Strikers Have Shut Down Two Of The Most Important Economic Gateways In The World—And It's Costing The US Billions

Strikes in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach that began last Tuesday are delivering a blow to the U.S. economy.
Clerical workers from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 63 have been without a contract for 2.5 years, and negotiations between them and the ports broke down last Monday.
The ILWU has accused management of trying to outsource clerical jobs to overseas workers that are paid far less and receive fewer benefits.
Reuters reports that 10,000 dock workers that are members of the ILWU Local 63 are refusing to cross picket lines set up by 500 striking clerical workers, essentially shutting down 10 of 14 container terminals between the two ports.
Gluskin Sheff's David Rosenberg writes, "If you think Hurricane Sandy and the fiscal cliff are problematic for the economic backdrop, how about the strike (now in its fifth day) that has shut down the nation's busiest ports—LA and Long Beach?"
And with good reason. The impact of the strikes is estimated to be about $1 billion a day, and Matthew Shay, CEO of the National Retail Federation (NRF) has asked the White House to intervene in the contract negotiations:
"A 10-day lockout at the West Coast ports as a result of stalled negotiations in 2002 led to lingering supply chain disruptions and cost the U.S. economy $1 billion for each day of the lockout. It took the ports a full six months to recover, and the strike had a profound impact on the retailers, importers, manufacturers, agricultural exporters and other affiliated industries that rely on the ports every day.
An extended strike this time could have a greater impact considering the fragile state of the U.S. economy."
But international trade economist Jock O'Connell told Mercury News the impact could be lower than the $1 billion-a-day estimate. And some point out that the strikes occurred during a historically weak period for international trade.
The two ports are the busiest ports in the country and support 1.2 million jobs in Southern California. Nine ships have so far been redirected to other ports, and many are concerned that this will impact its credibility and drive business away.

Clerics and admin will always be needed in any large company. Not everyone is on a position to "acquire" new skills and some love what they do.
Banning together, fighting and leveraging for better pay, conditions and not getting all their jobs outsourced is the only alternative. And we live in a country where we are free to do that. If we weren't then what would we be?

Among the nation’s shrinking union population, the unionized office workers at Southern California’s ports make more than most actors in the Screen Actors Guild. They make more than union construction workers, truck drivers, school teachers, cops, fire fighters, and just about any other unionized profession you can think of (with the possible exception of sports players).
In fact, other than union bosses themselves, it can be easily argued that the office workers at SoCal ports are the union movement’s crème de la crème. As the office workers’ union has, so far, rejected an offer bringing their total compensation to nearly $200,000–they have become the highest paid office workers in the nation and they have a no layoff provision in their contract.
They are the 1% among unionized workers…Which is why their strike—which is costing $1 billion per day—seems all the more ridiculous.
Unionized office workers at California’s Los Angeles and Long Beach ports have been on strike now for over a week and it’s costing the California economy a staggering $1 billion per day as dock workers refuse to cross the office workers’ picket lines and unloaded ships line up, anchored at sea.
Losses mounted Friday for the strike-hobbled local ports, where picketing clerical workers have closed nearly all cargo terminals at the nation’s busiest shipping complex.
The strike by the 800-member clerks union, which began Tuesday, is creating losses estimated at $1 billion a day, including forfeited worker pay, missing revenue for truckers and other businesses and the value of cargo that has been diverted to other ports...

These are the same unions that in the last major dockworkers strike were blocking conversions from fucking pencil and paper to computers. They feared if their union employees were forced to use such experimental technologies (sorcery, if you will) that the increase in efficiency and workflow would result in fewer jobs.
I also thought I read that there is a protest clause in the current rift related to conversion to electric lighting from open-fire torches, but I could be mistaken.

The unions came into existence as a mass response to a lack of basic labor laws. Today, there is no real need for unions to exist because there are a myriad of labor laws on the books. In addition, their membership in most sectors is falling. However, they do maintain a strong political backing.

Now if NO unions are around then its a matter of what people are willing to work for. With no standard to meet it becomes neighbor against neighbor....Ill work for 12....Ill work for 8.....and down we go.
