When C.K. first did it I was a little peeved. I attribute that reaction being taught growing up that we must respect the flag and the country. We said the pledge every morning in grade school, and disrespect for flag and country was like being an atheist.. unheard of and horrific.
After giving it some thought and considering I myself think our government has long ago stopped really caring about us, but only their party and themselves (I'm sure there are exceptions, this is just my overall view) I can see the point of it. There are some injustices out there. Change rarely comes without speaking out. While I may not agree with him on what injustices there are (Michael Brown was not an injustice) I can see the point of "Why should I stand to pay respect to a country/government that doesn't really give a crap about me?" The anthem itself, although only sung in part, can be deemed offensive if you're aware of the entire song. So I kind of get it.
But.. his salary is paid for by the owner of the team. The owner belongs to an organization that depends on fans to make money. I would not be allowed to protest or push my political agenda at my job on my employers time, so I can also see why the NFL might prohibit it in the future and I would certainly understand that.

Lets be realistic - more would be Michael Brown than would be Albert Einstein given the demographics of the NFL. Same as if you went to MIT and predicted the ratio of future professional sports players to rocket scientists.

Jerry Jones National Anthem Stance Puts Cowboys in MNF Spotlight

During Monday Night Football's national anthem, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his team will be in the spotlight after Jones said he does not approve of sitting or kneeling during the anthem.
ESPN does not normally televise the anthem for Monday Night Football but plans to do so tonight amid the national news story sparked by President Donald Trump's controversial comments in Alabama on Friday about athletes who protest by sitting or taking a knee during "The Star-Spangled Banner."
The protests also will be featured on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” and it is expected the commentators during the game will discuss the controversy, The Wrap reported.
Jones, who donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, said previously in multiple interviews that he thinks his players should stand to respect the flag.
No Cowboys player has protested during the national anthem up to this point, but the team has not made any announcement about what they plan to do Monday night.
Trump’s comments that NFL owners should fire players who don’t stand for the anthem prompted about 130 players to protest during Sunday's NFL games, including all but one of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Arizona Cardinals, the Cowboys' opponent tonight, have similarly not announced whether they plan to protest during the national anthem.
Many Twitter commenters felt Jones was right to expect players to stand for the anthem.

The First Amendment does not protect National Football League players from being fired.
The Constitution’s freedom of expression applies only to government action, not private businesses.
The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech.” It says nothing about private action or reaction. Thus, it is a public misconception that free speech or expression extends to the workplace. It does not, as the U.S. Supreme Court has consistently ruled.
Any business, as long as it is not connected to the government, is entitled to fire an employee for his or her speech and conduct within the workplace. The NFL and its teams are privately owned. They are not constrained by the principles of the First Amendment.
The Player Contract
But beyond the Constitution, contract law allows any NFL team to terminate any player for behavior it deems to be injurious to the organization or the league.
Every professional player must sign the standard NFL player contract. In it, the player promises as follows:
“To conduct himself on and off the field with appropriate recognition of the fact that the success of professional football depends largely on public respect for and approval of those associated with the game” (Paragraph 2). “ If player has engaged in personal conduct reasonably judged by the Club to adversely affect or reflect on the Club, then the Club may terminate this contract” (Paragraph 11).
This language makes it clear that a team will decide whether a player’s personal conduct adversely affects the club. Since it is a subjective standard, NFL owners have enormous latitude and discretion to fire a player for reasons of conduct.
But that is not all. The collective bargaining agreement negotiated by the players’ union and approved by the players themselves authorizes suspension or termination “for conduct detrimental to the integrity of, or public confidence in, the game of professional football” (Article 46).
The players agreed in writing to conduct themselves with respect and refrain from conduct which is detrimental to the game. There is nothing in either of these contracts which gives players a right to a political or social protest while in uniform at the commencement of a game. Indeed, the league strictly enforces the wearing of patches and other symbols on player uniforms which are intended to promote causes.
Hence, the only question is whether kneeling during the national anthem as the stadium pays respect to the American flag constitutes detrimental conduct. It does.
Various polls show that a vast majority of Americans believe the player protests to be unpatriotic. Fans seem disgusted and many have decided to simply stop watching. The NFL television audience has dropped off. If it continues, it could cost the teams hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising revenue, not to mention seats at games.
But even if statistics do not reliably show that offended fans are damaging a team’s finances, it is not necessary. If an NFL owner considers the players’ conduct to be disrespectful such that it reflects negatively on the club, this is enough for termination under the two contracts cited above. And, again, the First Amendment does not provide protection.
There are some who alleged that firing players would constitute racial discrimination. This misunderstands the law. It is true that racial discrimination in the workplace is forbidden everywhere in America under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But firing a player for his conduct is different than firing him for the color of his skin.
Owners, The Commissioner, Players
Don’t expect NFL owners to do the right thing by firing players. They’ve been coddling them for years, paying lavish salaries and tolerating misbehavior that is now endemic in football. Along the way, owners have become rich beyond imagination. The players run the teams, not the owners.
Until owners see incontrovertible proof that their bank accounts are suffering from diminished audiences and revenues, they will continue to permit players to insult millions of Americans who believe that respecting the flag and the national anthem is a gesture of honor and decency. It recognizes the immense sacrifices made so that all of us can live and prosper in liberty.
And don’t expect NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to do anything other than make the wrong choice. His tenure has been notable only for a series of bad decisions and lining his own pockets with tens of millions of dollars.
As for the players, most of them do not seem to understand what the flag and the national anthem truly represent. They are not symbols of law enforcement in places like Baltimore or St. Louis where cases of race-related excessive force have become divisive, but something much larger and more meaningful.
Standing while putting our hands over our hearts and paying homage to these two great symbols, one visual and one musical, signifies that all of us are thankful to be here in this great land of democracy. It expresses our mutual respect and gratitude to the generations of Americans in uniform who fought and died so that we may live in freedom.
Disrespecting the flag is the equivalent of desecrating it. We should all be offended, regardless of our differences.

As President Donald Trump battled with athletes over their protests during the national anthem, some National Football League teams decided to stay in the locker room while the “Star-Spangled Banner” played on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans all opted to come out to the field after the anthem was over. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the decision was made by the team “not to be disrespectful to the anthem but to remove ourselves from this circumstance.”
Even though the teams tried to take themselves out of the debate, many people on social media called for them to be punished by the NFL.
Trump said Friday that NFL players who do not stand for the national anthem should be fired and called on the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell, to make the players stand.

What do the NFL rules state about the anthem?
The NFL’s 2017 rule book does not include guidelines – or any mention of – the national anthem. It does stipulate that both teams need to be on the field at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled kickoff at the start of the game.

“There will be no discipline handed down this week,” spokesman Joe Lockhart told reporters Monday. He added that the NFL is not considering discontinuing playing the national anthem ahead of games.
“Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the National Anthem,” the NFL said in 2016 when former San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick garnered national attention for kneeling in protest when the anthem was played.

Trump calls NFL kneeling 'disgraceful,' disrespectful to veterans

President Trump doubled down Tuesday on his criticism of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, calling the protests “disgraceful” and blatantly disrespectful to veterans who fought for flag and country.
“I don’t think you can disrespect our country, our flag, our national anthem,” Trump said at a Rose Garden press conference.
The president, in response to criticism in the media, insisted he was not preoccupied with the controversy – and is focusing instead on the federal government’s hurricane response in the Caribbean.
But explaining his decision to speak out on the anthem protests, Trump cited all those who have died or been injured fighting for the United States.
“They were fighting for our country, they were fighting for our flag, they were fighting for our national anthem,” he said, referring to injured soldiers he’s visited at Walter Reed. “For people to disrespect that by kneeling during the playing of our national anthem I think is disgraceful.”
Echoing an earlier tweet, he said the NFL should not allow players to kneel, saying he was “ashamed” by the protests.
Meanwhile, Trump said “we are totally focused” on storm recovery.
After announcing earlier in the day he’ll head to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico next Tuesday, he said in the Rose Garden that he’ll also visit the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“We’re doing everything in our power to help the hard-hit people in both places,” Trump said. “… We will get through this.”
The president spoke during a joint press conference with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
His comments on the NFL mark the latest turn in a rapid-fire debate over anthem protesters that kicked up last Friday when Trump said football players disrespecting the flag should be “fired.” Specifically, he said NFL owners should push to “get that son of a b---- off the field.”
The president’s remarks touched off an escalating standoff with team owners and players alike, with hundreds kneeling or locking arms or even sitting out the anthem entirely since Friday.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump called on the NFL to change its own rules to prohibit kneeling during the national anthem, while swiping at the Dallas Cowboys after the team -- along with owner Jerry Jones -- kneeled before the anthem ahead of their game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night.
Trump said there is "great anger" in the stands over these spectacles.
The president covered a wide range of other topics in Tuesday’s press conference, including North Korea.
Following a new series of threats from Pyongyang, Trump warned that the U.S. is “totally prepared” for a military option, though that is not the preferred course.
“If we take that option, it will be devastating … for North Korea. That’s called a military option, if we have to take it, we will,” he said.
Of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump said, “He’s saying things that should never, ever be said.”
Trump was meeting with Rajoy, meanwhile, to discuss several common concerns including trade and the fight against terrorism.
Spain last month was the victim of attacks that killed 16 people in the tourist haven of Barcelona and a nearby town. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Trump said Tuesday they are "very, very unified in the fight."
Trump also mentioned his desire to renegotiate trade deals the U.S. has with other countries, but suggested that isn't the case with Spain.
On trade, Trump says he's had a "good nine months" with Spain.

