President Biden on Friday told a story involving an Amtrak conductor who supposedly grabbed his cheeks and shouted “Joey, baby!” — despite facts contradicting the tale, which Biden has told on at least six prior occasions as president.
The amusing anecdote — in which Biden apes former Amtrak conductor Angelo Negri’s Italian-American accent — was declared “False” last year by CNN “Facts First” journalist Daniel Dale.
In some tellings, the encounter happened at the end of Biden’s eight years as vice president after he crossed 1 million miles on Air Force Two. But that version is impossible because Negri, who retired in 1992, died in May 2014.
Biden called the latest version a “true story” and said it happened early in his vice presidency before his mother died in 2010, which is equally difficult to square with facts because Biden didn’t cross 1 million miles on Air Force Two until September 2015.
Last year, Biden alternately said it happened in “my fourth or fifth year” as vice president, “toward the end of my term” or ” seven years into” his time as vice president — rather than the latest version, which would have been within his first year in office.
The president most recently told the tale in December in Kansas City, Mo., and shared it twice in October — at the NJ Transit maintenance facility in Kearny, NJ, and in Scranton, Pa.
Biden told the story in September during an Oval Office meeting with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in June during an infrastructure speech in Wisconsin and in April 2021 at a train station in Philadelphia. He also told the story in 2020 while campaigning.
Biden, who turns 80 this year, is the oldest-ever president and his critics accuse him of being in mental decline. However, Biden has faced criticism for years about imprecise or incorrect claims. He dropped out of the 1988 Democratic presidential primary after revelations he exaggerated his academic record and plagiarized both a campaign speech and a law school paper.

President Joe Biden told a room full of supporters in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on Tuesday that he spoke with the man who "invented" insulin, who said it was never patented because it was supposed to be available to everyone.
The president was giving a speech to gain support for the Democratic Party going into the midterms.

One of those benefits is capping the cost of insulin at $35, and the reason, Biden said, is because the diabetes treatment was meant to be available for everyone.
"How many of you know somebody with diabetes, and needs insulin," Biden asked the crowd. "Do you know how much it costs to make that insulin drug for diabetes? … It was invented by a man who did not patent it because he wanted it available for everyone. I spoke to him, OK?"
However, insulin, a hormone produced in the body, was never invented, but was discovered by Frederick Banting.
The late physician and scientist died at the age of 49 on Feb. 20, 1941.
Biden was born on Nov. 20, 1942.

WASHINGTON — Even my Republican sister is not immune to Joe Biden’s gregarious Irish charm.
She met him at media holiday parties over the years and was so impressed that she got seduced to the other side for a time, voting for the Obama-Biden ticket in 2008 and writing in Biden’s name for president in 2012. She sent out a Christmas card one year with a picture of herself cheek to cheek with Biden — and some of her Republican friends stopped speaking to her.
So I was surprised recently when I discovered my sister writing a letter to President Biden, a plea that she had started in the middle of the night, after mulling over the matter for quite a while.
“I watched as you told the nation that you had six grandchildren and you loved each one of them,” she wrote. “I believe that. What I cannot believe and what I find unconscionable is that you refuse to admit or accept the fact that there is a beautiful little 4-year-old girl living in Arkansas by the name of Navy Joan who is your seventh grandchild.”
Peggy wrote about Hunter’s high-priced lawyers going down to Arkansas to make sure Navy could not use the Biden name and to slash child support payments.
“She has the Biden blood running through her veins, and all she is going to have as a reminder of this are some of Hunter’s original paintings; sounds like a lousy trade-off, if you ask me,” Peggy wrote, referring to the agreement that assigned some of Hunter’s artwork to the daughter he has never met, even though DNA testing in 2019 established his paternity.

