Title: Discuss your Worst Gym Accident
Post by: mrsirjojo on July 13, 2006, 09:41:23 AM
So I was at the gym on Tuesday, moved to a machine and saw that the weight stack was suspended about a foot off the bottom because the pin was in crooked. I figured I'd put a 25 pound weight in there to catch the stack if it fell while I looked at the pin, when of course, it crashed down on my hand. My thumb got caught between the top of the stack and the weight I was sliding in, but thankfully, wasn't broken. The pad in the tip of my thumb burst right out though, and I have to wear a massive bandage on it for the next few months. Hurt like hell, but I felt more stupid than anything driving myself to the hospital. Incidentally, my first time dealing with a doctor younger than myself. That sure makes 32 feel old...

Anyone else out there a who can't believe how stupid they were, looking back?

they had just rearranged the gym where i used to lift and they put a weight handle rack(the triangle rack that holds pulldown bars, handles and whatnot) about 3 feet behind the lat pulldown station. i forgot about it and after a set i got up and backed right into it. it was the loudest thing i've heard in a gym with all the bars and handles crashing down. the entire gym froze and i casually picked it all up and moved the rack to the corner where it should have been.

I went to the weight tree to grab a 45 pound plate and little did I know that a dinky 2.5 plate was in front of it. I didn't see it. So I pulled the 45 plate off and the little bastard 2.5 pound plate fell on my baby toe. Worst pain of my life. Blood all over my sock. The best part is I continued to workout and didn't notice all the blood until I took my shoe off at home.

does anyone ever have a barbell collapse on them while benching after exhaustion? Happens to me about every two months. I am always like "hey, bro, a little help?"

Ouch...Force = Mass x Acceleration, so a few feet up and that 2.5 pounds becomes a hell of a lot more.

In my case, I'm not sure what happened, but I assume my thumb got caught pinched hard and fast between the weight I was inserting and the top of the stack. Surely, my thumb would have been pulverized by a stack on stack collision of maybe 50 pounds from a few feet. A curse on anyone who leaves a machine with the stack suspended by a crooked pin.

Only once, and I was too proud to ask for help. I rolled it down over my stomach to my pelvis. Hurt like hell though. It's almost impossible to get your strength back for one lousy rep if you can't take in any air

My buddy was using the seated Hammer Strength Chest Press machine. The one where you put the weights on the handles and push out. Well he had it stacked where the last 45 was barely on there. He always puts his feet and legs to the left and right instead of in front. Needless to say a 45 came off the post and slammed down on his foot. A few broken toes.

I was running up the gym stairs and all of a sudden tripped and came down crashing at full force. Luckily I had my trusty pinky finger to land on. Needless to say, it took a month to heal the fractures.

When i was 18, i was on flat bench doing dumbells and my left arm gave way......good thing for a spot from my bro..it was bout to smash my grill!

When I was 20, i forgot to put the collar on my bar when doing squats, one side droped and the seasaw effect took care of the otherside...opps DID I DO THAT ?

2 years ago, I did shrugs with 110 dbs, and on the way to puttin them back i tripped and smashed the mirror in front of the rack....

Hahahaha Monster Clumbsiness

My worst gym accident didn't even involve weights.  I was training with this dude and his wife, and I notice some ugly crack-whore looking bitch with MONSTER jug implants.  She was the nastiest ragged-out should've-quit-dancing-decades-ago stripper trash on the planet so I laughingly made some brutal comment about her to the couple I was training with.  The guy's wife says "That's my sister..."

So now I don't comment much when I see chicks like that ;)

I was 17 and just starting to lift weights when this happened...just got done doing some light benching when i was sliding a 35lb plate on the bar and the bitch slipped through my hands and landed on my left big toe...it hurt real friggin bad but i didn't want to look like a tool in the gym so i shrugged it off...when i got to my car my sneaker was soaked in blood and ended up having to get taken to the hospital where explaining how it happened became the joke of the ER!

