Title: Bump for gmflex (fritz story)
Post by: Karl Kox on January 13, 2009, 02:49:41 PM
I have been meaning to tell this for a while but just have not had the chance.

A few months after Kerry Von Erich killed him self Bob Orton Sr. ( Randy's Grandfather) and his wife came to visit us from Vegas. While he was in town he wanted to go see Fritz. So me my brother  my dad and Bob went out to Fritz's ranch.  This would be the first time my dad and Fritz had spoken since Davids death.  We are there and the visit is going well till Fritz and Bob started arguing about something I was only about 10 or 11 I can't remember what.  Fritz got so mad he told Orton   "wait right here you SOB I'm going to get my gun"   I remind you Kerry had recently killed himself. Orton said in his old raspy voice  "is it the same fucking gun you killed your kid with?"  My dad told me and my brother go get in the car and we left.

Not really.  My dad never worked for Stu Hart.  I have met Bret and Owen they were both very nice.  I just read Bret's book though, it's one of the better wrestling books out there.

I can assure you that is not what caused the territory to go down.   That was caused by the WWF.  None of the other promotions could compete with Vince and his money and his television deal.  Fritz(WCCW) , Vern Gagne(AWA),  even tried pulling their promotions together for big PPV events called Super Clash to compete but could not.  Vince was also taking both organizations talent. From AWA he took The Rockers Hulk Hogan, Mr. Perfect ect. and from WCCW he took guys like The Free Birds. Thats what happend to the promotion they simply could not compete. Plus all the Von Erich boys were dying and the were the big stars of World Class.
As for  throwing the flowers out the window it would not surprise me.  The Trinity River is right there so I'm sure that probably happend .  No Kayfabe.

Another funny story about Fritz the last time we saw him me my old man Terry Funk and a Japanese reporter all went out to Fritz's house for the day.  We ended up at some whata burger and my dad Terry and Fritz were all arguing over who was gonna pay the bill.  Some how Fritz won and paid.   Later I think we some how found out that Fritz owned the Whataburger or some shit.
I have pics from that day I will try to find them.

My man if you only knew.  My dad met him when Murdoch was real young. My dad had just moved to Amarillo and was wrestling for the Funks.  He was driving down the road one day and saw some kid with 2 bear cubs on chains.   My dad had to pull over and talk to him.  That was the start of their friend ship.  They were Best friend up till the day Dickie died.  The only time I have ever seen my old man upset by the way.

Since I was a low end jobber, I didn't really need a gimmick.  The name Venom Vince Versace was only used to signify me as a heel to the audience.  The only thing I had to do was to put someone over and get the crowd worked up.  Usually calling them a bunch of rednecks who lost the war usually gets them riled up

Quite frankly most gimmicks were done by the workers themselves.  McMahon didn't have much part in it

for a avatar like that hell ya I do ;D

Back in like 03 or so  my dad was doing a autograph show in Arlington Link was there.  My dads table was next to Killer Tim Brooks cause they are good friends and like to fuck with each other all the time.  Brooks was leaning over the table signing a pic for someone when Link walked up with this heavy yellow chair he carried with him every where.  My dad said hey Dewy go hit Brooks with that chair.  Well the dumb bastered did it.  He hit Brooks twice right in the back of the neck.  Well Brooks had this big chain on the table it used to be part of his gimmick. He picked it up and went after Link he backed him up against this wall and started choking Link with the chain.  The whole time Link was head butting Brooks .  Once Brooks got Link to his knees he let go of him.  Link picked up his glued on hair piece and left shortly after.   My mom snapped a few bad pics of the whole thing If I ever get my scanner working I will post them.  Every one thought they were working but they were not. Kamala was there too by the way.
Link and I became pretty good friends the next time he was in town and I sent him up ti Metroflex at 65 he was still big as shit.

I have herd people say a lot of good things about him just not from my dad.
He was sitting in the Lobby of a Hotel in Japan playing cards with Tiger Conway Jr. and Rocky Johnson. When my dad and Dick Slater walked by Abby told them "you gotta watch Kox he doesn't like us blacks."  Not true cause my dad is great friends with Rocky and Tiger especially.  I won't repeat what my dad says he told Abby.

My old man and Tiger Conway broke the color barrier in a few sates. Blacks and whits were not allowed to wrestle each other for a while.

