"Nose Alone - Londonistan Unchained" - epic D movie bore-fest.
"Nightbear On Elmstreet/Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is more of a cult movie than a horror flick.
Exorcist/Omen/Shining is still spooky.
"The Thing", Carpenter version, is a nice mix of classic horror with some good shock moments and eerie suspense.

"Martyrs", french horror movie from a few years ago was tough, beats the shit outta you.
Evil Dead remake was pretty cool from the most recent ones.

Never got the hype behind the exorcist or the shining. Horror movies to me I don't like because mostly blood and gore, etc. Scary movies I do like as more thought/suspense to them.
Both of those were neither to me. Overhyped, IMO.

Shining was a masterpiece. You had one location (hotel) and 3 people for the most part, what Kubrick created out of this was breathtaking. As spectator you felt trapped in that damn hotel yourself every minute, about to go insane.

My favourite is American Werewolf in London. It has nazi monsters doing a home invasion, Jenny Agutter's tits and an ace soundtrack.

Dug out the original nightmare on elm street DVD just recently and couldn't believe how lame it was, rembered it as being far,far better.

A lotta movies age very bad, few are timeless. Those are called classics. Shining is one of them, also Psycho from Hitchcock (60s), still works today.
Watched some scenes from "Blade 1" recently, couldn't believe it. The special effects, pure comedy! Damn it looks so bad (used to be the coolest flick ever in the late 90s)

Shining was a masterpiece. You had one location (hotel) and 3 people for the most part, what Kubrick created out of this was breathtaking. As spectator you felt trapped in that damn hotel yourself every minute, about to go insane.
Many folks do not care or don't have the mental capacity to appreciate all the detail/thought and hard work that went into the Shining. If they like it then it's because it triggered their subconscious.
Only after watching Rob Ager's work on it I could start to fathom why Kubrick was simply "one of a kind".

"The Exorcist" is only scary to Catholics and others who were raised to think demons might exist. The movie is a metaphor for the mental state of a reluctant parent.
"The Shining" is the GOAT. Creepy, well-made, gives everyone the heebie-jeebies. King didn't like it because the story was written during his darkest drinking days, and it hits a little close to home in regards to the violence towards the boy and wife. I'm sure he was channelling a lot of his own dark fantasy into that book, whether he was aware of it or not. No wonder he finds it unsettling and distasteful.
If you want real-life horror, watch a documentary called "Jesus Camp". That will freeze your veins. Those poor kids.
Tension-type horror, check out "The Descent".
Unrelenting, take it to the next level, watch at your own risk, don't say I didn't warn you horror, see "A Serbian Film".
For lighter fare, "Exorcist III" is not bad at all. Some classic scenes in that film. I also like "The Omen" (original version).

The only movie that gave me a sleepless night in the past 10 years and made me feel really, really uneasy for a couple of days was "Martyrs". French movie and not so well known, but this one really punches the shit outta you (and I was a grown man when I watched this). Don't even wanna think about that flick again :-\

The Exorcist, The Fog and The Shining scared the crap out of me as a kid. The exorcist really bothered me because I don't live too far from where it was filmed and my father worked in georgetown not too far from the steps blah blah blah...so its left a mark on me.
Salems Lot (a miniseries) scared the crap out of me too.

It was the reality that a creature like that really exists... AND it could be right next to you or underneath you while you're swimming only 50-100 yards from the beach.

Yeah, the whole movie was pretty lame except for one scene, and that didn't shock me, it rather pissed me off big time! That was the scene where they killed the giant turtle, as it was no special effect, they really killed the animals back then on camera in that f*ed up cannibal movies from the 70s (animal snuff scenes) as they had no money for the special effects. ::)

Yeah, that's you and me, but think about the folks who get spooked by crap like "Paranormal Activity" or those "Insidious" movies. There are certain, ahem, themes in "A Serbian Film" that would significantly disturb them.

Will do! Thanks for the recommendations. I've read Communion and Confirmation by Whitley Strieber. Both give really off setting tones on alien abduction.

The first half was fairly enjoyable, a hard, but normal horror film, but the second half became literally unbearable. Every more minute it became worse, you felt the suffering of the girl literally on your own body, and were almost relieved when the bitch finally died. Passion of the Christ was kids stuff compared to that.
I was about to turn off, to puke and idK what else, somehow I made it to the end (watching it alone didn't make it easier I guess). And I was well in my 20s watching that movie. Didn't sleep the night either. But I loved the "ending twist", a lotta room for speculation and interpretation ;D

The horror/noir movie that scared me the most was and is masterpiece Deep Red by Dario Argento, by far no comparison, Phenomena was also pretty disturbing... Most hopeless feeling always Dawn Of The Dead 1978 (Romero's best imo) with Goblin soundtrack... Recently i would say Paranormal Activity was pretty uneasy and scary...

1978 Dawn Of The Dead is the best zombie movie ever in my opinion, it has everything... The 2004 remake was decent but not even close, plus i fucking hate running zombies...

