystic River (Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Lawrence Fishburne) - This film is mustard, only film to win Best Actor and Best Supporting since Ben Hur (1959)

2. The place beyond the pines (Gosling, Brad Cooper, Eva Mendes) - The writing is amazing, and several plots work together for an epic ending - almost like watching 2 movies at once.

3. The perks of being a wallflower (Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Logan Lerman) - Very teenage angsty, but I loved this film - probably in my top 10.

Watch these, if you're sick of the usual mindless shit.

Will watch those two this week cheers lads, keep em coming.

When me and the Mrs have put the kids to bed and it's 'pick a film time' it is the most tense 5 minutes of my life. How do I say "No the only reason you like those kind of films is because you are a stupid tart" with love?  ;D

Usually I resort to "I watched that one before babe, find another one"

"When did you watch 50 first dates?"

"Ermm I think my nan had it on at Christmas"  ;D

I thought place beyond the pines was gash.
I am finding a lot of TV shows are surpassing anything they are doing with film (True Detective, Sporanos, The Wire etc)

Lol, just shows everyone is different I guess  ;D I thought it made a nice change.

True with the T.V. shows bringing up their game.

Perfect example - started watching The Wire with the Mrs, she said "This is rubbish", that 100% certifies it as worth watching in my experience!

LOL my missus said same about True Detective.
Seriously if you havent got onto it, do yourself a favour and get it now. Its easily the best thing I have seen this year.
Mcconaughey and Harrelson are just amazing and its proper dark.

The Wire is slow and i get why people wouldnt like it but it needs time.
Was not keen on Boardwalk Empire. Watched 2 seasons but just wasnt for me.

Game of Thrones is another one worth watching.

Yep luckily I got into Game of Throne's only a couple of months ago, so I had all of the seasons available to download on Sky and then I borrowed a mates Box set for some - it was epic being able to watch a couple every night  8)

A Prophet - despite being french, probably the best gangster film since Casino.

The Boarderlands - an ace British horror.

Not really a hidden gem, but watched Copland the other day and it is a massively underrated film.

Kill list was possibly the stupidest film I have sen, a plot so full of holes it was laughable, why were all his hits thanking him?
It was never explained.

This x infinity.

Wifey roped me into the first season, and it was so much better than 'vampire diaries' (oh brother) that I gave it a go.

After that it was the same episode over and over again with slightly different lines  ::)

Movie Info
I SAW THE DEVIL is a shockingly violent and stunningly accomplished tale of murder and revenge from Korean genre master KIM Jee-woon .
Oldboy's CHOI Min-sik plays Kyung-chul, a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. The embodiment of pure evil, he has committed horrifying and senselessly cruel serial murders on defenseless victims, successfully eluding capture by the police. On a freezing, snowy night, his latest victim is the beautiful Ju-yeon, daughter of a retired police chief and pregnant fiancée of elite special agent Soo-hyun . Obsessed with revenge, Soo-hyun decides to track down the murderer, even if doing so means becoming a monster himself. And when he finds Kyung-chul, turning him in to the authorities is the last thing on his mind. The lines between good and evil fall away in this diabolically twisted game of cat and mouse. Pushing the concept of revenge to its most extreme limits, KIM Jee-woon brilliantly transcends the police procedural and serial killer genres in surprising and thrilling new ways. -- (C) Magnet

I just wrote 'I saw the Devil' on my hand in biro to remind me to watch it tonight on Amazon

I didn't consider the pitfalls of having this phrase in captials on my palm, during meetings

Off to the toilet to wash it off, and set an electronic reminder on my iphone in tribute of the 21st century.

This is the story of how one modest Hong Kong action film became an International success and spawned a World-wide fascination for the Martial Arts film. This film had a cast of unknown Chinese actors, was dubbed by voice artists speaking in "strangled mid-Atlantic accents" and had a music soundtrack that was best described as eclectic. Audiences ate it up! So what was the hidden ingredient that made this chop suey snack so appetising?  Kung Fu!!!

The movie going public in the US and Europe had never seen anything like it before. Here in this (relatively) simple tale of revenge were sights and sounds that dazzled the senses. People leapt into the air to deliver bone-crushing kicks with deadly accuracy, coupled with whooshes and cracks as the blows sought out their targets. In the short time of 105 minutes a new cult had been born, the cult of the Kung Fu movie.

So sit back and unleash your Five Fingers Of Death because the 'King Boxer' is here! [released 1972]