“As she grows up, knowing that her father and paternal grandparents wanted nothing to do with her,” Peggy wrote, “she will probably be able to see a video or two showing her half sister Naomi getting married on the South Lawn and you watching the fireworks on the balcony with little Beau. And if she misses that, there will be plenty of schoolmates to remind her that she wasn’t wanted. Kids can be mean that way.”
She asked why Hunter couldn’t act like Tom Brady, who treats his son by Bridget Moynahan, the actress he was dating before he married Gisele Bündchen, the same as the two children he and Gisele had. (Not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger, who says in a new Netflix documentary series that he has a great relationship with the son he had after a tryst with his family’s housekeeper that broke up his marriage.)
“Mr. President, many years ago, you lost your daughter in a horrendous car accident,” Peggy continued. “I know you still carry that pain with you every day because I have watched your face when you speak about her. Please do not throw away your granddaughter.”
My sister and I often disagree about politics, but this is not a political issue to us. It’s a human one. Joe Biden’s mantra has always been that “the absolute most important thing is your family.” It is the heart of his political narrative. Empathy, born of family tragedies, has been his stock in trade. Callously scarring Navy’s life, just as it gets started, undercuts that. As Katie Rogers, a Times White House correspondent, wrote in a haunting front-page piece last weekend about Hunter’s unwanted child, Biden is so sensitive “that only the president’s most senior advisers talk to him about his son.” Rogers said that “in strategy meetings in recent years, aides have been told that the Bidens have six, not seven, grandchildren.” Jill Biden dedicated her 2020 children’s book to the six grandchildren.
What the Navy story reveals is how dated and inauthentic the 80-year-old president’s view of family is.
Once you could get away with using terms like “out of wedlock” and pretend that children born outside marriage didn’t exist or were somehow shameful. But now we have become vastly more accepting of nontraditional families. We live in an Ancestry.com world, where people are searching out their birth parents and trying to find relatives they didn’t know they had.
I have sympathy for Hunter going into a “dark, bleak hole,” as he called it. I have sympathy for a father coping with a son who was out of control and who may still be fragile. With Hunter, his father can seem paralyzed about the right thing to do.
But the president can’t defend Hunter on all his other messes and draw the line at accepting one little girl. You can’t punish her for something she had no choice about. The Bidens should embrace the life Hunter brought into the world, even if he didn’t consider her mother “the dating type.”
The president’s cold shoulder — and heart — is counter to every message he has sent for decades, and it’s out of sync with the America he wants to continue to lead.

WASHINGTON — Even my Republican sister is not immune to Joe Biden’s gregarious Irish charm.
She met him at media holiday parties over the years and was so impressed that she got seduced to the other side for a time, voting for the Obama-Biden ticket in 2008 and writing in Biden’s name for president in 2012. She sent out a Christmas card one year with a picture of herself cheek to cheek with Biden — and some of her Republican friends stopped speaking to her.
So I was surprised recently when I discovered my sister writing a letter to President Biden, a plea that she had started in the middle of the night, after mulling over the matter for quite a while.
“I watched as you told the nation that you had six grandchildren and you loved each one of them,” she wrote. “I believe that. What I cannot believe and what I find unconscionable is that you refuse to admit or accept the fact that there is a beautiful little 4-year-old girl living in Arkansas by the name of Navy Joan who is your seventh grandchild.”
Peggy wrote about Hunter’s high-priced lawyers going down to Arkansas to make sure Navy could not use the Biden name and to slash child support payments.
“She has the Biden blood running through her veins, and all she is going to have as a reminder of this are some of Hunter’s original paintings; sounds like a lousy trade-off, if you ask me,” Peggy wrote, referring to the agreement that assigned some of Hunter’s artwork to the daughter he has never met, even though DNA testing in 2019 established his paternity.

President Joe Biden on Monday observed the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at an event in Alaska during which he made the dubious claim that he visited Ground Zero in New York city the day following the attacks.
"Ground Zero in New York - I remember standing there the next day and looking at the building. I felt like I was looking through the gates of hell," he said. "It looked so devastating... from where you could stand."
Biden, however, was in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 12, 2001, for a Senate session. His 2007 book "Promises to Keep" states that Biden arrived in Washington on Sept. 11 after a plane hit the Pentagon and that he saw the smoke from that crash, per the New York Post. The outlet further highlighted a headline from Sept. 12, 2001, that asserted Biden spent the day in D.C.
His book makes no mention of any trip to Ground Zero in New York, but does state "I headed back to the Capitol the next morning," placing him in D.C. for much of the day.
The president has long attracted scrutiny for his habit of telling dubious stories in apparent bids to relate to his audience. He has repeatedly claimed that his son Beau died in Iraq, for example. In reality, Beau Biden died in 2015 of brain cancer at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
His latest gaffe comes amid mounting scrutiny of his age and fitness for office. At age 80, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history.