NFL anthem controversy: Does the left ever want to win elections again?

For all of Donald Trump’s often baffling social commentary, he could not have asked for better opponents in an ongoing culture war that has the political left crying foul. On everything from statues, to sports protests, the left seems eager to somehow try to out-do Trump’s bombastic absurdity. Everyone from activists to journalists and Democrat Party members have decided that moderation is all but DOA and the cultural pendulum which swung far left for eight years is swinging back right with equal velocity.
The national anthem protests by NFL players this weekend is just the latest example of overreach (a word only seen in media to describe the right’s response to Democrat scandals) by a side of the political aisle that has been drummed down to their largest governing minority since World War II. Trump’s comments in Alabama resurrected a mostly dormant discussion about NFL players kneeling in protest over perceived police brutality that started with 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick last year, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
The kneel down gesture was always puzzling to me, as the national anthem isn’t played at sporting events to honor police officers. It’s in large part to honor men and women serving in the nation’s armed forces (more on that in a minute) which give us the freedom to gather in stadiums or around our televisions every Sunday and scream at grown men chasing each other with a ball.
My question to the Democrats (and media) is simple: What voters in that big chunk of the country turned red do you plan to win back on a platform of kneeling for the national anthem, revoking due process, removing monuments of our founders, or backing Kim Jong Un in a nuclear showdown?
I don’t need to debate the merits or the wisdom behind Kaepernick’s actions.There’s been too much of that already. But what is up for debate is the wisdom of the political left throwing in with a gesture that still, to this day and despite what you see on cable news and social media, remains largely unpopular with the voting public. In 2016, a Quinnipac poll found that only 38 percent of those supported NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem. A Reuters poll found that 72 percent found the protest to be unpatriotic but also that 64 percent agreed there should be no punishment or fine.
Thanks to Trump’s reinvigoration of the debate, it didn’t take long for pundits on the left to start suggesting that taking a knee during the national anthem is now a direct protest of Trump himself. D.C. Bureau chief for Mother Jones, David Corn outright stated “The kneel will now become a sign of opposition to Trump,” effectively hijacking the gesture from black activists. Washington Post social justice reporter Wesley Lowery called on colleagues to demand a reasoning from players who chose not to kneel. No word yet if Lowery chose to ask Pittsburgh Steelers tackle and former Army Ranger and Bronze Star recipient Alejandro Villanueva why he chose to stand for the anthem in the tunnel, the only player from the team to do so. Villanueva’s jersey sales have now skyrocketed in only a day. Jon Schwarz from the left leaning site The Intercept wrote “The National Anthem is a Celebration of Slavery”
The left has chosen to make kneeling for the national anthem now a referendum on Trump himself. A larger problem for them, and the NFL in general, is they picked this fight on a day meant to honor Gold Star mothers.
Americans can differentiate between the man in the Oval Office and the country he represents. They can acknowledge problems with community policing, or the commander-in-chief's tweets while also honoring men and women in uniform overseas and more to the point, they know the politicization of the sport they used to love didn’t start with Donald Trump.
This is not a fight they will win, but like removing monuments of the founders , journalists (including Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg and CNN morning show host Chris Cuomo) excusing Antifa under the guise they are no different than the Greatest Generation storming Normandy on D-Day, endorsing North Korea’s Kim Jong Un over Trump, or writing off ‘jihad’ as a noble struggle, they continue to pick unpopular battles in culture and against a large chunk of the country they lost with Hillary Clinton in 2016.
On top of all this, Democrats also seem to be embracing such noble causes as coming out against due process for Americans accused of crimes, such as sexual assault. In response to Education Secretary Betsy Devos tossing Obama era Title IX practices on college campuses, Senator Diane Feinstein tweeted, “Sec. DeVos is putting rights of the accused above those of sexual assault victims. Absolutely unconscionable.” Beyond apparently never bothering to read "To Kill a Mockingbird," Feinstein is demanding her party stand up against the right of due process, the very thing, as it turns out, Kaepernick was protesting.
My question to the Democrats (and media) is simple: What voters in that big chunk of the country turned red do you plan to win back on a platform of kneeling for the national anthem, revoking due process, removing monuments of our founders, sympathizing with jihad, glorifying property-destroying (and journalist-punching) thugs or backing Kim Jong Un in a nuclear showdown? The more the left has ramped up its cultural war, the more their governing power has diminished. Who cares if the Affordable Care Act wiped them from the electoral map, as long as Jimmy Kimmel gets his sick burns in.
Donald Trump’s election should have been a giant wake up call to both the media and the left that the causes they care about and blast out with their bylines are not the issues Americans care about. They may view Donald Trump’s twitter commentary as beneath the office of the presidency, but they can forgive a lot when the other party is demanding they bend the knee.

The point I'm trying to make dicklicker is that you're very quick to call people who support Trump dumb but you don't want to acknowledge that a large part of your base, the people who voted the same way you did, is an abomination.

An Army recruit starts off with a salary under $20,000. Thousands of active duty military personnel are on food stamps. Millions of veterans rely on them to feed their families and themselves.
That’s how we treat the best of us. Here’s how we treat the worst of us.
An NFL rookie’s minimum salary is $465,000. And the majority of NFL players are usually bankrupt a few years after retirement because they blew through most of their money. Dozens of NFL players are arrested every year on charges ranging from murder to rape to animal abuse.
2017 was a banner year for the NFL with three times as many arrests as last year.
Along with the usual drunk driving and disorderly conduct arrests, there were 7 arrests for assault/battery, 6 for drugs and 5 for domestic violence.
The Seattle Seahawks announced that they weren’t going to “participate in the national anthem” because of the “injustice that has plagued people of color in this country”. While they lost that game, they are one of the top ranked teams in arrests. Alongside the Los Angeles Rams, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets, all of whom showed some solidarity with the anti-American protests, these top NFL criminal teams have racked up arrests for domestic violence, drugs, DUI and assault and battery.
It’s no wonder that so many of the NFL’s millionaire scumbags are eager to join Colin Kaepernick’s protests against the justice system by degrading our anthem.
It’s because they’re criminals.
And it’s no wonder that the NFL stands behind its thugs. If a team can shrug at abusing women, what’s a little anti-American tantrum by a prize property that makes them millions of dollars?
The only question is why are the rest of us subsidizing it?
NFL teams loot millions from taxpayers to fund their stadiums. The Seahawks have a point about injustice. And the injustice is that taxpayers had to spend $390 million on their stadium.
Who will let Washington taxpayers take a knee and opt out of being exploited by the Seahawks?
Ten New Orleans Saints players sat out the anthem. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton expressed pride in the players who rejected the United States of America. The Saints not only enjoy a stadium paid for by a billion in taxpayer money in a city with one of the highest poverty rates in the country, but are exempt from sales tax. And receive millions every year in “inducement payments” to stay put.
Sweetheart deals like these are not uncommon. The NFL comes with a pass on property taxes (those are for little people) and taxes in general. Until 2015, the NFL was a non-profit. "Professional football leagues" was actually inserted into the Internal Revenue Code to provide a special non-profit status. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell got paid $44 million in one year. That made him the highest paid non-profit exec in the country.
The entire NFL is an illegal trust. It’s a monopoly that was illegally legalized by Congress.
That monopoly allows the NFL and its teams to cash in on television licensing and team gear. After the NFL uses its illegal monopoly to rip off broadcasters, ESPN rips off cable subscribers.
ESPN pays the NFL almost $2 billion a year. Even if you don’t watch ESPN, you’re paying $9 a month for it because of yet another illegal monopoly. If you subscribe to cable or live in a major city, the odds are good that your pocket is being picked by the millionaire racists “taking a knee” against America.
But the monopolies are dying.
ESPN is bleeding subscribers. The NFL’s anti-American turn is alienating fans. And cable is collapsing.
The NFL is built on government taking money from people and giving it to the industry. Its leftward tilt isn’t an accident. It’s a calculated move. Who are the folks most likely to bail out an industry? They’re on the left. Not the right. If your monopoly is dying, it’s time to go left and hate America.
Anthem bashing is popular with the left. And it’s very popular with the social justice bloggers who increasingly dominate sports journalism, and not just on ESPN. Hating America will score points with the left. It’ll buy the NFL more protectionism from the media and the 2020 Democrats.
The only question is why do we need the NFL?
Once upon a time there was a football free market. Multiple leagues competed with each other. And the NFL was just one of many. The NFL-AFL merger created a monster monopoly that has worked to crush any independent league through its control over broadcasting and venues.
That's what happened with the United States Football League which won an anti-trust court case against the NFL, but was forced under anyway.
The man at the center of the fight against the NFL was New Jersey Generals owner Donald Trump.
The illegal monopoly that created the NFL was the work of Senator Russell Long, the son of radical criminal Dem kingpin Huey Long, who illegally took over his father’s Senate seat (previously held by his mother) and spent almost four decades in the Senate with no qualification except his last name.
The NFL got a monopoly in exchange for New Orleans getting a franchise.
Congressman Hale Boggs, the corrupt Louisiana Dem boss who went to war with the FBI, got it through in the House by appealing, “The Republicans are out to get me. I need this to save me."
And Boggs held things up until he got assurances from the NFL commissioner that the franchise was in.
That’s the corrupt Democrat deal that created the NFL monopoly. Of course the NFL thinks the justice system is unfair. It was created by a crime and it’s full of criminals.
Before the anthem protests, the NFL was just one of the corrupt legacies of Democrat rule. It’s a reminder of the fact that social justice politics, whether it’s Obama’s “You Didn’t Build That” or Huey Long’s “Share Our Wealth”, is nothing more than organized thievery from the working class.
But the NFL is no longer just a corrupt monopoly. Instead it’s becoming a radical anti-American organization that uses its taxpayer-subsidized stadiums and monopoly broadcasting rights to spread hatred toward this country and disrespect to the soldiers who fought and died for it.
America could have tolerated the NFL’s corrupt thievery. But there’s no way Americans should be subsidizing this diseased leftover of Democrat corruption when it spews hate at the United States.
It’s time for the NFL’s anti-trust exemption to go the way of Ma Bell.
Break up the corrupt Democrat monopoly of the NFL and demolish the barriers to the formation of independent leagues by taking on the NFL, ESPN and its broadcasting partners in crime.
It’s time for the NFL to take a knee and for the free market to rise.
Football must become an American sport again.

