Obviously the drug regimen and in turn the physiques have changed but I also think part of it is the change in photography(i.e film to digital, skill level, post processing etc). Also keep in mind a lot of these older photos are scanned images that have gone through two rounds of post processing one originally and another post-scan to bring back or even add detail and often grain.

Also a big pet peeve of mine is when these photographers publish photos of competitors when they are not even fully hitting their poses. Plenty of examples given by poldaktalos.

Well, each generation will bring their own characters, etc......but, the late 80's and 90's Olympia line up will never be matched.........

Neither would have the last 3 Mr. O's been Mr. O's had they competed in a time when there was actual competitors.
