“The depths to which Democrats are sinking to politicize coronavirus is disgusting," Republican National Committee Rapid Response Director Steve Guest said in a statement to Fox News on Tuesday. "Democrat leaders, both nationally and in Colorado, need to condemn this deranged comment.”

The back and forth comes as the federal government grapples with the outbreak. Trump, over the weekend, authorized new travel restrictions and warnings in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The administration’s strict travel warning affects Iran, Italy and South Korea at this point.

Schumer Threatens the Court
The leading Senate Democrat draws a rebuke from Roberts.

Democrats like to accuse President Trump of violating institutional democratic norms, and often he does with his rhetorical broadsides. But at least he’s never directly threatened the U.S. Supreme Court the way Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did on Wednesday.

Speaking to a crowd on the Supreme Court steps, the leading Senate Democrat declared: “I want to tell you, Gorsuch. I want to tell you, Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price.” He meant Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, the newest Justices who were appointed by President Trump.

Mr. Schumer was speaking before abortion-rights activists as the Supreme Court considers whether to curtail the ability of abortion providers to sue on behalf of women seeking abortions—a doctrine known as third-party standing. Mr. Schumer, still addressing Messrs. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, added: “You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

The “whirlwind”? “What hit you”? We won’t go so far as to call that an incitement to violence, but it surely was a threat of political reprisal against the Justices if they don’t vote the way Mr. Schumer wants. Does he mean impeachment or packing the Court?

The remarks drew a rare and pointed public rebuke from Chief Justice John Roberts, who said: “Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.”

Good for the Chief, and we’re not worried about Mr. Schumer intimidating Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. They will ignore the politician and reach their decisions based on the law.

Yet the comments from Mr. Schumer reflect a significant escalation in Democratic efforts to bully the High Court. Last year five Democratic Senators led by Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) submitted a brief in which they effectively threatened to pack the Court if it didn’t rule their way in a Second Amendment case.

Mr. Schumer’s spokesperson also hit back at Chief Justice Roberts for following “the right wing’s deliberate misinterpretation” of what the Senator said on Wednesday. Apparently when Mr. Schumer targeted the two conservative Justices by name he meant “the political price Senate Republicans will pay for putting these justices on the court.” Got it. The statement also says Chief Justice Roberts “does not just call balls and strikes.”

Mr. Trump recently tweeted that liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor should recuse themselves on cases involving his Administration. He was wrong and the Justices will ignore him too. But Mr. Schumer’s tirade takes bullying the judiciary to a new level, and all those who claim to believe in democratic norms should call him out.

A top medical executive at a Buffalo hospital was fired this weekend after demanding that supporters of President Donald Trump renounce ventilators if they become critically ill with coronavirus.

In a Facebook exchange, Laura Krolczyk, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center's now former vice president for external affairs, wrote, "Trump supporters need to pledge to give up their ventilators for someone else ... and not go to the hospital."

Krolczyk also said Trump supporters should "barricade themselves" inside churches to ride out the coronavirus.

"Also don't cash your stimulus check. It's all a hoax. Chew some ibuprofen and be on with your day," Krolczyk wrote of Trump supporters.

Krolczyk was initially placed on administrative leave, but was later terminated over the comments, according to the Buffalo News.

Roswell Park released the following statement announcing Krolczyk's termination, WGRZ-TV reported:

This employee was terminated today [Saturday] after our Human Resources team concluded its investigation. We followed standard procedure, which required that we gather and verify relevant information before taking any disciplinary action.

Dr. Johnson and her team responded with swift and appropriate action. We have always been and continue to be a center serving everyone who needs us. That is core to our mission, our culture and the experience our patients and families can expect every day.

This behavior is not tolerated at Roswell Park. If any team members act in a way that does not accord with that commitment, we will take swift and appropriate action, just as we did in this instance. Krolczyk earned $226,580 in compensation in 2019, the Buffalo News reported.

Krolczyk previously worked for Hillary Clinton and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

Madison protesters tear down Capitol statues, attack state Senator from Milwaukee as fury erupts again

MADISON - Fury exploded outside the Wisconsin State Capitol on Tuesday night as protesters smashed windows at the statehouse, attacked a state senator, and tore down two iconic statues — including one of an abolitionist who died trying to end slavery during the Civil War.