Although I am a registered democrat, I will vote for the candidate I believe is the most qualified. However, a candidate’s specific qualifications are difficult to know for certain. Who and what is most believable, the candidate, campaign hype, track record/experience, or the media? Probably none of these things, which is why many people vote for the person they 'like' the most, which is usually whoever has the most engaging personality and is the most memorable.
Debates are interesting and can be helpful when candidates reveal and stick to their agenda. But even then, politicians notoriously tell people what they want to here and what their advisors tell them to say. Think of candidate’s campaigns as well-oiled machines. At a military veterans event in Delaware, President Joe Biden told a detailed story about how as vice president he presented one of his uncles, Frank Biden, with a Purple Heart, which his uncle refused to accept. But the facts of Biden’s story don’t add up.
Frank Biden, who served in the Army during World War II, died in 1999 — when Joe Biden was a senator, not vice president.
Also, Biden said he got the Purple Heart for his uncle at the urging of his father, Joseph R. Biden Sr. But Biden’s dad died in 2002, when the current president was still in the Senate.
The president made his remarks on Dec. 16 at Major Joseph R. “Beau” Biden III National Guard/Reserve Center, the state’s National Guard headquarters, which was named after his son Beau, who died in 2015. He visited the center to urge military veterans to take advantage of new benefits available under the PACT Act.
Biden said his uncle “fought in the Battle of the Bulge” and “won the Purple Heart,” but “he never got it.” When Biden “got elected vice president,” he said his father urged him to get Uncle Frank a Purple Heart, which the Army says is awarded in the name of the president to “any member of an Armed Force or any civilian national of the United States wounded or killed, or who has died after being wounded” in a military conflict.
Biden said his Uncle Frank signed up for the Army a day after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941.
Biden, Dec. 16: On the Finnegan side of the family, four brothers. Every single one volunteered the very next day, on Monday, to join. My uncle, Frank Biden, joined. My father was working in the shipyards.
The fact of the matter is that, you know, it wasn’t a second thought. They just showed up. And there’s a generation, represented by you, Ray, that doesn’t look for accolades.
You know, I — my dad, when I got elected vice president, he said, “Joey, Uncle Frank fought in the Battle of the Bulge.” He was not feeling very well now — not because of the Battle of the Bulge. But he said, “And he won the Purple Heart. And he never received it. He never — he never got it. Do you think you could help him get it? We’ll surprise him.”
So we got him the Purple Heart. He had won it in the Battle of the Bulge. And I remember he came over to the house, and I came out, and he said, “Present it to him, okay?” We had the family there.
I said, “Uncle Frank, you won this. And I want to…” He said, “I don’t want the damn thing.” (Laughter.) No, I’m serious. He said, “I don’t want it.” I said, “What’s the matter, Uncle Frank? You earned it.” He said, “Yeah, but the others died. The others died. I lived. I don’t want it.”
There are a few discrepancies in Biden’s story about his uncle.
We told the White House that we couldn’t find any support for the president’s story — at least how he told it. Both his uncle and father died in Wilmington, Delaware, years before Joe Biden became vice president. His uncle died at age 81 on Nov. 28, 1999, according to the Scranton Tribune, and his father died at 86 years old on Sept. 2, 2002, according to the Baltimore Sun. Joe Biden became vice president in January 2009.
We asked the White House if this incident happened and, if so, when. We asked if perhaps it occurred when Biden was a senator. But the White House did not answer our questions.
Also, our fact-checking colleagues at Snopes found that Frank Biden joined the Army on July 17, 1941 — which was months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, contrary to Biden’s claim that Frank Biden joined the Army a day after Pearl Harbor.
Snopes cited a Jan. 20, 2021, Facebook post by the National Cemetery Administration at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which gave the dates of Frank Biden’s service. (The NCA post also said Frank Biden was discharged from the Army on July 24, 1945 — seven months after the Battle of the Bulge commenced on Dec. 16, 1944. So it is possible that Frank Biden fought in that battle, although we cannot confirm that he did.)
We also couldn’t find any record that Frank Biden was awarded a Purple Heart, either while he was alive or posthumously.
Traces of War, a website on the history of global conflicts, says about 1.1 million World War II veterans received a Purple Heart, but its list of Purple Heart recipients does not include Frank Biden. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor also keeps a list of those honored with the award, but Frank Biden does not appear on that website, either.
The White House did not tell us if Joe Biden secured a Purple Heart for his uncle. And, when we told the White House that we could find no record of Frank Biden receiving a Purple Heart, the White House pointed us to a disclaimer on the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor website that says, “Enrollment is voluntary as there is no comprehensive list of Purple Heart recipients in existence.” The Army also notes that “there’s not a consistent record kept” of Purple Heart recipients.