NFL football is the most popular American sport, so popular that only two days separate the end of one weekend on Monday Night Football and the beginning of the next on Thursday Night Football. The extension from formerly just a Sunday afternoon sport has meant the National Football League has become a giant money machine for players, owners and commissioners.
But the NFL has made what may ultimately become the fatal error of becoming an outward political entity. The NFL is now a full-bore politically liberal organization that — literally — bans dissent it disagrees with but allows protests its fan base disagrees with. It’s the classic modern liberal misreading of the American people.
The media establishment laughingly now wants to blame President Trump for the division in the country regarding the NFL, as though this all started last week. Trump certainly threw some gas on a fire, but all of us football fans have been watching with frustration the existing fire that was burning a divide in America.
The NFL, led by Commissioner Roger Goodell, could have doused the initial flames with a tiny tea cup of water. But it did not because it is now driven by a clearly manifested liberal ideology — and there is no better way to divide Americans and destroy a popular pastime than to do what it is doing.
Here are four reasons the NFL — from players to Commissioner Goodell — is dead wrong to be kneeling during the National Anthem to protest police killing black men.
1. NFL is overtly hypocritical in speech it bans Remember, protesting is political speech. It is protected by 1st Amendment from government control and everyone cherishes that right. But it is not protected by private enterprises, such as sports leagues or businesses. The hypocrisy is clearly seen in what the NFL actually has stopped.
The NFL banned the Dallas Cowboys from wearing a decal last year on their helmets honoring the murdered Dallas police officers. The NFL banned players from wearing socks with Sept. 11 on them in memorial of those killed in the 9-11 Islamist terrorist attacks. The NFL forced Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III to turn his Christian T-Shirt inside out for a press conference. Let’s not pretend this is free speech or protest. This is some free speech and protest. The NFL is more than happy to come down like a sledgehammer on speech that might, in the most general way, be considered right of center politically. But it then allows speech that might broadly be considered left of center.
This makes the NFL leadership a classic modern liberal organization acting in political ways to further an agenda with no adherence whatsoever to principles. They are closer to the anti-free speech codes on college campuses than they are to their fan base. This represents an ongoing problem for the League.
2. NFL is killing its ratings Viewership and attendance at NFL games continues to decline as the protests continue to escalate. In fact, they cratered this past weekend in a way that ought to be shocking to League leadership.
The Associate Press reports:
“Through three weeks, viewership for national telecasts of NFL games is down 11 percent this season compared to 2016, the Nielsen company said on Tuesday. Nielsen said the games averaged 17.63 million viewers for the first three weeks of last season, and have dipped to 15.65 million this year.”
That is a drop of two million viewers year over year. The hugely popular Sunday Night Football game dropped 8 percent compared to just the previous week, when it was already down from last year.
3. NFL is killing its loyal fan base In response to the entire Pittsburgh Steelers’ team (minus one Army Ranger veteran) staying off the field for the National Anthem, a wave of long-time, hardcore Steelers fans have been burning Steelers jackets, hats and other gear. One fan since 1966 burned all of his Steelers’ stuff.
Season-ticket holders around the country burned their expensive and once-beloved tickets.
And somewhat eye-openingly, New England Patriots’ fans loudly booed players kneeling for the National Anthem. The boos just cascaded down onto the field in waves.
It’s one thing for fans from a blue-collar, rust-belt flyover city like Pittsburgh to do this. But in elite, liberal coastal Boston? Yes. Because football fans are on average to the right of center politically, and certainly when it comes to patriotism and national symbols.
The NFL seems unaware of this.
One Steelers player now famously stood in the tunnel with his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Starting offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva was an Army Ranger before entering the NFL, serving three tours of duty in Afghanistan.
Last season, he made comments critical of San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose anthem protest lit the fire for other players to follow suit. “I don’t know if the most effective way is to sit down during the national anthem with a country that’s providing you freedom, providing you $16 million a year … when there are black minorities that are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan for less than $20,000 a year,” Villanueva told ESPN.
By last Monday afternoon, the largely unknown offensive lineman’s jersey was the best-selling jersey in the NFL, beating out Tom Brady and other household names.
That is fans openly communicating in clear terms to the League that they do not support what it is allowing. The NFL apparently has forgotten that there is no NFL without the fans. But the fans have not forgotten. And they are putting the League on notice.
4. Last but not least, the actual issue being protested is a myth We are told that there is an epidemic of cops killing unarmed black men. This storyline is the genesis for Black Lives Matter, but more to the point, it is the initial issue driving the kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem.
But it’s not true.
The Wall Street Journal’s Jason Riley, a black columnist, explains through facts and data — not anecdotes and perceptions — what most of the media refuses to.
“In New York City, home to the nation’s largest police force, officer-involved shootings have fallen by more than 90% since the early 1970s, and national trends have been similarly dramatic.
“A Justice Department report published in 2001 noted that between 1976 and 1998, the teen and adult population grew by 47 million people, and the number of police officers increased by more than 200,000, yet the number of people killed by police “did not generally rise” over this period. Moreover, a ‘growing percentage of felons killed by police are white, and a declining percentage are black.” A separate Justice study released in 2011 also reported a decline in killings by police, between 1980 and 2008. And according to figures from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate at which police kill blacks has fallen by 70% since the late 1960s.”
Heather MacDonald, of the Manhattan Institute, is a foremost researcher on the issue and reports stunning facts opposite of the media/Democrat narrative. For instance, 12 percent of white and Hispanic homicide victims are killed by cops. But only 4 percent of black homicide victims are killed by cops. A police officer is 18 times more likely to be killed by an armed black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer. You can see many more of her stats at this Prager U video.
These are facts, not emotions or perceptions or Youtube videos. It’s understood that Democrats do not use contextual facts that actually tell the full truth because dividing by race has been a political ploy for three generations now. The media, essentially Democrats with press credentials, also doesn’t report contextual facts. Social media is social media.
So here’s another fun fact that can be used even on Twitter: A black person is more likely to be hit by lightning than to be killed by a cop in the United States of America. That’s how rare it is.
Yet because of social media and unconscionable hyper media coverage of individual events, blacks now think that if they are pulled over by a cop there’s a good chance they will be shot. This is the alleged “social injustice” that has brought NFL players to disrespect the flag, the National Anthem and the country that has given them freedom and wealth and hope.
NFL fans understand this, at least at the gut level. If the NFL doesn’t get its act in line with its fan base — which represents an awful lot of Americans — it will stop being the most popular sport in the nation. And it will do so for no sound reason but partisan politics.

