yeah i always conclude that it's only something you would do if you have already arrived financially

and you are just relaxing with a ton of money

then there is no reason not to buy shiny car


but it's a bit weird to see average people drive audi 6, bmw 7, etc but at the same time they could not afford to stop working for a year or two straight

which they easily could for the price difference of their car and a cheap car

In my case, I got my first shiny car because my wife took me to the motor show on Fathers day - after taking me to the pub for lunch and getting me shitfaced.

It's still not 100% clear exactly what happened.

I agree, I also know people with expensive cars on finance without even the spare cash to repair it if it goes wrong and if they missed even 1 month salary their life is fucked and the whole house of cards falls.

I bought a new Escalade back in 2011 and put $4,000 down...thought I was balling!

Took a pay cut the next year but just couldn't give up that car.  People always commented/complimented it and it made me feel "cool" and 1 step above my peers.

After having children I now drive a VERY modest, used SRX and have no problem with that at all.
