;D it ain't looking too good for the phightin phillies this year, roy halladay got lit up in a major way yesterday . i know it's pre-season but this was against detroit tiger scrubs. he only hit 86-88 mph on the gun, he better take jamie moyer lessons in a hurry. the good news is he felt good after the diasterous outing.

Disgrace of a franchise.
truer words were never spoken, this team would hardly be competive in triple a. ed wade destroyed this franchise with the help of others. long gone are the days of the killer "B's"

braves 8-1 great start for a team not afraid to go young or putting their farm system to good use. chipper who?

Small sample of course, but Toronto's big acquisitions are having a tough transition to the AL so far.

ya not good so far.
i said from day 1 of their aquisitions, you can have all the talent in the world on one team....but unless they smesh and play well together(and yes adjust to new league) it just doesnt matter . Its only been 9 games so we'll see if they get it worked out.
im really enjoying watching Reyes play

Slump was bound to happen. I still expect their pitching will crush pretty much everything in the NL when it's all over if they stay healthy.

as a lifelong phillie fan , i'm not real big on the braves, but you have to admire the organization they do stuff the right way. not afraid to use their farm system. a lot of homegrowns have made it down thru the years.

phils lose to indians 14-2 what a drubbing 7 hrs by the tribe. roy halladay looked like he was throwing batting practice the way they were teeing off. :o :o :o :o

angels and dodgers might be right there with them. ;D

Jays made those trades and built them up. I don't think they've even won a series yet this year. Getting their asses kicked by divisional opponents.

Thats partly because Dickey blows, and Reyes got hurt.

Texas sweeps The Red Sox in 3 games and have just taken the top position in the ESPN Power Rankings. Best team in baseball right now, bar none.
They should be getting Colby Lewis and Martin Perez back from injuries within a week or so but no idea how they are going to fit into the pitching rotation since the young guys have stepped up but that's the problem you love to have!
-
Wish Texas would call up Profar. Dervish is looking to be well worth the risk.

Would be nice but no place to put him right now with Kinsler killing the ball at 2nd and Andrus at SS
Darvish, 127 pitches with 14 strikeouts today plus most strikeouts in baseball is nice too . 8)

texas is not afraid to let a pitcher's pitch count get up above the norm, due mainly to nolan ryan's influence. nolan once threw 235 pitches in a game and look how long he lasted.

Yanks in first.

Yankees also have Granderson returning next week. Hoping they keep Wells in the lineup, and move Ichiro! to the bench.

Exactly. Jon Daniels deserves credit for bringing in the overall talent but Nolan Ryan was definitely the biggest factor in changing the pitching culture by making it an expectation for starters to pitch deep in games.
235 pitches...fucking insane.

meh.

Justin Verlander vs. Yu Darvish this upcoming Thursday. Should be a great pitching duel.

Texas Rangers win 3 out 4 versus the defending AL Champs Detroit Tigers. Still have the best record in baseball with 60% of last years starting pitching staff injured(young pitchers stepping up in their place) and just called up MLBs number one prospect, Jurikson Profar. Deepest organization in baseball.
-
I used a FBB draft pick on Mr. Profar and have been waiting for this. Of course, I didn't start him this week, but plan to if he stays up.
Outside of Darvish, we'll have to see if the SP holds up.

Outside of a super utility role I just don't see how Profar stays up for any extended period of time unless he just comes in and forces himself to stay by playing incredible. Washington has already stated he wants Profar getting regular at bats and with Kinsler on only a 15 day DL batting .302 and playing at a very high level coupled with 1st baseman Mitch Moreland being on a ridiculous tear, hitting something like .375 in the last month with 10 homers for the season, it's going to be hard to find a place for Profar. The original thought was move Kinsler to 1st but how do you sit Moreland who has been crushing the ball?
The only potential spot I see is replacing a struggling left fielder, David Murphy...but I'm not even sure Profar has been getting any work in the outfield.
Profar is batting 9th tonight, should be interesting.
-

A bad contract on an aging player can really be detrimental to a team in a couple ways. Financially of course because money is guaranteed but also it can hurt the developmental phase with some of the younger guys coming up. No doubt GM Jon Daniels wanted to keep Hamilton and also wanted to sign Greinke BUT only at the right price and also keeping in mind that he had full confidence in his farm system, and it has paid off.