NFL Sacked! Businesses Cut Ties With NFL, Let Fans Cancel Over Protests

NFL sponsors are feeling pressure to respond after more than 200 players, coaches and team owners knelt in protest during the anthem on the weekend of Sept. 23. While most NFL sponsors have so far not ended their sponsorships, at least three organizations have reacted and others are being pressured.
One company, the Phil Long Ford dealership in Denver, announced it would not renew its sponsorship of Denver Broncos defensive star Von Miller after he knelt during the National Anthem on Sept. 24, Yahoo sports reported.
Louisiana based Schilling Distributing Company chose to pull all Bud Light products featuring NFL and New Orleans Saints messaging, local station KJFY News said on Sept. 26. DirectTV meanwhile is reportedly giving refunds to customers who wanted to cancel their Sunday Ticket NFL subscriptions because of the protests.
Phil Long Ford, founded by WWII veteran Phil Long, released a statement saying Miller was a “good person,” but that “when we bring in celebrities to represent us we run the risk of being misrepresented.”
The dealership also reaffirmed its support for a veteran service center founded by its principal owner and concluded, “This would be a great time for our community to show support for our military community by supporting this cause or others that continue to serve them after they serve us.”
Schilling Distributing, a veteran owned company, said in a statement, “while Bud Light has been an official partner of the NFL and New Orleans Saints for years, there is no need for us to ask our retailer partners to promote such controversial organizations to help sell product.” Schilling is instead offering retail items that have statements like “Proud to Serve Those Who Serve” and “This Bud’s for You, Louisiana.”
Other organizations linked to the NFL are also receiving pushback after the protests.
DirectTV is reportedly allowing some users to cancel their Sunday Ticket NFL subscriptions “if they cite players’ national anthem protest as the reason,” The Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 26.
So far DirectTV has yet to release an official explanation and “DirecTV service representatives contacted by The Wall Street Journal had different understandings of the policy.” Some thought full refunds were available, while others said the refunds were prorated for the remainder of the season. Still others said the rules had not changed and no refunds were available.
Multiple users contacted The Journal directly to claim they had received refunds and others said the same thing on Twitter.

Viewers are also canceling their subscriptions to the NFL-owned RedZone channel “which provides live action and scoring from every game on Sundays” because of the protests, The Journal said.
USAA members have been using petitions, USAA forums and Twitter to demand the financial institution pull its NFL sponsorship. According to Tweets and statements from USAA representatives, it does not intent to end its sponsorship.

“Our purpose in becoming a league sponsor was to honor and appreciate the military community, and that will continue to be our focus,” a USAA representative wrote on USAA’s Member Community forum.
“Please also know that we’ve contacted the NFL to emphasize the significance of the national anthem and the vital position it plays in acknowledging our country, as well as the men and women who have fought to safeguard our liberties. We have no plans to end our role as the Official Military Appreciation Sponsor of the NFL.”
Other NFL sponsors including Under Armour, Ford, Nike, Hyundai, Anheuser-Busch and Bose have all issued statements supporting both the American flag and the players’ right to free speech, Yahoo Finance reported on Sept. 25. None have withdrawn their support.
NFL sponsors are in a bind because fans both “in favor of and against the protests are sharing the same list of NFL sponsors, calling for a total boycott,” according to a Sept. 25 report by Bloomberg. “Hashtags #BoycottNFLSponsors and #PunchThemInTheWallet are circulating on both pro-Trump and pro-player social media.”
JPMorgan derivatives strategist Shawn Quigg told Bloomberg Markets on Sept. 27 that investors should “bet against CBS Corp. stock ahead of this weekend’s NFL broadcasts” due to the boycott encouraged by President Donald Trump.
Media Research Center President Brent Bozell has also urged fans to “turn off the NFL” on Oct. 1 and to commit to “- ne week without football to support our flag.”

The NFL ratings dropped substantially after a record number of players protested the national anthem on Sunday, and polls have even shown that the majority of Americans believe that players should stand for the national anthem. During the Patriots versus Texans game, it was blatantly obvious what fans thought of the players kneeling for the national anthem.
As “The Star-Spangled Banner” played, fans noticed 17 Patriots players kneeling. Then the stadium of approximately 60,000 began booing and screaming, “Stand up!” Watch:
But now, Sporting News is reporting that it spoke with a “behind-the-scenes TV staffer” and found that the NFL was so desperate to hold onto its fans watching at home that they told their cameramen not to show the crowd during the national anthem.
Sporting News writes:
One behind-the-scenes TV staffer at another stadium told Sporting News that camera operators were ordered to avoid crowd shots in case they showed fans counterprotesting the protests.
NBC Sports, CBS Sports, Fox Sports and ESPN pay billions each year to televise live NFL games. The league saw this weekend's unprecedented anthem coverage as a golden opportunity to demonstrate unity among players, coaches and owners — and opposition to Trump's comments.
If crowd shots were indeed purposely avoided, it was a wise business decision by the networks not to bite the hand that feeds them their most popular programming, but a weak move from a journalistic standpoint. By covering one of the most significant days in NFL history with rose-colored glasses, the networks cheated viewers. We got an incomplete picture of what really happened in stadiums on Sunday and Monday.
Despite the networks allegedly avoiding crowd shots, many people caught onto the fans' reaction and took to social media:

Florida Sheriff’s Office Will not Escort Miami Dolphins Until They Stand for National Anthem

The Miami Dolphins are also part of the unpatriotic movement started by Colin Kaepernick that involves refusing to stand at attention for the national anthem. However, they are all starting to feel the consequences of their actions, with the Florida sheriffs office announcing that they will not be escorting the Dolphins to their games unless they stop with the disrespectful behavior. The local Miami police union supported the decision of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and will not be doing any escorting either, reports The Sports Hall.
President of the International Union of Police Associations, Jeffrey Bell said, “I respect their right to have freedom of speech. However, in certain organizations and certain jobs you give up that right of your freedom of speech temporary while you serve that job or while you play in an NFL game.”
After four of their players protested the national anthem, the Dolphins organization released a statement in which they mentioned that while they encourage all players to stand it is not mandatory and is personal choice:
“We encourage all members of our organization to stand at attention during the national anthem out of respect and appreciation for the freedoms we are afforded as Americans. We also recognize that it’s an individual’s right to reflect during the anthem in different ways. We respect these liberties and appreciate the sacrifices that everyone has made for our country, especially on this day of remembrance. We hope today’s events will continue a respectful and thoughtful dialogue in our community on unity, inclusiveness and togetherness.”
The police association is well within their rights, and yet the liberals criticize their decision while at the same time they are praising the athletes for exercising their freedom of speech. If they advocate for freedom of speech and freedom of expression, that freedom has to extend to everyone.
The reality is, other than these athletes getting their fifteen minutes of fame, nothing productive is coming of their protests.

Colin Kaepernick started out taking a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality, but his activism has since expanded to encompass a wide range of leftist causes, including a group named after a convicted cop-killer.
The Colin Kaepernick Foundation donated in April $25,000 to Assata’s Daughters, a Chicago “direct action” resistance organization honoring Assata Shakur, who escaped prison and fled to Cuba after being found guilty in the 1973 murder of Officer Werner Foerster.
The grant includes $2,500 for CopWatch, a program that trains volunteers to follow and video police, and $15,000 for teen training, part of the group’s commitment to “develop and train young people, ages 4-19, in the Black queer feminist tradition and in the spirit of Assata.”
Apparently Mr. Kaepernick is also a fan: He retweeted a July 16 message wishing Shakur a happy birthday.

Operators of two of the largest U.S. ticket marketplaces say they are seeing declines in orders for NFL games amid festering controversy over the national anthem.
NFL ticket sales at TickPick slumped 17.9 percent this week compared with the prior week, their steepest decline since 2014, while sales at TicketCity plunged 31 percent. For pro football games in September, ticket sales at TicketCity are down 16 percent from a year ago. TickPick's NFL sales rose this month, but by the smallest margin since 2015. The vendors' data reflect tickets sold in the secondary market, as opposed to direct sales from NFL teams.
The slump in ticket sales underscores the pressure facing the NFL over the anthem protests, which were started last year by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The league's television ratings also appear affected, with viewership down 11 percent so far this season and some fans are calling for a boycott of the NFL's corporate partners.
"There are people who are saying that this is my form of entertainment and I don't want politics in my entertainment," said TickPick co-CEO Brett Goldberg, emphasizing that he doesn't personally share that viewpoint, in an interview.
A new poll by CBS News found that Americans are unhappy with both the protests during the anthem and President Trump's comments on the issue.
Views hinge on partisanship, but also shift with how Americans view the intentions, not just the actions, of the players and president. Most Americans say that the players' intention is to try to call attention to racism. However, Republicans also feel the players are trying to disrespect the flag and the military, too – and strongly disapprove.

