Although it may fast and technically intricate, that stuff sounds like a bunch of noise to me.
Ever heard of Phil Keaggy? That is guitar playing.

Do you play?
Yep.
Ever fingerpicked an old Martin D-28 or played chord melody on a big Gibson L-5 with flat wounds on it? It's quite an experience.

Very nice man! I still find flat wound 13's are a bit strange to play on after playing round wound for so many years but I was doing the jazz thing for a while a decided to give it a go.
I generally play much heavier stuff than this but I also have a few acoustic originals on my other YouTube channel. Each tune and different musical style is meant to evoke a different feeling.

Phil Keaggy? Oh, you mean the guy that couldn't bend a note properly to save his life? That guy? Gotta love the musical "purists" poo pooing anything that isn't a giant wooden hollow box and playing some retarded jazz/fusion/folk/blues music. Give me a break.
-
Very impressive man, solid work.
Did you record this at home or actually in a studio?
I just remember how much harder for me it was to do it in a studio environment, cause you here EVERY little fuckup, and I didnt hear any fuckups on your part.
Everything sounded good.
Although Im sure you probably have your little "Fuck, I dont like that" parts that nobody else hears, lol.

I had a set of 13's flats (Think they were Dean Markley blue steels) on my Parker when I was younger (HS Jazz band), and they were very different to get used to. I still played metal on the side and it was hilarious.
Was a helluva workout.

X2....some guys are brainwashed that if it isn't "blues based" it's not worth listening to... and they are constantly licking Clapton and SRV's balls. Fuck the blues...seriously, if i never heard another "walking blues" based riff I'd be just fine.

Just me and my pc for recording. I wrote what gear I was using in the credits.
Most of my stuff is single improv takes. I did 4 different solo sections in there I think. I don't really screw up much unless it's an extremely complicated part that I haven't practiced much. I listen to the rhythm and then get an idea in my head before I play. I was writing a song for my band, which is much heavier material with vocals, but the drum track I clicked on was this one, so I stuck with it and came up with this instead.
That being said, my band is covering Hellion/Electric Eye and I kept forgetting the intro run into the solo and it's pretty simple. lol

I was anti-pentatonics for years..lol. I've since changed my ways, but use the pents and blues scale sparingly.
I agree with you too regarding the old 'feel' vs 'technique' thing. Music either appeals to someone or it doesn't, it's purely subjective. I do try and keep a pretty open mind when it comes to music though, no matter what I've written here in the past..hehe.

I wish I could play guitar. I miss the days when almost every rock song had a guitar solo :'(
-
Very nice - catchy and great sound.
What aspects of your playing do you think needs improving?

For someone who claims to be a guitar player/musician, I find your highlighted comment above truly embarrassing. If you don't enjoy electric rock playing, fine, but to say it sounds like noise? Ridiculous.
As far as the playing in the video for this thread, nice work, man.

Thanks. I probably have days worth of material recorded. I'm looking at recording an instrumental ep or possibly full length cd by the end of this year. Same goes for my band, which is my main gig. A cd should be in the works next year with the band I believe.
-
Typical guitar player = always thinking every aspect of his playing "needs work". ;D
I mean, I guess anything can be improved, always, but ... guitar players are funny.
Keep playing, dude! Post other stuff when you have it recorded, please.

Embarrassing? I've played many styles... rock, country, bluegrass, classical, jazz, chord-melody, etc... Open you mind and quit thinking playing fast = playing good.
-
Impressive, but don't get sidelined from the main thing which is lifting metal and putting it back down again and drinking whey protein.
-
Really nice definitely a better guitarist than me. Don't like the sound of harmonizers though.
-

Technique is a means to an end, if you can't play what you hear in your head, you practice till you can, or you'll be stifling your creativity. Music is meant to make people feel. Speed evokes energy and excitement. I named this song Cruisin' as it's meant to be played while blasting down the highway. Playing slow doesn't exactly equate to speed and doesn't convey the same feeling I attempted to evoke.
Funny how most think this is technical but I play much more technical and a lot faster than this. To me this is simple up-tempo rock which and I wasn't really thinking technique at all. This is just something I wrote in a few min and decided to record as I thought it sounded fun. I generally write more progressive, technical music, much to the chagrin of my bandmates..lol.
Only 10% of this little tune is composed of semi-quick playing yet that's all you hear? *head-shaking smiley*
Been invited to play a benefit show for a local charity after the charity facilitators heard this tune. :)
-

I don't use harmonizers man, I play everything myself. I have to stop from doing that even more often as I love the sound of harmonized guitars..haha.
Thanks for the props though, I play ok.

that's just an excuse people who can't play fast use. "it''s bluesy and emotional"
if you're making it up as you go, it's not "emotional" and if you're making it up as you go and doing it slowly, it's called sucking.

Exactly
I don't consider the tune to feature very fast playing at all (and this is NOT a slam, either. I am just responding to this joker who says he's a guitar player and that he thinks your tune is just noise).
And then when I suggest his comment is embarrassing, he says I need to "open my mind", because fast playing doesn't necessarily equate to good playing ... when I never even suggest such a thing.
The cat is all messed.
-
not my style, but very technically precise. cool runs and its very clear you have great feel.
me, i prefer to play some cheese that has 250 girls on the dance floor. "I gotta feeling" beats out "Cliffs of Dover" everytime haha.

Sometimes, I think when playing gets too fast, some people simply cant comprehend whats going on and pull this excuse.

