Johnny Fuller was a Brit and i remember People did this. you got a black plastic bin bag and cut out holes for your arms and head. Did your run and sweated  ;D

There was a lot of bs about Fuller. Black belt in Karate and able to run a marathon in a crazy fast time. I don't remember what it was but it was something like 2:30.  I doubt he did 32 reps for 32 sets.

Yup Donny, but the truth of the matter is,that the black bags made him lose water weight, but once he rehydrated,it all came back......now calories are another story entirely, but the bags were unecessary and potentially dangerous.

Rich,I read somewhere online that most of the shit associated with Fullers outlandish regimens were all fabricated nonsense made up just for the magazines, but I have no clue if this is true.

32 sets of 32 reps is  just a tad overkill!  :D

2     William Mitchell (1)
3     Normand Vigneault
4     Chris Fakuzawa

I attended these two contest before the Mentzers were well known/famous.

Held at Mt. Park Amusement Center Holyoke Mass.

Run by legendary muscle control artist Ed Jubinville.......no entry fees, free admission, and Jubinville donated the trophies out of his own cash............ I saw guys like Katz,Arnold,Franco,Warren Fredericks,Leon Brown,Pete Caputo,Joe Ugolik,Stan Ugolik,Skip Robinson, and even Big Louie before he was known outside of NYC.

In fact, lots of scenes from some of the shows held there are in both the movie and the book,Pumping Iron and I`m in two crowd scenes in the movie PI.

My claim to fame!  ;D

I saw Franco blow up the hot water bottle and bend the re-bar between his teeth, and he was more impressed with Ronnie Magnum than he was to hear the accolades of the crowd.

The contest Ronnie Magnum won is also on www.musclememory.com where I got these results from.

I used to enter the odd lift contests there that were put on befoe the bodybuilding contest.......never trained for them though,Ed would just call me out of the crowd so I had no choice but to compete.

Great times, sadly gone now,but not in my memory.

I also saw Don Modezelewski there...he used to train with Steve Michalik.

His arms were almost as vascular as Hazbins and completely huge and developed.

He was totally white/pale as were a lot of guys back then.

Some used Sudden Tan,Dye-O-Derm,or just baby oil with iodine mixed into it.

A pic of Don:

Shit,I got my first set of vinyl coated weights from Sears back in 1969.

Franco was still in Italy boxing tomato cans and produce!!  :D

I did compete in powerlifting in the early to mid 1970`s.

I was thrilled when I saw my name in the back of this magazine with the power meet results:

Lost about 500 mags but bought this one again a couple of years ago on E-Bay just for the fuck of it.

Contests was the 1974 Boston Open Power Meet,of course the results came out a year later as usual.

The physique contest started at the stereotypical midnight hour and it was the first time I saw Lenny Archambault with Manuel Perry.......Perry was his training partner.

Lenny won,Manny got second.

Hey Rick,I did do one teen age contest in Worcester Mass.,wore swimming trunks, had about 11 inch "guns" and 16 inch quads with no tan.

I don`t talk about it often!  :D

Since then after many hours of squatting,I have brought my quads up to a whopping 18 inches! ;D

Saw Boyer Coe there though.....impressed me to this very day.

Looked like living sculpture come to life.

You got that right!!

It takes a special kind of lunatic to pit your body against heavy iron on a daily basis and eat shit that would make a billy goat puke all for a piece of plastic, and actually look forward to doing it.

But we`re the best built lunatics on the planet!  ;)

Those old school plates I was talking about.....'deep dish'

Yeah,those were cool.
Back at the old YMCA once I graduated from my basement gym, they had those deep dish plates and the old York globe type iron dumbells.

Fuck rubber plates!!

Where I train now, they have a rubber floor, with rubber mats on top of the floor, along with rubber coated dumbells that are simply way too big, and if you`re inclining the 100 pounders and get them as close to the floor as possible then lightly drop them, they freak out about making noise and dropping weights.

It`s a cinch they never trained heavy, and you know they aren`t gonna` pay for my ruined rotator cuffs by me trying to put the 100 pounders down as if they were a pair of pink dumbells.

Ridiculous.  :(

My first gym was in the basement of a Polish/American Club in Lawrence Mass.
All deep dish 45's...2 benches....one squat rack....one cable with a straight bar on it that didn't come off.
All solid canonball dumbells....40's up to 110's
One AM radio....one mirror  9" x 12"  :)
6 members.
First place I benched 6 plates...deep dish of course.