The unrest began earlier Tuesday following the arrest of a Black man who was arrested after bringing a megaphone and a baseball bat into a Capitol square restaurant. It followed weeks of mostly peaceful protests of the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by a white police officer.

It prompted Gov. Tony Evers on Wednesday to put the Wisconsin National Guard on notice to protect state buildings, including the Capitol.

During the melee late Tuesday, Democratic state Sen. Tim Carpenter was assaulted after filming the protesters.

"I don't know what happened ... all I did was stop and take a picture ... and the next thing I'm getting five-six punches, getting kicked in the head," Carpenter told a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter following the assault.

Evers said those responsible for assaulting Carpenter would be held accountable.

"I want to be clear: violence against any person — whether in the middle of the street in broad daylight, at home trying to sleep, going for a run, or happening upon a protest as was the case last night — is wrong," he said in a statement. "It should never be tolerated."

Protesters, chanting for the release of the man who'd been arrested earlier, also broke glass at the Tommy Thompson Center on West Washington Avenue, smashed windows and lights at the state Capitol, and set a small fire at the Dane County jail before police arrived just before 1 a.m.

The violent demonstrations followed the arrest of Devonere Johnson by Madison police officers after Johnson brought a bullhorn and baseball bat into Cooper's Tavern, a restaurant on the Capitol square.

"Officers attempted to place him under arrest for his actions inside the restaurant," the Madison police officers wrote in a report. "Johnson resisted arrest and struggled with officers ... Johnson was able to push past officers and escape from the squad car before being tackled as he attempted to escape."

The destruction followed similar incidents in cities nationwide following the death of Floyd in Minneapolis. But in other cities, statues of Confederate soldiers and other symbols of slavery were destroyed.

In Madison, statues of Wisconsin's motto "Forward" and of Col. Hans Christian Heg were dragged away from their spots guarding the statehouse.

Heg was an anti-slavery activist who fought and died for the Union during the U.S. Civil War. His nearly 100-year-old sculpture was decapitated and thrown into a Madison lake by protesters.

The original Forward statue was first placed in front of the Wisconsin State Capitol in 1895. Protesters tore down a replica that was commissioned in the 1990s.

Forward is "an allegory of devotion and progress," according to the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Madison Police Department said 200 to 300 protesters were within the crowd that ultimately became violent.

The group first entered a private condo building in Madison and surrounded a tow truck, forcing the owner to abandon the vehicle before smashing windows and tearing down the Capitol statues.

A molotov cocktail also was thrown into the Madison and Dane County administration building where the county jail sits.

Police used pepper spray from inside the state Capitol to repel protesters trying to get into the building, according to Madison police.

Tuesday night's violence drew the fury of the Republican leader of the state Assembly, who called the protesters who knocked down the statues "thugs."

"This is absolutely despicable. I am saddened at the cowardice of Madison officials to deal with these thugs," Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, tweeted as the statues were being torn down.

Vos also questioned why Gov. Tony Evers hadn't intervened in the destruction of the statues, given it took place on state Capitol property. Protesters also broke windows of a state building near the Capitol which houses the state jobs agency, among other state offices.

Spokeswomen for Evers and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway did not respond to questions late Tuesday about police force's slow response.

After 1 a.m., a line of about 20 police officers stood in riot gear as a crowd of about 100 remained, breaking into occasional chants; police played a recording stating the gathering was unlawful and telling people to leave.

A Fall River man is facing charges that include a civil rights violation for allegedly assaulting an 82-year-old supporter of President Donald Trump. The victim, Air Force veteran Charles Chase, told police he was holding a pro-Trump sign Tuesday when he was violently attacked.

“The guy when he came at me, I have never seen a horror story that the face was so filled with hate and anger as his was,” Chase said. “I was just frozen.”

Fall River police said that 27-year-old Aidan Courtright got out of his car approached Chase at the rotary of North Main Street and Airport Road, screaming “Give me the fucking sign!”

“Courtright then forcefully ripped the sign out of the victim’s hands, ripped it in half, and threw it on the ground,” police said. “Courtright then went after the victim, grabbing him by his shirt, knocking his hat off, and throwing him violently to the ground.”

Authorities said Courtright kicked the man “with leather pointed shoes,” while he was on the ground, and then drove away. Chase was taken to a hospital to be treated for bruising.