I forst saw Frankenhooker on HBO as a kid, and it was immediately followed by a movie called "Him & Me," where a guy hates that his dick does allthe thinking for him, and the dick, sick of being badmouthed, leaves. So the guy spends most of the movie bonerless and then eventually they make friends again and his boner comes back. Not an X-rated movie and no actual shots of boners. Just a lot of pants-height POV, kind of like when they do puppy-cam, only better. HILARIOUS

In general I'm not a horror fan - because I'm a pussy and get scared and stay up at night just staring at the ceiling lol
But horror movies that I have enjoyed:
1. 28 days later
2. Dawn of the dead (the remake - never saw the original)
3. The Shining (to be fair I had read the book before)
4. The Mist (Not super scary but fucked up ending in the movie version - I had also read the book before)
5. I am Legend - Not really a horror movie but It scared the shit out of me nonetheless!
6. Alien - YES!!!
7. Bram Stokers Dracula - Just because I love how it brings in the history of Vlad the Impaler
8. Signs - not super scary or anything but really erked me out!
9. Fire in the Sky - not a horror movie by any account... BUT THERE IS THAT ONE SCENE!!!
A couple of comments on what you guys posted (Full disclosure: I haven't seen any of those below, just read about them):
A Serbian Film - Everyone and Anyone will confirm there is no plot or story or point - its just someone trying to get major shock out of the audience.

But horror movies that I have enjoyed:
1. 28 days later
2. Dawn of the dead (the remake - never saw the original)
3. The Shining (to be fair I had read the book before)
4. The Mist (Not super scary but fucked up ending in the movie version - I had also read the book before)
5. I am Legend - Not really a horror movie but It scared the shit out of me nonetheless!
6. Alien - YES!!!
7. Bram Stokers Dracula - Just because I love how it brings in the history of Vlad the Impaler
8. Signs - not super scary or anything but really erked me out!
9. Fire in the Sky - not a horror movie by any account... BUT THERE IS THAT ONE SCENE!!!

nightmare on elm street,wow u just brought back some great memories for me. it happenend in 88,i met some broad from woodbridge,nj,she lived near the mall actually. me and her used to watch freddy on my tv alot,we had a few tapes of the nightmare on elm street series.we would go to brooklyn and cop some kick ass skunk weed then hit up chinese take out resteraunt and order about 75 bucks worth of food,we would get stoned about hour before food was ready and we would eat n then fuck for 30 minutes or so,then eat again and smoke some more herb than start fucking again. best days of my life,miss it bad

Most need to understand, it was 1973 and this movie was the first of it's kind. People were literally fainting and throwing up in the theaters.

IMO, the 70's was the best decade for all types of movies... The Godfather, Poseidon Adventure, The Exorcist, Young Frankenstein, Jaws, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Next, Rocky, Star Wars, Alien, etc. All fantastic movies and most of them had great soundtracks too.

I was a pro swimmer, still open water in the sea was always giving me uneasy feelings, still does of course... Like something lurking under that dark water, you watch down and you see a mouth full of sharp teeth ready to feast with your body... I would probably die of fear, lol...

1978 Dawn Of The Dead is the best zombie movie ever in my opinion, it has everything... The 2004 remake was decent but not even close, plus i fucking hate running zombies...

Not horror, but dark. Two I just streamed on Netflix and enjoyed quite a bit.
Sightseers - British black comedy, I guess. Much more black than comedy, though. Natural Born Killers-type couple on a murderous vacation. Both deranged oddballs. 7/10
Snowtown Murders - Extremely dark and disturbing biopic of Australia's most notorious serial killer. Some super tense scenes involving a few severely damaged mutherfuckers. Very well done. 8/10

But I always make sure to watch my favorite scary stuff at least once throughout the year.
Except The Exorcist, saw it once as a child and never, ever wanted to see it again. Still haven't watched it a second time in all these years.

Only the possession itself. They framed it within a court case, though, which I thought added a unique angle. Great film.

This one was a weird one but it had a pretty scary monster. It was an alien hunting humans in LA. Possibly the idea for Predator? Also another strange on was Xtro. Made no sense but had frightening images for it's time.

Alien is one of my top five horror films. I saw it a day or so after it opened in Times Square at the old Criterion cinema. It was late May - warm - and the cinema's AC was out, so it was humid and a mist formed above all our heads. This created quite the ambience for viewing the film.
Alien was based on the 1958 film, "It! The Terror from Beyond Space." Major plot points were reused in Alien.