Yeah that's been the talk. Either a starting pitcher or a power hitting corner outfielder. This goes without saying but prospects can have a great deal of trade value because of their financial value to an organization. Getting a great talent at a cheap price for 5 or 6 years is highly coveted. Profar could be one helluva chip in a trade. The talk around here is a package including Profar for either David Price or Stanton with the Marlins. Of course some of that is sports radio fodder but Darvish/Price for the next 3 years?? Very tempting!
-
That would be a heck of a 1-2. Stanton is interesting, and work rake in Arlington, but I think an elite 2b is inherently more valuable than an elite hitting OF, especially give. Stanton's injury history.
I also think Price could be one of the rare instances where Tampa pays, but who knows.
-

Profar at second would be great, don't get me wrong but Kinsler is only 30, already locked up for several more years and is really excelling in that lead off role. He's already had two 30/30 seasons. You combine that track record with a solid batting average this year and it just makes it tough for Profar to break into that middle infield. If Kinsler plays to his ability I am every bit as excited with him and Andrus over the next 4 years but then again Profar/Andrus for the next 10 years has a good ring to it as well ;D The again, if Profar steps in and lights it up his trade value will never be higher.
Although Kinsler will give you the occasional bone head defensive play that just leaves you shaking your head at times >:(
-
The again, if Profar steps in and lights it up his trade value will never be higher.
I agree with this 100%. I'm a big believer in a good farm system, but I also believe all prospects suck until they.....don't. In other words, if they can be traded for established elite talent, you do it.

From what I have heard he's just as dominant as he's ever been. Pretty spectacular.

I watched every save this year. His control is still there, and the velocity is holding around 91, but I've seen it amped to 92-93. Even though it's not at 96 anymore, as long as the pitch is not flat, it's still going to be very difficult to hit.
This video is pretty cool at showing how he does it.

Great video. I always wondered how some of these closers can still be successful after losing a good amount of velocity but I suppose with that dynamic cutter action he can still be effective. He almost seems like a knuckleballer in the sense that he could stick around for a few more years because he doesn't necessarily need mid 90's velocity to be effective.

I think it's a fair statement.
This is not nearly the same for obvious reasons, but I've faced some pitchers in fast pitch softball who could hit their hip on the release, generating side spin that acted like a cutter. As a lefty, I can recall seeing pitches that looked fat when I swung, but hit right above my hands which produced a weak grounder to second. That's at 60mph. At 90+, I can't even imagine it.

phightin' phils stinking it up lately, dominic brown 10 homers and 29 rbi's said to be lone bright spot offensively.

Yeah it's a whole nother world at 90 miles per hour. I never knew softball pitchers could create that kind of action to begin with haha but then again I never really played beyond little league :)
Alot of the top closers kinda faltering at this point in the season.

Cowherd said that was the first time in his career he failed to even get someone out during a save opportunity. Pretty incredible. I don't know what one blown save really does but there was Cy young and "starting the all star game" talk prior to yesterday.

I hope so. They have talent in the starting rotation, just no consistency. Hammel and Tillman(7-2) have been the most steady. The offense has been mainly winning their games. If they're within 5 games of first place by the trading deadline, I guarantee they make a move.

I like Matusz way better as a late inning/set up relief pitcher than as a starter. Much more effective and he sets up Johnson well to close games out.

cliff lee 9-2 phils tie for 2nd in division again woooowhooooo
I'm putting in the call right now....Cliff Lee is a Texas Ranger within 6 weeks. 8)
Number one priority for Texas is a top of the rotation starter to go with Darvish and Jon Daniels is a man who likes to make moves.
Including trading away Chris Davis unfortunately :'( :-X >:(
-
Do you give up Profar for him?
-
Do you give up Profar for him?
I think so. What's Lee got left? 4 years on his contract? That gives you a 4 year span with Darvish/Lee at the top of your rotation and Holland/Harrison also locked up for multiple years. Plus the bullpen which has been the strength of the team thus far has some really promising young talent( Robbie Ross, Tanner Scheppers, Martin Perez)
With that level of pitching you are going to be in the hunt pretty much every year. As I stated before I'm a big fan of Ian Kinsler, he's basically the heart of this team plus that power at second base is rare. And with Ian and Elvis Andrus locked up also for multiple years I say you trade Profar for either a starting pitcher or corner outfielder with good power. As much as I love Profar's upside I just don't think his value is with this team in the short term future.