Chuck Amato used to manage the weight room at the Matt Dishman Community Center in Portland, OR when I worked out there in late 1960's and early 70's. Apparently he still works at Matt Dishman and helps people train, particularly folks with disabilities. He's a great guy as I remember. Chuck and I are the same age.

Danny Padilla had an amazing body. I met him briefly in Manhattan after a contest. All the bodybuilder pros I have met were so serious and he was all smiles after the contest. I like hearing his views on training how he tried HIT but even with heavy weights he made better progress training with 5 sets of 12 for every exercise.

I always loved the look of Amatos physique...nicely balanced with some of the best abs ever!

I have a disc that bb author Dennis B. Weis sent me with some great old articles and pics of Amato.

One thing I remember him doing was tying a rubber type of rope to a wall or door and then sprinting against the resistance it caused.

Kind of tough to explain and I haven`t looked at the disc in years now.

He also said you could eat as much popcorn as you wanted to eat when trying to get cut......I adopted this using air-popped popcorn and it works well.......creates a sensation of fullness combined with drinking water.

Great bodybuilder.

My wife worked with a lady that ate almost nothing besides popcorn and carrots. She was incredibly thin. Sometimes her skin would have an orange tint because of all the carrots she ate.

Exactly right,if people saw Zane in person in the shape he`s in in that pic, their jaws would hit the floor.

He wasn`t a monster, but he was damn near perfect, and at around 200 pounds of lean mass,he`s still considered by many to look like a swimmer.
::)

200 pounds of muscle on a small frame all the while being ripped,is far from puny.

he was 5'9 small boned, good waist to shoulder but was narrowish ,he made best of look/frame with posing style,he ranged 185/205 in shape, early yrs 69/mid 70's actually had bigger looking legs he was also less defined'extreme condition wise then 77/79 yrs he was unreal then 'peeled'ilike 70/75 look fuller ,ripped but still great shape.

A related side story.  :D

I went to a computer store in a nearby town and while I was talking to the owner,I learned his name was James Farbotnik.

So,I asked if he was any relation to bodybuilder John Farbotnik...the guys face lights up,he runs upstairs to an apartment above where his wife watched their children while the store was in operation, comes back down with some old mags with John Farbotnik on the covers and tells me that he is Johns son.

He also told me his father lived in California at the height of his bodybuilding "career",and later moved to Canada where he became somehow involved with the mob up there......he wouldn`t elaborate further.

Small town,small world,but I wouldn`t want to paint either of them !  ;)

Mike and I have been friends for 33 years.  He taught me how to tear phone books, tear decks of cards, tear license plates, break baseball bats etc.  He tried to teach me coin bending and the hanging thing but I was too big to hang myself and as hard as I tried (bloodied my finger & thumb tips a many many times) I could never bend coins. I never tried to break handcuffs. Mike could do it, in front only obviously but he cut, scared and bloodied his wrist badly. The metal cuffs cut you badly before the chain breaks.  Cuff breaking in the 4th photo below.

WOW!!

That`s fucking awesome Tom.....you`ve trained and hung out with legends dude.

I was always a fan of Daytons physique...got some real old mags somewhere here where he`s really young, then in later years,he looks far better, later on,he got ripped.

Dude could break a pair of police handcuffs and bend fucking quarters...that`s nuts.

I wish I could break out of cuffs, would have saved me a lot of police bookings!  :D

One really old MD or Strength & Health mag I had, said Dayton ate a pound of bologna a day, plus a lot of milk!  ;D

Needless to say, this was when he was young and smoothish, but nobody was truly ripped in the 60`s  anyway, except Johnny Isaacs and that Zabo guy!  ;)

:).

:D Mike was indeed a Kung Fu guy. Knew the stuff way before it became popular in the US. Chi mind control was of course the reason he had such huge pain tolerances. We worked on "mind control" and it worked nicely sometimes. When it came to bending coins I was simply unable to block out the pain of the coin cutting into my finger tips and was always forced to stop "bending" before the coin actually bent. We all have the strength to bend coins- all strong cats- it's just being able to endure the pain. True story.

Great shots Shep.......glad you arrived buddy!  ;)

The second pic you posted.................. John Citrone  ???

As far as striations and especially cross striations, hardly any are seen these days.......guys just care about bodyweight instead of how they are conditioned.

Still some shredded physiques in the lighter amateur ranks though if you look hard enough.

I only saw him once in Worcester Mass.