The classics already mentioned first: Night of the Living Dead, Exorcist, Shining, Halloween, The Omen, and The Changeling in particular. All fantastic. But The Innocents, too. Creepy as hell b&w, '61 gem based on Turn of the Screw. Eerily suspenseful, must see ghost story. Don't Look Now, a genre-bending mindfuck, but so psychologically disturbing I'm including it here. Polanski's Repulsion, too, same category as DLN, same terrifying creepiness. Finally, Woman in Black, the original. Best horror ever made for TV.
Now Alien is amazing, but it's too sci-fi for me to include in the genre. Could be wrong.
More recent: Jacob's Ladder, Event Horizon, The Others, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity (probably the two that affected me the most, fuck the bandwagon critics), The Descent, Rec, 28 Days Later, The Devil's Backbone, and SESSION FUCKING 9 for the love of God! By far the most underrated masterpiece of modern horror.
Honorable mention: The Wicker Man (original, of course), The Ring (remake), The Strangers, Sinister, and The Conjuring. Maybe Stir of Echoes, too.
Probably forgetting a few, but for the most part, these all have something my horror snobbishness requires: They're smart, and they put a premium on atmosphere, suspense, and psychological fuckery. And they don't try to mix funny with scary, I hate that shit. Not that it can't work (Shaun of the Dead, for instance), but it's a whole other animal.

Session 9 was a pretty damn good movie! I remember first watching it years ago. I read it was filmed at an actual haunted mental asylum.

The classics already mentioned first: Night of the Living Dead, Exorcist, Shining, Halloween, The Omen, and The Changeling in particular. All fantastic. But The Innocents, too. Creepy as hell b&w, '61 gem based on Turn of the Screw. Eerily suspenseful, must see ghost story. Don't Look Now, a genre-bending mindfuck, but so psychologically disturbing I'm including it here. Polanski's Repulsion, too, same category as DLN, same terrifying creepiness. Finally, Woman in Black, the original. Best horror ever made for TV.
Now Alien is amazing, but it's too sci-fi for me to include in the genre. Could be wrong.
More recent: Jacob's Ladder, Event Horizon, The Others, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity (probably the two that affected me the most, fuck the bandwagon critics), The Descent, Rec, 28 Days Later, The Devil's Backbone, and SESSION FUCKING 9 for the love of God! By far the most underrated masterpiece of modern horror.
Honorable mention: The Wicker Man (original, of course), The Ring (remake), The Strangers, Sinister, and The Conjuring. Maybe Stir of Echoes, too.

A creepy low budget slow burn that's pretty good is "an american ghost story" reviews aren't too good but worth the creep factor. Also "bell witch haunting" not the best but imo good entertainment

My favourite is American Werewolf in London. It has nazi monsters doing a home invasion, Jenny Agutter's tits and an ace soundtrack.

I agree. Those are the types I like generally. Usually once the creature or whatever is seen becomes much more of a letdown and laughable/cheesy in some cases.
And wasn't filled with gratuitous gore as a shock tactic to keep people's attention.

I loved it, too, but it all comes down to taste, so I'd never try to debate or convince a critic. A big part was that the shaky-cam 'found footage' thing was totally new to me in '99, which added a sense of documentary-type realism. Totally clicked for me, especially in this genre (one of my faves), which needed a fresh approach.
The other thing was that, for me, it got closer to recreating the worst kind of nightmare than anything I'd seen before. Literal nightmare, I mean, which can often be more psychologically terrifying than anything you experience in real life. Something evil is after you, but you never really see it.
I sorta get why some hate it, especially if they're only seeing it now for the first time. The style is totally played out, and there isn't a whole lot of "horror" happening on screen; it's all suggested through the horrified reactions of the "crew." Plus, when the haters list the movies that did scare them, I usually hate those. So, again, we're just back to taste.

Excellent film. One of the creepiest, best jump scenes in all horror.
And sequels are usually just half-assed money grabs, capitalizing on the original's success. I only do sequels if the original (or equivalent) talent is involved.

I think it's the 1978 version I liked but it's been awhile. I don't remember the original. I went to many a drive in. Remember how many speakers were missing or broken because people forgot they were on their car and drove away? The original Night of The Living Dead still holds up and it's the movie that started this crazy zombie fad.

Very much so, the guy shows it in the vid I posted. Different businesses now, obviously, but same layout and such. Think they call this triangular island Kersting Ct. or Town Square, not sure. Craziest part is the bottom pic (from the movie) was filmed from my buddy's old apartment (or his next door neighbor's).

yeah. Thats what was so disturing about that movie... they actually made the visage of hell terrifying, instead of just people suffering in fire, some of the scenes were just.... unsettling.
Like the dude impaled on the barb wire wrapped stick, with his guts coming out of his mouth stuck wrapped around the stick stuck in the wire.. but still alive and suffering.

As long as the movie is fake enough with well known actors and CGI effects, I can't really take it serious or get creeped out by them. For me, most disturbing horror films cross a line or build so much suspense by what you don't see your imagination makes it worse (or better ;-) than u thought:

I regretfully never got to play the first one. But the second one was truly a masterpiece. I must have played through it close to 20 times trying to get all the different endings. My brother was unable to finish it. Once he got to the hospital it was too scary for him to play anymore.

I loved that game. My first real horror game. That one part at the beginning of the game where you're introduced to the zombies by a cut scene. Where it shows the zombie eating someone and then slowly turns around to face you. That part would immediately make my brother high tail it right out of the room. ;D