Well, yeah, if someone has zero idea and hears some player pick off notes at blazing speed, and with crazy precision and attack, it conceivably does sound like a mess of brain-frying audio.

Its the kind of thing people have to mature into, when I was younger, my drummer friend would play songs from bands like Nile, or other similar bands where the drummers were going so fast I had no idea what was going on and thought it sounded like shit.
As I matured, and my playing matured, suddenly not only could I understand what was going on, I actually started to really enjoy and appreciate it.

You speak it, dude. And your Nile example is a great one. I mean, the concept of blast beats goes RIGHT over most folks' heads. They think the guy's doing slow rolls (ha, ha).
Extreme music of any type requires a lot more of the listener, in a variety of ways.

Nice playing Christian. Some good note choices.
Pretty good insight into music from a few posters here too.
Busy writing more instrumental material as well as songs for my band. Saw Maiden with Coheed and Cambria last night. Great show.

Thanks a lot :) Its just impro, but I'm practicing a bit these days, the alternate picking stuff though just seems completely impossible for me to get in sync :/

It takes time and practice.
I used to hate working with a metronome, but it really does help, especially when youre trying to work your way up to some of the really fast alternate picking stuff.
I really have a hard time sweep picking arpeggios for some reason.

I'm the only guy in the band with long hair. Mind you, I consider any hair under 2 feet in length to be short.
Band stuff is nothing like my own material, and my own stuff is all over the map. The band plays classic/standard metal along the lines of Megadeth/Metallica.
Sample scratch track I made for the guys in the band, hence the shitty production.

I'm pretty good at sweeping arpeggios, but even though i practice with a metronome, my alternate picking just seems to have a forced/cramped sound to it. But then again, I dont practice nearly enough!

I love sweeping and string skipping, and your sweeps are great. I wasn't a huge fan of tapping as I was anti-VH for years, growing up in the 80's. I do some tapping, but use it sparingly. I am starting to incorporate tapped arpeggios and chords these days, for some different sounds and to develop new ideas.
Yes, speed and accuracy basically come from hour/days/weeks/months/years of wood shedding. The key to playing fast is watching your breathing to ensure you're not holding your breath, and playing as relaxed as possible, especially when playing long passages. I recently recorded a scratch track of Flight of Bumblebee for my band and it's a great song/exercise for practicing playing long alternate picked passages.

I find it funny how we all go through our "anti-whatever's trendy that we hate at the time" phases, makes me laugh, especially when I look back on the different phases I've gone through.
Its really funny considering that I incorporate many things into my playing now, that I used to boycott years ago

Absolutely man..haha. I used to despise G&R when they first hit the scene mostly due to them playing 'tired' old pentatonic licks. I've since changed my opinion of them..lol
Every phase of playing throughout the years help mold my playing style today, so all those years playing nothing but harmonic minor and diminished/minor arpeggios still comes out in the music when I play everything from metal to blues.

Have you seen my sweeps? :)
I think one of my problems is not settling down on one specific way to hold the pic. My guitar teacher made a "I dont have time to practice today" program, which is basicly one hour of alternate picking to a metronome, I mean, come on one hour is a very very good day ;D

I had this exact conversation with my bass player the other day. I spent years trying to pick with 'proper' form, thinking I was playing incorrectly, and in the end I found out I pick vastly better using my own technique. I try and play a minimum of an hour a day. It does make a huge difference if you can practice on a regular basis.

Yearh, I've always tried to hold it like I was told, but when I use my own technique I seem to play a lot better!
This is my "shred coach" http://www.nielsvejlyt.com/ His 8 finger tapping is kind of like his signature move.

I have this problem - when I'm playing fast I find myself holding my breath and tensing up my picking arm and shoulder. If you watch Yngwie, for instance, playing a fast passage he looks so relaxed and makes it look effortless.

i have tried many times to play the guitar or just synchronizing my left and right hand, there must be somethng im missing
kinda related, i took typing in the 10th grade and can type super fast without looking but on guitar it seems little room for error if your finger is a 16th of an inch off do they make guitars with wider gaps between strings?

I never had much problems with my left hand, for most players the magick starts when you get the right hand in sync with the left. I bet that like 50 hours of practice with a teacher would make you really good :) You seeem like you have that "neerdy approach" to things, thats needed for stuff like this
-
I never practiced as a kid, was just fairly talented, so the stuff I couldn't play I just thougt was out of my skill-league, but at 34 I had some time on my hands and got a good coach and tried practicing with a metronome, and suddenly I reached new ground :) If you invite me, it would be fun to see how far you could go in a week or to ;D I'll bring my own meat
-
Nice man, keep it up!
Thanks man :) I'm recording a shred song at the moment, the sweeps is part of the chorus.
Mathias Eklund has these camps were guitarist stays in a cabin in the woods for a week and just practice and help each other out, would be fun to do that at Falcons place 8)

yeah theres no way ive done 50 hours yet ive probably messed with a guitar for no mor than 3 hours of total time, but its something i love but just on the back burner at the moment, i knew from the start i needed to synch my hands and that was the goal, no where near close just need to practice more , i was gonna do it the right way and learn the notes but i was like fuck that just gonna make up my own notes, if that ever worked out for me that would be something i suppose :)

Three hours ;D Seriously, just messing around with a guitar on your own won't get you anywhere! An hour a month with a good teacher would make sure you practiced the right way :)