The co-host of FN1’s Undisputed, former NFL player Shannon Sharpe, went on a hateful rant on Friday in regards to the anti-American NFL National Anthem protests, angrily arguing that the American flag is no big deal anyway, that it’s just a “piece of cloth” that “nobody fights for” and that it’s a symbol that’s somehow “racist” to boot.
“The flag, you see, to a lot of people, symbols, patriotism but what does that symbol actually mean?” Sharpe asked stunned co-host Skip Bayless. “What does — what does – okay — you keep telling me that the flag means so much and it’s opportunity and freedom and liberty. Okay. Can you honestly say that everybody in America has freedom and liberties and opportunity?”
“No,” Bayless calmly answered.
“Well, if you can’t can’t answer that, then we have a problem and we would like to have it addressed,” Sharpe shouted.
Shannon Sharpe, a former NFL tight end who spent all but two of his 12 seasons with the Denver Broncos, continued his hateful rant against the flag:
“And stop trying to sweep it under the rug. But, see, as long as you paint that narrative, oh, it’s the Anthem, I can’t — no — anybody that does something to the Anthem — well, we know what the anthem was originally written for and who it was written by, okay? The flag, okay? We understand what the flag? What does it represent?

1. The ever weakening of the liberal mainstream media and the rise of alternative media. What was the old saying? The media was worth 20 to 30 points come election night? They do not control the narrative anymore. They are picked apart systematically and mocked daily.
2. Doubling and tripling down on divisive identity politics. Plays well to the base of the Democrat Party on the coasts but is already doing irreparable damage to the heart of the country. We have already seen the effects of this with the 1,000 seats lost under Obama. The midwest and southern democrat is going the way of the dodo. It is even getting harder for them to win in the The Rust Belt.
3. As far as Trump's legislative success, years 3 and 4 of his presidency will be far more successful than that the first 2. His bills pass rather easily in The House but stall and ultimately have failed in a razor thin Republican Senate with John McCain who hates him and 2 or 3 others who seem dug in to oppose him as well. When you extend that lead from 52 to 58-62, it becomes much easier to pass these bills.
This shit is so basic but looking back I suppose that it is why myself and a few others were able to call the Trump win months out in 2016 and everybody else was shocked wondering what the hell happened come election night. They simply do not have that level of critical thinking.

On a day that ended in gunfire and tragedy at a country music festival in Las Vegas, Sunday also saw continuing controversy with NFL players kneeling before games, more standing, locking arms, and some sitting during the national anthem. Several members of the Seattle Seahawks chose to sit before Sunday Night Football kicked off last night while the Indianapolis Colts decided to link arms in a show of unity for equality and racial justice. At the end of the game the result saw the Colts crushed as the Seahawks scored a blowout 46-18 win.
Whether it was politics or the final score or a mix of both, it was no win for NBC and the NHLNFL[sic] last night.

CNN: NFL Owners Have 'Research Clearly Showing' Trump 'Is Right' About Impact...

Is there a method to President Donald Trump's “madness,” as many of his most ardent supporters have stated from the beginning?
Most recent case in point: Trump said NFL ratings are down and continue to slide, because of growing fan displeasure with national anthem protests:

Meanwhile, liberal media outlets and others, including Vox, have blamed the ratings slide on everything but the protests.
Just one problem.
As CNN anchor John King reported Sunday, team owners are now in possession of data backing Trump's claim — at least to a substantial degree:
"NFL owners so far siding with their players for their right to free speech, but they're also keeping close tabs on the financial impact and the public relations impact of this confrontation.
I'm told the owners have research clearly showing the president is right when he says the anthem protests are one factor in a TV ratings drop."
As is always the case, the formula is simple: If business owners don't pay attention to the bottom line, they ultimately go out of business:
“And since the president weighed in, the owners are now dealing with a surge in ticket holder requests for refunds. Other sports leagues are watching this quite closely.”
Let's get back to that “method to the madness” reference.
Being the savvy businessman Trump is, is it reasonable to suggest maybe, just maybe, when he poured gas all over the national anthem protest, he believed the resulting firestorm would cause players to double down on their protest, further alienating fans?
Is it also reasonable to suggest Trump figured ratings declines associated with growing fan discontent would ultimately cause not only advertisers to balk but force owners to ultimately consider their respective bottom lines, as well?
If Trump has taught both supporters and detractors anything over the past 28 months, it's that he often defies his critics. Gleefully so. Every time.

Even the most accurate prognosticator (Nate Silver) totally whiffed. From my recollection, only two polls consistently showed Trump winning the race: the LA Times and IBD. Nate Silver and Larry Sabado (who also missed pretty badly) both said we should discount the LA Times as an outlier. Definitely the most surprising and amazing political feat of my lifetime (taking the title from Obama).

Honestly, I remember getting a certain feeling while reading a post (your post, idb) shortly before the day, saying 'I think he may win this thing' or something like that. For some reason it sort of hit me that it was true.

Not it wasn't. Nobody on this board outside of poly saw this coming. That is true of almost everyone on the political landscape too. Even the most accurate prognosticator (Nate Silver) totally whiffed. From my recollection, only two polls consistently showed Trump winning the race: the LA Times and IBD. Nate Silver and Larry Sabado (who also missed pretty badly) both said we should discount the LA Times as an outlier. Definitely the most surprising and amazing political feat of my lifetime (taking the title from Obama).

I understand most of what you're saying, except the part about the outcome being known, when you don't know what the prognosticators and pollsters said. Those folks are the ones who help us understand what the projected outcome will be. They are often right (especially Silver), but not this time.
You are right about all of the unconventional things Trump and Sanders did. It's even more extreme than what you say. Trump spent half as much as Clinton. He ran against Clinton and the nearly all of the MSM. I posted an article a little while back that showed something like 50 out 52 newspapers endorsed Clinton. There is no way someone who said the things Trump did, spent as little money, and had such a stacked deck against him should have won.
If you're saying everyone knew Trump would be the nominee and would be elected president, I don't think the evidence supports that conclusion. Unless you mean something else?

The National Football League is a glass house that was cracking well before Donald Trump's criticism of players who refuse to stand during the national anthem.
The NFL earned an estimated $14 billion last year. But 500-channel television, internet live streaming, video games and all sorts of other televised sports have combined to threaten the league's monopoly on weekend entertainment -- even before recent controversies.
It has become a fad for many players not to stand for the anthem. But it is also becoming a trend for irate fans not to watch the NFL at all.
Multimillionaire young players, mostly in their 20s, often cannot quite explain why they have become so furious at emblems of the country in which they are doing so well.
Their gripes at best seem episodic and are often without supporting data. Are they mad at supposedly inordinate police brutality toward black citizens, or racial disparity caused by bias, or the perceived vulgarity of President Donald Trump?
The result, fairly or not, is that a lot of viewers do not understand why so many young, rich players show such disrespect for their country -- and, by extension, insult their far poorer fans, whose loyal support has helped pay their salaries.
ESPN talking heads and network TV analysts do not help. They often pose as social justice warriors, but they are ill-equipped to offer sermons to fans on their ethical shortcomings that have nothing to do with football.
In truth, the NFL's hard-core fan base is not comprised of bicoastal hipsters. Rather, the league's fan base is formed mostly by red-state Americans -- and many of them are becoming increasingly turned off by the culture of professional football.

I agree it's a sham. I agree the real issue is black-on-black crime and that the notion that racist white cops are gunning down innocent unarmed black men is a lie.
What I don't agree with is making these sweeping statements about an entire race. That's just pure ignorance. We don't label all black people criminals because a disproportionate number commit crime, just like we don't label all white males as pedophiles because an overwhelming number of pedophiles are white. You evaluate each person on their merit.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday any player who disrespects the flag will not play.
Jones’ comments, the strongest made on the anthem controversy, came after he was asked about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis early after several San Francisco 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem.
"I know this, we cannot ... in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag," he said following the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers. "We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we're clear."
Jones and the rest of the team kneeled arm-in-arm before the national anthem before a game against the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago, days after President Trump reignited the anthem-protest controversy.
Dallas players have stood on the sideline, many with hands over their hearts, during the anthem ever since former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling last season in protest of what he believed were instances of racial injustice in the U.S.
Jones said showing respect for the flag and the anthem is more important to him than any potential issues of team unity.

"There is no room here if it comes between looking non-supportive of our players and of each other or creating the impression that you're disrespecting the flag, we will be non-supportive of each other," Jones said. "We will not disrespect the flag."
Jones said he wasn't aware of whether any of his players had raised a fist at the end of the anthem before the Green Bay game.
"I don't know about that," Jones said. "But if there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play. OK? Understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won't play. Period."
Additionally, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said he changed his view on how his team should handle the national anthem. Ross said because Trump made standing for the national anthem about “patriotism,” he evolved the way he looks at the protest, according to the Miami Herald.
Ross now wants all of the Dolphins players to stand for the anthem. Three Dolphins players – Kenny Stills, Julian Thomas and Michael Thomas – remained off to the sideline during the anthem Sunday.
The NFL has said the game operations manual distributed to teams includes a reference to players standing for the anthem, but that it's a policy and not a rule. The league has said it doesn't plan to punish players over anthem protests.
"The league in mind should absolutely take the rules we've got on the books and make sure that we do not give the perception that we're disrespecting the flag," Jones said.

Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross, who had three players — wide receiver Kenny Stills, safety Michael Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas — kneel during the national anthem prior to last week’s game said Sunday he wished they would stand for the anthem. The trio ended up standing in the tunnel during the anthem and running onto the field afterward.
Coach Adam Gase implemented a policy Sunday requiring players to stand for the national anthem. Those who don’t wish to stand must stay in the locker room or in the tunnel.
Ross, who spoke about 90 minutes before the Dolphins’ 16-10 victory over Tennessee and the national anthem, said President Donald Trump has changed the focus of anthem conversation from social injustice issues to patriotism, so it’s better now for the players to stand.
“He’s changed that whole paradigm of what protest is,” Ross during his CommUnity Tailgate gathering at Hard Rock Stadium before Sunday’s home opener against Tennessee.
“And I think it’s incumbent upon the players today, because of how the public is looking at it, to really stand and really salute the flag.”
Ross said “whenever you’re dealing with the flag you’re dealing with something different” but he remains supportive of what Dolphins players did last season when Stills, Michael Thomas, former running back Arian Foster and former linebacker Jelani Jenkins chose to kneel during the national anthem.

Disgruntled fans, low ratings, and very public fights have lowered the public opinion of the NFL to record lows. Now the owners in the league are attempting to take control.

“I’m not condemning anybody or criticizing anybody. Respect the game. Play the game,” Ditka said. “When you want to protest, protest when the game is over. Football has been so good to these guys. Enjoy it. Have fun with it.
“I don’t think it’s the stage for protests, I’m sorry.”
The Super Bowl-winning coach, who is a supporter of President Trump, added that if he still were coaching, he would not tolerate his players protesting during the national anthem.

Farmer Gene Hanson of Edgeley, North Dakota has a message for the NFL: “We stand for the National Anthem.”
The 77-year-old Midwesterner plowed that phrase into his bean crops - a massive message spanning the length of two football fields - in response to the controversial protest undertaken by some NFL players who've begun kneeling during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
“I go with [President] Trump on this one,” Hanson told Fox News on Tuesday. “If you want to protest, that’s not the place to do it.”
He added: “A lot of people died over our flag. We’re able to voice our opinion because of it. If you’re going to show respect for anything, do it for the national anthem.”

Hanson has a track record of designing and digging massive messages – many political – using his old Massey tractor on his 850-acre farm.
And Hanson doesn’t use GPS or any technology for the work, which he says “works out pretty good in a harvested bean field.”
Then he flies his two-seater plane, and if his design passes the test, he snaps a pic with a Cannon camera and posts it on Facebook. He said he's only been unsuccessful twice.

Hanson told Fox News he got his “We Stand for the National Anthem” message right on the second try. During the first attempt, he was interrupted by a passerby with only two letters to go. He soon relocated to another section of the field.
Hanson said he initially wanted to add an addendum -- “We kneel at the cross” -- but the plan was foiled by the first frost of the season.
Hanson said, weather permitting, he plans to add that phrase soon.
Hanson and his wife, Darlene, are Lutherans and attend church regularly. He also describes himself as a Republican and Trump supporter, and he had the chance to get a picture of the president when Trump came to North Dakota for a tax reform speech in September.
“I was 20 feet away from him,” Hanson said. “It was a good meeting and the president stayed on script.”
Hanson said he believes Trump is trying to do well, but faces a “continuous battle” in Washington, D.C. And Hanson said he's doing all he can to send his support from his Edgeley farm.
Some of his previous messages include “Drain the Swamp,” “Blue Lives Matter,” “Feel the Bern,” “GOP, get your act together,” and “Vote Trump.”
He said his Prince symbol, plowed after the singer passed away, was one of his most popular for fans all over the world, but he caught a lot of flak for his “Never Hillary” message.
“Most responses have been positive, though,” Hanson said.

Condoleezza Rice: NFL Players Must Voice Concerns Without 'Alienating' People
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said this afternoon that NFL players should voice their concerns about racial injustice without "alienating" people.
"We do need to get off this controversy," Rice told Dana Perino on "The Daily Briefing."
"Whatever the players were trying to do in drawing attention to these issues, it's gone another way now in that people have stopped listening to each other."
Rice said the players' goal should be to bring as many people to their side as possible and explain what injustices they are protesting.
"We have this birth defect of slavery. We have had a long history or racial injustice and trying to come to terms with it," she acknowledged.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told owners today that the league will consider a rule change requiring players to stand for the anthem.
The letter came out after Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones became the first owner to suggest repercussions for protesting the anthem.
Rice said she hopes Goodell's statement will help the league and the country move past the controversy.
Rice, passionate about football and once rumored to be a top choice for NFL commissioner, said she - like many NFL fans - wants to see Old Glory respected,
"I personally believe very strongly that the American flag stands for the millions of people who have sacrificed over the years," she concluded, adding it's a "symbol of the fact that we have greater freedoms" than any other country.

I've taken over divisions where my choice was 1. Fix the problems and make the section better, or 2. Do nothing and move to a different assignment as soon as possible. I'd say those who do donate resources and effort are showing they believe in that cause (whatever it may be) which means they certainly haven't given up on it (that cause).

Hours after President Trump issued a tweet early Tuesday questioning the current tax subsidies received by the NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to team owners instructing them that “all players should stand for the national anthem.”
Goodell’s move comes more than a year too late. It comes after the NFL has lost 20% of its audience since Colin Kaepernick began his attention-seeking kneel-down during the anthem at the behest of his marxist girlfriend on August 26, 2016. It comes after Goodell and the owners stood silently by as Kaepernick’s silly sideshow act slowly gained imitators as the 2016 season went along, and after the dam literally broke and disrespecting the flag and anthem became a league-wide fad this season.
Goodell’s move comes after the NFL’s reputation as “America’s Game” had been tossed into the trash can. His memo comes after a month of acrimony between the league and the President, who has repeatedly urged the league to force the players to show a little respect for the country that has made them so fabulously wealthy and famous, and following Sunday’s walk-out of a game between the Colts and 49ers by Vice President Mike Pence.
The sad part of all of this is that it all could have been avoided had Goodell, on August 27, 2016, made a phone call to the idiot owner of the San Francisco 49ers, and instructed him to bench a single player for a single game if he would not stand for the national anthem. But Goodell didn’t have the sense to do that. Because of that, we have for the last 13 months witnessed what is without a doubt the greatest self-inflicted wound in the history of organized sports, a wound from which the NFL may never really recover. Mr. Wilbon, co-host of “Pardon the Interruption,” took issue with Mr. Jones’ stance that players who do not stand for the national anthem before football games will not play.
“And the word that comes to my mind―and I don’t care who doesn’t like me using it―is plantation,” Mr. Wilbon said on Monday’s show. “The players are here to serve me, and they will do what I want. No matter how much I pay them, they are not equal to me. That’s what this says to me and mine.”
ESPN declined to comment on Mr. Wilbon’s remarks.
The take-a-knee protests roiling the NFL escalated once again on Sunday, when Vice President Mike Pence walked out of the Indianapolis Colts-San Francisco 49ers game, after 23 members of 49ers did not stand for the anthem.
Later that day, after his team’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, Mr. Jones told reporters that players who refuse to stand the anthem will be benched.

Citing America’s history of slavery, Kline and Hayes justify their actions by claiming that their "blackness" supersedes their identity as Americans.

Back in the early 1980s, some conservatives began raising the alarm about the rising tide of anti-Americanism in primary and secondary public schools. "History" textbooks became "social studies" textbooks. Teaching the incredible story of America's founding was given short shrift, inspiring stories of individual Americans were omitted in favor of highlighting our many faults and teaching a form of "social history" that concentrated on those who were oppressed in the past.
There is nothing wrong with teaching the complex and problematic history of America's past. But not at the expense of the truth. In fact, the amazing story of our founding and growth as a bastion of individual liberty and democracy was deliberately buried to inculcate a false consciousness about America to which few could feel pride.
After nearly 50 years of indocrtination, those efforts have borne bitter fruit.

Dear Every Single American,
Every. Single. American. Including President Trump, Colin Kaepernick, and my brothers in arms overseas who are wondering, "what in the hell is going on back there?" I'm sitting in the same chair, in the same apartment that I sat in almost a year ago when I wrote an open letter to Colin Kaepernick. I was hurt when I saw him sitting on the bench during the national anthem, but I'm much more hurt now. Not by him, not by where we're at now with the protests, but by us.
Simply put, it seems like we just hate each other; and that is far more painful to me than any protest, or demonstration, or rally, or tweet. We're told to pick a side, there's a line drawn in the sand "are you with us or against us?" It's just not who we are, or at least who we're supposed to be; we're supposed to be better than that, we're Americans. This doesn't even seem to be about right or wrong, but more about right or left.
Today it feels like this national divide isn't even really about the anthem, or the flag, or kneeling, or sitting, or fists in the air. It's not about President Donald Trump, it's not about Colin Kaepernick, it's not about the military, or even police brutality. It feels like it's about winning. That's what makes America so great, our sheer competitiveness. We're winners, and we won't quit until victory is ours.
We see it in sports everyday, we "live and die" by the outcomes of our teams. That desire to win at all cost is costing us greatly now among our neighbors. This winning mentality seems to have spilled over into an obsession with being right and not willing to admit that maybe, just maybe we were wrong. We repeat mantras to ourselves like, "no matter what I will never ever surrender."