I've posted this before too...  About 7-8 years ago I was squatting 365 in the power cage and just decided to go for broke and get as many reps as I could.  I thought I'd go for 20 reps and see how many I could get.  So eventually the bar started sliding down my back because of the sweat...  so I kind of drop down to drop the bar on the pins, I feel something go "pop" in left my leg on the way down...  and then the bar slammed on the pins and the way my arms were holding the bar, they got pinned between the bar and the rear of the cage.  So my forearms were kind of bruised and bloodied but thankfully not seriously hurt.  My leg was injured so I didn't squat again for a few months.  That wasn't very fun.

An ounce of prevention (a little chalk on the shoulders and having a spotter) and the whole unfortunate incident probably could've been avoided.

LOL, I hate that!!!  That just happened to me a couple months ago.  It was one of those rubber coated 45's so it kind of grabbed the skin and ripped as it slid down.  Ouch!!

After using a plate loaded Cybex Advanced Pulldown, I unloaded the quarter and two 45's from one side then went to the other side and was looking away and forgot about the 25 on the outside and pulled on the first 45.  Dropped the 25 directly on my left big toe and crushed it.  Felt like i had a gallon of blood in my shoe but it didn't break the skin.  Needless to say the toe was broken but there's nothing that can be done about that.  Still can't bend it w/out pain and that was almost two years ago!  Moral of the story:  Pay attention to what you're doing, not who's around you.

After experimenting with a new diet and protein supplements, I went to the gym too soon and instead of blowing a fart, I shot a stream of hot diarrhea out of my ass. I was only wearing shorts and boxers, so it dripped to the floor near the squat rack. It got into my socks and it felt squishy. Nobody noticed. I left and called it a day. :)

back in 1991, my first month in the gym, i was doing monster behind-the-neck presses with a dime on each side.  my friend challenged me to an even more brutal weight of 75 lbs for my last set.  he gave me a lift-off, i did 4-5 reps, and then got stuck at the bottom.  he wanted to take the bar from me, grabbed it (standing behind me), and i simply let it go.  of course he could not hold it and the bar flew down, hit the bench, and crushed my friend's index finger in the process.  he had a crushed bone and a damaged tendon.  the tendon was reattached surgically but until today his finger looks a little bit crooked.

Saw a kid in high school gym doing dumbell flies and a 25 lb plate was next to him on the floor. He went to go drop the weight while still holding on to the dumbells. The edge of the 25 pound plate popped half of his middle finger right off.  :o Blood squirting like a horror movie. I turned pale as a ghost and stumbled right through a basket ball game cus I was in shock from seeing it. :o

My worst gym accident was I found myelf doing dumbbell kickbacks with a 25lb dumbbell because I thought it would 'etch in detail' in my triceps...

Another time it was in 98 when I first started training...I read FLEX and decided to follow the routine of FUX or NASSER or someone...exercise, set, reps etc...I didnt know shit except that I was chronically tired and always had head-aches and had terrible insomnia despite how tired I was and I lost weight because I didnt have an appetite because little did I know...I was following a routine of a geared-up pro bodybuilder and the routine was probably ghost written anyway..and I was training 6 days a week 3 hours a day sometimes two-a-day-ers.

Besides that...walking in a gym with GIRL-A hand in hand when GIRL-B who I was dating at the time just so happen to go to that particular gym when I was supposed to not be training that day and was 'just gonna chill and watch a movie tonite...get some sleep...you know...'

 Hahahaha...

two deadlifting stories:

i once deadlifted in some shorts i got from abercrombie and fitch.  i decided to try to impress some people by deadlifting 4 plates for some reps.  halfway up the third rep i heard a tear that scared the shit out of me.  i practically threw the weight to the side, turned completely red and finished my workout with the back of my ass ompletely exposed.  it was that day that i realized the value of a good pair of athletic shorts.

another time, i was trying max out with a weight that was, at the time, way too heavy for me.  i got halfway up, was straining harder than i ever have on a lift, and suddenly i noticed in the mirror that blood was flowing out of my nose.  i went to the doctor later that day to find it was a burst blood vessel.  luckily it wasn't dangerous, but i definitely learned something about knowing my limits...