i can see this happening, esp with paplebum losing trade value by the day. last night phils win brown hits numero 20 plus 4 rbis.kendrick the win 7-4.amaro is scrambling for his job. manuel will be let go soon. sandberg may finally get his chance.

I'm surprised he's this bad.

Haha true true. You would be hard pressed to find a starting position on another American League roster for ANY of those guys. Hell, you could almost throw ichiro in there as well at this stage of his career.

You're right about that.
They've done well with what they have, but if they don't get Granderson/Jeter/Arod back AND add a bat, they'll slip out it.
Although Pineda could be a big factor.

phils get tons of hits only 4 runs and lose, delmon young's 4 for 4 added up to zero. utley hr brown number 21. and bad news darren daulton brain tumors will be operated on next week. sad. this makes the fifth phillie from that era to have brain cancer, johnny oates, ken brett, tug mcgraw, john vukovich. :( :( :(

state of the phillies at the all-star break= 48 and 48 a 500 record. last year team was with a late push 81-81, guess there just a mediocre team now.
-
Just sitting here depressed watching Chris Davis hit an ungodly amount of home runs and wondering "who in the hell is this guy!?!?!!"
I watched this guy struggle OVER and OVER with the Rangers, then traded for a decent reliever and all of the sudden he is hitting like the second coming of Babe Ruth. That has got to be one of the all time worse trades in Texas Rangers history and there have been plenty of those!
How does anyone explain this? Anybody thinking PEDs or just a case of new scenery in Baltimore? This really is a pretty amazing story when looked at with a critical eye. What's he on pace for? High 60s in home runs for the season??

How does anyone explain this? Anybody thinking PEDs or just a case of new scenery in Baltimore. This really is a pretty amazing story when looked at with a critical eye. What's he on pace for? High 60s in home runs for the season??
He is on pace with the Mark McGwire season.

I watched him daily. He was "that guy" who you were constantly pissed over the strikeouts and pop outs. ALWAYS being forced down to Triple A where he would light it up like a champ then come right back up and struggle. Over and over this cycle went for several years. What an amazing story. As someone who has followed his career so closely during the bad times it's almost surreal.

Sometimes, after a few years in the majors, a light just turns on inside a ball player's head. Chris is seeing the ball so well and is a much more disciplined hitter. And I don't think Chris uses PED's. Just a corn-fed country strong white boy from Texas. Baltimore will have to break the bank to re-sign him and I hope he doesn't pull a bitch move and sign with the Yankees next year. He is line to make some serious $$$ after this season. AND he's also a good right fielder which adds to his versatility.
He's actually on pace for the TRUE home run record. Roger Maris' 61.

Yeah you're right about the strong white boy part. Even during his worse struggles that guy used to KILL the ball in batting practice. Some say he just wanted it so bad with the rangers, growing up a couple hours down the road in Longview(I think) that it just messed with his mental aspect. I am truly happy for the dude though, by all accounts just a stand up individual. I just wish it was me at the ball park in Arlington watching all these jacks!!! >:( :'(

Out of context years happen all the time. Check out Chase Headley last year, or Ellsbury 2011. Luck plays such a ridiculous factor in baseball, and sometimes the planets align for a season for some of these guys.

He's making a lot panties get wet with the ladies around here in Baltimore. If you go to Orioles game these days in the summer, there are dozens of young ladies barring major cleavage and booty shorts in the stands screaming for him.
-
Mclouth/Weiters/Davis/Jones/Markakis/Machado/Hardy........
They should be all over Philly for Lee right now.