Earlier this week I sat down with a group of five Combat Arms and Special Operations Veterans. The round table discussed our individual feelings on the flag, the anthem, and the players who knelt when it was played. We all had very different takes, but what surprised me most at the end of the discussion was that we all agreed on one thing. Colin Kaepernick and President Trump should be the ones uniting our country together. Wait...what? I know it sounds crazy, but maybe that's exactly what we need to see. Maybe that's how we start to heal. Two men sit in a room and talk, simple as that.
That's how it all started with Colin and I, neither of us knew that kneeling would be the result of our conversation. Colin wanted to sit, I wanted him to stand, and so we found a common ground on a knee alongside his teammates. I believe that progress and real change happens in this world when you reach across the divide, you build a bridge, you swallow your pride, you open your mind, you embrace what you don't understand, and ultimately you surrender.
Now I don't pretend to speak for everyone who fought overseas, many veterans rightfully disagree with my position. But I do feel that I echo the sentiments of most war fighters when I say that what we hope for more than anything right now in America is unity. To deploy overseas, train, live with, fight alongside, and ultimately defend foreigners that you have little in common with is truly a challenging task. But returning home to a country that is so divided, so judgmental, and so hateful of one another is almost as difficult to deal with as burying a fallen comrade. In fact we're still losing our brothers in arms overseas right now and it's hardly mentioned it in the media; but that's OK, we don't risk our lives and sacrifice so much for fanfare or recognition. It's not at all why we do what we do. We do what we do because you are worth it, because we love you.
I would love for those two leaders to have that conversation, but more than anything I just want us to love one another again. One great thing about freedom is that you get to choose everyday how you treat your neighbor. This IS the best country in the world, but we can always do better. I'm laying it all out there because I have to, I swore to defend this land and its people, and I will die trying. I know some people will hate this (we love to hate things these days), and I'll get called a disgrace to the Green Beret once again. But I don't care, the United States means more to me than any of that.

Over the past year I've come across veterans from various walks of life. We may actually be the most diverse sub-culture in the America. Since I myself am a Green Beret, I want to share with you a couple of messages that were sent to me from men in my former unit. One of them is white, and one of them is black:
"Hey brother. At first I was with you on the Kaepernick issue. However, I just stood in formation while one of our brothers was pulled off a plane with our nation's flag draped over the coffin. I had to fight back tears as I saw the pain in the eyes of Staff Sergeant T's wife and family. While I would like to sit here and tell you that I rose above it all, I have to be honest. My heart filled with rage. Rage for anyone who takes for granted the ideals and symbols that we fight and die for."
"Hey Brother, this is J. I spent nearly 18 years in 10th Special Forces Group and wish I had an opportunity to meet a brother like yourself. I just want to say I appreciate your views on this national anthem and flag issue. I love our country, but at the same time I have to take the time to tell my sons to act a certain way out of fear for their lives when dealing with police officers. Most of my neighbors and friends here in MD are law enforcement personnel and will tell you they also have to act a certain way to avoid confrontation and situations that normally don't occur for those that are not of color. Not all officers are bad, the majority I believe are good and poor training is attributed to some of these issues we hear of. I really just want to thank you for your taking the time out to understand and convincing him to take a knee and not sit out on what we have fought for. God Bless You Bro!"

So please, no more lines in the sand, not at home, not among our people. No more choosing sides, no more "for or against." I believe our Veterans will be called upon to lead the way in healing the world and solving its problems; right now our country needs that more than I can remember. A group of Georgia cheerleaders say they'll take a knee in the stadium tunnel when the national anthem is played at Saturday's homecoming game since their university moved them off the field after an earlier demonstration.
Kennesaw State University cheerleader Shlondra Young tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the so-called "Kennesaw Five" will kneel until the U.S. flag "represents what it should."
The cheerleaders say they've paid attention to the nationwide debate over NFL players kneeling during the anthem, and they prayed before doing so at a Sept. 30 game.
Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren tells The Marietta Daily Journal he called the school president after that game and was assured the demonstration would not happen again.
School officials say they moved the cheerleaders off the field before games to "improve the fan experience."

Colin Kaepernick files grievance accusing NFL owners of collusion

Former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked backlash by starting the trend of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, has filed a grievance accusing NFL owners of colluding against him under the latest collective bargaining agreement, according to a report out Sunday.
Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman said in a series of tweets that the controversial athlete has hired attorney Mark Geragos “who has represented numerous high profile clients.”
Geragos said in a statement posted on Twitter on Sunday that he filed the grievance “only after pursuing every possible avenue with all NFL teams and their executives.”
“If the NFL (as well as all professional sports leagues) is to remain a meritocracy, then principled and peaceful political protest — which the owners themselves made great theater imitating weeks ago — should not be punished,” Geragos said in the statement, “and athletes should not be denied employment based on partisan political provocation by the executive branch of our government. Such a precedent threatens all patriotic Americans and harkens back to our darkest days as a nation.”

Trump: NFL should have suspended Kaepernick
Kaepernick threw for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions during the 2016 season. However, since becoming a free agent, Kaepernick has had difficulty finding a job over the league-wide demonstrations during the national anthem that protest social injustice.
Commissioner Roger Goodell, according to Bleacher Report, has denied any blackballing of Kaepernick.
“I believe that if a football team feels that Colin Kaepernick, or any other player, is going to improve that team, they’re going to do it,” he said in June to ESPN.com.
The NFL players’ union said it would support the grievance, which was filed through the arbitration system that’s part of the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
According to Fox 13 Memphis, Kaepernick may have a good case as there have been owners, such as John Mara of the New York Giants, who have publicly said that they would not hire him and the Denver Broncos reportedly would not pursue him under any circumstances.
President Donald Trump began feuding with the NFL in September after asking at a political rally in Alabama: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b---- off the field right now, out. He’s fired. He’s fired!’”

Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Wednesday that the NFL should have suspended Kaepernick for kneeling during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
“The NFL should have suspended him for one game and he would have never done it again,” Trump told host Sean Hannity in Harrisburg, Pa. “They could have then suspended him for two games and they could have suspended him again if he did it a third time, for the season, and you would never have had a problem.”

President Trump hammered Hillary Clinton on Monday for her defense of NFL players protesting the national anthem, saying that kind of “thinking” is why she lost the election.
In a joint White House press conference with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Trump was asked about Clinton's latest comments on players who “take a knee.”
“Well—that’s why she lost the election. I mean, honestly, it’s that thinking—that is the reason she lost the election,” Trump responded.
He also repeated his early-morning call on Twitter for Clinton to run again. “Oh, I hope Hillary runs. Is she going to run? I hope. Hillary, please run again,” Trump said.
Clinton, in an interview Sunday during her overseas tour promoting her new campaign memoir, said kneeling during the national anthem is a “reverent” position that is not against “our anthem or our flag.” Clinton warned that people should resist “what are very clear dog-whistles” to excite the Trump base, citing the NFL-White House feud.

Earlier in the day, Trump had dared Clinton -- on Twitter -- to run again in 2020.

Trump seemed to soften his tone during the press conference on Monday, suggesting suspension, rather than termination, as a proper punishment.
“The NFL should have suspended some of these players for one game –not fire them—suspend them for one game. And then if they did it again, it could have been two games, then three games, then for the season,” Trump suggested. “You wouldn’t have people disrespecting our country right now.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars have apologized to local military leaders for demonstrating during the national anthem in London last month.
Jaguars President Mark Lamping sent a letter to the director of military affairs and veterans in Jacksonville saying the team was "remiss in not fully comprehending the effect of the national anthem demonstration on foreign soil has had on the men and women who have or continue to serve our country." The letter was forwarded to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry on Monday and available via his public email.

NFL owners are meeting this week in New York, where the national anthem will be a key topic of discussion.
Lamping's letter was dated Oct. 6, and it is unclear why it was forwarded to the mayor Monday. Lamping wrote it on behalf of Khan and Tom Coughlin, the team's executive vice president of football operations.
"The notion never entered the minds of our players or anyone affiliated with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but today we can understand how the events in London on September 24 could have been viewed or misinterpreted," Lamping wrote. "We owe you an apology and hope you will accept it."
Some fans in Jacksonville, a city that hosts a major Navy base and tends to lean Republican, expressed anger on social media sites and vowed never to attend another Jaguars game. Others praised Khan for siding with his players.
The day after the game in London, Curry called it stupid not to stand for the anthem even though such acts are protected by the U.S. Constitution.
"I stand and cover my heart for the pledge and the anthem," Curry said in a statement. "I think it's stupid to do otherwise. The U.S. Constitution protects the right for a lot of people to do a lot of stupid things. I am a Constitutional Conservative, so I respect the wisdom of our Founders."
The Jaguars announced they distributed 56,232 tickets for their home game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, a 27-17 loss that was the franchise's ninth in its last 10 games at EverBank Field. It was the team's fewest number of tickets distributed for a Jaguars home game since 2009.
Officials insisted the decrease had more to do with the team's losing ways in recent years — the Jaguars have won 20 of 86 games since 2011 — than the anthem demonstration.

