A man who was slashed in the face with a machete during a wild brawl at a beauty pageant after-party in Melbourne’s south-east early this morning will undergo surgery for his wounds, police say.

More than 1000 members of Melbourne’s Sudanese community had gathered at a public hall in Clayton last night to celebrate the Miss South Sudan Australia beauty pageant, held the previous day in Springvale.

Police arrived at the scene to find a large group of people fighting in the street, and officers were forced to retreat and call for back-up when they were pelted with bottles.

It took 12 police units and three dog-squad units two hours to bring the violence under control.

VIOLENT brawls at three African beauty pageants in the past year have increased pressure on organisers and police to abolish the events.

In the latest incident in Melbourne early yesterday morning, a man was repeatedly slashed with a machete and a bicycle chain in a wild street fight outside a party advertised in connection to Saturday night's Miss South Sudan Australia pageant.

Last October, four men were stabbed in a brawl involving up to 100 people, many of whom had travelled from interstate for a Miss Africa pageant.

Yesterday's brawl in the southeast Melbourne suburb of Clayton left a 28-year-old man requiring plastic surgery to repair facial lacerations and another man in hospital with wounds to his ear.

Detective Senior Constable Dean Trigger said one of the men had stepped outside the community hall to have a cigarette when he saw a friend being set upon by a group of up to 15 men.
 

"He has gone to help and was attacked by these males as well," Detective Trigger said.

He said last year's Miss South Sudan event held in Melbourne was also marred by violence.

I don't know about beauty pageant elsewhere (except for the Mr Olympia), but Miss France is a joke, one the tackiest, most ridiculous thing one can watch. Those "groups" are really firing on all cylinders to make the situation between ethnic groups even worse that it is. Who gives a fuck what color and what background is Miss France?  If I remember correctly there was at least two black miss France those last ten years and one arab one. We didn't see black people jump for joy at this occasion.