I think it might be an East Texas Piney Woods thing. Lufkin, Longview, Houston, :) He's from the same region as Adrian Peterson and Dez Bryant...a ton of freakish type athletes from that region plus chicks always dig the long ball. 8)
I think Chris just needs to stay right where he's at and keep that comfort level high and just roll with it. Don't even bother with the hometown pressures of Texas or that New York media. Dude needs to sign long term in Baltimore.

there's a whole host of guys who had one great season in a career, it's the consistancy that sets the stars apart davis had 33 homers last year so who knows maybe he'll be consistant from here on in. book called one shining season chronicles many of these stories off the top of my head i remember lee thomas was one player included in this book.
-
on that topic look at roger maris's career one great year a couple good years and some average years. 28, 39, 61,33, 26, homer seasons 2 mvps, 275 hrs for career.

This whole conversation is making me so fucking depressed.
Okay, poly quit bitching! :D

I hope they make a play for him. The birds need another arm besides adding Feldman for the stretch run. They could have a great rotation with Tillman, Lee, Feldman, and Gonzalez.

yankees acquire alfonso soriano from cubs. he's now a yankee again. ;D ;D ;D. phillies stunk it up in st louis now to detroit.

Not thrilled with it, but it's definitely an upgrade over the dreck they're throwing out there, and he costs them basically nothing next year.
IF/IF Jeter/Arod/Granderson return soon, that lineup could be much better.
Yankees lost their starting 3B/SS/1B/CF/C for most of this year. They should not even be in contention.

true hard to believe they still got a shot. in phillytown phillies humiliated in detroit 10-0 yesterday scherzer now 15-1. phillies spend 48 million[deal coyld actually be worth more} for cuban pitcher miquel gonzalez listed at age 26[?????????????},hard to believe they once spent 1.2 million in the uinternational market back in 2001 when guy pitcher didn't make the bigs scout who recommended him was fired and phillies stayed away from international talent.
-
jeets is back again 2 for 4 so far with a homer, soriano 2 for 3 with a homer. phils 12-3 loooooooooosing again at least they scored 3 runs eigth inning.

Just have the phils trade us Utley to play 3rd for the rest of the year.

Texas Rangers sweep the Angels including 3 straight victories by walk off home run. Been a fun week to watch!
Texas has arguably the best pitching staff in the AL but the bats have got to warm up of they are gonna have a chance to make some noise this October. Should be getting Feliz, Harrison and Lewis back to bolster the rotation/bullpen within the next few weeks.

I like your stuff poly, but I don't think Texas hs the best staff in the AL.
Without digging into the data, I'd put them behind Tampa/Oakland/Detroit and NY.....maybe even others.

I feel the same way about yours on here as well 8)
Can't get too in depth in geek mode with stats and all that cause I'm typing on my phone but just to keep it basic I'll throw era numbers out there. I don't think I could have made the statement I did 2 weeks ago but with the addition of Garza who has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball the last couple months plus a (for now) healthy Ogando I think I can.
AL leaders in ERA has The Rangers with 3 starting pitchers in the top 12 (Darvish, Garza, Holland). If you add Ogando's 3.05 era that's 4 starting pitchers in the top 13. No other team even comes close to matching that. I think a weak point with my argument is Ogando has to stay on the field and maintain that level of productivity. At the 5 spot there's Martin Perez, a 22 year old lefty with a ton of upside but will still shit the bed on ya so he could be a wash. Pitches a one run game into the 8th versus the angels last night then might implode the next.
Team relief pitching ERA has Texas ranked 4th currently. That's why I tend to downgrade Detroit overall because their bullpen is average to slightly below average. Detroit's starting rotation is probably the best rotation in the AL though. I think Oakland's bullpen is a slight notch above texas...maybe... but they can't match Texas starting rotation at this point. I'd love to hear arguments with TB and NYY though. Kuroda is a great pitcher but they drop off after that and TB's bullpen is pretty average. I don't necessarily think Texas is clearly the best pitching staff but I think it could be argued.
I really believe Darvish and Holland would both be close to 15 game winners at this point but Texas just flat out cannot hit the damn baseball and unless some miracle occurs between now and October they are going to crash and burn. I don't think anything is more frustrating as a fan than watching your team put together a top level pitching staff and STILL lose because of horrendous hitting. I think they just had a stretch where they went something like 24 straight innings without a run. Just terrible.
-
Yu Darvish pitches his 4th 14 strikeout game of the season. To put that into perspective only 2 other major league pitchers have had ONE game with 14 strikeouts...Chris Sale of the White Sox and Sanchez of the Tigers.
Heard another stat on the radio, Darvish has recorded at least 10 strikeouts in 16 of his first 50 games. Second most in the modern era (since 1900). Dwight gooden is first at 20.
Thankfully Yu has no known drug issues like the doc :)

