30 years ago you could virtually remember the names of every pro bodybuilder, there were only about 40 competing in the world.

Shit's a business, not a charity. They give out more pro cards and they cycle more guys through the amateurs. Amatuers see all these guys getting pro cards and think they'll have a shot and before you know it their first show they place 10th and 2 guys get cards .. Next show he's 7th without even improving much and 2 mlre guys above him are gone so next show he's top 4.. Before you know it, its his turn because everybody better than him already has a pro card.

Then you end up with 20new pros a year paying their $200 a year and never gonna win a dime back.... Not to mention the 150 new girls every year with pro cards.

No matter how many pros I only look at the top 5 anyway. I usually don't pay much attention to the other classes either but that's just me.

damn straight it's watered down quality, the battles guys like Matt mendalhall too name but 1 had just too try MAKE it as a pro (something matt never achieved and he had a very good physique) Chris, Paul D, Mike M, Flex, Kevin and others from the early 90s they all had fantastic physiques and nothing was a given...times have changed in favour of a saturation of Sub par pros rather than a emphasis on the QUALITY of the amateur physiques making the hard earned transition too the Pro Ranks.

your only as relevant too the era you belong too, point is the physiques imo (and many others) were of a higher quality and standard of the era in question in relation too the number of pros that have been punched out of the production lines these days, Flex, Kevin, Dillett, Cormier and others...within the 1st few years as Pros...were already Top 6 in the Mr Olympia or better,

how many new pros in the last 5 years alone in this era can match their generation of the early 1990s as in results of their placings in the Mr Olympia competition..

Because then you can have close to 1,000 competitors at a contest.  Can take 3-4 days.  You need to be an IFBB Pro to compete in a pro show, and it means something.  But yes, it is easier in certain divisions to become a pro, but then, you won't make it into the top 15 ever if you do not improve, and get in the easy way...

But there are guys now competing in pro shows that are certainly not at pro level.

Winning a pro card in the 80s and 90s meant you were top ten Olympia material already, some took a year out, some just jumped right in.

Look at Labrada, Gaspari, Haney, Levrone, Paris they turned pro and then jumped right int the top tier.

Your first sentence held even within the past decade - consider Evan Centopani won the 2007 Nationals and won the New York Pro in 2009 - probably around 19 months later or something.  And he potentially could have won earlier than that.  Phil Heath turned pro in 2005, and won the Colorado Pro in 2006, beating seasoned veterans and stunning Darrem Charles [who, in hindsight, looked like a fair 2nd place finisher, but probably I had the thought process I did which was that name recognition alone should have vaulted him to 1st place.]

So it's safe to say that there have been some high level bodybuilders who have won Nationals in the past decade - guys who could have maybe placed 12th in the Olympia fresh off the boat.

But Chris Bumstead winning the North America's was strange - as amazing as he looks, he just didn't have the size I would think a pro bodybuilder needs, obviously something that he himself recognized, hence the division change to Classic Bodybuilding.

As for the 212 competitor who won last year's Nationals - the overall no less - that is quite surprising to me.

Difference is the completeness difference then to now,bbers were complete head to toe,Shawn Ray,as an amateur,Dennis Newman they looked lliked pros at the nationals USA,,Francios,Titus,lightheavy like Cottrell went pro won first 3 pro shows out of the gate.today more classes,more pros less complete quality.
