Achtung was pretty peaky, too.
Achtung is the best album in their catalog.
and they have many incredible songs post joshua tree, just not as radio friendly:
One (maybe the best song ever)
mysterious ways
even better than the real thing
the fly
stay
lemon
please
gone
beautiful day
city of blinding lights
vertigo (which was a massive #1 hit BUT billboard wasn't including digi downloads at that point)
Bono only uses his voice to punctuate songs, if he wanted to be the focal point of the music, he could be (like most of the singers listed in this thread), but U2 are the consummate "band" and they all have their roles. Soundgarden is about chris cornell, and he is amazing, no doubt. U2 is all about one, singular sound, and are a much more "rhythm" based band.
This vid, and in particular, and bono in particular 410-450, showcase their rare abilities:
Another note, jeff and his dad tim buckley are amazing singers.
And marvin gaye was amazing and stevie wonder can still bring it. he sang for about 10 seconds at the grammy's this year, and sounded better than everyone else winning awards/or that was nominated. he has more talent in one finger than almost every artist performing today.