I worry about his pitch efficiency at times. It took him almost 115 to get through 7 innings last night and he regularly throws in the 110 to 120 range but from what I've heard he would throw around 130 pitches a game at times in Japan and it hasn't seemed to affect him so far.
I seen that gif before. Really cool. Yu is just a unique guy that is hard to compare with anyone else. Mound presence, variety of pitches and strikeout ability. Should be really fun to watch for years to come.

trade deadline was a big joke, practically no movement of note at all. gone are the days of jose canseco for ruben sierra was the start of mega deals.

That's the new reality, as teams aren't going to take on as many players who would leave at the end of the year for free agency, as they don't get draft picks any more.
-
emotional night at cbp curt schilling got on the wall of fame, dutch daulton was in attendance surprisingly as he's trying to combat brain cancer. as usual the phillies ruined the moment and lost 6-4 now in a tie for third with the dreadful mets.
-
phillies 2 wins 13 loses since the all-star break, welcome to the dark years. maybe they are trying to break the all-time record for consecutive loses, which is 23 by the woeful 1961 phillies.
-
phils actually won another game but they tried their darnedness not to= 9-5 lead in the ninth became 9-8 with runners on first and third all this with two outs, another stellar performance from jonathen paplebum. :'( :'( :'( :'(

I hate the second wild card.
Even though it's basically the only chance my Yankees have of making the post season, it's ridiculous that teams playing at the level they are have a shot, when other teams are much more deserving.
It's going to be a sad baseball day when an 81 win team eliminates a 93 win team.

What makes you think an 81 win team could qualify for the 2nd wildcard in the first place? Tampa Bay, Texas, O's , and Indians look like they're going to clear 90 wins this year and be in the running for that spot. I'd say 85 wins would be the bare minimum to have a shot but a .500 team? Don't see that happening unless they come up with a 3rd wildcard.

I'm not basing it solely on this year, but the point wasn't to get into that level of specificity. But, to use your example, make it an 85 win team beating a 95 win team. My opinion doesnt change.
The vagaries of baseball make it as much luck and timing as it is skill when played in samll samples. 10 wins is enormous of the course of a season, and a team should not have to play a one game playoff with a team that performed so much worse.

Bro....it's the same as football......a 9-7 division winner would host a 12-4 wild card team. that's just how it goes. And I'm sure you wern't complaining when your 9-7 Giants won the division, got to host a playoff game, and ultimately won the superbowl as a 9 win team.
I'm sure you will argue that it's not the same but I think it is.

Not an argument, just a discussion. I like your views on shit, and if we all felt the same, this would suck.
The difference for me in the football sample is the 162 game vs. 16 game season. Football is always about one game. Baseball is about series, and the grind over the long haul. Teams can be structured very differently, each one advantageous based on sample size. A team with 2 "A" pitchers and 2 "Cs" and a "D" would have the advantage in a short series over a team with 5 "Bs", but the 5 B team would do better over 162. That's just a basic example, as I know hitting, etc. is invovled. But the point is, it is a grind, and the team that plays the best over that grind by a wide margin shouldn't have a one game playoff. Baseball doesn't work like that.

I see your point. For instance, I hated that the NBA playoff format in the first round was best 3 out of 5 after an 82 game season. But ironically.....Now that the format has changed to best 4 out of 7 in the first, it seems like too many games because they space out too many days in between the games.
-

Exactly. I felt the same way about the 3 out of 5 in t he Division Seriers rounds of baseball, and still do.