Droping a 45 down my shin(I still have the scar) :-X

Got stuck under the bar on the decline bench. At the buisiest time of the day. ;D

Scariest thing.

She had turned her back to the bar so she didn't know what was about to happen. She was putting the weight on the tree.So all in slowmotion the bar starts tippin' towards this poor bastard.I'm at a full run across the room.I caught the end of the damn bar just as the weights started sliding off the otherside. :o

I once was doing squats on the smith machine with 3 plates on each side and when I was done I went to hook the weight.  Well I thought it was hooked, but the tip of the hook was actually right on the very top of the rod or bar it should hook on to.  So the hook then slipped back while I was stepping out of the lift.  I was stepping forward and the weight started to crash down - luckily I was able to get my arms and body out from under it.  Since it forgot to use the safteys, the thing went all the way to the floor "BANG!!!"  Everybody in the gym about had a heart attack.  I am thankful that I didn't step backwards out of the lift - I would be crushed and paralized right now.

My back got tweaked and was sore for two weeks - and I learned to use all safetys from then on.  That still creeps me out.

Actually, the machine was fine.  The plates (rubber coated) hit first - so the machine never hit metal to metal.  Though I'm sure the people on the floor below the machine are still having flashbacks of the ceiling nearly coming doen on them.

I can't reach the lat pulldown bar and wrap without standing on the bench.  I have a system, and when I 'repel' it actually looks halfway graceful.  ::)  I forgot to change the pin which had the whole stack loaded and looked like bug splattered on a windshield hanging up there.

ha ha

Be careful of hooks.......

A friend of mine witness a girl in his club that was doing pull downs & instead of the carabiner hooks/snap clips, the machine was equipped with the old fashioned "S" style hooks.  She was wearing a sports top & when she released the bar back to the starting position, the hook snagged her top & pulled it up almost over her head.  He told me he didn't know if he should laugh, stare at her boobs, help her, or all of the above.

Needless to say....he helped her out because she was really stuck & embarrassed.  Once he got her unstuck, she went to the ladies room but never returned.

That would be very, very embarrassing. My gym is basically a surrounded by mirrors.  If it's not a wall of mirrors, it's a wall of windows.

Back in my G days(ghb) i did alittle to much in the middle of cardio so that at the end of cardio when i was leaving, i walked to my car got in it---started it up and slowly pulled out of my space.  Now i'm driving thru the parking lot a procede to G out..I smash straight into an M3 Bmw...I was only going about 5-10 miles an hour so it didnt do much damage...I g'd out for only about 15 seconds...I could have f cking killed someone :-\...Thank God i only put a small scratch in this guys bumper...I wrote a note and put it on the guys windshield but to this day i believe that the note was just a bunch of scribbles  because i was basically out of my mind...Although i didn't know it at the time...

A few days later i didn't think much of it and almost forgot about it until i was again driving out of the gym and this time saw the guy get into his M3....I've seen this guy in the gym many times and he is an absolute douche bag...He actually tried throwing a line at my wife(ex now) one day when i wasn't there...

When i saw who it was getting into his car, a big smile went over my face but also i was alittle nervous for i really didn't know if my writing was legiable that night...I'm guessing it wasn't for i didn't hear a thing about it...

That was only one of many gym accident/incidents...

I was training with some monsters.  3rd. place NABBA USA'S, A national record holding power lifter and made the mistake of trying to use the ###'s they were using.  I messed my back up trying to pull 800 off the floor and it took a month before I could do any lower body movements.

I don't know if this counts, but a dude dropped dead one day while on the treadmill @ worlds.  Just went limp with a massive heart attack and died before he hit the floor.  I was a couple of machines away, but tried CPR, but He was already gone.  It doesn't get worst than that.

I saw one guy do one legged calf raises on the leg press and his foot slipped off and it came down on his other chin. there was 5 plates a side on it. He screamed and his chin had a big indent/hole in it the size of a baseball.         Another guy was doing hack squats and his feet slipped out from under him and he crashed down on his ass breaking his tailbone. both of these were the result in training with wet shoes.

They gotta stop this poolside training.  The aqua socks just aren't made for it.
