I know that Murdoch was your Godfather. Did you guys see him much before he passed?

One of my all time favorites. You could make a case that he was the original "Stone Cold."

We had not been to his ranch in a while. He came down to Dallas several months before he passed. If I about going to Porto Rico. I know he was doing that on and off.

No he just went there. Normally with my dad up till he retired. Murdoch lived in Amarillo TX.

I came across a book online called, "Wrestling at the Chase: The Inside Story of Sam Muchnick & the Legends of Professional Wrestling" which is making quite a read.
Then i came to the chapter, There's Nobody Like Dick Murdoch......
The truth is, Dick Murdoch never realised how good he was. Bobby Heenan once claimed, "based on talent, Murdoch should have been the NWA champion. But he really wanted to be 'Killer' Karl Kox". Like Kox, Dick was just as well known for getting crowds to laugh as he was for inciting their hatred.
Would you agree with Heenans assessment, that seems to be quite a compliment to your father?

The two were very close and that is a great compliment coming from Heenan. My dad had a charisma in and out of the ring that had a weird effect on people. People have always wanted to be around him. Back then he had a pretty intense gimmick and I feel like Murdoch and others were fascinated by it and that my dad had the balls to do it. The KKK initials were never admitted by my dad at being anything more than his name. Murdoch later took it further having a fake Klan ceremony in the ring.
At the end of my dad's career he wrestled for Watts as a face and used his marine corps background as his gimmick. Wearing fatigues to the ring and coming out to the music Here Comes The Judge. Later Murdoch did almost the same thing for Watts. Also saying he was in the marines but wasn't.
So I guess you could say Heenas statement is true but I never thought about it til now. I don't think my dad did either. They were like brothers.

Caught the Austin podcast with Dusty Rhodes. Dusty said that, when at 100%, Murdoch was the best in ring performer, bar none.

IIRC, Murdoch did make his way up north to Vine Sr.'s territory near the end of his career. I was surprised KKK never did the same.

Those were fun days in wrestling. Kayfabe was strongly enforced, and the guys went out of their way to make it seem as real as possible 24/7.
Ox Baker would sit near the stands at smaller armory type shows waxing his mustache. He could just as easily have done that in the backstage area, but chose to put himself into a position that he knew would draw attention to himself. Inevitably, some kids would try to sneak in for a closer look at him, he'd wait until they got within the "shit-yourself-zone," then jump put of his seat and chase them away!
Kayfabe could never exist today, but I still miss it.