There are some good second generation start though.
Larry Henning / Kurt Henning
Bob Orton / Bob Orton Jr./ Randy Orton
Mike Dibiase / Ted Debiase / Ted Debiase Jr.
Dusty Rhodes / Dustin / Cody
Carlos Calon / Carlito and his other brother

I think your right.  Greg valentine is as stiff as a bord.   He was not near as good as his old man.

I have seen that before .  Good stuff. My dad helped train Jimmy garvin they were tag partners for a short time when my dad was baby face .    Also Dick Murdoch was my god father.  He was one of the funniest people of have known.  I really miss him
Murdoch was a big time partier and drinker right?

Yes. very much so.   Sometimes him and my dad would be gone for weeks at a time, when they would get back in to town he would borrow my dads car and not tell his wife he was back. That way he could go partty all night.   That the reason why he had 4 successful marriages LOL.

Sometimes they would be late to the airport cause my old man could not get him out of bed. Dickie would just grab his wrestling bag and wear my dads cloths the who trip cause he did not pack or anything.

I have pics from that day I will try to find them.

here's some pics from that day.  My dad is sorta cut out of the one. I probably took it

Kevin Sullivan: Nancy Benoit's ex-husband.

And, no.

No Kevin S. Did not murder Benoit.

The real story about those three is probably what fueled the rumors. I don't remember all the details, but apparently, while Nancy & Kevin were married, Kevin was booker in WCW, and suggested that Nancy & Chris begin spending time together in public to kayfabe fans into thinking they were an item as part of a storied feud between the two men.

Well, Nancy & Benoit did such a good job on the road that they eventually engaged in a real affair, which lead to Nancy leaving Sullivan for Benoit, and real life heat between Chris and Kevin.

good.  I'm glad to hear it was just a rumor.    it's sad what happened to the brain of Chris, but would have been a horrible injustice if the truth was overlooked.

I trained with Chris in the late 80's.  Stampede wrestling was a breeding ground for wwf, so I met a lot of them; living in Calgary.  so many are dead, pretty damn sad.

Calgary has a very rich history of professional wrestling. Did you ever train with the British Bulldogs?

Yes I did. We had A nice ring in our backyard at one point and I would train back there with my brother. The plan was that maybe I would go down to Mexico when I graduated and wrestle under hood.  (Because I wasn't the muscular beast back then that I am now.) So I might fit in better there. But when I graduated I thought I was in love with this crazy chick and didn't go.

In two thousand and eight I had the opportunity to go to Japan on my dad's name alone. The Indy promotion that my brother was working for was sending guys over. But again I did not go.

One because I was just getting started in my current job and I cannot imagine doing anything else I love it. Two because I thought I was in love again turns out I was right. (We just got hitched in sept BTW)
Three because I did not want to be away from my dad. He was getting old and I didn't want to be away from him.
I am very happy with the way things turned out I love my job
My brother works the Indies regularly mostly as a manager and as a commentator. I enjoy watching him take bumps and throwing his super kick that he practiced on my dad and I my whole childhood.

Haha it's ok I'm a very lucky guy to have gotten to experience what I have with my dad.

I'm also very lucky and happy with my career now. I've gotten to do things in my idustry that people who've been in it for 20 years haven't gotten to do and I'm only 30.

He was sitting in the Lobby of a Hotel in Japan playing cards with Tiger Conway Jr. and Rocky Johnson. When my dad and Dick Slater walked by Abby told them "you gotta watch Kox he doesn't like us blacks."

Well, considering your Dad's initials...

All the boys knew it was just a gimmick. Abby and my dad just didn't like each other. Because of one incident between the two my dad ended being sent home from Australia.

Later my old man would be told by his wife at the time that if he wanted to save their marriage she didn't want him going back to Australia, so he didn't. That was with a gun on him in the car at the airport. Crazy shit. Wrestlers were hard on their family's.   But at one point he was there for 9 months.

Not really. I heard someone talking about it on a podcast not to long ago. Can't remember who though. That was the first time I had heard it I think.

Something along the lines of WWE doing a show in Race's territory in Missouri and Hogan getting lippy causing Race to pull out a 45?

I've heard a couple of different versions of that story. One of them did not involve Harley actually having a gun, but rather he was rumored to show up with one.