Texans players met late Saturday to discuss how to protest as a team against Houston’s owner Bob McNair over his controversial “inmates running the prison” comment.
“The players could decide to all kneel together, and also discussed peeling the Texans decal off of their helmets or raising their fists,” according to ESPN.
Whatever their demonstration winds up being, it won’t be revealed before the game against the Seahawks.

An NFL team owner’s recent “inmates running the prison” remark has prompted a group of the league’s players to call for a meeting Monday to clear the air.
The Washington Post reported Saturday that a panel called the Players Coalition has requested a meeting Monday in Philadelphia with league Commissioner Roger Goodell, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, and free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
It wasn’t immediately clear if all parties had agreed to attend.
Meanwhile, ESPN reported Saturday that the Houston Texans players were planning to stage an unspecified protest against McNair's remarks prior to Sunday's game against the Seahawks in Seattle.
“Many players have been deeply troubled by the disturbing comments made by Texans' owner Bob McNair,” the Players Coalition said in a statement. “It is ironic that such a quote would emerge in the midst of an ongoing struggle to highlight injustices suffered by people of color, including our nation's deeply flawed approach to criminal justice and inhumane treatment of imprisoned people.”
McNair has apologized twice since making what he described as a “very regretful comment” during a recent league meeting about players’ national anthem protests. The comment was published in ESPN The Magazine.
But McNair insisted afterward that he wasn’t referring to the players as “inmates” when he said, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison.” Instead, he said, he was describing the relationship between team owners and the league office in New York.
Nevertheless, in a league on edge over race-related matters -- sparked in large part by Kaepernick’s 2016 protests against American society’s treatment of people of color – the “inmates” remark wasn’t accepted well.

The restaurant chain has partnered with several top NFL stars, including retired quarterback Peyton Manning and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, as well as 23 of the league’s 32 teams. Colin Kaepernick has been named as GQ's "Citizen of the Year" for 2017, earning a spot on the glossy magazine's front cover.
In a report "celebrating the man who became the movement," GQ noted that Kaepernick agreed to participate in the feature for the publication's December "Men of the Year" issue in an effort to "reclaim the narrative of his protest."
The feature comes four years after Kaepernick's first front cover appearance with GQ and, as the magazine noted, much has changed since then.
In 2013 the then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback was a star on the rise. Fast forward to 2017 and he has become a leader in protests of social injustice
"A simple act—kneeling during the national anthem—changed everything," GQ wrote. "It cost him his job. It also transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance."
In 2016, Kaepernick made history as the first NFL player to take a knee during the national anthem before games as a form of protest to police brutality and racial injustice, The Hill noted.
This sparked a movement as other players followed suit, drawing praise and criticism.
President Donald Trump slammed players who took a knee during the anthem, which prompted a fresh wave of protest among players.
Things heated up as coaches discussed whether the act was acceptable and Trump called for the NFL to enforce a rule making it mandatory for players to stand during the national anthem.
Meanwhile, Kaepernick, who has battled to find work since, filed a federal lawsuit against the NFL, stating that the league had colluded in not signing him, Bleacher Report noted.
Speaking to GQ about Kaepernick, Ameer Hasan Loggins, a writer and U.C. Berkeley academic, said, "The irony now is that the NFL is trying to make him voiceless because he made himself a voice for the voiceless."
Loggins added that this was a reason to die on the sword defending what Kaepernick has done.

As the nation prepares to celebrate Christmas Day, it looks like Santa didn’t come to fill the NFL’s empty stadiums for the league’s Week 16 games. The NFL’s Week 16 began with an admission by the Baltimore Ravens that the mass player protests during the playing of the national anthem when the team was playing on foreign soil in Britain’s Wembley Stadium, has seriously hurt its attendance all year here at home.
The Ravens sent a letter to season-ticket holders, sponsors, and suite holders, commenting on the number of empty seats at M&T Bank Stadium and specifically citing the anthem protests as a factor causing the no-shows.
Despite last week’s mea culpa, the stadium was still practically empty for Saturday’s game.

I used to be a fan. I actually went to the London game and when they booed my wife thought it was because the Brits didn't like our anthem being played. I didn't notice as I was staring at the flag. I didn't realize until the next morning what had happened. I have rarely, only on one occasion, been able to get face value tickets for a game and every home game this year I get a notification that they have more tickets available. I didn't realize it was this bad. Good for them, they'll get what they deserve I guess.

While the NFL gets socked with ratings declines, the NBA is off to its second-most-watched season ever.
ESPN, which has telecast 30 games since the season’s Oct. 17 opener, said Thursday that average viewership has soared 18 percent, to 1.8 million a game, from this point last year.
TNT, with 16 NBA telecasts to date, said its average is up 25 percent, to 2.1 million viewers. Even NBA TV, with 41 telecasts, is up 25 percent, to 365,000.
The averages, taken collectively, make for the hottest start since the 2010-11 season — the year LeBron James abandoned the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat.
Central to the NBA’s rise is its success in focusing the league’s many dramas on the game itself — an area where the NFL has failed miserably, experts say.
“NBA stars don’t wear helmets, so fans think they know them better by watching their features and their gestures,” said Ben Sturner, president of sports marketer Leverage Agency. “This sense of familiarity plays really well with the social media set.”
Meanwhile, the NFL is being penalized for a lack of focus, according to Sturner.

'Sunday Night Football' Ratings Fell 13 Percent in 2017

The weekly NFL matchup is still No. 1 on broadcast, but its losses outpace the league's overall TV showings.
Sunday Night Football wrapped another fall at No. 1 on the broadcast networks — but the higher they are, the harder they fall. So the NBC series was among the hardest hit of the NFL's broadcast franchises during another season of ratings declines.
The weekly telecast finished the season with an average 18.2 million viewers tuning in live and a 6.1 rating among adults 18-49. Both of those numbers represent double-digit drops from the previous year, with drops of 10 percent of its audience and 13 percent of its showing in the key demo outpacing overall 2017 declines for the league.
Sunday Night Football's closest broadcast rival among adults 18-49 is another NBC effort: This Is Us. The drama still trails the NFL by a healthy margin; however, with an average 5.1 rating among adults 18-49 with seven days' worth of time-shifting factored in.
Accounting for all primetime NFL showings of the season, Sunday Night Football was not down the most. The biggest year-to-year drops in primetime go to NBC and the NFL Network's shared coverage of Thursday Night Football, which took in an average 14 million viewers and a 4.1 rating in the key demo. The second half of the season's Thursday games dropped 21 percent, year-over-year, among adults 18-49, dipping below a comparatively steady Thursday Night Football showing from CBS (14.1 million viewers; 4.5 rating among adults 18-49) at the top of the season.
The most steady primetime NFL telecast of all was Monday Night Football. Embattled ESPN's weekly NFL game retained 95 percent of its 2016 season showing among adults 18-49 with an average 3.7 rating.
Year-end averages for Sunday Night Football arrived earlier than expected with the league scrapping the planned Dec. 31 finale for this coming weekend. The game, between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, would have been the first NFL game to air in primetime on New Year's Eve in over a decade. But the league shifted it to an earlier time slot to avoid the inevitable tune-out.
A contentious 2017 NFL season comes to an end, either way, this coming weekend. And while full ratings tallies aren't yet available, year-to-year viewership decreases have been tracking at 8 percent — concerning but less steep than the ones the NFL faced in 2016.

WASHINGTON — AMVETS officials are decrying “corporate censorship” from the National Football League for their decision not to run an ad in their Super Bowl program which responds to league players’ decision to kneel for the national anthem in protest of national equality issues.
The ad, which would have cost the veterans organization $30,000, features the tag “#PleaseStand” with a picture of service members saluting the American flag and information on how to donate to the congressionally-chartered organization.
Group leaders said NFL officials refused to include the ad in their Super Bowl publication, but did not issue a reason why. In a statement, AMVETS National Commander Marion Polk said the issue is one of fairness and respect.

In a statement, NFL Vice President of Communications Brian McCarthy said the Super Bowl game program “is designed for fans to commemorate and celebrate the game, players, teams and the Super Bowl. It’s never been a place for advertising that could be considered by some as a political statement.”
They noted that the program will include a similar ad from the Veterans of Foreign Wars that states simply “We Stand for Veterans.” McCarthy said AMVETS was asked to consider changing their ad to read “Please Stand for Our Veterans” but did not reply in time for production deadlines.
