Yes technically a calorie is a calorie... but when it comes to putting on muscle and losing weight, it is a bit more complicated than that.
Think of it this way:
Priority #1 for losing weight: Calorie control
Priority #2 for losing weight: Choosing a certain macro distribution that provides the optimal thermogenic effects.