I`ve told this story before,but I`m gonna` tell it again dammit!  :D

Well when I spotted Boyer he had on a black Golds Gym warm up suit..looked pathetically small to me.

I went backstage, and when I saw him take off that suit,it was like he literally gained 100 pounds of sculpted muscle.

He was big, thick, legs like columns of marble, insane calf development along with those famous split peaked biceps.

The memory of watching him pose still inspires me to this day...he was in incredible shape and literally looked like a piece of living sculpture.

NO HOMO

that's strange because i just read about guys at this one gym getting wide shoulders because it had a low ceiling and they had to do shoulder presses seated, makes sense  you get little push from the legs seated giving more of the emphasis to the shoulders when pressing.

That is a great shot of the 1976 AAU Mr. America most muscular segment.  Back when a lot of the guys had real jobs. Joe Means was smaller than all of them by a lot but he won most muscular because he was so ripped. He was a cop. Pat Neve is a multi millionaire driving more exotic cars than Trump. Clint was a chiropractor.

Val should have been crushed by both the legendary Bill Seno and the Myth.........if the AAU was fair back then.

The interview part of the contest before the actual contest probably didn`t help Sergios cause as he was Cuban, plus he was black.

Not to make this racial (but I`m gonna` anyway),lots of top guys like Poole and Oliva went over to the IFBB because in reality, even a guy as good as Bob Gajda was when he won,he was no match for Oliva.

Same with Melvin Wells,Art Harris,Rock Stonewall,Ken Covington, etc. etc.,all should have been placed much better ,and they would have been if based on physique alone.

Heh, yes!  Good call.  I'd forgotten all about Mickey the gorilla.  Ell Darden tells a story about him but, since it pales in comparison to something the ever-great Juruth might spin about his adventures with Branch Warren and aliens, I'm not sure it's even worth sharing :(

Okay, okay:  apparently, Jones let Mickey loose when a bunch of guys, including some Tampa Buccs linemen, were training at "Nautilus HQ" (read:  a big quonset hut on Jones' rather expansive property).  Mickey got mad and started beating on a concrete wall, which allegedly made the wall violently shake, even stirring up dust from the foundations IIRC.  According to Ell's account, the Buccs players ran out of the place as fast as they could, ready to piss their pants.   ??? ::)  :D

That's not incredibly hard to believe given what Jones had Ray Mentzer do to that tennis dyke ... Martina Navartavlova?  (I can't be bothered to Google that gremlin's actual name.)  For whatever reason, Jones didn't like her, so he had Ray pick her up from the airport in a little cheap car with no A/C.  Then, as soon as they got to Art's property in Ocala, Ray lead her straight to the alligator pit.  She's said to have flipped and wanted to go back to the airport immediately.

I wish Onlyme was still around to corroborate or improve on that story's details :(  Surely, at some point in Ray's training lectures and such, he would've spoken candidly about his adventures whilst working for Arthur Jones.

That`s Dan Mackey I believe....Joe never looked "quite" that good.  ;)

How so?

Too many distractions at the times I'm able to to train plus my offices are up stairs and I get to the point where I'll do either computer or paperwork. It just makes it easier to train somewhere else.

wish there was a centralized posting of all their diets/workouts..

they all have a similar build/shape and must have been doing the same diets/workouts...

not just Rheo Blair stuff.. heavy cream all day..

what were they all eating?

I suspect that the main difference in this type of physique and today's charlatans is that today it is a take all the dope you can at any cost, even their life.

Other differences would be people trained hard and took time away form both training and steroids.  They ate but didn't stuff themselves throughout the day. I never saw anyone walking around the gym with a stupid milk jug filled with some mysterious potion.  Neither did I know anyone that prepared their chicken, broccoli and rice (or whatever) and carried it with them everywhere in Tupperware.

And yes, more than a few bodybuilders were lazy and stooooopid but unlike today, the majority of people we saw on the dais and trained with in the gym had real jobs.  They could also string together words to form coherent sentences.

They weren't drinking Rheo Blair crap.  That's nonsense.

Pre-contest they ate meat, fish, lean proteins.  Some veggies for carbs but not much.  No dairy products or cheese as it has too much sodium.  No baked goods.

A cheat day once a week maybe.

In addition they were taking lots of the then popular steroids. But generally only pre-contest.  No year-round drugs!  No reason to do that.  They peaked for one or two shows a year.

Off season they ate normally.

Pre-contest they trained 4-6 days a week with splits.  Off season 3-4 times a week if that much.

If everyone lived like this there would be a lot of lean, muscular people walking around.