I agree. I feel that the 3 out of 5 division format always is to the benefit of the underdog because of the points you made in your earlier post.

the only thing i like about the second wild caed is that the two teams usually use their best pitcher. this gives an advantage to the teams that win the divisions. otherwise they the wildcard team had little disadvantage.

look at football if you have a weak division 7-9 makes it. i rember the patriots going 11-5 and not making playoffs. giants 9-7 win superbowl 16-0 meaniless.

Actually, the harder the division, the more likely you will have a 9-7 or 8-8 team will make the playoffs.
I do not recall a 7-9 team making the playoffs, but I guess it may have happened in the past.

Seattle did it a couple of seasons ago. Won the NFC west at 7-9 AND beat the defending champs N.O. Saints in a playoff game that they HOSTED.

Not sure about other states but in Texas high school football I have seen teams go 3 and 7 get in by losing all their non district games, which don't count, then winning against weak inter divisional opponents. I think even a 2 and 8 team can get in but can't remember it happening.
In a stacked division like in the Houston area or the Odessa Midland area of the 80s you could theoretically have 3 teams tied at 9 and 1 and one of those wouldn't even get in by virtue of "only 2 allowed entrance requirement" although I think they changed that rule a few years ago.
Imagine going 9 and 1 and MISSING the playoffs! :-[

That must be the only time in history... It's not like that kind of thing can happen often... Maybe once every 50 - 60 years?

First time it's ever happened in the NFL since they went to a 16 game season.

Yu Darvish strikes out a career high 15, loses the perfect game in the 6th(after a blatant missed strike call) then the no hitter in the 8th as Texas goes on to retain a 1 game lead in the AL West.
Yu is on target to have the 3rd highest total in strikeouts for a players second season..probably will end up just below Dwight Gooden's total.

1967 Colts were 11-1-2, missed the playoffs (only division champions went to the playoffs at that time, and the Rams won the division at 12-1-1...only to be beaten by the 9-4-1 Packers, who then won the Ice Bowl, then Super Bowl II)
1987 Twins won the World Series at 85-78...one of the recent Cardinals teams that won the WS was even closer to .500 during the season

good find andy. i like to see a team penalized somewhat to get in as a wildcard, in the case of baseball that extra game seems right. you burn your best pitcher putting you at a disadvantage in the next round.

They almost stopped the Dodgers streak a game or 2 ago didn't they? Seems like I heard it was was tied late in the game.
Boy you wanna talk about a red hot team, that's the Dodgers.
-
I was hoping the Dodgers would tank this year for making one of the dumbest trades I'd ever seen - bailing the Red Sox out of two shitty contracts AND giving up prospects to boot.
They're a juggernaut now.
-
I like the new playoff system because it should make teams want to really go all out and win their division...Would suck losing in a one game playoff...Also winning your division will let you set up your pitching starters for the playoffs. Having to win a one game playoff will make teams have to re-think throwing out their ace...Many different scenario's now come into play...

they had a 42 wins and 8 losses last 50 games before the phillies snapped their 10 game winning streak. best since the 1942 reds went 42-8 in a 50 game span. i remember a tigers team in the mid 80's started off 35 wins and 5 losses played 500 ball rest of season and cruised to playoffs.
-

True...But in most cases only until the trade deadline...
If a team is 8 to 10 games back at the trade deadline in August, without the second wild card, teams would sell off...Now there's a better chance that these teams make some moves to try to win that wildcard instead of selling off...Also if a team gets a double digit lead in their division by the All-star break and there's no 2nd wild card, every team in that division would most likely start to think sell off mode which basically is saying "we're throwing in the towel"...Now there's a better chance of that not happening imop...Those one game make it or break it playoff games are bound to be the most exciting games in baseball...I do think a 2 out of 3 series makes more sense but no doubt 1 game all or nothing will be some great baseball...
-
phils win 8 out of last 11 under sandberg , hope in phillies land for next year. it's funny in his interviews ryne s comes off as a quiet guy. but guy drops bombshells when he talks in his own quiet way.

Go Pirates and Tampa.
Of course, it could be Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh which could have the lowest ratings ever.
