I'm more curious about why the church leaders conducting the baptism didn't opt for a safer venue?  A large inflatable pool perhaps?  Many churches do this.

Maybe they were simply unaware of the power of the oceans?

It's like choosing to cook the food for a church luncheon in a raging inferno that's consuming a collapsing building as opposed to using a simple Weber grill in the church parking lot and then criticizing God when folks get burned or died in the inferno.

The great flood came and a priest found himself up to his neck in water and it was still rising.  A boat came along and the sailor yelled "jump in" but the priest refused because he said God would save him.  The water kept rising slowly, another boat came along and the sailor yelled "jump in before its too late" but the priest refused because he was waiting for God to save him.  The water was about to cover his head when another boat came along yet again the priest refused because he was waiting for God to save him.  The priest ended up drowning and died.  When he got to heaven he asked God why he didn't save him and God replied "Stupid dumbass, I sent you three different boats"

Why would they need to if God was looking out for them?

It was god plan for him to be born, live his life, find christianity, then randomly drown in the ocean in a scene of brutal irony. That was always the plan ;D

Why would they need to if God was looking out for them?

God gave man dominion over his creation and ample resources to care for it appropriately.

If we know clearly that some aspects of that creation are both necessary yet extremely powerful why take a chance when there plenty of far less dangerous options?

People love posting memes with images of the starving in Africa with some "witty" remark about God's failure.  Well, the US alone produces enough food to feed the entire earth many times over.  Why then are folks starving?

What God didn't give mankind was a promise that folks will never stub their toes or break their arms or get the flu or lose their lives.
